...

”He speaks the truth,” King Shashanka added, his voice cold, pragmatic, and utterly devoid of empathy. ”The enemy numbers over a hundred thousand men. They wield weapons of dark magic and march in formations that do not break. If we march our combined forces out of our fortified citadels to meet them in the open field, we will be slaughtered just as we were at the river crossing. We must conserve our strength. We must hold the primary capitals and force them into a prolonged siege where their momentum will finally stall.”

”Conserve your strength?!” an elderly tribal chieftain shrieked, spit flying from his lips as he pointed a trembling, accusatory finger at Shashanka. ”You are conserving your strength by feeding our people to the wolves! You are using our kingdoms as a shield of meat to buy yourselves time! My tribe has been erased from the earth, and you sit here behind your high walls and speak of conservation!”

The chamber erupted into absolute, deafening chaos. The fragile bonds of the coalition, held together only by the mutual threat of Samatata, finally violently snapped. The minor kings and tribal elders, driven mad by grief, loss, and the horrifying realization that they had been used as expendable pawns, began screaming curses at Devadatta and Shashanka.

”You are cowards! False kings who hide while the east burns!” King Rudra screamed, spit flying from his mouth, his face purple with rage. ”You demand our loyalty, but you offer nothing but our own graves in return!”

Lord Vashistha, standing behind King Shashanka, stepped forward, his hand resting menacingly on the hilt of his curved sword. His eyes swept over the furious, displaced monarchs with an expression of absolute, terrifying contempt.

”Watch your tone, Rudra,” Vashistha hissed, his voice slicing through the shouting match like a razor. ”You forget who you are speaking to.”

”I am speaking to the men who betrayed us!” Rudra roared back, refusing to back down, the sheer desperation of a man who had lost everything overriding his fear. ”We demand that you mobilize the remaining armies! We demand that you march out and reclaim our lands, or by the gods, we will pull our surviving auxiliaries from your ranks and strike terms with Samudrasena ourselves!”

The threat of defection was the spark that ignited the powder keg.

Admiral Tarun drew his sword, the metallic shing ringing clearly in the chamber. In an instant, the heavily armored royal guards of Vanga and Pundravardhana stepped out from the shadows, their spears leveled at the furious, displaced kings.

The minor monarchs, realizing they were surrounded in a foreign citadel, instinctively reached for their own daggers and sidearms. The grand council chamber had devolved into a Mexican standoff, the air thick with the promise of internal slaughter.

King Shashanka slowly stood up from his heavy wooden chair. He did not look angry, he looked entirely numb. He stared at King Rudra, and the cruel, inescapable logic of power dynamics settled over the room.

”You demand that we march,” Shashanka said, his voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper that somehow carried over the heavy breathing of the armed men. ”You threaten to withdraw your troops. You threaten to negotiate with the enemy.”

Shashanka leaned over the table, his eyes locking onto Rudra’s.

”Look at this map, Rudra,” the King of Pundravardhana commanded coldly. ”Look at the black markers. Your capital is gone. Your granaries belong to the enemy. Your people are either dead, enslaved, or begging for scraps in my city streets.”

Shashanka stood up straight, his face a mask of absolute, unforgiving pragmatism.

”You have no domain,” Shashanka stated brutally, delivering the final, crushing blow. ”You have no wealth, no standing army, and no strategic value left to offer this coalition. You are a king of ashes. And in this chamber, kings of ashes have absolutely no voice.”

King Rudra’s face drained of all color. The sheer, naked cruelty of the statement hit him with the force of a physical blow. The other displaced leaders fell into a stunned, horrified silence, realizing that they had been entirely stripped of their political relevance the moment their walls fell. They were no longer allies; they were refugees with titles.

”If any man in this room attempts to pull their forces from the defensive lines, or whispers a single word of surrender to the Delta Tyrant,” King Devadatta added, stepping up beside Shashanka, perfectly unified in their ruthless desperation, ”they will not leave this citadel alive. We will execute you as traitors to the east, and we will assume direct command of whatever pitiful remnants of your forces remain.”

The standoff reached a terrifying, suffocating peak. The minor kings stood with their daggers drawn, their hands trembling with a mixture of profound hatred and paralyzing fear, staring down the leveled spears of the major powers. The coalition was a breath away from eating itself alive, ready to paint the walls of the council chamber with the blood of its own allies, while the mechanized shadow of the Samatata army drew ever closer to their gates.

The heavy, suffocating silence in the grand council chamber stretched until it felt as though the very stone walls of the Gaur citadel were closing in on them. King Rudra stood with his dagger drawn, his knuckles bone white, the blade trembling slightly in the torchlight. Across the ruined map of the eastern subcontinent, the leveled spears of the Vanga marines and Pundravardhana royal guards formed a glittering, impassable wall of bronze and steel.

Rudra looked at the cold, unyielding faces of King Devadatta and King Shashanka. He looked at the sneering contempt of Lord Vashistha. And in that agonizing, breathless moment, the final, fractured remnants of Rudra’s sanity simply dissolved.

He was a king who had lost his kingdom. His family was dead or in chains. His wealth had been plundered to feed the Samatata war machine, and now, the men who had sworn an oath to protect him were calling him a king of ashes and threatening him with execution. There was no grand future left for him. There was only this room, this moment, and the desperate, burning need for vengeance.

”If I am a king of ashes,” Rudra whispered, a terrifying, manic smile splitting his tear streaked face, ”then I will see you both burn with me!”

With a primal, guttural scream that tore his vocal cords, King Rudra threw himself over the massive teakwood table.

He didn’t aim for the guards. He vaulted directly over the spilled wine and the wooden markers, lunging with desperate, suicidal speed toward King Shashanka, his dagger aimed perfectly at the monarch’s throat.

All hell broke loose in a fraction of a second.

”Treason!” Lord Vashistha roared, stepping into Rudra’s path. The brilliant strategist of Pundravardhana managed to draw his curved sword just in time to deflect the dagger, but Rudra’s sheer momentum crashed into him, sending both men tumbling backward in a tangle of limbs and fine silk.

The movement was the spark that ignited the entire room. The other displaced kings and tribal elders, men who had been pushed past the absolute limits of human endurance and stripped of their last shreds of dignity, completely gave in to their blinding rage. They let out unified roars of grief and hatred, charging the armed guards with their daggers, hidden belt knives, and bare hands.

The council chamber, meant for diplomacy and grand strategy, instantly devolved into a claustrophobic, blood soaked slaughterhouse.

Admiral Tarun stepped in front of King Devadatta, his heavy naval sword whistling through the air as he cleaved through the shoulder of an elderly, screaming chieftain from the Suhma valleys. Blood sprayed across the ancient tapestries hanging on the walls.

But the displaced monarchs were fighting with the rabid, unfeeling ferocity of men who had already accepted their deaths. An exiled river baron dove beneath the thrust of a Vanga marine’s spear, driving a hunting knife repeatedly into the guard’s exposed thigh until the marine collapsed, screaming in agony.

”Kill them! Kill them all!” King Devadatta bellowed, drawing his own jewel encrusted blade, stepping back as the chaotic melee surged toward him.

The loyalist kings and chieftains, those minor leaders who still possessed their lands and had remained steadfast behind the two major powers, were suddenly dragged into the nightmare. They drew their own weapons to defend Devadatta and Shashanka, but in the chaotic, dimly lit frenzy of the brawl, identifying friend from foe became nearly impossible.

Chief Bhadra, a loyalist leader from the western hills known for his steadfast support of Pundravardhana, rushed forward to assist Lord Vashistha, who was still locked in a desperate ground struggle with the manic King Rudra.

Before Bhadra could reach them, an exiled, grief maddened tribal elder from the east tackled him from the side. The elder, having lost his spear, used a heavy, brass wine flagon snatched from the table, bludgeoning Chief Bhadra across the temple with sickening, wet thuds until the loyalist chief’s skull caved in.

”Bhadra is down!” a Pundravardhana general shouted in horror, thrusting his pike through the chest of the elder, pinning the old man to the stone floor.

The chamber was a nightmare of colliding bodies, slipping on the mixture of spilled vintage wine and fresh, hot blood. Lord Vashistha finally managed to drive a knee into King Rudra’s stomach, creating enough space to bring the pommel of his sword crashing down on Rudra’s jaw.

The disgraced king slumped, dazed, but before Vashistha could secure him, two more displaced nobles threw themselves at the strategist, their daggers finding the gaps in his leather armor, drawing deep, bloody gashes across his ribs.

King Shashanka, his bronze armor deflecting a frantic knife thrust, grabbed a heavy, wooden chair and brought it smashing down across the back of his attacker. ”Formation! Lock them against the walls!” the King of Pundravardhana roared to his elite guards, his voice rising above the din of clashing steel and screaming men.

The heavy infantry of the royal guards finally overcame the initial shock of the localized rebellion. They closed ranks, forming a tight semicircle of overlapping shields around Devadatta and Shashanka. Slowly, methodically, and with brutal efficiency, they began to push outward.

The displaced kings, armed only with ceremonial daggers and blinded by their grief, stood absolutely no chance against the organized, heavily armored wall of the royal guard. The fight transformed from a chaotic brawl into a systematic, horrifying extermination.

Spears thrust forward in the dim light, pinning shrieking tribal elders against the stone columns. Heavy naval cutlasses rose and fell, severing limbs and silencing the defiant roars of the fallen monarchs.

King Rudra, bleeding heavily from the mouth and barely conscious, dragged himself up against the base of the central table. He looked around the room, witnessing the absolute eradication of his peers. He saw the bodies of his fellow exiles being hacked to pieces by the guards.

King Shashanka stepped through the shield wall, his chest heaving, his bronze armor splattered with the blood of his former allies. He looked down at Rudra with eyes completely devoid of warmth.

”You promised us... a shield,” Rudra gurgled, blood bubbling past his lips as he glared up at the monarch. ”You gave us... a slaughterhouse.”

”You brought the slaughterhouse upon yourself,” Shashanka replied coldly. Without a flicker of hesitation, the King of Pundravardhana raised his bronze sword and drove it cleanly through Rudra’s chest, pinning the last exiled king to the floor.

Rudra’s eyes went wide, his hands weakly grasping the blade, before the life finally fled from his body. He collapsed against the stone, joining the tangled heap of the dead.

The grand council chamber fell into a heavy, agonizing silence, broken only by the ragged breathing of the survivors and the soft, horrific dripping of blood from the edge of the great teakwood table. The sprawling map of the eastern subcontinent was ruined, completely soaked in the blood of the men who had once ruled it.

King Devadatta lowered his sword, his hands shaking slightly from the adrenaline. He looked around the room. The rebellion of the displaced kings had been utterly crushed. Every single monarch, elder, and chieftain who had launched the attack lay dead on the floor.

But the victory was a pyrrhic, humiliating disaster.

The loyalists had not escaped unscathed. Scattered among the dead exiles were the bodies of King Devadatta’s and King Shashanka’s own supporters. Chief Bhadra lay in a pool of his own blood, his head ruined.

Two other loyalist kings, men whose armies were currently holding the vital western trenches, had been fatally stabbed in the chaotic crossfire. Several high ranking Pundravardhana generals and Vanga marines were dead or severely wounded, groaning on the floor.

”By the gods,” Admiral Tarun whispered, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek as he surveyed the carnage. ”We have butchered our own council.”

”They were traitors,” Lord Vashistha hissed, clutching his bleeding ribs, his face pale but his eyes burning with absolute conviction. ”They allowed their grief to override their duty. They would have sold us to Samatata by nightfall.”

”Clean this up,” King Shashanka ordered, his voice echoing hollowly in the ruined chamber. He turned away from the bodies, unable to look at the cost of his own absolute authority. ”Wrap the bodies of our loyalists in silk. Give them the highest honors of the state. Burn the traitors in the courtyard. Let the ash blow out over the walls.”

The heavy oak doors were opened, and dozens of terrified servants and auxiliary guards were rushed into the room. They moved in silence, horrified by the butchery that had taken place at the highest echelon of their leadership. Buckets of water were brought in to scrub the stone, but the metallic smell of blood had already seeped deep into the tapestries.

While the physical cleanup began, a far more dangerous, logistical cleanup had to be executed immediately.

King Devadatta pulled Admiral Tarun aside, his voice dropping to a harsh, urgent whisper. ”The armies of these dead traitors are currently encamped in the lower valleys. There are nearly fifteen thousand men down there who still wear the colors of Rudra and the other exiles. When they hear we have slaughtered their kings in the council chamber, they will mutiny. They will tear the lower camps apart.”

”They will not have the chance,” Admiral Tarun replied, his eyes hardening.

Within the hour, massive, armed contingents of Vanga marines and elite Pundravardhana pikemen were dispatched from the citadel under the cover of darkness. They marched in absolute silence, surrounding the sprawling, disorganized refugee encampments of the displaced armies.

The remaining generals and captains of the dead kings were summoned from their tents under the guise of an emergency war council. The moment they stepped into the command pavilions, they were surrounded by Tarun’s marines.

”Your kings launched a treacherous, cowardly attack against the high command,” Admiral Tarun announced coldly to the bewildered, terrified native officers. ”They have been executed for treason against the eastern coalition.”

Before the native officers could even process the shock of the statement, Tarun delivered the ultimatum.

”As of this moment, your independent banners are burned. Your regional loyalties are erased,” the Admiral commanded, pointing toward the massive, heavily armed detachments surrounding the camp. ”Your men will be broken down and assimilated directly into the vanguard units of Vanga and Pundravardhana. You will march under our colors, and you will obey our commanders. Any man who refuses, any man who draws a blade in protest, will be executed on the spot, and his family will be cast out of the citadel to starve.”

A few fiercely loyal captains of King Rudra attempted to resist, drawing their swords and screaming for their men to wake up and fight the betrayal. They were instantly, brutally cut down by the Vanga marines. Their bodies were hung from the watchtowers of the camp as a stark, undeniable warning.

Faced with the overwhelming, heavily armored might of the major powers, and utterly demoralized by the death of their kings, the displaced armies broke. They surrendered their banners. They allowed themselves to be divided, stripped of their command structures, and forcefully assimilated into the massive, unwieldy coalition war machine. The integration was achieved not through unity, but through a terrifying application of fear and spilled blood.

However, the internal bleeding of the coalition was far from over.

The following morning, as the smoke from the traitors’ pyres drifted lazily over the battlements of Gaur, the heirs of the loyalist leaders who had died in the crossfire were summoned to the grand council chamber.

The room had been scrubbed, and new tapestries had been hastily hung, but the faint, copper scent of blood still lingered heavily in the air. The heavy teakwood table bore deep, undeniable gouges from the frantic sword strikes of the night before.

Prince Kiran, the eldest son of the loyalist Chief Bhadra, stood at the front of the group of grieving heirs. He was a young, fiercely proud warrior of the western hills, his eyes red rimmed from weeping, but his jaw was set in stone. He looked at King Shashanka and King Devadatta, who sat rigidly at the head of the table.

”My father was a loyal man,” Prince Kiran said, his voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of grief and mounting fury. ”He pledged the ten thousand spears of the western hills to Pundravardhana. He stood by your side when the coastal lords debated surrendering to the Kushans. And you return him to me wrapped in a blood soaked shroud, his skull crushed in a secure council meeting!”

”It was a tragedy of the highest order, Prince Kiran,” King Shashanka said smoothly, though his eyes remained watchful. ”King Rudra and the exiles lost their minds. They launched a cowardly, unprovoked ambush against the high command. Your father, acting with the absolute, honorable bravery that defined his life, threw himself into the fray to protect this coalition. He died a hero’s death, slain by the treacherous cowards we harbored.”

Prince Kiran did not look convinced. He looked at the gouges on the table, and then at the heavily bandaged ribs of Lord Vashistha.

”My father survived a dozen wars on the open plains,” Kiran hissed, his hand dropping to rest on the pommel of his own sword. ”And he is beaten to death in a room filled with your elite guards? Rumors are already spreading through the lower camps. They say it was not an ambush. They say you purged the council. They say you are slaughtering anyone who questions your authority!”
