Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 690: Chapter 691: Shouldering the Responsibility

”Brother Meng, we have been old neighbors for many years, and we are both well aware of each other’s character. Brother Meng is a reasonable man, but now my son lies in the ICU, bleeding from his head. What do you have to say about that?”

If Chiang Xiao were here, she would certainly praise Meng Chaojun.

It could be said that from his appearance, Meng Xinian still closely resembled his father, with the same bushy eyebrows and large eyes, and a tall stature.

At over forty, Meng Chaojun was still very handsome.

Some once said that if Meng Chaojun hadn’t been so handsome, he wouldn’t have managed to marry a beauty ten years his junior without a word of complaint to become his stepmother.

Meng Chaojun’s second wife, Duan Qingqing, was only thirty-two this year, but because of her good care for herself, she looked as if she were only twenty-six or twenty-seven, and standing next to Meng Xinian, they looked more like siblings.

Meng Chaojun treated her like a precious jewel, as if he was afraid she would melt in his mouth or break if he held her too tightly, like doting on a daughter. This affection between Meng and Duan was either admired or despised by others, but that was just the outsiders who would soon forget.

For Meng Xinian, that was a scene he did not wish to gaze upon one second longer.

Meng Chaojun, with a serious face, said to Father Fong, ”We can all understand Brother Fong’s emotions, however, we still need to wait for Jianye to wake up and find out what really happened to determine the matter. Although my boy has been domineering and unruly since he was young, I believe there must be some misunderstanding in this incident...”

”Misunderstanding?” Father Fong sneered, ”You know all too well how your son has been overbearing and wild since he was young, and he’s become even more so as he grew up! Because of a small misunderstanding, you’d let him beat my son to this state? It seems like it’s not your son lying in there, so you don’t care at all!”

Duan Qingqing had just rushed over and happened to overhear this remark. She immediately took over, ”Old Fong, please don’t panic. Jianye will have good fortune because he has a heart of gold, and I’m sure he’ll be fine! We’ll take care of all the necessary hospital expenses, and if there’s a need for a caregiver, Old Meng and I will certainly not hesitate. Right now, the most important thing is the child. When he wakes up, let Xinian go and apologize...”

Before she could finish, Meng Xinian couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh.

”Whoever said it should go and do it, but please speak for yourself, do not speak for me.”

”Meng Xinian!” Meng Chaojun saw his beloved wife’s face filled with hurt and could not help but shout in anger, ”What kind of attitude is that? Your Aunt Qing is kindly trying to clean up your mess, and you act like she owes you something?”

Old Meng also shouted in anger, ”Why are you yelling? I haven’t even spoken yet, what crime are you rushing to admit to?”

”Dad, I’m not rushing to admit any crime,” Duan Qingqing’s eyes reddened as she said, ”I just feel that, after all, it’s Jianye who is lying in the ICU. No matter what, our family’s Xinian is still fine, so what’s the harm in apologizing to the Fong family first? Whatever responsibility we should take, we cannot shy away from it.”

At that moment, Gao Wei came over accompanied by Gao’s Father, who with a glint in his eye, said, ”Old Meng, this is what they say about marrying wisely. Sister-in-law’s conduct is truly beyond reproach, so open and generous. I’ll talk to Old Fong, we are all hoping Jianye will be alright, and we can discuss it further once he regains consciousness.”

Old Meng felt an indignant collapse.

Was this praise of a wise wife a slap to his own face?

If it wasn’t for this daughter-in-law, would there be such a mess at home that made his eldest grandson not want to come back? What nonsense was that woman talking about, ’whatever responsibility we should take’?

He did not believe his eldest grandson would have been so excessive as to put Jianye in such a state!

The instant his daughter-in-law spoke, she placed all the blame on Xinian’s shoulders! And now they were supposed to compensate and pay for expenses, what compensation? What fees?
