I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

They came at eight-seventeen. Arthur knew the exact time because he had just reached the part in Pride and Prejudice where Mr. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth for the first time, and Elizabeth — who, Arthur felt, was being somewhat unreasonable — had just refused him. He had been looking forward to the second proposal, which was better written, when his divine sense (shenshi — the cultivated perception that allowed a practitioner to extend awareness far beyond the five mortal senses) registered the first wave of vampires entering Bloomsbury. Fifty signatures. Moving in formation. He bookmarked the page, set the book on the arm of his chair, and stood. Through the window, the street looked ordinary. A few parked cars. A woman walking a dog. The distant glow of a bus stop. But beneath the visible surface, Arthur’s divine sense mapped the approaching force with the clarity of a military radar display. They came from three directions. The main force — thirty Vampire-class, led by five Barons — approached from the south, moving through the back gardens of the terraced houses. A flanking group of ten Vampires and three Barons came from the east, through the alley behind the pub. And the rear guard — two Marquis and two Barons, the elite strike team — circled north to cut off any retreat. It was, Arthur conceded, a competent tactical deployment. The three-pronged approach would trap a normal target. The flanking groups would prevent escape. The Marquis reserve would deliver the killing blow. Richard led the southern column personally. He had planned the approach with the care of a general who had been making war since before Napoleon was born — which, in fact, he had. The Baron had been at Waterloo. Not on either side; he had simply been there, feeding on the wounded in the aftermath. But he had observed the infantry tactics, and they had stayed with him. The column moved in five-man cells, each separated by thirty meters, communicating through the blood-link — the telepathic network that connected every Crimson Court vampire to his sire. They advanced through back gardens, vaulting fences without sound, their feet touching grass and stone with the delicacy of cats. They had rehearsed the approach twice in the Undercity’s empty tunnels until every vampire knew his position and his assigned sector. Richard was confident. He had reviewed the intelligence himself: a single target, no allies, no wards, no defensive formations of any kind. A man who sat in a flat and read books and went to work at a museum. Fifty vampires for one human researcher was, in Richard’s professional assessment, grotesque overkill. The Duke was being paranoid. He would learn otherwise. It would have worked beautifully against a werewolf pack, a rival vampire coven, or even a small group of Conclave mages. Against a Soul Formation (Huashen) cultivator, it had one fundamental flaw. It assumed he would run. Arthur picked up his teacup — still warm, thanks to the Azure Lotus breathing technique, which circulated qi through his meridians and, as a minor side effect, maintained the temperature of liquids in his immediate vicinity — and carried it to the roof. The roof of his townhouse was a flat square of lead flashing, bordered by a low parapet. From here, he could see three streets in each direction, the rooftops of Bloomsbury stretching away like a chessboard, and the distant glow of the city centre. The March air was cold and damp. A few stars were visible through the light pollution. Arthur sat on the parapet, legs crossed, teacup balanced on his knee, and waited. He could, he reflected, have finished the chapter. The second proposal scene was only forty pages away. Mr. Darcy would try again, and this time Elizabeth would accept him, and the novel would end happily, as novels ought to. Instead, he was sitting on a roof in March, watching fifty vampires creep through back gardens, and his tea was going to cool if he didn’t drink it soon. Some evenings, Arthur thought, did not go according to plan. The first vampires arrived at eight-nineteen. They didn’t see him immediately — they were focused on the building, scanning the windows for movement. Arthur watched them through his divine sense: five shapes moving through the back gardens, soundless, invisible to any mortal eye, their inverted energy signatures burning like cold flames in his perception. They entered the building through the ground-floor window. Arthur felt them move through the rooms below — kitchen, living room, hallway — checking each one with the methodical thoroughness of a search team that had done this many times before. They moved in pairs, covering each other’s blind spots, clearing corners with practiced efficiency. They found nothing. Not a trace of the target. The flat was dark, the reading chair vacant, a book splayed open on its arm. Arthur was on the roof, and his flat was on the second floor, and they hadn’t reached it yet. Richard’s blood-link pulse carried the first note of uncertainty. Ground floor clear. No sign. Proceeding upstairs. The second wave arrived at eight-twenty. Ten Vampires, three Barons, entering from the alley. They went in through the back door — which was locked, but vampire strength made locks a formality. The door splintered inward. Arthur heard it from the roof and winced slightly. That door had been original Georgian. Two hundred and forty years old. He would have to replace it. By eight-twenty-two, the building was surrounded. Thirty-eight Vampires inside or approaching, ten Barons coordinating from the street, and two Marquis holding back — waiting, Arthur assumed, for the signal to commit. Arthur sipped his tea. It was still perfect. The Barons entered his flat at eight-twenty-three. He felt them move through his living room, his study, his bedroom. He felt one of them pick up Pride and Prejudice — first edition, 1813, three volumes, worth approximately forty thousand pounds at auction — and throw it aside. The spine hit the wall with a crack. He had purchased it from a bookseller on Pall Mall in 1814, for three pounds and six shillings. It had survived two world wars and two centuries of careful handling. It had not survived a Baron of the Crimson Court. He felt another tear his bookshelf out of the wall, looking for hidden compartments. The bookshelf had been custom-built. 1887. Georgian mahogany, crafted by a cabinetmaker in Spitalfields whose other work now sat in the Victoria and Albert Museum. A third Baron entered his study and began pulling drawers from his desk — a partner’s desk, circa 1820, English oak, with leather-inlaid writing surfaces. The Baron hurled the drawers across the room. Papers scattered — correspondence, research notes, drafts of articles for the Journal of Near Eastern Archaeology. Years of careful scholarship, strewn across the floor by hands that had never written anything more complex than a death threat. Then one of them found the wardrobe. Not the wardrobe with the Compass and his formation supplies — that wardrobe was warded, invisible to anyone below the Soul Formation level. The other wardrobe. The one with his clothes. The Baron pulled the doors open, examined the contents, and, finding nothing of tactical value, tore the wardrobe apart. The doors came off their hinges. The internal shelving splintered. His spare tie collection — seven ties, each at least fifty years old — fell to the floor in a heap of ruined silk. Arthur’s eye twitched. The bookshelf. The first edition. The partner’s desk. The wardrobe. Seven ties. Something was accumulating behind his mild expression. It was not anger, exactly — anger was too hot a word for what Arthur felt. It was closer to the feeling one gets when a colleague spills coffee on a manuscript: a cold, precise, cataloguing irritation that noted every damaged item, assigned each a replacement value, and added the total to a ledger that would, eventually, be settled. They’re damaging my property, he thought. The lead Baron — Richard, the same one who had visited the museum — sent a signal. Arthur felt it: a pulse of inverted energy, transmitted through the vampire network like a radio signal. Target not found. Check the roof. Arthur heard footsteps on the stairs. Heavy, fast, multiple. Then the trapdoor to the roof burst open, and three Vampires poured onto the lead flashing. They saw him. Arthur Pendelton, sitting on the parapet, in his tweed jacket and his 1890s tie, with a cup of Earl Grey balanced on his knee, looking at them with the mild expression of a man whose reading has been interrupted. ”Good evening,” he said. The three Vampires stopped. They had been moving at combat speed — twenty meters per second, claws extended, jaws unhinged. They stopped the way a car stops when a wall appears in the road. Abruptly. With a slight skid. For a long moment, nobody moved. The three Vampires stared at Arthur. Arthur regarded them over the rim of his teacup. The situation had a certain social awkwardness to it — the kind that occurs when unexpected guests arrive and find the host engaged in something private. Except the guests had claws and the private activity was reading Jane Austen on a roof. Behind them, more Vampires climbed through the trapdoor. Then Barons. Then, from the street below, Arthur heard Richard’s voice, amplified by vampire vocal cords to carry across the rooftops: ”He’s on the roof! All units, converge!” Arthur looked at his teacup. He had approximately three sips left. He considered whether to finish it now or set it down. He set it down. There was a parapet ledge beside him, and he placed the cup on it with the careful precision of a man who intended to retrieve it later. Then he stood. Fifty vampires. On his roof, in his stairwell, in his garden, in his street. The full combat strength of the London Crimson Court’s operational force. An army that had, for six centuries, made the supernatural underworld of Britain’s capital bend its knee. Arthur Pendelton stood on the parapet of his Bloomsbury townhouse, looked down at the fifty predators who had come to kill him, and did something he had not done in four hundred years. He drew his sword. The Azure Lotus Sword (Qinglian Jian) cleared its jade sheath with a sound like a bell struck once, very gently. The blade was white — not steel-white, but the white of moonlight, of old bone, of something that had existed before iron was invented. Formation script glowed along its length, characters from a language that predated English, Latin, and Greek by millennia. They were old when the pyramids were young. The moment the blade cleared the sheath, the three formation flags Arthur had planted the night before — one at the front door, one at the back window, one on the roof — ignited. Trap Formation: Heaven’s Net (Tianluo Zhen). A standard Kunlun defensive array. The flags blazed with pale blue light, and threads of energy stretched outward from each one like silk from a spider’s abdomen, connecting, weaving, sealing. The air around the townhouse thickened. Every vampire on the roof felt it — a sudden, crushing pressure, as if the atmosphere had tripled in density. The ones in the stairwell felt it too: a wall of force, invisible and absolute, sealing the trapdoor behind them. The ones in the street felt it last: a shimmer in the air, like a heat mirage, that enclosed the building and thirty meters of street in every direction. The Heaven’s Net was closed. Nothing below the Soul Formation level would enter or leave. The vampires didn’t know what had happened. They felt the pressure, felt the strange thickening of the air, but they had no framework to understand it. They had never encountered a formation array. They had never encountered qi used as architecture. They shifted uneasily, claws flexing, looking to their Barons for explanation. The Barons looked to Richard. Richard looked at the sword. Arthur raised the sword to vertical. The formation script blazed brighter — not reflected light, not generated light, but something else, something that seemed to radiate from inside the blade, as if the metal were a window onto a different and older set of physical laws. The air around the sword rippled, distorting the streetlights below like heat haze. The space near the blade bent. Not metaphorically. Literally. The lead flashing beneath Arthur’s feet began to warp and flow, drawn toward the point where he stood by a gravitational field that had no business existing in Bloomsbury. The vampires saw the sword and did not understand what they were looking at. They saw a man with a glowing stick. They saw a tweed-clad academic who should have been terrified and wasn’t. They saw something that didn’t fit their categories — not mage-craft, not blood-magic, not any system of power they had encountered in six centuries of existence — and for a moment, just a moment, they hesitated. ”I gave your Duke a chance,” Arthur said. His voice was quiet, conversational — the tone of a man discussing a point of academic disagreement over tea. But every vampire on the roof, in the stairwell, and in the street below heard it clearly. The sound didn’t travel through the air. It traveled through the qi that now saturated the Heaven’s Net, reaching every corner of the sealed space like water reaching every crack in a cup. ”I told him to leave me alone. He sent me a declaration of war instead.” He lowered the sword until it pointed at Richard. ”I want you to understand something before we begin.” Arthur’s voice was still calm, still measured, still carrying the faintly weary patience of a man who had explained things before and expected to explain them again. ”In the place where I come from, the gap between my level of power and yours has a specific name. We call it jingjie — a realm boundary. It means that the difference between us is not one of degree. It is one of kind.” He let that settle. ”A mage casts spells by borrowing energy from the world. A vampire draws power from blood. A werewolf channels the beast within. Every supernatural creature I have encountered in this country operates within the same framework. You take power from somewhere else. You are conduits.” Arthur turned the sword slowly. The formation script caught the distorted light and threw it back in patterns that hurt to look at. ”I do not borrow. I do not channel. I do not take. I generate. The power I wield comes from within — refined over centuries, compressed through stages of cultivation that your traditions have no equivalent for. The weakest cultivator at my level could extinguish every vampire in London without raising his heart rate. I have been at this level for four hundred years.” He paused. The rooftop was silent. Fifty vampires stood motionless, caught between the instinct to attack and the instinct to flee, and finding that neither instinct offered a clear path forward. ”You are not here to fight me,” Arthur said. ”You are here to learn a lesson. I regret that it will be an expensive one.” Richard’s face had gone very still. Two centuries of survival had given him a keen instinct for threats, and every instinct was screaming. ”Retreat,” he said through the blood-link. All units, fall back. Now. The vampires turned toward the exits. None of them moved more than three steps. The Heaven’s Net held — every vampire who reached the edge met a wall of compressed qi that was, to their inverted energy systems, the equivalent of a mortal trying to walk through granite. They pushed. It didn’t yield. Arthur watched them with the mild interest of a naturalist observing beetles bump against glass. ”Nowhere to go,” he said. He stepped off the parapet. The qi in the Heaven’s Net shifted. Every vampire felt it — a change in pressure, a gravitational pull toward the point where Arthur had been standing, as if reality itself were bending to accommodate his descent. The streetlights below flickered and died. Car alarms triggered in a wave radiating outward from the building, one after another, like dominoes falling. Fifty vampires braced for combat. Arthur descended.
