...

Then, on a sharp whistle command from a proxy native officer, the shield wall subtly shifted. The front line dropped to one knee, and the second rank stepped forward, thrusting their heavy, armor-piercing Hengyuan halberds through the gaps. The steel blades punched through the bronze breastplates of the Vanga marines as if they were made of wet parchment. The front ranks of the coalition charge were instantly, brutally gutted.

”Send the chariots! Break their flanks!” Shashanka ordered and then I’ll tell you yeah so happy desperately, seeing the marines being slaughtered against the iron wall.

From the eastern plains, the pride of Pundravardhana, the heavy war chariots, thundered toward the riverbanks. Drawn by massive, armored horses, the chariots carried veteran archers and spearmen, their wheels outfitted with spinning scythe blades. The ground shook as the heavy cavalry unit accelerated, aiming to flank the expanding Samatata beachhead and shatter their lines through sheer momentum.

Deep in the Samatata formation, the native repeating crossbowmen were brought to the front. They knelt behind the shield bearers, raising the heavy, complex mechanical weapons to their shoulders.

Unlike traditional bows, which required strength and time to draw, or standard crossbows that needed to be cranked, the Hengyuan repeating crossbow utilized a heavy top mounted magazine and a rapid action lever.

As the chariots closed the distance, the Samatata officers dropped their flags.

The crossbowmen pulled the levers. A blinding, continuous storm of iron tipped bolts erupted from the lines. It was a localized, mechanical monsoon of death. The bolts, fired with terrifying velocity, punched through the leather barding of the chariot horses and the bronze armor of the drivers.

The leading edge of the chariot charge was instantly decimated. Horses screamed and collapsed, sending their heavy wooden chariots tumbling violently end over end into the mud, crushing their own riders. The chariots behind them could not stop in time, crashing into the wreckage of their vanguard. The proud Pundravardhana chariot corps was reduced to a tangled, bloody heap of splintered wood and dying horses before they even reached striking distance of the enemy.

King Shashanka watched his elite forces being shredded with an expression of sheer, disbelieving horror.

”The elephants,” he rasped, his voice trembling. ”Send the war elephants. They cannot shoot down a moving mountain.”

The coalition’s final, most terrifying trump card was played. Dozens of massive Indian war elephants, their tusks tipped with iron spikes and their thick hides draped in heavy chainmail, trumpeted wildly as they were driven toward the Samatata lines. They were beasts of pure, unstoppable destruction, capable of trampling entire infantry formations into the earth.

The massive beasts charged, the ground quaking violently.

But Huang Zhong had prepared the native commanders for this exact scenario.

As the elephants approached, the Samatata shield wall did not attempt to hold its ground against the multi ton beasts. Instead, executing a flawless, complex maneuver drilled into them over months of agony, the iron squares smoothly parted, creating wide, open lanes within their own formation.

The elephants, driven by instinct and momentum, charged directly into the open lanes, passing harmlessly through the front lines.

Once the beasts were fully engulfed within the Samatata formation, the trap was sprung. The infantry squares quickly closed the lanes behind them, trapping the elephants inside.

”Hamstring them!” a Samatata officer roared.

Thousands of infantrymen converged on the beasts from all sides. They did not aim for the thick armor on the elephants’ flanks. Using the long reach of their Hengyuan halberds, they violently slashed at the unprotected backs of the elephants’ knees, severing the massive tendons. They drove long spears upward, targeting the vulnerable, soft bellies of the beasts.

The mighty elephants shrieked in agony, collapsing under their own immense weight. The mahouts sitting in the howdahs atop the beasts were quickly shot to pieces by precise crossbow fire. In a matter of minutes, the coalition’s greatest terror weapon was dismantled and slaughtered in the mud.

With their catapults destroyed, their marines bleeding out on the shields, their chariots shattered, and their elephants slaughtered, the sheer, crushing reality of the situation finally broke the coalition’s spirit.

They were not fighting an army; they were fighting an industrialized meat-grinder.

The Samatata heavy infantry began their slow, methodical, unstoppable advance up the riverbanks. They marched over the bodies of the Vanga marines, their iron shod boots churning the mud into a bloody slurry. They stabbed methodically downward, ensuring no wounded enemy was left alive behind them.

Panic, absolute and contagious, ripped through the remaining coalition forces. The minor kings and chieftains, who had been arguing so fiercely just days ago, turned their horses and fled. The Pundravardhana pikemen broke ranks, dropping their heavy weapons to run faster. The Vanga archers abandoned their quivers, scrambling desperately to reach the safety of the inland forests.

”Hold! Hold your ground!” King Shashanka screamed, his voice hoarse, swinging his sword at his own fleeing men. But it was useless. A dam had broken, and the flood of routing soldiers was impossible to stop.

Admiral Tarun grabbed Shashanka’s reins, his face bruised and covered in soot. ”It is over, Your Majesty! The line is broken! We must fall back to the capital! If we stay here, we die!”

Shashanka looked down at the riverbank. The three pontoon bridges were still disgorging an endless, dark stream of Samatata soldiers. The Black Dragon banner flew proudly over the ruins of his makeshift fortresses. His coalition, a massive force of ninety five thousand men, had been utterly disassembled in a matter of hours.

With a bitter, anguished cry, the King of Pundravardhana spurred his horse, joining the massive, chaotic retreat of the shattered coalition.

The first major clash of the proxy war was over. Samatata had not just won a victory, they had delivered a psychological and military annihilation. The eastern subcontinent lay entirely open before them, completely defenseless against the relentless, terrifying design of Lie Fan’s hidden empire.

The collapse of the ninety five thousand strong coalition was not a retreat, it was a catastrophic uncontrolled stampede born of primal terror. The proud warriors of the eastern plains and the hardened marines of the coastal deltas had been fundamentally broken, their minds unable to process the industrialized slaughter they had just witnessed. They threw away their bronze shields, dropped their spears into the mud, and ran.

But the Samatata army, forged in the relentless, punishing crucible of Hengyuan discipline, did not simply stand and watch their enemies flee. They did not break ranks to cheer, nor did they scatter to loot the dead.

From the command positions at the rear, a series of sharp, rhythmic whistle blasts pierced the air, followed immediately by the rapid, staccato beating of the war drums. It was the command for a controlled, aggressive pursuit.

The massive iron shield wall seamlessly unspooled into deep, pursuing columns. The heavy infantry broke into a measured, terrifyingly synchronized jogging pace. Their iron shod boots hit the blood-soaked mud in absolute unison, sounding like the grinding gears of a colossal machine.

As the coalition soldiers scrambled desperately up the slippery riverbanks and into the dense tree lines, the Samatata officers barked orders, waving yellow flags. The native repeating crossbowmen, their magazines freshly reloaded with heavy iron tipped bolts, surged to the flanks of the advancing infantry columns.

They did not aim at individual targets. They raised their heavy weapons and unleashed a continuous, mechanical hail of fire directly into the dense, panicked masses of fleeing men.

The slaughter was unprecedented in the history of the subcontinent. Hundreds of Vanga marines and Pundravardhana spearmen were cut down from behind, their bodies tumbling down the muddy embankments in tangled, bleeding heaps.

The kinetic force of the Hengyuan bolts punched through leather backplates and shattered spines, dropping men mid stride. Those who tripped or slipped in the churning mud were instantly trampled to death by their own terrified comrades, their screams swallowed by the deafening roar of the pursuit. ℴ𝗆

The Samatata infantry marched directly over the dead and the dying. Whenever a wounded coalition soldier weakly reached up, begging for mercy, the advancing spearmen simply drove the butts of their halberds downward with cold, emotionless efficiency, crushing skulls and snapping necks without ever breaking their marching stride. The Hengyuan doctrine was absolut, an enemy left alive behind your lines is a dagger aimed at your back.

For miles, the pursuit continued, turning the lush western river valley into an open graveyard. Only when the sun began to dip dangerously low toward the horizon, casting long, bloody shadows across the plains, did the Samatata command horns blow the signal to halt.

Xun You and Huang Zhong knew the dangers of overextending a pursuit into the dark, where desperate, cornered men might successfully ambush an overconfident vanguard. The columns halted instantly, snapping back into defensive squares as effortlessly as they had deployed.

With the immediate threat neutralized and the coalition utterly scattered to the winds, the remainder of the Samatata host, the baggage trains, the heavy trebuchets, and tens of thousands of reserve infantry, finally completed their crossing over the four massive pontoon bridges.

As twilight fell, the western bank of the river was entirely secured. The Samatata forces moved with practiced efficiency to establish a massive, highly fortified encampment. Trenches were dug, wooden stakes were driven into the earth, and heavy patrols were dispatched into the tree line.

It was during this methodical securing of the perimeter that the native scouts made a massive, morale-shifting discovery.

In their desperate haste to flee the mechanized slaughter at the bridgeheads, the coalition armies had completely abandoned their primary supply depots. Hidden behind the earthen berms and hastily constructed timber fortresses were mountains of untouched provisions. There were thousands of heavy hemp sacks bursting with milled grain, vast stores of salted river fish, dried meats, crates of exotic fruits, and hundreds of sealed clay amphorae filled with high quality palm wine intended for the Vanga and Pundravardhana elite officers.

The spoils of war were immediately seized and cataloged by the Samatata quartermasters.

That night, the atmosphere within the sprawling Samatata encampment was electric. Hundreds of cookfires dotted the landscape, burning brightly against the dark canvas of the night. The native soldiers, exhausted from the adrenaline and the physical toll of the slaughter, sat around the fires, feasting on the captured supplies of their enemies.

They ate the salted meats and drank the coalition’s wine, and as the alcohol warmed their blood, a profound psychological transformation took root. Just a year ago, these men were disorganized delta fighters, relying on chaotic skirmishes and hereditary caste hierarchies. Tonight, they sat on the western banks of the great river, wearing impenetrable iron armor, their weapons resting by their sides, having just annihilated the greatest combined military force the east had ever seen.

They looked at their Hengyuan forged weapons and their mechanical crossbows with absolute, fanatical reverence. They realized they were no longer just men; under the hidden guidance of their mainland masters, they had become gods of war. The morale of the army skyrocketed, hardening into an unbreakable, zealous belief in their own invincibility.

While the soldiers celebrated their victory in the mud, a far more chilling, calculated scene was unfolding in the center of the camp.

Inside a massive, opulent silk pavilion that had belonged to King Shashanka just hours prior, the true masters of the battlefield convened. The pavilion was illuminated by dozens of oil lamps, casting stark, dancing shadows against the fabric walls. A massive, highly detailed map of the Vanga and Pundravardhana territories was spread across a captured teakwood table.

Huang Zhong, still wearing his heavy, blood spattered armor, stood with his arms crossed, his white beard bristling with martial energy. Xun You sat gracefully on a wooden stool, waving his crane feather fan to ward off the humid night air, his eyes fixed intensely on the map. Surrounding them were King Samudrasena and the highest ranking native generals of the Samatata army, all of whom looked at the two mainlanders with a mixture of absolute awe and deeply ingrained terror.

”The coalition is broken,” King Samudrasena offered, his voice laced with the intoxicating high of the victory. ”Their kings have fled like whipped curs. We should march directly on their capitals and burn them to the ground.”

Xun You slowly raised his fan, silencing the King instantly.

”They are broken, yes, but they are not yet dead,” Xun You corrected, his voice cold and analytical. ”A wounded snake is often at its most dangerous when it recoils to its den. Vanga and Pundravardhana still possess massive populations, towering stone fortresses, and the desperate rage of cornered men. If we march as a single, slow column, we give them time to rally their local militias, draft their peasants, and fortify their cities.”

Xun You traced two distinct lines on the map with the handle of his fan. One pointing dead north toward the vast plains of Pundravardhana, and the other pointing south toward the coastal estuaries and naval shipyards of Vanga.

”We have over one hundred thousand men,” the strategist continued, his eyes locking onto the native generals. ”We possess the logistical capacity and the tactical superiority to do what they believe is impossible. Tomorrow at dawn, we divide the host.”

A murmur of surprise rippled through the Samatata officers. In traditional Indian warfare, dividing a massive army in enemy territory was considered tactical suicide, opening both halves up to piecemeal destruction.

Huang Zhong stepped forward, his massive presence dominating the tent. He slammed a heavy, scarred finger onto the map.

”You will split the army perfectly in half,” the veteran general growled, his voice carrying the weight of decades of continental warfare. ”Fifty thousand men will march north to shatter Pundravardhana. Fifty thousand will march south to drown Vanga. You will not march blindly, and you will not chase ghosts in the forests.”

Huang Zhong looked directly at the two native commanders who had proven themselves the most ruthless during the bridge assault.

”You will march with extreme, controlled speed,” Huang Zhong instructed. ”Your targets are not the fleeing remnants of their army. Your targets are their primary logistical arteries. You will seize their granaries, capture their major road junctions, and burn their shipyards. If you take their ability to feed and move their men, their kings will be forced to bring whatever pitiful forces they can scrape together and fight you on your terms, in open fields where our steel will grind them to dust.”

Xun You nodded in agreement. ”Do not be reckless. Maintain your supply lines back to the river. Ensure your scouts are always five miles ahead of the vanguard. But do not give them a single moment to breathe. The coalition is drowning in panic. You must be the flood that finishes them.”

The native generals bowed deeply, their initial reservations entirely erased by the flawless logic and terrifying confidence of their masters. The orders were rapidly disseminated through the camp. There would be no long, lingering celebration. At the first light of dawn, the industrial meat grinder would be set loose upon the eastern world.

The sun had barely breached the horizon the next morning when the massive Samatata encampment struck its tents. The sheer efficiency of the mobilization was a terrifying sight. Within an hour, the colossal host had separated into two distinct, monolithic columns of dark iron and crimson banners.

With the deep, rhythmic pounding of the war drums setting the pace, the two armies turned their backs to one another and began their respective invasions.

To the north, the fifty thousand strong column marched toward the fertile, sprawling plains of Pundravardhana. The landscape here was wide and flat, dotted with ancient, stone walled cities and vast agricultural estates.

The news of the massacre at the river had preceded the Samatata advance. The fleeing survivors had spread tales of an unstoppable, mechanical army that felt no pain and wielded magic steel. The rural villages were entirely abandoned, the terrified peasants fleeing deeper into the heartland, clogging the roads and spreading the panic.

However, King Shashanka, despite his humiliating retreat, was a warrior king. He had reached his primary secondary fortress, the walled city of Mahasthan, and refused to run a single step further. He aggressively rallied his fleeing veterans, emptied his local garrisons, and forcefully conscripted every able bodied man from the surrounding territories.

He managed to scrape together a desperate, highly motivated defense force of forty thousand men. They were not fighting for conquest anymore, they were fighting for the very survival of their homeland, their wives, and their children. This desperate, back against the wall mentality transformed the Pundravardhana remnants from a routed mob into highly dangerous, cornered animals.

When the Samatata northern column approached Mahasthan, they found the enemy waiting for them not behind the stone walls, but deployed in a massive, heavily entrenched line across the only viable valley approach. Shashanka had ordered his men to dig deep, spiked trenches and construct heavy wooden barricades, determined to halt the iron tide before it could lay siege to the city.

The battle that erupted on the northern plains was not a swift, clean execution like the river crossing. It was a brutal, grueling, unimaginably fierce slugfest.

The Pundravardhana soldiers, driven by sheer, desperate fury, actually initiated the clash. Thousands of native spearmen, completely abandoning their shields for two handed bronze greatswords, charged the Samatata lines with suicidal bravery. They threw themselves violently against the interlocking iron testudo formations, desperately hacking and stabbing at the narrow gaps between the shields.

For hours, the valley echoed with the horrific sounds of metal tearing into flesh and the screams of the dying. The Samatata heavy infantry held their ground, their boots sinking deep into the blood soaked earth, methodically thrusting their halberds into the surging masses. The repeating crossbowmen fired until the mechanisms of their weapons were burning hot to the touch, dropping thousands of Pundravardhana soldiers in the mud.

Yet, the defenders kept coming. When a section of the Samatata shield wall momentarily buckled under the sheer weight of a desperate human wave, the Pundravardhana soldiers flooded into the gap, turning the disciplined formation into a chaotic, vicious melee of close quarters slaughter. Men gouged eyes, bit throats, and drove daggers through armor joints. The ferocity of the defenders was awe inspiring.
