High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1066: Chapter 128 Painted Skin

”Do you all know this black cat?”

Nicholas finally set his eyes on a seemingly innocent black cat, his tone filled with curiosity.

”Seen it!”

”Know it!”

This time, Xiao Xiao and Li Meng spoke in unison again. The black cat couldn’t help but press its paw against its forehead.

Li Meng glanced at the black cat, hugged the little white cat in her arms a bit tighter, and responded in a muffled voice, ”Once, I was attacked by a group of wild cats in the grove, and it was this black cat that helped me chase those wild cats away...”

”Those cats were not wild cats; some of them were the school’s Spiritual Cats, and some were students’ pet cats,” Xiao Xiao promptly corrected the Little Witch’s mistaken assumption.

Li Meng ignored him and continued, ”...I still remember this black cat can grow bigger and smaller, super fierce!”

Fierce, me? Zheng Qing leaned forward, his head suddenly swelling several times larger, his eyes yellow and glaring, fixedly staring at the Little Witch with a look full of anger.

Li Meng got a fright and couldn’t help but burp.

Doctor Xiao promptly pressed his hand on the black cat’s head, pushing it back behind him, then, with a smile, explained, ”This cat is from Professor Montreya’s laboratory...You all know the research areas of Professor Montreya.”

”So how did you meet it?” Nicholas raised his eyebrows, ”If I’m not mistaken, Professor Montreya doesn’t have freshman courses, right?”

Xiao Xiao didn’t even blink as he immediately came up with a fitting response, ”Brother Qing has been working as an assistant in Montreya Laboratory recently, and he occasionally brings this cat back to the dormitory... Our dormitory also has a Spiritual Cat named Tuan Tuan, who is quite familiar with it.”

The black cat let out an ’ow’ just at the right time, affirming that what the Doctor had said was all correct, just like that.

Nicholas finally stopped obsessing over the origins of the two cats.

Although tonight’s search team comprised him, Xiao Xiao, and Li Meng, given Li Meng’s way of doing things, she was basically just making up the numbers, leaving only him and the Doctor as the real members of the search team. Yet the search area wasn’t much smaller than usual. Thus, tonight’s task was still daunting, with no time to waste on cats and dogs.

Nicholas didn’t intend to waste energy on cats and dogs, but the two cats thought otherwise.

After going through the triple turmoil of rage, rampage, and thrashing, Jiang Xiaomao finally remembered his purpose, popped out his claws, hooked onto Li Meng’s collar, and gingerly tugged on it.

Li Meng was looking down at the stuffed bear——right after she had thrown away the bear, it had staggeringly run back, now climbing up her leg, trying to get back into its owner’s arms——Li Meng needed to be careful not to let this stuffed bear crease her robe.

Feeling the tug at her collar, the Little Witch looked down and just saw the anxious eyes of the little white cat.

”Meow!” The little white cat called out firmly, swung its tail, and gestured for Li Meng to put it down.

The Little Witch hesitated for a few seconds before finally compromising and setting the little white cat on the ground.

No sooner had it hit the ground than the little white cat arched its back, lifted its tail, and quickly ran towards the open grass outside the pavilion. After a few steps, it looked back at Li Meng, tilted its head, and gestured for her to follow.

Li Meng, without hesitation, climbed over the gallery railing and followed.

During Xiao Xiao’s brief daze, he was surprised to see a certain black cat also shake its tail, running in the direction the little white cat had gone, while signaling him to follow. Doctor Xiao, thoughtful, realized that Zheng Qing must have discovered something.

”What are you all doing?” Nicholas, coming to his senses, saw his teammates crossing the railing and running deep into the lawn, couldn’t help but call out in a low voice, ”That’s not our search direction for today!”

”I think they must have discovered something. Maybe we did something wrong from the start,” Xiao Xiao turned his head, his tone filled with jest, ”Professional tasks should be handled by professionals... I think when it comes to hunting small animals on campus, these cats and dogs are a bit more professional than we are.”

Nicholas stood dumbfounded, watching as his two companions ran farther and farther away, only to reluctantly follow them with his notebook in hand, sighing as he went.

Soon, the group arrived at the spot where Zheng Qing had hidden the snake molt.

Zheng Qing dug out the snake molt again.

Li Meng, holding Xiao Bai the cat in her arms, jumped around excitedly; Zheng Qing had reason to believe that if she wasn’t worried about attracting the patrol team or unfamiliar figures, the Little Witch would definitely have screamed.

Xiao Xiao furrowed his brow, squatting in front of the buried snake molt, not rushing to dig it out.

Black Cat Zheng followed Xiao Xiao’s back, climbing onto his shoulder—because Xiao Xiao was quite small, Zheng Qing had to shrink his body a bit, becoming about the size of Xiao Bai—then he used his front paws to cling to Xiao Xiao’s shoulders, peering down with a serious cat face.

Nicholas also squatted beside Xiao Xiao, wearing silkworm gloves and carefully brushed the scales of the snake molt.

A fine layer of scale dust stained the gloves.

”No mistake, it’s this one,” Nicholas finally let go of the heavy burden in his heart, took a long breath, and when he looked at Black Cat again, his eyes undisguisedly filled with admiration, ”You have really good cats!”

Zheng Qing lifted his chin, proudly flicking his whiskers.

Then he suddenly realized something, turning his head to look at the Xiao Bai cat in Li Meng’s arms.

Xiao Bai was also staring right at him.

Both cats’ gazes were filled with suspicion.

Jiang Xiaomao had confirmation—Zheng Qing was this Black Cat—regardless of how Zheng Qing had broken through Mendel’s Paradox, or Xiao Xiao’s eerie explanation moments ago, Jiang Yu could affirm one hundred percent that Zheng Qing was this Black Cat!

Because when Black Cat communicated with Xiao Xiaoeye, Jiang Xiaomao had seen such expressions between Zheng Qing and Xiao Xiao before!

Zheng Qing then began to suspect the relationship between Jiang Yu and the Xiao Bai cat.

He remembered clearly that because of the murder case by the lake last semester, Jiang Yu had told him more than once that she wouldn’t adopt a new cat until the murderer was caught; coupled with Xiao Bai’s feline form; and Li Meng’s timid behavior towards Xiao Bai, Zheng Qing suddenly had a terrible hypothesis—Jiang Yu was this Xiao Bai cat.

After this thought popped into his head, Zheng Qing was startled by his own idea.

What was more frightening, were the ’subconscious’ acts of ear licking that occurred between the two cats while they had been chasing and fighting each other before. If Xiao Bai was just a cat, Zheng Qing, although slightly uneasy, could accept it.

But if Xiao Bai cat was Jiang Yu.

Zheng Qing shuddered involuntarily. No, there must be some misunderstanding here. Black Cat comforted himself internally; as a cat now, his logical thinking might somewhat lack. There must have been a mistake somewhere!

While the two cats were struggling internally, Xiao Xiao finally finished inspecting the snake molt, stood up, and sighed deeply.

”It is indeed a snake molt,”

Xiao Xiao stood up, glancing at his companions, but his eyes showed no signs of happiness, instead he looked very serious, ”But this is also a ’Painted Skin’.”
