I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

It started with the small things.

A golden retriever in Camden, sitting at its owner’s feet in the kitchen, staring at the floor — not at a spot on the floor but at the floor itself, the tiles a window into something the dog could sense and its owner could not. It whined, low and continuous, the sound of an animal that wants to flee but does not know which way to run. The owner posted a video; it got forty thousand views in two hours. People thought it was funny.

London Zoo reported its wolves pacing — not the territorial circuit but a new, tighter, agitated pattern, moving in formation toward the southwest corner of the enclosure. A behaviourist was called. She had no explanation.

Then the Underground staff reported that the rats had left. Not died, not exterminated — left. The tunnels between King’s Cross and Russell Square, the stretch running closest to the museum, closest to the deep chamber, were suddenly, completely empty. No rats, no mice, no insects. The pest-control contractor filed a report using the word ”unprecedented” three times.

And the Thames was running cold.

Sarah Cole noticed it first. She had assigned herself surface-level monitoring — Arthur had given her a list: unusual animal behaviour, temperature fluctuations, equipment failures in specific zones — and she had organised the data with the precision of a woman who had spent twenty years building cases from circumstantial evidence.

”Thames Water temperature readings.” She spread a map across Arthur’s desk. Wednesday, ten in the morning; their usual meeting time, though its nature had changed considerably. ”Fourteen monitoring stations. Most normal. But these three — Westminster, Waterloo, London Bridge — are dropping. Two degrees below seasonal average. Three in the last week.”

Arthur traced the three stations. A rough triangle, centred on a point beneath the river.

”Directly above the seal.”

”Exactly. And the drops are accelerating — half a degree two weeks ago, three now. Whatever is happening down there is getting worse.”

Arthur picked up his tea, sipped, set it down. ”What about missing persons?”

”Seventeen reports in two weeks, all within half a mile of the Northern line between King’s Cross and Bank. Three times the normal rate. The Met are treating them as unrelated — no common demographics. But they are all in the same corridor.”

”Underground access?”

”Oyster data confirms at least twelve passed through stations in the zone within forty-eight hours of vanishing.”

Arthur’s expression did not change, but Sarah had learned to read the micro-expressions on his mild features — the slight tightening around the eyes, the shift in breathing. Concern. Not for himself. For seventeen people who had walked into the Underground and not come back.

”Sarah, I need you to do something. It’s dangerous.”

”Everything you ask is dangerous. Last week I delivered a message to a vampire. The week before, I helped a werewolf file an animal control complaint.”

”This is more dangerous than both.”

He laid it out: follow the pattern geographically, not forensically. Walk the corridor above ground, looking for physical anomalies — cracks, fissures, access points the Remnant’s influence might have opened, tunnels no human hand had dug. Do not enter anything. Photograph it. Call him immediately.

”Don’t go underground. Don’t enter anything.”

”Understood.”

The supernatural world was on edge.

Eleanor reported it at their Thursday session. The Conclave’s Veil Monitoring System was registering noise rather than alarms — static, the interference of a powerful energy source pressing on the ambient magical field. ”Like standing next to a generator. Every mage in London feels it. Spells misfiring, ward matrices drifting. Thorne’s laboratory nearly blew up yesterday because a containment circle he drew thirty years ago suddenly resonated at the wrong frequency.”

”Anyone hurt?”

”His pride, and a table. But the trend is concerning. Whatever the Remnant is doing, it is affecting the whole supernatural ecosystem.”

Marcus confirmed it from the vampire side: younger vampires losing control, feeding impulses spiking, dark energy surging unpredictably; two had gone feral and been restrained. ”It is the Remnant’s energy leaking through the seal. Not enough to break free — enough to resonate. Dark energy is pulled toward it, like iron filings to a magnet. The older vampires resist. The younger cannot.”

Maeve reported the same from Scotland: the Pack’s younger wolves shifting involuntarily, bones breaking and reforming, three restrained at an entirely unremarkable full moon. ”The bloodline energy is resonating like a tuning fork. My wolves say it feels like something is calling them.”

”Calling them where?”

”South. Toward London. Toward the seal.”

Arthur hung up and sat in the institutional hum of the museum — a building full of dead things, curated by the living, built on top of something that was neither.

On the fourteenth night he descended to the Blood Coffin chamber alone. He told no one — not Eleanor, not Marcus, not Sarah. This was between him and the seal.

His divine sense traced the dual-energy formation he had built two weeks before: lingqi anchors intact, dark energy anchors intact, central node stable. But the seams were different.

The seams — the points where the two incompatible energies met and interlocked, the joints Arthur had designed to be tight as meshing gears — were no longer tight. The Remnant had been working on them. Not forcefully; surgically. It had analysed the formation the way Arthur analysed ancient texts, found its patterns and structural principles — and found the designed weaknesses, the inevitable imperfections every formation carries, which a cultivator spends years minimising and a patient enemy spends years exploiting.

The erosion was subtle, almost imperceptible — energy drawn toward the Remnant at the interface points, widening micro-fissures, undoing his work seam by patient seam. The crack had widened two millimetres in two weeks, and the rate was accelerating: the first millimetre had taken ten days, the second four.

The Remnant was learning. Not just the seal — energy systems. How lingqi worked, how dark energy worked, how the two could be interlocked and therefore un-made. It was reverse-engineering his formation, deconstructing his design principles.

It was learning cultivation.

Not the techniques — the principles, the underlying logic of energy manipulation. The Remnant was pure energy; it did not need techniques. It needed concepts. And it was learning them from Arthur’s own formation, as a student learns from a textbook.

Arthur ascended, made tea, and picked up the talisman.

”Senior brother.”

Li Wei’s voice came immediately, seven thousand kilometres away. ”Arthur. It is late.”

”I need you in Britain.”

”Why?”

”Because I think we’re going to need two Soul Formation cultivators.”

Silence — the silence of a man processing implications. Li Wei was older than Arthur by three centuries, more powerful, less interested in the mortal world; he had not left the Kunlun range in a century.

”The Remnant,” Li Wei said. Not a question.

”It’s learning. The dual-energy formation — it is deconstructing it. Not by force. By analysis. Finding the grammar, the syntax, the structural logic.”

”Learning cultivation.”

”Yes.”

A longer silence. ”The Lushan Remnant did the same, three thousand years ago — studied its containment for decades before finding the weakness. Four Soul Formation cultivators contained it, and all four died rebuilding the seal after it cracked.”

”I know.”

”The tribulation risk of two Soul Formation auras in proximity—”

”I know. A full tribulation storm — the kind that levels mountains. The last time two stood together in the Central Plains, it destroyed a city.”

”Arthur. The fail-safe — you have considered it.”

”Senior brother, I have considered everything.” The detonation required a Soul Formation dantian at the epicentre; the strain would destroy it. A cultivator without a dantian is a mortal — four hundred years of cultivation gone in an instant. Arthur had done the arithmetic.

”If the seal breaks,” he said, ”the tribulation will be the least of our problems.”

”How fast can it learn?”

”Accelerating. Two weeks ago it was brute-forcing the seal. Now it is performing surgery. If the rate continues, it will have the formation fully mapped within a month. Perhaps less.”

Wind through the talisman — cold, clean, carrying snow and lingqi. ”Three days. I can be in Britain in three days. I cannot exactly take a commercial flight.”

”Fly to London. Someone mortal will meet you — she’ll handle the logistics.”

”Your detective.”

”She is more than a detective now. She is the only mortal who knows the full picture.”

”Three days, junior brother. Do nothing reckless.”

”I am a museum researcher who drinks tea and reads novels. What could I possibly do that is reckless?”

”Goodnight, Arthur.”

Two days later, Sarah Cole found the tunnel.

She had walked the route at night, torch, camera, and a can of pepper spray Arthur had called ”entirely inadequate but better than nothing.” She found it behind a construction hoarding near Russell Square: a crack in the pavement whose edges were not jagged but smooth — glassy, the asphalt having been dissolved rather than broken. The gap widened, descended.

She crouched at the edge and shone the torch in. The beam fell into darkness and did not come back. The gap was narrow, barely body-width, but it went down — how far she could not tell, because the light simply stopped, absorbed, as though the dark below were not the absence of light but the presence of something that consumed it.

She did not enter. She photographed it — seven shots, flash on and off. In the first five, the tunnel was dark and empty. In the sixth, angled downward with the flash, there was a shape — not solid, not shadow, a distortion, a place where the darkness was darker, where the light bent and was swallowed. In the seventh, the distortion had moved. Closer to the opening. Closer to where she had been crouching.

Sarah stood, stepped back twice, and walked — did not run, because running would imply panic, and Sarah Cole did not panic — to her car, where she sat with her hands on the wheel for five minutes, breathing carefully, before calling Arthur.

”I found it. The tunnel, near Russell Square. It goes down — I don’t know how far. My torch light just stops. And Arthur, there’s something in it. I photographed it. It moved.”

”Are you safe?”

”I’m in my car. But the photographs — it wasn’t there, and then it was. And then it was closer.”

”Don’t go back. I’ll seal the access tonight.”

”Arthur. What is it? What’s down there?”

When he spoke, his voice was different — not louder, not more intense, just heavier, the weight of four hundred years on each word.

”The Remnant is building tunnels. Passages. Extending its influence upward. It is not breaking the seal from below anymore, Sarah. It is going around it.”

That night, Arthur sat on his rooftop at three in the morning. The city spread below — millions of lives unaware of what lay beneath their feet. His divine sense reached down through strata and conduits to the seal.

He felt the crack widen. A millimetre. Then another. Then another.

And then he felt something new — a cold wind through an open window.

The Remnant was building.

Not breaking. Building. It had taken the energies it absorbed — the lingqi leaking through the seal, the dark energy resonating to it, the ambient magic the Conclave’s sensors read as static — and it was shaping them, structuring them, arranging them in patterns Arthur recognised.

Formation patterns.

The Remnant was building its own formation, applying the principles of cultivation it had reverse-engineered from Arthur’s own work.

Arthur’s blood went cold. He picked up the talisman, hand steady — the steadiness a choice, not a reflex, four hundred years of discipline holding back four hundred years of fear.

”Senior brother.”

”Arthur. It is the middle of the night.”

”Forget three days. Come now.”

A pause. ”What happened?”

Arthur looked at the city — the lights, the cold river, the dark sky above and the darker thing below.

”It’s learning,” he said. ”The Remnant is learning cultivation.”

Silence from the talisman. Wind in the Kunlun Mountains. The weight of history pressing down on a single moment.

”I’m leaving now,” Li Wei said.
