I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Sebastian did not want tea.

Arthur could tell because the Duke’s response was not verbal. It was kinetic. One moment, Sebastian stood at the end of the street, seventy meters away, his charcoal suit immaculate, his crimson eyes measuring. The next moment, he was in front of Arthur, having crossed the distance in a single step that compressed seventy meters of London pavement into a blink.

It was, Arthur conceded, genuinely fast. Not by cultivation standards — a Foundation Establishment cultivator with a decent movement technique could cover the same distance in a tenth of the time — but by the standards of the Western supernatural world, it was extraordinary. Sebastian had spent eight centuries refining his speed. He had pushed the vampire body to its absolute limit. He had, Arthur estimated, reached approximately 0.3 times the speed of sound.

Arthur had been reading a book when the attack started. He had set the book down. He had time to think about the book while the Duke closed the distance.

Sebastian’s right hand was open, fingers hooked, dark energy concentrated at the fingertips like five black needles. The strike was aimed at Arthur’s chest — not at the heart, Arthur noted, but at the sternum. A disabling strike, not a killing one. The Duke wanted him alive. Wanted to study him, interrogate him, understand what he was.

How very civilized.

Arthur didn’t dodge. He didn’t block. He stood still and let the strike land.

Sebastian’s fingers hit his chest. The dark energy discharged — five lances of compressed blood-magic, each one carrying enough force to punch through a steel door. The impact made a sound like a bell struck with a hammer.

Arthur’s jacket didn’t tear. His sternum didn’t crack. His qi barrier — passive, automatic, requiring no conscious thought — had absorbed the strike the way a pond absorbs a thrown stone. The dark energy dispersed across the barrier’s surface and dissipated, leaving nothing but a faint warmth on Arthur’s chest. He hadn’t shifted his weight. Hadn’t blinked. The book he’d been reading was still open on the ledge behind him, its pages undisturbed, as if the attack had been nothing more than a draft.

Sebastian’s hand was still against his chest. The Duke’s fingers were pressing, pushing, trying to find a gap in the barrier that didn’t exist. His crimson eyes, so close now that Arthur could see the individual blood vessels that fed them, widened with something that wasn’t quite fear. Not yet. It was confusion — the confusion of a predator whose claws have always worked, always, against every prey, suddenly meeting a surface they cannot scratch.

”You hit hard,” Arthur said. ”For your level.”

Sebastian withdrew. He moved back three meters — not a retreat, a repositioning — and his expression hardened into something colder, harder, more controlled. The confusion was gone, filed away, replaced by the calculating stillness of a being who had survived eight centuries by knowing when to stop probing and start committing.

”Blood Dragon,” Sebastian said.

He said it the way a swordsman might name his finishing move — not as a battle cry, not as a boast, but as an announcement. A declaration that the next thing to happen would be the most powerful thing he was capable of, and that the target should be grateful for the warning.

His body changed. Not visibly — Sebastian didn’t transform, didn’t grow claws or wings or fangs. The change was internal, structural, energetic. His inverted energy system, which had been operating at what Arthur estimated as 40% capacity during the initial strike, opened fully. All of it. Every reserve, every stored cache of dark essence, every drop of blood-energy accumulated over eight hundred and twelve years of existence.

It poured out of him.

The blood left his body through every pore — not as liquid, not as the crystallized ribbons the Marquis had used, but as raw essence. Dark light, thick and heavy, pooling around him like fog, rising, taking shape. The shape was unmistakable: a dragon. A Western dragon, not the serpentine long of Chinese mythology — this was the wyrm of European legend, with massive wings, a barbed tail, a head the size of a car, and eyes that burned crimson.

It was beautiful, in a terrible way. The blood dragon coalesced from the fog of dark essence, its body twenty meters long, its wingspan wider than the street. The scales were crystallized blood — each one a facet of Sebastian’s accumulated power, eight centuries of predatory existence compressed into armour. The wings were vast membranes of dark energy, veined with pulsing crimson light like a living circulatory system stretched across the sky. Each scale was a perfect hexagon, overlapping in precise rows, catching the streetlight and reflecting it in shades of garnet and obsidian. The claws were bone-white, the teeth were black, and the breath that issued from its throat was dark mist that corroded the tarmac beneath it.

The streetlamps within twenty meters shattered. The parked cars’ alarms screamed in unison, then died as the dark energy field disrupted their electronics. Windows cracked. A tree at the end of the street withered, its leaves turning black and falling in a single breath.

Sebastian stood beneath the dragon’s neck, his hand raised, controlling it. His face was pale — paler than a vampire’s face should be, which meant he was spending something he couldn’t easily replace. The Blood Dragon was not a technique to be used lightly. It was his ultimate expression of power, the culmination of eight centuries of refinement, the weapon he had forged for the day he might need to fight another Duke, or a Prince, or a particularly troublesome werewolf Primordial.

He had never used it against anything less.

The dragon roared. The sound was not vocal — it was energetic, a pulse of dark force that hit Arthur like a physical wall. The air pressure alone would have killed a mortal. It pushed Arthur’s hair back, ruffled his jacket, and made the Azure Lotus Sword beside him vibrate in sympathetic resonance.

Arthur looked up at the blood dragon.

He tilted his head. His divine sense examined it — the structure, the energy density, the relationship between Sebastian’s will and the construct’s form. It was, he decided, genuinely impressive work. The blood dragon was not simply a weapon. It was an extension of Sebastian himself, a projection of his consciousness into a separate body. The dragon could think. It could react. It could adapt to an opponent’s movements in real time, because it was Sebastian, in the same way that a Nascent Soul cultivator’s yuanying was the cultivator.

For a Duke-level vampire, this was the peak. The absolute ceiling of what the Western supernatural world could produce at that tier. There was nothing above this — no Blood Phoenix, no Blood God, no secret technique that would suddenly multiply Sebastian’s power tenfold. The Blood Dragon was it. The final word.

Arthur raised his right hand. Two fingers. Index and middle, held together.

He stepped forward.

The dragon lunged. Its jaws opened wide enough to swallow a van, its teeth aimed at Arthur’s torso, its dark breath preceding it like a corrosive wind. The attack was fast — faster than anything else tonight, faster than the Barons, faster than the Marquis’s blood lance. The dragon’s strike crossed the distance between them in a quarter of the time it had taken Sebastian’s initial charge.

Arthur reached into the dragon’s open mouth.

His two fingers — index and middle, held together like chopsticks — entered the dragon’s maw, passed its teeth, passed its throat, and found the core. The dragon’s core was a sphere of compressed blood-essence at the centre of its chest, the place where Sebastian’s will was densest, the beating heart of the construct. Arthur’s fingers found it the way a hand finds a light switch in a dark room — with the casual certainty of someone who has done this many, many times.

He pinched it.

The dragon stopped. Its jaws, which had been closing around Arthur’s arm, froze. Its wings, which had been beating, stilled. Its tail, mid-swing, hung motionless. The entire construct — twenty meters of crystallized blood, eight centuries of accumulated power — went rigid, locked in place by two fingers pressing against its core.

Sebastian, standing below, went white.

Not vampire-pale. White. The colour drained from his face as if someone had pulled a plug. He could feel it — feel Arthur’s fingers inside his dragon, feel the pressure against the core, feel the casualness of it. Two fingers. Not a technique. Not a spell. Not a desperate, straining counter. Two fingers, the way one might pick up a grape. Eight hundred years of power, and it was being held — not defeated, not outmatched, simply held — by two fingers. The disparity was not a gap. It was an abyss, and Sebastian was staring into it.

The dragon’s core, that sphere of compressed blood-essence, was trying to push back. Dark energy surged through the construct, trying to break free, trying to overwhelm whatever force was holding it. The dark light blazed brighter. The dragon’s eyes flared crimson. Sebastian poured more power in — everything he had left, every reserve, every stored drop.

Arthur’s fingers didn’t move.

The dark energy hit his fingertips and dispersed. Like water hitting a cliff. Like a wave hitting the moon. The force had nowhere to go, no leverage to find, no weakness to exploit. Arthur’s spiritual power was not fighting the blood dragon. It was simply being there, and the blood dragon was learning, with the slow horror of a realization dawning, that it was not strong enough to move a mountain by pushing against it.

Arthur looked at Sebastian over the frozen dragon’s back. The Duke was fifty meters away, his hand still raised, his face white, his body trembling — not with fear, not yet, but with the strain of pushing everything he had against an immovable object.

”In the cultivation world,” Arthur said, his voice calm, conversational, carrying easily across the silent street, ”a creature like this — a construct animated by the creator’s will — is called a fenshen. A division of the self. We have them at the Nascent Soul stage, though they’re more refined. At the Soul Formation stage, we don’t need them.”

He paused. Let that sink in.

”At the Soul Formation stage, the self is sufficient.”

Sebastian’s hand dropped. Not voluntarily — his body simply stopped being able to maintain the effort. The blood dragon, its power source cut, flickered. Its scales lost their lustre. Its eyes dimmed. The massive wings folded.

Arthur was still holding its core between two fingers.

”You’ve spent eight hundred years building this,” Arthur said. ”Eight centuries of hunting, feeding, accumulating. Every drop of blood you’ve taken, every life you’ve ended, every year of existence — it’s all here, in this dragon. This is your life’s work.”

He looked at the frozen construct. Then he looked at Sebastian.

”I’m going to show you something now,” he said. ”I want you to watch carefully. Because this is the difference between your power and mine.”

Arthur’s fingers closed.

The dragon’s core cracked.

Not shattered. Not exploded. Cracked — a single fissure running through the compressed blood-essence, spreading like ice forming on a window. The crack widened. The core split. Dark energy leaked from the fissure in tendrils of black light.

Sebastian screamed.

It was not a sound a human throat could produce. It was the scream of a being whose soul was being pulled apart — because that was exactly what was happening. The blood dragon was not a separate entity. It was Sebastian. And Arthur was breaking it.

Arthur stopped. His fingers opened. The cracked core, leaking dark energy, hung in the dragon’s chest like a broken egg.

He withdrew his hand from the dragon’s mouth, stepped back, and clasped his hands behind his back. The dragon stood frozen — alive, broken, but intact. Severely damaged but not destroyed. Sebastian’s life’s work, cracked but not shattered.

”I stopped,” Arthur said. ”Because I want you to understand something. I could have destroyed it. I could have destroyed you — the dragon is connected to your core, and breaking it completely would have broken your cultivation base. You would have survived, probably, but you would have been reduced to... what? A Baron? A Count? Eight hundred years of work, undone in a second.”

Sebastian was on his knees. He didn’t remember falling. His charcoal suit was stained with dark blood — his own, leaking from the cracks in his energy system. His crimson eyes, those marks of the Duke, had dimmed to a dull maroon.

Arthur walked toward him.

Each step was unhurried, measured, the step of a man crossing his own living room. His divine sense tracked everything — the two Marquis, frozen on the far side of the street; the ten Barons, still smoking; the forty-one Vampires, scattered and insensate. All of them were watching. All of them were feeling, through the blood-bond that connected every member of the Crimson Court, what Sebastian was feeling.

The Duke’s fear.

Arthur stopped three meters from Sebastian. Close enough to touch. Close enough that his qi field, passive and gentle as it was, pressed against the Duke’s broken energy system like a hand on a bruise.

”I gave you a chance,” Arthur said. ”I told your Baron to leave me alone. You sent fifty vampires to my home. You damaged my door — a Georgian original, two hundred and forty years old — and you threw my first edition of Pride and Prejudice across the room.”

He reached into his pocket. Sebastian flinched — actually flinched, an eight-hundred-year-old Duke flinching like a child expecting a slap. Arthur pulled out a handkerchief. Monogrammed. AP. He offered it to Sebastian.

”You’re bleeding,” Arthur said.

Sebastian stared at the handkerchief. Then he stared at Arthur. Then, very slowly, he took it. He pressed it to the blood running from his nose, and the white linen darkened immediately. The handkerchief smelled of lapsang souchong and old paper — the scent of a man who had been reading quietly in his study minutes ago, undisturbed, while fifty vampires came to kill him. The courtesy of it was worse than any blow.

Arthur turned and walked back toward his building. The Azure Lotus Sword followed, humming contentedly.

”I’ll be on the roof,” he said over his shoulder. ”When you’ve recovered enough to stand, come up. We should talk.”

He climbed the stairs of his townhouse, stepping over the debris and the unconscious vampires, and emerged onto the roof. His teacup was still on the parapet ledge. Still warm.

He picked it up, sat on the parapet, and took a sip.

Below, on the street, Sebastian Ashworth — Duke of the London Crimson Court, eight hundred and twelve years old, the most powerful vampire in Britain — knelt on the tarmac, holding a stranger’s handkerchief to his bleeding face, and tried to understand what had just happened.
