I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The British Museum archive was in the basement — and the question Sarah Cole had come to answer was simple: how far back did Arthur Pendleton’s employment go?

Not the public basement — the real one. Three stories below street level, past the conservation labs and the storage vaults and the climate-controlled rooms where the Elgin Marbles sat in the dark, breathing their slow, mineral breath. Down a corridor that required a security pass Sarah had obtained by showing her warrant card and lying convincingly about a fraud investigation. Through a fire door with a rusted handle. Into a room that smelled of dust and old paper and an indefinable scent of time.

The archive was the museum’s institutional memory — staff records, departmental correspondence, acquisition logs. Some of the records went back to the museum’s founding in 1753, handwritten on paper that had turned the colour of weak tea. It had no digital index and no full-time archivist; it had a part-time volunteer named Margaret, seventy-three, who had been cataloguing the collection ”for a few years” — a phrase that, on investigation, proved to mean thirty-one.

Margaret had shown Sarah to the staff directories and left her to it. The directories were bound volumes — leather, then cloth, then spiral-bound cardboard — listing every employee, by department, by year. The earliest dated from 1894.

Sarah started with the most recent — 2024 — and confirmed what she knew: Dr. Arthur Pendleton, Research Associate, Department of East Asian Antiquities. Room 4.17. Unremarkable. The photograph showed a pleasant face, dark hair, reading glasses.

She moved backward. 2020. Same entry, same photograph. 2015. Same. She paused. Identical — not a different photo of the same person, the same photograph, same lighting, same faint shadow on the left of the jaw. Institutions were lazy about updating directory photos; Sarah’s own warrant-card picture was six years old. She went further.

2010. Different photograph. Same face. The difference — when she looked, hard, for several minutes — was the hair: in 2024, dark with grey at the temples; in 2010, dark, no grey.

2006 — the year the man had supposedly enrolled at university. Dr. A. Pendleton, Research Associate, East Asian Antiquities. Room 4.17. Different photograph. Same face.

Sarah’s hands were steady. She was a police officer. There were explanations — a father, a grandfather, a family of museum academics, genetic resemblance. She intended to find the one that fit.

2000. Dr. A. Pendleton. Room 4.17. Same face. Same glasses. Same tweed jacket — the same herringbone pattern, the same frayed cuffs.

2001. 1980. Dr. A. Pendleton. Room 4.17.

2002. Senior Research Associate. Room 4.17. The photograph — black and white, grainy — showed a man in a tweed jacket and reading glasses before a case of Shang bronzes, looking at the camera with the mild, patient expression of someone who would prefer to be working. His face was unlined. He was, by any visual assessment, the same age as the man Sarah had interviewed in this building two weeks ago.

The same man.

She closed the directory. Opened it. Looked at the photograph. Closed it. Dust motes drifted in the single fluorescent tube’s light; the tube buzzed, an insectile hum that she had not noticed until the silence pressed against her eardrums and the buzz became the only sound in a world that had suddenly, quietly, stopped making sense.

1947. Post-war, paper thin and cheap, photographs omitted — but the entry was there: Dr. A. Pendleton, Research Associate, Eastern Antiquities. Room 4.17.

1948. Dr. A. Pendleton, Assistant Curator, Eastern Antiquities. Room 4.17. And a photograph — a sepia print pasted with yellowed, cracked glue — of a man in a dark three-piece suit, with reading glasses and dark hair, and a face that Sarah Cole, who had spent fourteen years memorising faces, recognised with instantaneous, bone-deep certainty.

It was Arthur Pendleton. Not a relative. Not an ancestor. Arthur Pendleton — the same face, the same eyes, the same expression of mild academic patience — the photographer taking an unreasonable amount of time, and bronzes waiting to be catalogued.

1923. A hundred and one years ago.

Sarah’s hands were not steady anymore.

1910. Assistant Curator. No photograph. 1901. Junior Curator. No photograph. 1894 — the earliest volume. A. Pendleton, Assistant to the Keeper, Department of Oriental Antiquities. No photograph, but the entry was handwritten — ink, flowing Victorian script — recording the name, the department, and the room.

Room 4.17.

For a hundred and thirty years, a man named A. Pendleton had worked in Room 4.17 of the British Museum. The titles changed — Assistant to the Keeper, Junior Curator, Assistant Curator, Research Associate, Senior Research Associate — and the department’s name changed, Oriental to Eastern to East Asian. But the photographs, where they existed, showed the same face. The same glasses. The same tweed.

Sarah sat in the archive, surrounded by a hundred and thirty years of staff directories, and questioned her sanity — as a scientist questions a data point that does not fit the model. Methodically. Systematically.

Assumption one: different men who resembled each other. Rejected. She had trained with the Met’s facial recognition unit; identified suspects from grainy CCTV and sketches and photographs taken decades apart. The 1923 face was not a resemblance. The bone structure was identical, the eye spacing identical — even the way the left ear sat slightly higher than the right, a detail she had noticed during the interview and written in her notebook, because detectives noticed ears.

Assumption two: institutional error — duplicated names, misfiled records. Rejected. The progression was logical, the career of a man who had risen at a pace suggesting competence without ambition; the room number consistent through every volume for a hundred and thirty years. This was not an error. This was a record.

Assumption three: Arthur Pendleton was not a normal human being.

Sarah sat with that for a long time. The tube buzzed. The dust motes drifted. She did not accept it — she was a police officer; she dealt in evidence, not the supernatural. But she could not reject it either, because the physical, documentary, photographic evidence before her did not fit any model she had been trained to operate within.

She photographed everything — every entry, every page, no flash, documenting like a crime scene. She shot the 1923 sepia print three times, from different angles, until the image was sharp and undeniable. Then she put the volumes back, nodded to Margaret, rode the lift to the ground floor, crossed Great Russell Street, and sat on the steps of the building opposite, and breathed.

March in London. Grey sky. People walking past — tourists, students, office workers — living their normal lives in their normal city, while Sarah Cole sat on the steps and felt the world tilt beneath her.

She did not cry. She did not panic. She breathed for three minutes. Then she stood, crossed the street, and went back into the museum.

Room 4.17 was on the fourth floor. Sarah took the stairs; she needed the time. By the top her hands had stopped trembling and her face had settled into the neutral, professional expression she wore when operating in internal crisis. The corridor was empty — Saturday, and research staff did not work weekends. The lights were dimmed to half power by the motion sensors. The doors were brass-plated. An unremarkable institutional corridor.

Room 4.17. The door was open.

Not ajar. Not unlocked. Open — pushed back against the wall, the room visible in the dim light. Sarah stopped. A small office: desk, chair, bookshelf, filing cabinet; a window over the inner courtyard; Shang bronze vessels along the windowsill — ding, gui, zun, three thousand years old, sitting as casually as flowerpots.

The desk was occupied — not by a person, but by a cup of tea. Porcelain, white with a blue pattern, on a saucer at the desk’s centre. Steam rose from it in a thin curling thread.

The tea was still hot.

Arthur Pendleton was not in the room. His door open. His tea steaming. He had been here minutes ago. Perhaps seconds.

Sarah stood in the doorway. She should have called out, announced herself, followed protocol. Instead she looked at the empty office and the steaming tea and felt the hair on the back of her neck rise — the old mammalian response to something the conscious mind had not yet identified.

She stepped inside. The office smelled of Earl Grey and old books and the faint dry scent of bronze. The desk was tidy: a red Parker beside the cup, cap removed; an open report — ”Catalogue of Shang Dynasty Bronze Vessels in the British Museum Collection: A Revised Dating Analysis” — marked with marginal notes in red ink.

The handwriting was small, precise, each letter formed with the consistency of a typewriter, lines ruler-straight, pressure even. The handwriting of a man who had written a great deal for a long time.

She recognised it. Not from his modern correspondence — that had been unremarkable. From the archive. From the 1894 directory, where the entry for ”A. Pendleton, Assistant to the Keeper” had been handwritten in flowing Victorian script. The same letter formation. The same slight leftward slant. The same characteristic cross of the t — late, extending past the vertical stroke: the pen had lingered.

Sarah sat down in Arthur Pendleton’s chair. The leather creaked; the wood of the desk was still warm. She looked at the report, the notes, the red pen, the tea — still steaming, still fresh.

A hundred and thirty years. The same man. The same room. The same handwriting. The same tea.

Her phone buzzed. She ignored it. She sat in his chair, in his office, surrounded by three-thousand-year-old bronzes and a hundred and thirty years of impossible evidence, and she waited.

The tea went cold — gradually, the steam thinning, fading. She watched it as a sailor watches a barometer, because the tea was a clock. It told her how long she had been sitting. How long he had been gone. And it told her that something was wrong, because no one leaves hot tea on their desk and walks away unless they have been interrupted, and no one leaves their office door open on a Saturday unless they are expecting someone, and no one has the same face in photographs taken a hundred and one years apart.

Sarah looked up. At the window, at the courtyard, at the rooftops of Bloomsbury beyond the museum walls.

A man was standing on the roof of the building across the street.

Tweed jacket. Herringbone, frayed at the cuffs. Standing perfectly still, hands at his sides, looking directly at the window of Room 4.17. At her. His face was clear even at fifty metres — dark hair, reading glasses, the mild, patient expression of a man who had been watching and waiting and had decided the time had come.

Arthur Pendleton stood on the roof and looked at Sarah Cole, and Sarah Cole looked at Arthur Pendleton, and for a single, suspended, crystalline moment the world was very still.

Then she blinked. And he was gone.

The rooftop was empty. The fire door at its edge was closed. There was no one on the roof, no one in the courtyard, no one in the corridor outside Room 4.17. Sarah was alone. She turned from the window. The office was unchanged: the desk, the chair, the bronzes, the cold tea. She had imagined it. She had been sitting in a dead man’s chair, looking at a dead man’s handwriting, absorbing a hundred and thirty years of impossible evidence, and her mind had produced what minds produce under stress. A vision. A man on a rooftop in a tweed jacket. Not real. She was a police officer, and the photographs were a coincidence, and the handwriting was a coincidence, and the tea was just tea, and the world was rational and governed by rules she understood.

She sat back down. She looked at the desk — the red pen, the report, the teacup.

Beside the teacup, resting on the surface as if it had always been there, was a piece of paper. Folded once. She was certain it had not been there before; she had memorised the desk — the pen, the report, the tea — and the note had not been there.

She picked it up. Unfolded it. The handwriting was small, precise, with a slight leftward slant. The same handwriting as the marginal notes. The same as the 1894 directory.

The note said:

Detective Cole. We should talk. — A.P.

Sarah sat in Arthur Pendleton’s chair, in Room 4.17 of the British Museum, holding a note that had appeared from nowhere, written by a man who had occupied the same room, the same floor, the same building, for a hundred and thirty years. The tea was cold. The office was empty. The rooftop was empty. The corridor was empty.

But the note was warm.
