I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The descent took forty minutes, through air that smelled of stone and old blood.

They entered through the maintenance hatch in the Egyptian gallery — the one Marcus had used, the one Sarah Cole had walked past a hundred times. Below the hatch, a ladder; below the ladder, a tunnel; below the tunnel, the Undercity. Arthur had been here before — walking its corridors when he fought Sebastian’s fifty vampires, descending to the deep chamber to reinforce the seal, meeting Marcus in the Hall of Red Marbled Stone. But he had never entered through the Court’s formal passage, and never descended with a Prince.

Marcus led, moving with the unhurried certainty of a being who had walked these paths for two thousand years — who had carved some of them himself. His dark energy radiated outward in a subtle, controlled wave that pushed the shadows back and made the tunnel walls gleam faint crimson. Court vampires lined the passage at ten-metre intervals, pressed against the walls in absolute stillness, watching Marcus pass with the fixed attention of beings in the presence of something ancient and absolute. None looked at Arthur.

Behind Arthur came Thomas Greene, maps in hand, navigating with the knowledge of a vampire who had spent four centuries learning every passage. And behind Thomas, flanked by two of Marcus’s personal guard, came Sebastian — hands bound behind his back with Conclave-grade dark-iron chains, his energy system suppressed, throttled to a fraction. He could channel dark energy when commanded. He could not use it to resist. He had not spoken since they left the Hall; the crusted dark-blood tracks on his cheeks were evidence of a breakdown he would never acknowledge.

Marcus had explained the arrangement in three sentences: ”Sebastian weakened the seal. Sebastian will help repair it. His dark energy is needed; his volition is not.”

Arthur had nodded. An elegantly practical approach to justice, he reflected — the punishment fitting the crime with a neatness that would have satisfied a Confucian magistrate.

They descended through the Court levels, past the Hall, past the storage chambers, past tunnels that predated the Undercity’s construction. The architecture degraded from worked stone to rough-hewn rock to natural formations older than anything human. The temperature dropped; the air grew dense and mineral. The lingqi from the Lake District vein flowed here, an invisible current Arthur felt with every fibre of his divine sense, feeding the formation that held the world together. And beneath the lingqi, far below, the Remnant. Patient. Vast. Waiting.

They reached the Blood Coffin chamber at the sixty-metre depth.

It was not what Arthur had expected. Not a gothic crypt — a natural cavern, roughly circular, twenty metres across, its walls crystallised dark essence: dark energy in solid form, accumulated over centuries of Marcus’s torpor, layered on the limestone like mineral deposits. Deep red, almost black, pulsing with a slow rhythm that matched Marcus’s heartbeat — or rather, his heartbeat matched them. An externalised organ, Arthur realised. A supplementary body.

In the centre stood the Blood Coffin itself. Not a coffin in any conventional sense — a formation, a three-dimensional array of dark energy crystals arranged in a pattern Arthur’s cultivation-trained eye could read like text. Ancient. Older than Marcus. The Prince had found it when he first came to Britain and had used it as his torpor chamber, sleeping for four centuries while his dark energy slowly fed the formation.

”The Blood Coffin,” Marcus said, ”is not merely my resting place. It is a seal.”

Arthur traced the energy flows, mapped the crystal lattice, and understood. ”You have been supplementing the Wanderer’s seal for two thousand years. Your dark energy, channelled through this formation, reinforcing it from above. A second layer.”

”The Wanderer’s seal is lingqi-based. I am dark energy. The systems do not interact — but both apply pressure to the same target. His pushes down; mine pushes down. Together, they hold.”

”And when you woke from torpor—”

”I stopped feeding the formation. It has been degrading ever since. Slowly, steadily.” Marcus’s voice carried no emotion, no guilt — only the cold admission of a being who had done the maths and accepted the result. ”My waking weakened the seal. Sebastian’s interference weakened it further. I have simply accelerated the timeline.”

Arthur studied the formation — not cultivation-level sophistication, but close. Marcus was not a cultivator, but he was ancient, powerful, and had spent millennia mastering his own energy. His understanding of dark energy was, in its own way, as deep as Arthur’s understanding of lingqi.

”The chamber is directly above the entity.”

”The Wanderer placed his seal at three hundred and twelve metres. My chamber is at sixty. Between us, two hundred and fifty metres of clay, chalk, and sandstone, threaded with his lingqi conduits — connecting the spirit vein to the seal. My formation connects to the same geological column, pressing from above.”

”Then the reinforcement goes here — the junction between your dark energy infrastructure and the Wanderer’s conduits.”

”Yes.” Marcus looked at him. ”Can it be done?”

Arthur was already designing. The dual-energy concept was sound in theory: lingqi and dark energy could not merge, but they could interlock. The key was the interface — the points where two incompatible systems were forced to cooperate by the structure itself. He needed seven anchor points: three lingqi, three dark energy, and one central node where the systems would meet. The lingqi anchors would draw from the Wanderer’s conduits; the dark energy anchors from the Blood Coffin formation; and the central node would be his dantian — his living core, the bridge between two incompatible systems.

”I need Sebastian,” Arthur said.

The Duke looked up, contempt and rage on his face — and beneath it, fear. He had felt the Remnant during his descent. He had heard it speak. He knew what was down there.

”Your dark energy is needed for three anchors. Marcus alone cannot power them — his energy is tied to this formation, and diverting too much would destabilise the existing seal. You will provide the supplementary power.”

Sebastian’s jaw worked. ”You want me to fuel the seal I tried to break.”

”I want you to fix what you damaged. The alternative is to remain in chains while the Remnant eats the Undercity. Your call.”

Marcus’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. ”You will do as the cultivator asks, Sebastian. This is not a request.”

Sebastian looked at the Prince who had stripped his authority, revoked his title, reduced him from Duke to prisoner. The hatred in his eyes was pure and absolute, a thing with weight and texture.

But he nodded.

”Good,” Arthur said, and knelt on the chamber floor to draw.

The formation took ninety minutes to inscribe.

Arthur worked with his finger, etching lines into the crystallised dark essence of the floor. They glowed where his lingqi touched — jade-white against deep red, two colours that should never have coexisted in one space. A seven-pointed star: three points in lingqi script, three in dark energy script (etched by Marcus and Sebastian themselves, glowing deep crimson), and at the centre, a small precise ring drawn last — the interface node, where his dantian would sit and his body would be the bridge.

”Begin,” Arthur said.

He sat at the centre, cross-legged, and opened his dantian. Lingqi flowed from the Lake District vein through the geological conduits, through the three anchors, into his core — a river of spiritual power that filled his meridians and blazed. He shaped it, refined it, directed it outward through the central node. Simultaneously, Marcus channelled dark energy from the Blood Coffin formation through the crimson lines; and Sebastian, bound and throttled and furious, contributed his own — smaller, rawer, less controlled, but necessary, because Marcus alone could not power three anchors without destabilising the existing seal.

The two energy systems met at Arthur’s dantian.

Like holding two live wires, one in each hand, forcing the currents to run the same way. They repelled each other. They fought, screaming against the inscribed lines, straining to tear free, to annihilate each other.

Arthur held them.

His dantian burned — not with heat but with tension. The two energies pressed through his body, his meridians, his spiritual core; his cultivation base — Soul Formation, the fifth stage of the Azure Lotus lineage, four hundred years of refinement — held them apart and forced them into the interlocking pattern the formation prescribed. Sweat beaded on his forehead. His hands trembled on his knees. His breathing held to the Azure Lotus fourth variation, designed for sustained channelling — and even that discipline strained against the forces flowing through him.

The Remnant noticed.

Not sound, not language — a pressure against his divine sense. Three hundred metres below, it felt the new energy entering the seal and turned its attention upward. Arthur felt it like standing beneath a searchlight that was also a microscope, examining the new formation the way a surgeon examines an X-ray.

Then the visions came.

Not hallucinations — memories. The Remnant’s memories: fragments of the world that had existed before this one. Cities of impossible geometry, built from materials with no names in any living language. Beings neither alive nor dead but existing in a way that made the current definition of existence seem a child’s approximation. Energy — dense, ancient, flowing through everything, connecting everything. And the end: the slow, inevitable collapse of a universe that had run its course, and in the final moments, a fragment of that ancient energy — dense, concentrated, unwilling to dissolve — preserved. Sealed in the deep earth. A fossil of a dead world.

A Remnant.

Arthur’s dantian screamed. The formation shrieked with the strain of two incompatible systems forced to cooperate; Marcus’s dark energy pressed from one side, Arthur’s lingqi from the other, the Remnant from below — testing, probing, examining.

Arthur held. Because he was Soul Formation, because his dantian had been refined over four centuries into something that could withstand pressures that would shatter a lesser cultivator, because the Azure Lotus lineage had spent millennia perfecting the art of endurance — of being the last thing standing when everything else had fallen.

The formation stabilised. The two systems, unable to merge and unable to separate, locked into the interlocking pattern he had designed. The lingqi anchors pulsed jade-white; the dark energy anchors pulsed crimson; the central node — his dantian — blazed with a light that was both colours and neither, shimmering at the boundary between two worlds.

The crack narrowed. Arthur felt it through his divine sense: the breach Sebastian had torn, the Remnant had widened, that his first reinforcement had only partially closed — shrinking millimetre by millimetre under the combined pressure. The Remnant’s whispers faded. The visions stopped. The pressure on his sense eased — retreated, not vanished.

Arthur opened his eyes. Marcus stood at the edge of the formation, his face pale nearly to translucence. Sebastian knelt where he had been stationed, eyes wide and unfocused — he had felt the visions too. He had seen the dead world.

”Did it hold?” Marcus asked, his voice carrying a tightness Arthur had never heard. The Prince was afraid — not of Arthur, not of the formation. Of what was below.

”The crack has narrowed. The dual-energy layer is stable. The seal is stronger than it was.” Arthur paused. ”But it is not closed. The Remnant is still there, still pressing. The new layer will slow it, but—”

He stopped. His divine sense, still extended through the formation, still touching the entity below, felt something that made the blood drain from his face.

The Remnant’s attention had shifted. It was no longer pressing against the seal, no longer trying to break free. It was doing something else — something Arthur recognised, because it was something he did.

The Remnant was studying the new formation.

Not attacking it. Not resisting it. Studying — tracing the energy flows, mapping the anchor points, analysing the interface between lingqi and dark energy, finding the seams, the joints, the inevitable imperfections where two incompatible energies had been forced to cooperate.

It was learning.

Arthur stood, legs unsteady — but his mind was clear, the clarity that comes from understanding something terrible.

”Arthur?” Marcus said. ”What is it?”

Arthur looked at the Prince — at the ancient being who had seen civilisations rise and fall, who had fled from the Western Wanderer and spent twenty centuries in the dark.

”They haven’t trapped it,” Arthur said, working the logic aloud. ”It’s not angry. It’s not afraid. It’s curious. It’s examining the new seal the way I examined the Wanderer’s original formation — looking for the design principles, the structural logic, the weaknesses.”

He looked down at the formation beneath his feet, at the three hundred metres of rock between him and something that had survived the death of a universe and was now, methodically and patiently, learning how to undo his work.

”We haven’t trapped it,” Arthur said. ”We’ve given it a new puzzle to solve.”

And it would not give him time to solve it first.
