...

While the high command played the grand, elegant geopolitical game in the brightly lit, incense scented palace above, a dark, gritty, and highly secretive scene was unfolding in the sprawling, muddy underbelly of Karmanta. Here, detailing the terrifying, invisible expansion of the Oriole Agents, the true, shadowy strength of Lie Fan’s empire was taking root.

Operating in the humid, bustling local markets, the chaotic docks, and the dark, rain slicked alleyways of the city, the shadow clad agents were aggressively investigating the neighboring Indian kingdoms. However, they faced a massive operational hurdle.

Despite their intense, sleepless studies and their rapidly improving, albeit heavily accented, language skills, they were Hengyuan Chinese. Their physical features, their bearing, and their mannerisms would eventually stand out far too much if they attempted to infiltrate the deeper Indian subcontinent or the royal courts of Vanga and Pundravardhana.

Realizing this crucial limitation, the master spies of the Oriole network brilliantly executed a massive, highly classified pivot. They began the process of recruiting entirely new, native spies and informants directly from the local origin populations around the region.

But they did not seek out disgruntled nobles, greedy merchants, or corrupt guards, knowing such men were easily bought back by a higher bidder. Instead, they ruthlessly bypassed the upper echelons of society entirely.

On a particularly stormy night, an Oriole Agent commander, his face heavily concealed beneath a coarse, rain soaked burlap cloak, ventured deep into the squalid, forgotten slums on the absolute fringes of Karmanta.

The stench here was unbearable, a mix of rotting garbage, raw sewage, and desperate poverty. The mud was knee deep. This was the domain of those that the rigid Samatata caste system had entirely discarded.

The agent walked into a crumbling, abandoned stone temple that offered meager shelter from the torrential rain. Huddled inside, shivering around a pitiful, dying fire, were dozens of people who absolutely did not have anybody in the world to rely on. There were untouchables who were forbidden from walking the main streets in daylight, discarded, crippled beggars, and most importantly, desperate, starving street kids with hollow eyes and ribs pressing sharply against their skin.

When the imposing, cloaked figure entered, the children shrank back into the shadows, expecting a beating from a city guard.

The Oriole Agent did not draw a weapon. Instead, he reached into his heavy satchel. He pulled out several large, steaming, oil wrapped packages of high quality cooked meat and fresh, warm bread, luxuries these people had not smelled in months. He tossed them gently onto the dry stone near the fire.

The street kids hesitated for a fraction of a second before starvation overtook their fear. They descended on the food, tearing into it with desperate, animalistic hunger.

As they ate, the agent crouched down, bringing himself to their eye level. He reached into his cloak again and pulled out a handful of gleaming, solid silver coins, letting them clink heavily in his palm. The adults in the room stared at the wealth, their eyes wide with disbelief.

”Your kings and your priests treat you like dirt,” the agent spoke in heavily accented, but perfectly understandable Prakrit. His voice was not cruel, it was cold, calculating, and offered a terrifyingly lethal purpose. ”They do not see you. You are invisible to them. You sweep their floors, you empty their waste, you sleep in their alleys, and they walk past you as if you are ghosts.”

He tossed a silver coin to a particularly sharp eyed, feral looking teenage boy who was clutching a piece of bread. The boy caught it, biting it immediately to test its authenticity.

”But to the Black Dragon,” the agent continued, his eyes gleaming in the dim firelight, ”ghosts are the most valuable creatures in the world. We see you. We will feed you. We will clothe you. We will give you Hengyuan steel to protect yourselves. In return, you will become our eyes and our ears.”

The agent looked around the room, making eye contact with the desperate, forgotten souls.

”You will sit by the docks of Vanga and listen to how many ships sail out. You will beg outside the military camps of Pundravardhana and count the number of chariots that roll past. You will clean the floors of the merchant guilds and steal their ledgers. Because you are dirt, they will never suspect you. You will be invisible.”

By showing these slum dwellers genuine kindness, albeit a highly weaponized, manipulative kindness, and offering them vast amounts of silver and physical protection, the agents flawlessly manipulated them. They were giving purpose to the purposeless.

Over the coming weeks, this scene was repeated in slums, brothels, and beggar camps across the delta. The Oriole Agents transformed these invisible, discarded people into the most fiercely loyal, invisible, and widespread network of native spies the region had ever seen.

The street kids became couriers, memorizing troop movements and repeating them flawlessly to their Hengyuan handlers in dark alleys. The untouchables gathered incredible amounts of logistical intelligence by simply listening to the arrogant nobles who thought nothing of discussing state secrets in front of their servants.

Without shedding a single drop of Hengyuan blood, the spies had perfectly set the stage for Lie Fan’s inevitable Indian continent conquest. The shadow of the Black Dragon was no longer just Chinese, it was native, it was everywhere, and it was watching the Indian subcontinent’s every move.

The rapid, unprecedented expansion of the Oriole Agent network deep within the muddy underbelly of Samatata was initially hailed as a flawless operational triumph.

By weaponizing the lowest, most discarded castes of the Indian delta, the untouchables, the starving orphans, and the crippled beggars, the shadow clad spies of the Hengyuan Dynasty had successfully woven an invisible, continent spanning web of intelligence in a matter of weeks. Information regarding troop movements, grain shipments, and whispered court rivalries flowed into the hidden Hengyuan safehouses like water down a monsoon drain.

However, this explosive, exponential rate of expansion carried a hidden, highly dangerous rot.

For years, the core Oriole Agents from the mainland had operated with a terrifying, flawless perfection. They were men and women who had been broken down and rebuilt by the empire, their loyalty was not to coin, but to the absolute, almost religious ideology of the Black Dragon. They were immune to the intoxicating allure of wealth.

But the native recruits of Samatata were not ideological zealots. They were desperately impoverished, starving human beings who had suddenly been handed a terrifying amount of power and mainland silver. The sudden, dizzying influx of wealth and secret authority proved to be a highly corrosive poison to those who lacked the mental fortitude to handle it.

The flaws began to manifest in small, arrogant ways. A teenage street courier, heavily paid in silver to observe the docks of Vanga, decided that he no longer wanted to sleep in the mud. Instead of maintaining his crucial cover as a destitute beggar, he used the Hengyuan silver to purchase high quality silk garments and heavily spiced wines, openly flashing his newly acquired wealth in a crowded coastal tavern.

In another, far more dangerous instance in the capital of Karmanta, a recruited untouchable who cleaned the floors of a wealthy Brahmanical merchant’s estate discovered a highly sensitive ledger detailing the merchant’s corrupt tax evasion.

Rather than quietly passing this vital blackmail material to his Oriole handler, the untouchable became blinded by greed. He attempted to independently extort the powerful merchant for a massive chest of gold. The desperate merchant, rather than paying, immediately hired a dozen ruthless delta thugs to hunt the untouchable down.

The ensuing chaotic chase through the slums forced the local Oriole handler to intervene to protect their intelligence asset. The handler expertly slaughtered the thugs in a dark, rain slicked alleyway using a repeating crossbow, but the brutal, highly efficient nature of the kills left a glaring, undeniable forensic trail.

The local Samatata city guards found the bodies, their armor pierced by bolts made of an impossibly high-quality steel that did not exist anywhere in the delta.

The flawless, invisible veil of the Oriole network had been violently torn. Whispers of lethal, foreign phantoms operating in the slums began to circulate among the surviving Samatata nobles. The local Oriole commanders had severely underestimated the chaotic, unpredictable human element of their new recruits, assuming the silver would buy absolute obedience rather than breeding catastrophic greed.

Thousands of miles away, in the freezing underground intelligence headquarters buried deep beneath the imperial capital of Xiapi, these chaotic shockwaves finally reached the desk of the man who commanded the shadows.

Jia Xu sat alone in his dimly lit office. The only sound was the steady, rhythmic dripping of water from the stone ceiling and the soft rustle of parchment. The air was suffocatingly cold. Spread before him were the heavily encrypted, red sealed reports detailing the rapid expansion in Samatata and the subsequent, sloppy operational breaches.

As Jia Xu decoded the ciphers, his usually calm, venomous eyes darkened into pools of absolute, terrifying fury. The temperature in the room seemed to plummet even further. The pristine, flawless reputation of his intelligence network had been tarnished by the greed of street rats and the careless oversight of his own regional commanders.

”Fools,” Jia Xu hissed, his voice a lethal, razor thin whisper that made the two elite Orioles Agents standing by the door stiffen in sheer terror. ”They hand out the Emperor’s silver as if it were charity, completely forgetting that a starving dog will bite the hand that feeds it if you do not train it with the whip first.”

Jia Xu slammed his fist onto the heavy oak desk, the sudden, violent sound echoing like a gunshot in the silent room. He grabbed a fresh bamboo scroll and a brush, his hand moving with vicious, aggressive strokes as he drafted an absolute, uncompromising directive.

He summoned his most trusted, lethal lieutenant, a man known only as ’The Viper.’

”Take a fast clipper ship. Sail for Funan, and ride directly to Karmanta,” Jia Xu ordered, handing the sealed black scroll to the lieutenant. His eyes burned with a ruthless, unforgiving coldness. ”The Samatata branch commander has grown arrogant with his rapid success. He has traded perfection for speed. Deliver my reprimand to him. Tell him that if one more piece of Hengyuan steel is found by the local guards, I will have his entire family executed.”

The Viper bowed deeply, taking the scroll. ”And the native recruits, my lord?”

”A full investigation is to be initiated the moment you arrive,” Jia Xu commanded, leaning back into the shadows of his chair. ”Interrogate every single native handler. Audit the silver. Any local recruit who has used our coin to enrich themselves, who has broken their cover, or who harbors even a single, fleeting thought of independent ambition, is to be eliminated. I do not care if it is a beggar, a child, or a merchant. Silence them. Slit their throats and throw their bodies into the delta for the crocodiles. We will violently prune this overgrown, diseased branch until only the absolute, fanatically loyal roots remain. Do not return until the shadows are clean.”

Within weeks, a silent, terrifying purge swept through the slums of Karmanta. The rogue agents and greedy informants simply vanished in the middle of the night, their bodies never found, their sudden wealth reclaimed by the true masters of the dark. The Oriole network violently corrected itself, replacing the intoxicating lure of silver with the absolute, paralyzing fear of the Black Dragon’s wrath.

Meanwhile, in stark contrast to the bloody, invisible wars being waged in the southern mud, a scene of unprecedented, sunlit grandeur was unfolding back in the heart of the empire.

To the east, the colossal fleet of the Hengyuan Dynasty had finally crossed the treacherous ocean strait. The heavy, smoke belching steam warships and massive galleons dropped their iron anchors in the heavily fortified military ports of the mainland. ℯⅇ𝙡.

Sima Yi, Guo Jia, Xi Zhicai, and the brilliant pacifier Jia Kui had finally returned to Xiapi. They did not return alone, they were escorted by tens of thousands of elite, battle hardened soldiers of the Imperial Army, their dark armor polished to a mirror shine, their crimson banners snapping proudly in the crisp mainland wind. And heavily guarded in the absolute center of this triumphant procession was their greatest prize: Lady Himiko, the fallen Shaman Queen of Yamatai.

The grand imperial hall of the Xiapi palace was a breathtaking spectacle of power and wealth. Massive pillars of carved jade and red lacquered wood held up the towering ceiling. The floor was lined with the empire’s highest ranking officials, generals, and scholars, all murmuring in awed anticipation.

At the far end of the sprawling hall, sitting upon the elevated, magnificent Dragon Throne, was Lie Fan. Clad in heavy, intricate robes of black and gold silk, his presence dominated the massive room.

The heavy, gilded doors swung open. The imperial herald struck his heavy staff against the marble floor, announcing the arrival of the eastern conquerors.

Sima Yi, Guo Jia, Xi Zhicai, and Jia Kui strode down the long, central aisle. They moved with the unshakeable, profound confidence of men who had just violently reshaped the geography of the known world. They stopped at the base of the dais, the four peerless strategists falling to their knees and pressing their foreheads to the marble in absolute, synchronized reverence.

”Rise, my brilliant architects of victory,” Lie Fan commanded, his voice echoing with deep, genuine warmth and booming authority.

The four men stood, dusting off their robes. Lie Fan looked down at them, a fierce, deeply proud smile gracing his features.

”You have given this empire the rising sun,” Lie Fan declared, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent hall, ensuring every minister heard the absolute praise. ”Through your flawless tactical brilliance, your logistical mastery, and your unyielding dedication, the entire Wa archipelago has been permanently chained to the Dragon Throne. You have shattered ancient kingdoms, burned the freezing north, and pacified the southern jungles. This monumental victory has permanently, irreversibly cemented the absolute power of the Hengyuan Dynasty.”

Lie Fan raised his hand, gesturing to the empty spaces beside the throne. ”When Supreme Commander Zhang Liao, the grand admirals, and the rest of our glorious army finally return from their consolidation duties, the heavens themselves will weep with the sheer scale of the rewards and commendations that will be bestowed upon you all. Your names will be carved into the very bedrock of history.”

Sima Yi stepped forward, bowing deeply once more, his dark eyes shining with calculated pride. ”We thank you for your incredibly kind words, Your Majesty. But we are merely the brush; you are the hand that guides it. The victory belongs entirely to your divine vision.”

Sima Yi then turned toward the massive doors. He offered a sharp, subtle nod to the heavily armored elite guards standing by the entrance.

”However, Your Majesty,” Sima Yi continued, his voice dropping into a tone of intense, intellectual intrigue. ”We did not merely bring back gold, sulfur, and conquered land. We brought back a mind. A mind that has ruled the archipelago through fear, alchemy, and manipulation for decades. We present to you the former ruler of Yamatai.”

The guards parted, and Lady Himiko was escorted down the long aisle.

She was no longer bound by coarse ropes, nor was she wearing the terrifying, mystical bone ornaments of her shamanic past. She was dressed in fine, muted mainland silks that flowed elegantly as she walked. Yet, despite her defeat, she did not walk with a broken spine. She carried herself with the innate, undeniable pride of a woman who had once been a living god.

As Himiko walked down the massive hall, her eyes darted rapidly, taking in the sheer, unfathomable scale of the Hengyuan capital. She had ruled a kingdom of wooden palaces and thatched roofs, she was now standing inside a fortress of polished marble, forged iron, and architectural perfection that defied her comprehension.

When she finally reached the base of the dais, she looked up.

Himiko was completely, profoundly surprised. In her mind, an Emperor who commanded such terrifying, world ending armies, who possessed ships that moved without wind and weapons that spat fire, had to be a wizened, ancient tyrant with a long white beard, much like the elder shamans she had known.

Instead, she saw Lie Fan. He was a vigorous, terrifyingly sharp, and incredibly handsome man, far younger than she had ever expected. His eyes burned with a relentless, piercing intelligence that seemed to instantly strip away all her mystical defenses and read the very core of her soul.

With the help of a highly educated imperial translator standing nearby, a long, fascinating conversation began between the conqueror and the conquered.

”You look upon this hall with awe, Lady Himiko,” Lie Fan said, his voice calm, yet carrying a heavy, analyzing weight.

The translator quickly converted the words. Himiko swallowed her pride and offered a stiff, formal bow.

”I look upon a nation that has harnessed the very elements,” Himiko replied in her native tongue, her voice steady but laced with genuine curiosity. ”Your ships breathe smoke. Your soldiers carry thunder. I am in awe, yes, but I am also trying to understand how a man at such age commands such terrifying, unnatural power.”

Lie Fan chuckled, a deep, rich sound that echoed in the hall. He was actively, meticulously gauging her. He looked entirely past her undeniable, exotic beauty, completely ignoring the aesthetic appeal that would have distracted a lesser king. Lie Fan was solely, aggressively interested in the intricate workings of her mind.

”There is nothing unnatural about our power, Himiko,” Lie Fan stated, leaning forward on his throne. ”It is the triumph of industry, science, and relentless discipline over superstition. I have read the reports provided by my strategists. They tell me you maintained your absolute rule not just through religious fear, but through a deep, complex understanding of metallurgy, rudimentary chemistry, and the manipulation of natural toxins.”

Himiko’s eyes narrowed slightly. She realized instantly that the man before her was not just a warlord, he was a scholar of warfare. She was gauging him just as heavily as he was gauging her. ”The earth provides many secrets to those who know how to listen,” Himiko answered carefully, refusing to give away her knowledge too easily. ”I understand the breathing of the volcanoes. I know how to extract the yellow powder that burns the lungs, and how to forge bronze that does not shatter in the cold.”
