High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 951: Chapter 13: Left Unresolved

”What was the strength level of that dog demon?”

”About a 5-6 in strength.”

”How long did your battle last?”

”Ten seconds? Fifteen seconds at most... I was using a Charm Gun, which is very fast.”

”Were there other eyewitnesses at the scene besides you two?”

”My grandfather and father were also there, but they’re not wizards, and the area was enveloped in smoke at that time, so they didn’t see the dog demon.”

”So you’re saying, apart from yourself, no one else, and no demon, or any other evidence, can corroborate what you’re saying, right?” After a brief line of questioning and taking notes, the Trishula Commissioner put away his notebook and concluded as such.

Zheng Qing suddenly felt displeased.

”You don’t believe what I’m saying?” he retorted, and then puffing out his chest, he declared, ”I am a sponsored student in the freshman class of Jiuyou Academy at First University. The hunting team I formed won the championship in the freshman competition, and I have had more than three encounters with demons in the past half year. It’s impossible for me to make a mistake about something like this.”

His words were confident and resounding, causing the commissioner to look at him with a sidelong glance.

If it were in the past, faced with the denial of others, Zheng Qing would have mostly waved his hand and laughed it off, certainly not defending himself so vehemently and seriously. He used to detest these kinds of arguments.

However, after half a year of studying at First University, whether it was the subtle influence of his companions or because of his broadened horizons, he felt that sometimes he should, and indeed must, stand firm in his opinions.

”No, no, no, I am not doubting your words,” Li Yijin waved his hand, denying it while explaining: ”I am just saying you ’don’t have’ evidence to prove what you’re saying.”

That’s the same thing, Zheng Qing muttered to himself silently.

”Furthermore, your claim that the invading demon was eaten by your cat is also questionable,” said Li Yijin as he crouched down to look levelly at the Yellow Flowered Cat, simultaneously reaching out to pet its head: ”I see from the Alliance’s materials that you are a student at First University, right?”

Zheng Qing warily answered with a yes.

To him, Brother Huang had always had a foul temper, so he was somewhat concerned about the Trishula Commissioner’s rash actions. Just as expected, as soon as Li Yijin’s hand neared the Yellow Flowered Cat, it received a fierce swat.

”Ouch!” Mr. Commissioner inhaled sharply, quickly retracting his hand and cautiously checked the back of it. Fortunately, the Yellow Flowered Cat had only given him a slap with its paw, without really using its claws.

Brother Huang is a bit short-tempered,” Zheng Qing explained slowly, after Li Yijin had suffered a slight mishap: ”But it did indeed eat that dog demon.”

”Did you see it?” Li Yijin countered, not waiting for Zheng Qing’s response, he continued, ”Even middle school students know about the strong contamination of demon flesh and blood. As a student of First University, you can’t be unaware of this... Using or consuming unpurified and unprocessed demon flesh and blood is highly likely to result in demonic contamination.”

While saying this, he took another careful look into the eyes of the Yellow Flowered Cat, adding, ”Based on the current observations, your cat doesn’t show tendencies of demonization... hmmm, except for the bad temper.”

Zheng Qing stood by silently.

Although he had subdued the dog demon on the spot, he hadn’t actually witnessed its final fate. It was just that Brother Huang claimed it had eaten the demon, so Zheng Qing naturally believed it.

Now that he thought about it, the words of the Trishula Commissioner made a lot of sense.

During Zheng Qing’s silence, Li Yijin added, as if reminding, ”...If you want to apply for compensation from the Alliance or request an investigation by the Trishula, you will need to provide concrete and valid assessment of the damage, or evidence that the wild demon had been present.”

”I can apply for compensation?” Zheng Qing immediately abandoned his silence, his face lighting up with joy.

He had initially just wanted to figure out why that wild demon appeared in his residential community, but if he could get some compensation out of it, that would be even better.

”Security measures like those in your home are set up and maintained by the First University commissioning the Mage Alliance. So, in theory, if there is an accident involving the security measures, you could claim compensation through the school from the Mage Alliance,” Li Yijin stood up, putting away his notebook, and while patiently explaining the compensation principles to Zheng Qing, he emphasized again, ”But the prerequisite for applying for compensation is evidence... you must provide proof of the injury or traces of the intruder.”

”Besides getting a little spooked, I haven’t suffered any other losses,” Zheng Qing said somewhat conflicted, ”Can I claim compensation for emotional distress?”

Li Yijin gave him a deep look.

The young state-funded student felt his ears burning and immediately stretched out his hand, pointing to the Yellow Flowered Cat by his feet, ”As for evidence of that demon dog’s appearance... Brother Huang can testify!”

”That thing?” Li Yijin’s face showed a hint of impatience—in the wizard world, using animals as witnesses wasn’t unusual. The supreme court of Danghag’s wizards even had a series of standard documents. But that didn’t mean any animal could testify in court.

”Has it gone through the Alliance’s standard intelligence test?” the commissioner asked cautiously, ”Also, you just mentioned it ate that demon dog... If we want reliable evidence, we might need to conduct a simple gastrointestinal examination.”

Before Zheng Qing could speak, the Yellow Flowered Cat spoke up:

”Are all the kids from the Trishula this dumb now, or did they specifically send a moron over?”

After saying this, it provocatively flicked its tail, flattening its airplane ears even more.

Li Yijin’s face instantly darkened.

Zheng Qing’s face grew somewhat pale, ”Haha... Just kidding, Brother Huang likes to make such jokes... haha.”

The Trishula commissioner took a deep breath, reopened his notebook, and while writing said, ”Since it has the capability to insult with reason, we can temporarily consider it to have ’suspected standard intelligence’...”

Zheng Qing held back Brother Huang, who seemed ready to explode.

On the other hand, Li Yijin had already completed the investigation notes.

”I have finished investigating all the aspects that could be surveyed on the scene, and found no evidence of the accident you mentioned,” Commissioner Li stated with a stern face, ”For now, we can only conclude that the protection spell malfunctioned in some unknown manner... If you insist on your claim, we will need your cooperation in the investigation, which means you’ll have to follow me back to the Trishula for further evidence collection, and this cat as well. Moreover, you’ll need to fill out the relevant application forms, a detailed case report, and so forth.”

Zheng Qing looked down at Brother Huang, sighed deeply.

”Forget it,” the young wizard muttered, ”I still have to celebrate New Year’s today.”

Commissioner Li obviously breathed a sigh of relief as well.

”Then, let’s consider this matter closed,” his tone was noticeably brighter, ”Thank you for understanding our work, and I wish you a happy New Year’s Eve!”

Having said that, the wizard in the black robe nodded, turned around, and vanished without a trace.
