I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Sebastian gave the order to retreat at 9:47 PM.

He gave it from his knees, in the rubble of two residential buildings in Bloomsbury, wearing nothing but the shredded remnants of what had been, eight hours ago, a four-thousand-pound bespoke charcoal suit. His jaw was swollen. His left arm was dislocated. His dark energy system, cracked by Arthur’s two-fingered pinch on the Blood Dragon’s core, was leaking black light from a dozen fissures.

”Fall back,” he said.

Two words. The shortest order he had ever given. The most expensive.

Aldric moved first. The Marquis — four hundred and twelve years old, veteran of a dozen supernatural conflicts, a being who had killed Conclave mages with his bare hands — gathered the conscious vampires with the efficiency of a man who understood, at a cellular level, that they were no longer predators. He moved through the street, tapping shoulders, pulling survivors to their feet. He didn’t speak. He didn’t need to. Every vampire within a hundred meters had felt Sebastian’s fear through the blood bond, and fear, it turned out, was the most contagious force in the supernatural world.

Victoria — the female Marquis — collected the Barons. The ten who had been struck by the Palm Thunder were still unconscious, smoking faintly. She loaded them onto the shoulders of the Vampires who could still walk, distributing the weight with the practical brutality of someone who knew that leaving Barons behind was not an option. The Crimson Court could not afford to leave its officers in the hands of... whatever he was.

The retreat was not orderly. It was not dignified. It was the careful, shuffling withdrawal of an army that had been broken — not just defeated, but broken, in the way that a bone is broken, the way that a belief is broken, the way that a world is broken when you discover that the thing you feared most is not the monster under the bed but the man sitting on top of it, drinking tea.

Sebastian stood last. Aldric tried to help him — offered a shoulder, a hand — and the Duke shrugged him off. He stood on his own power, because an eight-hundred-year-old Duke of the Crimson Court did not lean on subordinates. Not in front of the enemy. Not in front of anyone.

He looked up at the roof.

Arthur Pendelton was reading.

The man — the thing, the entity, whatever he was — was sitting on the parapet of his townhouse, in his tweed jacket and his 1890s tie, with a cup of tea on the ledge beside him and a book in his hands. The Azure Lotus Sword, that impossible weapon that had moved faster than sight, was nowhere visible. Arthur’s divine sense — that oppressive, suffocating awareness that had covered the entire battle like a blanket — had withdrawn. Pulled back, like a searchlight switching off.

He was just a man reading a book.

Sebastian’s hands shook. He looked at them — at his own hands, the hands that had torn throats and crushed skulls and held the Crimson Court in his grip for six centuries — and they were shaking. Not from cold. Not from pain. From the echo of a sensation he had not felt in four hundred years, since the night his sire had turned him, since the night he had stopped being prey and become predator.

The sensation of being small.

”Move out,” Sebastian said. His voice was hoarse, broken, barely recognizable as the voice that had commanded the Court for centuries. ”All units. Return to the Undercity. No one leaves. No one hunts. No one speaks of this until I say otherwise.”

The vampires of the London Crimson Court — those who could walk, those who could be carried, those who could crawl — withdrew from Bloomsbury.

They had arrived as fifty.

They left as nineteen.

Arthur turned a page.

He had reached the second proposal scene — the one he’d been looking forward to, the one where Darcy and Elizabeth finally, properly, found each other. It was, he thought, better written than the first. The emotional beats were more controlled. The dialogue had a lived-in quality that suggested Austen had revised it several times, polishing each exchange until it carried exactly the right weight.

He read. He sipped his tea. He listened to the vampires retreat, their fading footsteps tracked by his divine sense until the last one — Aldric, bringing up the rear, carrying a Baron on each shoulder — disappeared into the Undercity entrance two miles away.

Then he was alone.

The street was quiet. The damage was considerable — craters in the tarmac, shattered streetlights, two buildings with structural damage, a car that had been compressed into an accordion shape by a flying vampire. The Georgian door, as Arthur had feared, was beyond repair. The bookshelf inside was in pieces. The first edition of Pride and Prejudice was, he would discover later, lying face-down on the floor with a boot print on the cover. The boot print was vampire-shaped. The book was, mercifully, intact.

Arthur closed the novel — he’d finished it — and set it on the parapet. Then he closed his eyes and turned his attention inward.

His dantian — the spiritual core at the centre of his being, the reservoir of power that he had spent four centuries filling — was full. Not full the way a tank is full, with a precise line between liquid and empty. Full the way a river is full — flowing, circulating, the spiritual energy moving through his meridians in the steady, practiced rhythm of the Azure Lotus breathing technique.

He assessed his expenditure.

The battle had lasted approximately twelve minutes, from the moment he landed on the street to the moment Sebastian crawled out of the rubble. In those twelve minutes, he had:

Projected his qi barrier continuously (passive, minimal cost)

Used the Azure Lotus Sword in autonomous combat mode (moderate cost, sustained over thirty seconds)

Used qi pulses to repel vampires (minimal cost each, ten instances)

Purified one blood lance (moderate cost, involved energy conversion)

Used Palm Thunder once (significant cost, involved channeling natural law)

Caught a Blood Dragon’s core with two fingers (moderate cost, sustained contact)

Backhanded a Duke through two buildings (minimal cost — mostly physical force, augmented by qi)

Total spiritual energy expenditure: 0.7%.

Less than one percent.

Arthur opened his eyes. The stars were still clear — clearer than usual, in fact, because the supernatural activity in the area had driven every dark-energy creature away. He could see Orion, and the Pleiades, and the faint smudge of Andromeda, which he had first observed through a telescope in 1612, when Galileo’s observations were still circulating through European scholarly circles.

He considered the number. 0.7%. In the cultivation world, where battles between Soul Formation cultivators could last for days and reshape mountain ranges, 0.7% was not a battle. It was a warm-up. A stretching exercise. The kind of exertion a master might use to demonstrate basic techniques to a new student.

But.

Arthur frowned.

The frown was not about the battle. The battle had gone exactly as expected — overwhelming, absolute, the natural consequence of a realm boundary gap between a Soul Formation cultivator and beings who topped out at the Nascent Soul equivalent. He had not been in danger for a single moment. He had not been challenged. He had not needed to use more than a fraction of his power.

The frown was about recovery.

His spiritual energy expenditure was 0.7%. In the cultivation world, with abundant spiritual energy in the air, he would have recovered that 0.7% in minutes. The ambient spiritual energy would flow into his meridians, replenishing his dantian naturally, the way a river replenishes a lake connected to it.

Here, in modern London, there was no river.

Arthur reached out with his divine sense. He swept the area — Bloomsbury, Holborn, the City, Westminster, the Thames. He scanned for spiritual energy, for the ambient lingqi that saturated the air in the cultivation world. He searched for ley lines, for spirit veins, for any geological or metaphysical feature that might serve as a source of replenishment.

He found nothing.

London — all of Britain, as far as he could tell — was spiritually barren. The land had spiritual energy, but it was trapped deep underground, locked in geological formations that had been sealed for millions of years. The air was empty of lingqi. The water carried no spiritual essence. Even the stone, the ancient bedrock that had witnessed the rise and fall of Rome and the Saxons and the Normans, was inert.

Arthur was, for all practical purposes, operating on a closed system. His dantian was his only reservoir. What he spent, he could regenerate — the Azure Lotus technique allowed for self-sustained spiritual generation — but at a rate that was, by cultivation world standards, glacial. A full recovery from 0.7% expenditure would take approximately six hours.

In the cultivation world: six minutes.

That was the problem.

Not today’s battle. Not the next battle, or the one after that. The problem was strategic. Arthur was a Soul Formation cultivator living in a world without spiritual energy. Every technique he used, every battle he fought, every act of power that he performed — even something as trivial as keeping his tea warm with the Azure Lotus breathing technique — drew from a finite, slowly-replenishing pool.

If someone — Sebastian, the Conclave, whoever came next — decided to wage a war of attrition, Arthur would eventually face a choice: fight and deplete, or conserve and retreat.

He didn’t like either option.

I need a spirit vein, Arthur thought. A natural source of spiritual energy. A place where the earth’s spiritual essence is close to the surface, accessible, replenishable.

In China, spirit veins were common — the mountain ranges were riddled with them, the result of geological formations that had been cultivated and enhanced by ten thousand years of cultivation history. Every major sect had one. Every significant cultivator had access to one.

In Britain, as far as Arthur could determine, there were none. The land was dead, spiritually. It had been dead for millennia — possibly since the last ice age, possibly longer. Whatever spiritual energy had once existed had drained away or been sealed underground, leaving the surface as barren as a desert.

Or, Arthur thought, almost barren.

His divine sense, sweeping outward, had found something. Not a spirit vein — not exactly. But something. A trace. A whisper. A faint, almost imperceptible current of spiritual energy, deep underground, flowing south from...

He frowned. Concentrated. Extended his divine sense to its maximum range.

The trace originated in the northwest. The Lake District. The mountains there — Scafell, Helvellyn, the ancient Caledonian granite that predated most of the island’s geology — contained something. A reservoir, perhaps. A sealed vein, buried so deep that no human technology could reach it, but close enough to the surface that a Soul Formation cultivator’s divine sense could detect it.

It was faint. It was far away. It might be nothing — a trace, a residue, a ghost of a spirit vein that had died centuries ago.

But it might be something.

Arthur filed the information away. He would investigate. Not tonight — tonight was for tea and literature and the quiet satisfaction of a battle won. But soon. The spirit vein question had just moved from ”academic curiosity” to ”strategic priority.”

He picked up his teacup. It was, finally, cooling. He channeled a thread of spiritual energy through the Azure Lotus technique, warming it gently. The tea returned to perfect temperature.

He looked out over London. The city spread below him, a grid of light and shadow, oblivious to the supernatural war that had been fought and won on its quiet Bloomsbury street. Somewhere, a siren wailed — police, or ambulance, or fire brigade, responding to the structural damage that two punched-through buildings would inevitably generate. Somewhere else, a night bus rumbled along its route, carrying mortals home from late shifts and late nights.

And somewhere beneath the city, nineteen surviving vampires were retreating into the Undercity, carrying their wounded, led by a Duke who had just learned what it felt like to be small.

Arthur took a sip of tea.

”Good book,” he said to no one. ”Good tea. Adequate evening.”

He paused. Considered.

”Adequate” wasn’t quite right. The evening had been, by his standards, quite eventful. He had fought a battle, demonstrated three cultivation techniques, made a Duke kneel, and discovered a potential spirit vein. That was more than most evenings.

But the book had been interrupted twice — first by the siege, then by Sebastian’s unfortunate decision to reabsorb his Blood Dragon — and Arthur did not like having his reading interrupted. That, more than anything, was what he would remember about tonight. Not the power, not the dominance, not the satisfying crack of a Palm Thunder discharge. The interruption.

He would need to have words with Sebastian about that. Later. After the Duke had time to process his defeat, to report to his Court, to understand that the gap between them was not a challenge to be overcome but a fact to be accepted.

Arthur had time. He had, by his estimation, approximately fifteen hundred years of natural lifespan remaining. He could be patient.

He picked up Pride and Prejudice, turned to the last page, and re-read the final paragraph. Elizabeth and Darcy, together. The Pemberley estate. Happiness, complicated by the usual human frictions but fundamentally secure.

A good ending, Arthur thought.

He wondered what his own ending would look like.

Three miles away, in a flat above a chip shop in Camden, Detective Sergeant Sarah Cole was reviewing crime scene photographs when her phone buzzed.

She answered without looking at the caller. ”Cole.”

”Sarah.” The voice belonged to Detective Inspector Hargreaves, her superior. He sounded tired. ”We’ve got a strange one. Bloomsbury. Structural damage to two residential buildings, reports of an explosion, but no fire, no gas leak, no explosives residue.”

Sarah looked at the photographs on her desk. Three dead bodies, found along the Thames in the past week. All exsanguinated. All with neck wounds. All found within a one-mile radius of the Crimson Club — Sebastian Ashworth’s establishment, though Sarah didn’t know that name yet.

She was starting to see a pattern. She didn’t like the pattern.

”I’m on my way,” she said.

She grabbed her coat. As she left, she glanced at the map on her wall — the one with the red pins marking the Thames victims, and the blue pin marking the Crimson Club.

The blue pin and the new incident in Bloomsbury were four hundred meters apart.

Sarah added a new pin to her map. Yellow, this time. For ”unexplained.”

The map was getting crowded.
