”Director Wang, what on earth is going on? Why did it suddenly… does that woman have a powerful background?” On the other side, as they left in the police car, one of Deputy Director Wang Dazhi’s men could no longer hold back and finally asked with a frown. He was Wang Dazhi’s trusted subordinate and highly regarded, which was the only reason he dared to ask at a time like this.

”What do you think?” Deputy Director Wang Dazhi was clearly in a foul mood. Even this question from his most trusted subordinate irritated him to no end. His expression was incredibly grim, his face livid!

If he weren’t so completely out of the mood and patience to deal with his subordinates, he would have loved to kick this man to the ground and call him an idiot. Did he really have to ask? If not for a special reason—that the woman had an immense background—what good were his status and position? Why else would he have groveled and flattered her like that?

Still, Wang Dazhi remembered that this man was his confidant, and since he didn’t even have the energy to get angry, he suppressed his rage and said irritably, ”Do you have any idea who that woman just called? With a single phone call, she summoned Director Zhu from the city. It seems her son has some pull and very strong connections there.”

”What? Director Zhu from the city?” Hearing this, the policemen from the Xicheng Police Station were all stunned. They never expected Lin Ling to have such a powerful backer that she could even contact Director Zhu.

Director Zhu was the biggest boss in the entire Northern Mountain public security system, the absolute top man! Yet now, that ordinary-looking woman had managed to summon such an important figure with just one call. How could they not be astonished?

”Director Wang, what do we do now?” After a long pause, a junior police officer from the Xicheng Police Station asked cautiously, his face filled with worry.

Wang Dazhi had connections. Not only was he a deputy director, but he was also the cousin of the big boss of the Chengyang County Public Security Bureau, Wang Ye. With that relationship, even if Director Zhu from the city was displeased with their actions today, he would likely show Bureau Wang some respect and wouldn’t take serious action against Wang Dazhi. But it was different for them. In the eyes of ordinary people, they were imposing figures who could swagger around their jurisdiction. In the eyes of a big boss like Director Zhu, however, they were nothing more than the lowest-level grunts. If he took a dislike to them over today’s incident and wanted to vent his anger, it would be effortless. He wouldn’t even need a pretext; a single word from him would be enough. The gap between their ranks was simply too vast.

In fact, without his cousin, Bureau Wang, Director Zhu could have dealt with Wang Dazhi without a second thought. One was the deputy director of a police station in a small county; the other was the head of the city’s Public Security Bureau. The disparity in their rank and status was immense and glaringly obvious.

Thinking about this, even Wang Dazhi’s most trusted subordinate couldn’t help but worry. ”D-Director Wang,” he stuttered, ”what do we do now? We can’t afford to provoke Director Zhu. If he gets angry, we’ll be in for it, won’t we?”

”...You’re asking me? Who the hell am I supposed to ask? Shut up! I’m freaking out here too,” Wang Dazhi finally roared, his expression twisting. Dammit, what to do? You’re asking me, but who am I supposed to ask?

After stewing in grim-faced silence for a long time, Wang Dazhi finally spoke, his voice tinged with panic. ”Of course, I know I can’t provoke Director Zhu. But this matter… it was just a small misunderstanding! That woman’s son is shamelessly pushing his luck, blowing it up as if it were a capital crime and refusing to let it go! He’s bullying us too damn much!”

Hearing this, the other police officers exchanged strange glances. After all, if that woman’s son really did have the pull to summon Director Zhu from the city, to contact the head of the city’s Public Security Bureau, then their previous actions had indeed been excessive.

Of course, they only dared to think this and wouldn’t say it aloud, fearing they would only add fuel to the fire and make things worse for themselves.

Their expressions were too obvious, though, causing Deputy Director Wang Dazhi’s eye to twitch. He cursed silently. Dammit! If I had known that woman’s son was so powerful, would I have been stupid enough to wade into this mess? I would’ve stayed far, far away! But I had no idea before!

”Director Wang, why don’t you call Bureau Wang?” someone cautiously suggested. ”After all, this matter could be blown up or brushed aside. If they really refuse to let it go, it’ll be troublesome. And regarding Director Zhu… If Bureau Wang is willing to step in, Director Zhu would definitely give him face, right?”

The panicked atmosphere in the police car subsided at this suggestion. The mention of Bureau Wang steadied their nerves considerably. The eyes of Wang Dazhi’s trusted subordinate, in particular, lit up.

”If Bureau Wang could step in to help, that would be for the best,” he couldn’t help but add.

They were all well aware of the situation. It was similar to his own relationship with Wang Dazhi. Chengyang County’s Public Security Bureau Director, Wang Ye, was a key figure from Director Zhu’s Direct Lineage, personally promoted by the man himself. Their relationship was extraordinary. If someone like that was willing to help, any problem would instantly cease to be a problem and could be resolved in minutes.

Since Deputy Director Wang Dazhi was Bureau Wang’s cousin, there would surely be no problem if he asked for such a small favor. ”Alright, I’ll call my cousin,” Wang Dazhi said, finally seeing the light. He took out his phone and dialed Wang Ye.

He had been reluctant to make this call because he felt it was too embarrassing, a total loss of face. But now that he was thinking more clearly, he understood it was necessary. Otherwise, things would get very troublesome if the matter was pursued.

”Hello, cousin? It’s me, Wang Dazhi,” he began in a wronged tone as soon as the call connected. ”I have something I need your help with. It’s like this...”

”What did you say!? You disturbed Director Zhu!?” On the other end of the line, Chengyang County Public Security Bureau Director Wang Ye was both anxious and furious. Hearing that his incompetent cousin had actually bothered his own superior, the city’s Public Security Bureau Director Zhu Qianye, he laid into Wang Dazhi before frowning and demanding to know what happened.

Wang Dazhi quickly recounted the incident from start to finish. However, he deliberately omitted Director Zhu’s mention of Mayor Huang and his frightening words. That’s impossible. How could that woman’s son be so powerful? He must have been bluffing to scare me. After all, if her son were really that capable, his family would have moved to a big city to enjoy a better life long ago. Why would they still be in this small county? It’s just not possible.

”Cousin, you were definitely in the wrong,” Wang Ye said with a frown after hearing the story. He was clearly much sharper than Wang Dazhi. ”Even if the other party was a leader from the Public Security Bureau of Capital City, you can’t show such blatant favoritism. And think about it: if he really is a leader from Capital City who came all the way to Northern Mountain looking for her, could that woman’s background possibly be simple?”

”Ah, Little Ye, I know, but at the time... You really have to help me with this. If they refuse to let it go, I’ll be in real trouble. As for Director Zhu...” Wang Dazhi admitted his mistake, his tone turning pitiful. He was genuinely terrified that Director Zhu would make a move; if that happened, it would be too late for regrets.

”Alright. Strictly speaking, this incident isn’t that serious, and it does seem to be mostly a misunderstanding. I’ll call Director Zhu and explain. It should be fine,” Wang Ye finally said, giving in to his cousin’s pleading for the sake of their family ties.

”Really? That’s great! Little Ye, it’s been too long since we got together. Why don’t you bring your wife over for dinner at my place this weekend? Your sister-in-law and my mom are always talking about you two,” Wang Dazhi said excitedly.

”...Alright, we’ll talk this weekend. I have to hang up now, cousin,” Wang Ye replied with a smile before ending the call. He then immediately dialed Director Zhu Qianye’s number.

Meanwhile, Director Zhu Qianye was already in a car with Mayor Huang Tao and the current Secretary of the Disciplinary Inspection Commission, Zhong Bingyue, speeding toward Chengyang County. Behind them followed a convoy of police cars with wailing sirens!

”Mayor Huang, Director Zhu, what’s going on? Is it another major case?” Secretary Zhong Bingyue, who had been pulled along without any explanation, was completely in the dark and was only now finding a moment to ask.

”It’s a huge deal,” Huang Tao said, shaking his head with a sigh. ”If we don’t handle this properly, the three of us might be applying for early retirement in a few days. We’ll be finished.” He knew exactly how serious this was. It involved the mother of Chen Fei, Mr. Chen. That was sacred ground for him! If this wasn’t handled perfectly, all of their careers would be over.

”What… What are you saying?” Hearing Huang Tao describe the situation so gravely, Secretary Zhong Bingyue nearly choked, his face instantly turning frantic.

He never imagined the matter was so severe! If it wasn’t handled properly, all three of them would have to retire early and step down? This… just what level of big shot could possibly be involved in today’s incident!? After all, one of them was the Mayor of an Earth Level city, another was the Director of the city’s Public Security Bureau and a member of the Municipal Party Standing Committee, and the third was the Secretary of the Disciplinary Inspection Commission, also a member of the Municipal Party Committee... What on earth could be happening that was this serious?
