High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1060: Chapter 122: The 5th Monday

It was another Monday morning, and another one of Old Yao’s curse courses awaited.

The two-day weekend had passed in the blink of an eye, but it effortlessly inflicted everyone with post-holiday syndrome. On top of that, for some unknown reason, the School Works Committee orchestrated a late cold snap last night. The howling chill wind had battered at the balcony windows all night long, creating a clamor like a rough lullaby, causing everyone in the dorm to uncontrollably collapse into their bedding early in the morning.

In the end, it was Doctor Xiao, whose will was just a tad bit firmer, who struggled into his robe and also helped by yanking open Zheng Qing’s mosquito net, pulling off Zheng Qing’s quilt, and dragging him along to attend morning class.

Zheng Qing clicked his mouth in bitterness, sluggishly got up with drooping eyelids, finished washing up, and unexpectedly heard the vigorous snores emanating from Xin Fat Man’s bed. Anger surged from his heart, and, with a swoosh, he pulled open the curtains on the balcony.

It was mid-March, and the morning sun had a slightly piercing quality to it, especially since the night’s cold breeze had swept the clouds from the sky, leaving the sunlight coming in more briskly than before.

Since Dylan usually slept inside his large coffin, the only one in the dorm vulnerable to the sunlight now was Xin Fat Man.

The robust snoring from Fat Man’s bedding came to an abrupt halt.

However, contrary to Zheng Qing’s expectations, another soft snore continued, lingering and sporadic. Zheng Qing blinked, and quickly realized that the second snoring must be Fatty Cat’s sound.

Since Fat Man had an ample supply of snacks next to him and had turned his bed into an exceptionally cozy nest, Tuan Tuan often spent most of its time on Fat Man’s bed.

”I want to continue hibernating, don’t disturb me,” Xin Fat Man grumbled, pulling the quilt from his chin up to his forehead to shield his eyes from the glaring sun.

Just as Zheng Qing was wondering why Fat Man was in such a good mood, a muffled voice came from the depths of the bedding: ”Team Leader, for the sake of our fellowship and schoolmate relationship, please bring back some breakfast for your dear hunter when you return... I thank you in advance.”

At the mention of ’breakfast,’ the rumbling purr of Fatty Cat instantly extinguished, followed by a lazily uttered ’meow,’ indicating it wanted to eat as well.

Zheng Qing snickered, ”Wow, such a mercenary, no feelings at all.”

The quilt wriggled a few times, and Fat Man struggled for a moment, ultimately unable to break free from that powerful ’seal,’ and grumbled helplessly, ”I’m leading the search tonight.”

The statement was abrupt and seemed nonsensical, but it didn’t hinder Zheng Qing’s understanding.

Considering the complex situation at the school recently, in order to locate Liu Fei Fei’s giant snake and the elusive No Face monster as quickly as possible, Zheng Qing and the rest had agreed last night to conduct searches every evening starting this week—given the tight schedule Monday through Friday, the Absolution Hunting Team adopted a rotation system.

While it was a rotation, the lack of manpower inevitably meant some had to take extra shifts, and some had fewer. As the Hunting Team Leader, Zheng Qing had to bite the bullet and work harder, with the scheduled Monday night also being his shift.

Hearing Fat Man willingly take over his duty for the evening, Zheng Qing felt a sense of relief.

This made him feel slightly ashamed, unable to help but advise Fat Man, ”You can’t sleep forever, there’s still Old Yao’s class in the morning, you have to get up eventually.”

”Time to get up, though we must sleep eventually,” Xin Fat Man yawned grandly under the covers, complaining languidly, ”Utterly meaningless.”

”That sounds as absurd as someone saying ’Since you have to breathe out, what’s the point of breathing in?’” Doctor Xiao, already clad in his robe, taunted.

Zheng Qing, fearful the two might bicker further and rouse Xin Fat Man from his stupor, hurriedly interrupted in a hushed voice, ”We might take a stroll by the lake later... If you wake up and we’re not back, just head straight to the classroom.”

A muffled response came from under the covers, and after a moment, the combined snoring of Xin Fat Man and Fat Cat rose and fell, echoing once again in the dormitory.

After handing the skin cream to the sprite, Zheng Qing tightened his robe’s belt and pushed open the door, sighing, ”Is he really just a Blue Giant? I always feel like he might have some Bear eccentric monster blood in him or something...”

”Possibly.” Xiao Xiao followed Zheng Qing out with his collar pulled up high, burying his face inside it and said in a muffled voice, ”The wizard world has been developing for so long, who knows what odd beings could be in our bloodlines after dozens of generations?”

”Maybe I should take some of Xin Fat Man’s blood and ask a senior to help test it next time I go to the Montreya Laboratory.” Zheng Qing stepped out of Dormitory Hill and immediately shivered.

Although the night has passed and the chilly wind had abated, it still felt extremely biting compared to the previous days. Anyone would find the blade-like cold wind outdoors unbearable.

”Why does the school have to torture us like this?!” the young tuition-free student wailed, ”Isn’t just going through the motions enough?!”

”Because this Friday is the spring equinox.” Xiao Xiao’s head was hidden behind his collar, his voice mingling with the wind, somewhat ambiguous.

”What?” Zheng Qing called out, cocking his ear.

”This Friday is the spring equinox!” Xiao Xiao pulled his collar down a bit and shouted louder, ”The weather monitor has saved up a lot of winter’s Weather Beads, some of which are near breaking point... If we don’t use them all before the spring equinox, it will be a waste. It will also lower the scores for the officers on duty.”

Weather Beads are Magic Artifacts used by the weather monitor to control the school’s climate, only the size of a fist, and shaped similar to the snow globes Zheng Qing played with as a child. However, unlike snow globes, there are not only ’snowfall’ climate types in Weather Beads, but also ’wind’, ’rain’, ’thunder’, ’lightning’, and many other varieties. Even within the ’wind’ category, there are dozens of climate variations, such as ’breeze’, ’gale’, ’cold wind’, ’warm wind’, and so on.

Every January, the School Works Committee applies for Weather Beads of various numbers and types according to the previous year’s ’settlement’ of climate changes and the next year’s ’budget’ for weather planning, to adjust the climate on Buji Island.

What Xiao Xiao mentioned about ’the weather monitor saving many of winter’s Weather Beads’ refers to the situation where the budget was not entirely used up and there’s a rush to use it before the holiday.

”Turns out there really is nothing new under the sun,” Zheng Qing mused, shaking his head. In the end, he didn’t say anything more but just tucked his head into his collar, with hands in his sleeves, and hurried towards the Flying Garden.

He had already wasted a lot of time getting up this morning, and if he didn’t hurry, the better spots for morning practice in the Flying Garden would be taken by others — of that, he had no doubt.

After all, this was First University, and though there were lazy folks like Xin Fat Man, there were far more diligent young wizards practicing hard.
