I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The throne room of the Crimson Court had not been built. It had been excavated — carved from the London clay by hands that predated the Norman Conquest, expanded and refined over six centuries into a chamber that resembled nothing so much as a Gothic cathedral turned upside down. Stone pillars rose from a floor of black marble veined with red, each pillar a single piece of stone dragged from a quarry in Caen and shipped across the Channel by vampires who had found the Norman stonemasons’ work adequate but their lifespans inconvenient. The ceiling, forty feet above, was a dome of Victorian brickwork that some long-forgotten Duke had commissioned from a builder who had not, in the end, been paid — or permitted to leave. His bones, it was rumoured, lay in the foundations, though no one had ever checked. Crimson drapes lined the walls, heavy with dust that was itself decades old, their fabric imported from a Lyon silk merchant in 1847 who had believed he was supplying a nobleman’s townhouse. He had not been precisely wrong. At the far end, on a dais of steps that curved upward like the rings of a tree, sat the throne. It was carved from a single block of English oak that had already been old when Elizabeth I was young, and it was reinforced with iron bands forged from swords taken from knights who had objected to the Court’s territorial claims. The iron had gone black with age. The oak had gone dark as dried blood. The throne was not comfortable. It was not meant to be. It was empty. The Duke did not sit. The Duke paced. Sebastian Ashworth had been pacing for seventeen minutes. He was aware of the exact duration because the grandfather clock against the eastern wall — an eighteenth-century piece he had taken from its owner in 1783, along with the owner’s blood and his townhouse — was ticking with the steady precision of a mechanism that had outlasted its maker by two centuries. Sebastian had outlasted its maker too. This thought did not comfort him. He was tall, thin, and dressed in a charcoal suit tailored on Savile Row by a firm that believed its client was a hereditary peer with an aversion to daylight. His hair was iron-grey, his face angular and pale, and his eyes were the particular red that vampire eyes turned after five centuries of blood — not the bright crimson of the newly turned, but the deep, almost black red of old wine. In the dim light of the throne room he looked like a man who had been carved from the same stone as the pillars. He did not pace like a man. He paced like a caged animal, each turn at the wall precise, each stride measured, the energy contained in the movement visible to every vampire present. The Barons could feel it — the pressure of his presence, the weight of his attention, the low thrum of blood energy that radiated from him like heat from a furnace. When Sebastian paced, the court held its breath. The three Barons stood before the dais in a line, their suits rumpled, their postures deferential. Richard, the eldest, stood at the centre. To his left stood Thomas, younger in appearance though not in years, whose talent had always been observation rather than confrontation. To his right stood Octavia, four centuries old, whose loyalty to Sebastian was exceeded only by her instinct for self-preservation. Richard’s face bore the particular expression of a subordinate who has returned from a mission that was supposed to be reconnaissance and had turned into something he lacked the vocabulary to describe. The two Counts who served as Sebastian’s court officers — Hartford and Mireau, whose families had held those titles since before the word ”Count” was borrowed from the French — stood motionless against the pillars, their expressions carefully neutral. They had learned, over centuries, that visibility in the Duke’s court was a double-edged sword. Better to be furniture until summoned. ”Well?” Sebastian said. The word fell into the room like a stone into still water. Richard spoke carefully. ”He calls himself a cultivator. He claims to have been born in Cornwall in 1604. He claims this city as his own. He is... not afraid, my lord.” Sebastian stopped pacing. ”Not afraid.” ”No, my lord.” ”Of the Crimson Court.” ”Of you, specifically. He asked me to relay a message.” Richard swallowed. ”He said he is not interested in your politics, your territory, or your court. He said he is a man who wants to be left alone. And he said that if you send anyone else to his place of work, he will not be as understanding as he was being today.” Sebastian stared at Richard. The Baron did not meet his eyes — a reflex born of six centuries of vampire hierarchy, where meeting a Duke’s gaze was a challenge and a challenge was a death sentence. ”And what,” Sebastian said, each word measured and cold, ”did he do to convince you of this?” Richard was silent for a moment. Then: ”He released a pulse of energy. I — I cannot adequately describe it. It was not magic. It was not blood energy. It was something I have never felt before. It lasted less than a second.” ”And?” ”And I have not been afraid since I was turned, four hundred years ago. I was afraid then, my lord. For that one second, I was afraid.” The throne room was very quiet. Thomas and Octavia stared at the floor. Hartford shifted his weight by a fraction of an inch — a movement so small that a human would not have noticed, but Sebastian did. Sebastian noticed everything. Sebastian resumed pacing. His shoes — handmade, Italian leather, purchased from a cobbler in Mayfair who believed his customer was a diplomat — clicked against the black marble with a rhythm that the court had learned to read. Slow clicks meant consideration. Rapid clicks meant someone was about to die. The clicks were rapid. ”A cultivator,” Sebastian said. ”Born in 1604. In Cornwall.” He turned to face Richard. ”Did he offer any proof of these claims?” ”He did not offer proof, my lord. He offered tea.” ”Tea.” ”He was drinking tea when we arrived. He continued drinking it during the conversation. He appeared to consider the tea more important than our presence.” For a moment, Sebastian said nothing. The silence had a texture to it — thick, viscous, the kind of silence that precedes violence. Octavia, who had survived four centuries by reading the moods of those more powerful than herself, took an involuntary half-step backward. Thomas kept his eyes on the floor and did not breathe. The insult was not lost on any of them. Three Barons — three of the Crimson Court’s elite, each one a predator capable of killing a dozen armed mortals in the time it took to draw a breath — had been sent to deliver the Duke’s displeasure. And the man had drunk tea at them. Had continued to drink tea. Had, by every indication, considered the Duke’s authority less worthy of his attention than a cup of Earl Grey. Sebastian’s jaw tightened. The muscle was visible — a small, involuntary contraction that the court officers noted and catalogued. The Duke was losing control of his composure. This had not happened in living memory, which, for a court of immortals, was a considerable period. ”You sent three Barons,” Sebastian said, and now his voice was very quiet, which was worse than shouting, ”three of my Barons, my best, to confront this... person. And he drank tea at you.” ”Yes, my lord.” ”He drank tea at you.” ”Yes, my lord.” Thomas, calculating that the silence had gone on long enough to be dangerous, ventured forward. ”He also released a spiritual pressure that made Richard lose consciousness for a fraction of a second. And his eyes are gold. Not amber, not the pale yellow of a newly turned — gold, like a predator’s. And his skin could not be penetrated by the claws of the two scouts sent on Tuesday, who are both — one is unconscious, one is traumatised—” ”I am aware of the Tuesday incident,” Sebastian said, and Thomas fell silent. ”And there was the matter of his pulse, my lord,” Octavia said quietly, her voice carefully flat. ”Thomas noticed it. The man has a pulse. A heartbeat. He is alive, my lord, in a way that we are not. He breathes. His blood moves on its own.” She paused. ”He is, by every measure we possess, a living man. And he held three Barons motionless without rising from his chair.” Sebastian climbed the dais to his throne. He did not sit — he stood beside it, one hand resting on the armrest, the carved wood groaning slightly under the pressure of his grip. The armrest was oak, reinforced with iron bands. It groaned because Sebastian’s hand was applying approximately three hundred pounds of force without his noticing. The oak cracked. A sound like a gunshot in the silence of the throne room — a sharp, wet crack that echoed off the stone pillars and the domed ceiling. A splinter of wood the length of a finger jumped free and fell to the marble floor. The iron bands beneath the wood began to bend, the metal yielding with a low, agonised groan, as if the throne itself were crying out. Sebastian did not notice. His eyes were fixed on the middle distance, seeing something that was not in the room. The court noticed. Hartford and Mireau exchanged a glance — the first time either of them had looked at anything other than the floor in Sebastian’s presence in forty years. Octavia’s lips thinned. Thomas’s hands, clasped behind his back, tightened until the knuckles went white. They all knew what it meant when the Duke lost control of his strength. It meant the Duke was losing control of himself. And a Duke who could not control himself could not, by the oldest laws of the Court, be trusted to control anything else. None of them said a word. None of them dared. ”Six hundred years,” Sebastian said. ”The Crimson Court has ruled London’s night for six hundred years. We have survived the plague, the Reformation, the Gunpowder Plot, the Blitz, and the invention of CCTV. We have maintained order, territory, and the Veil itself. And now a man in a tweed jacket tells me that my city is his city, and I should leave him alone.” He looked down at his court. ”This is not acceptable.” No one spoke. No one ever spoke when the Duke used that tone. The silence was absolute, broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock and, faintly, the sound of Sebastian’s grip tightening further on the ruined armrest. More wood cracked. More iron groaned. ”I am calling the Crimson Court,” Sebastian said. ”Full session. All seven Dukes.” A murmur rippled through the chamber — the first sound the Counts had made in an hour, a breath of shock that moved through the room like wind through dead leaves. The Crimson Court had not been called in full for eighty-three years — not since the Soho Incident of 1943, when a rogue vampire had broken the Veil and the seven Dukes had convened to decide his fate. The rogue had been executed, his line extinguished, his territory redistributed. That had been a matter of discipline. This would be a matter of war. ”Shall I draft the summonses, my lord?” Hartford asked, his voice steady despite the tension. Hartford had been a soldier before he was a vampire. He knew how to deliver himself of bad news without flinching. ”Draft them,” Sebastian said. ”All seven. I want them delivered by dawn. Personal delivery. No intermediaries.” ”And the subject of the session, my lord?” Sebastian looked at him. Hartford did not flinch, but his jaw tightened. ”Declaration,” Sebastian said. ”We will discuss a Declaration.” Octavia’s eyes widened fractionally. A Declaration — a formal statement of the Court’s intent, binding on every vampire within its territory. Declarations were not made lightly. A Declaration of hostility would commit every vampire in London to a single course of action, from the Dukes down to the newest fledgling. It would be, in effect, a declaration of war against a single man. She had been in the room when the last Declaration was made, in 1943. She remembered the weight of it, the way the words had settled over the court like a shroud. But that had been against a rogue — one of their own, a vampire who had broken their laws. This would be against an unknown. An alien. Something none of them understood. She wondered, privately, whether Sebastian understood what he was doing. She wondered whether any of them did. And then she put the thought away, because wondering was dangerous in the Crimson Court, and she had survived four centuries by not wondering where the Duke could hear her. ”There is one other matter, my lord,” Richard said, his voice very small. Sebastian turned. ”What?” ”The man — the cultivator. There was a human at the museum. A woman. She was watching the entrance when we left. She appeared to be... investigating something.” Sebastian’s eyes narrowed. ”A human? Investigating?” ”She carried a notebook and a badge. She may have been police. She appeared to notice us — or at least, she appeared to notice that we were leaving in a hurry.” Sebastian considered this. A human detective, investigating the museum, at the same time as his Barons were visiting the cultivator. Coincidence was possible. Coincidence was also, in Sebastian’s experience, rarely just coincidence. ”Find out who she is,” Sebastian said. ”Quietly. Do not harm her — the Veil is strained enough without drawing mortal attention.” He paused. ”But watch her. If the cultivator has human allies, I want to know.” Richard bowed. The three Barons retreated from the throne room, moving with the speed of subordinates who had been dismissed and wished to be elsewhere before the Duke’s mood deteriorated further. Hartford and Mireau followed, the Counts’ faces masks of professional calm, though Hartford’s hand trembled slightly as he reached for the door. The door closed behind them with a sound like a tomb sealing. Sebastian stood alone in his throne room. The grandfather clock ticked. Each tick was a small, precise sound, a mechanical heartbeat in a chamber that had none of its own. The crimson drapes stirred in a draught from the ancient tunnels below — tunnels that connected the Undercity to the London above, a network of passages that had been old when Dickens was young. Somewhere in those depths, five hundred vampires went about their nocturnal business — hunting, feeding, maintaining the infrastructure of a hidden civilization that had outlasted empires. Sebastian Ashworth, Duke of the Crimson Court, eight hundred and fifty-three years old, ruler of London’s supernatural underworld, looked at his hand. The one that had gripped the throne’s armrest. The oak was cracked — split along the grain, a fissure three inches deep that exposed the dark heart of the wood. The iron bands were bent, warped outward as if something inside the armrest had tried to escape. He had not realised he was squeezing that hard. He had not, in fact, been aware that he was squeezing at all. He looked at the damage. Three hundred pounds of force, applied unconsciously, the way a man might grip a railing when he learns that the ground beneath him is not solid. His body had known something his mind had not yet accepted. What are you? he thought. And not the way a scholar would have asked it — academically, with the detached curiosity of a researcher encountering a new specimen. Sebastian thought it the way a wolf thinks it when it encounters a scent it cannot identify. Not with curiosity. With fear. And Sebastian Ashworth did not tolerate fear. Not in himself, not in his court, not in his enemies. Fear was a response to the unknown, and the unknown could be made known, and the known could be controlled, and the controlled could be destroyed. This was the creed by which he had lived for six centuries. This was the foundation upon which the Crimson Court had been built. He would call the Crimson Court. He would propose a Declaration. And if this cultivator, this tea-drinking, tweed-wearing, gold-eyed anomaly refused to submit, then the full might of London’s vampire civilization would descend upon him like the wrath of a god. Sebastian almost smiled at the thought. Then he remembered the sound of Richard’s voice — the slight tremor, the hesitation, the way the Baron had struggled for words he could not find — describing the pulse of energy. He remembered Richard saying afraid, and meaning it. Richard, who had not been afraid in four hundred years. Richard, who had faced witch-hunters and rival courts and the bombs of the Blitz without flinching. Richard, who had been afraid for one second and had come home unable to describe what had frightened him. The smile died on his lips. He sat on his throne. The cracked armrest dug into his palm, a sharp edge of broken oak pressing against skin that should not have been able to feel pain but did. He did not adjust his grip. The discomfort was useful. It was something to focus on. Something real, something physical, something that belonged to the world he understood — the world of oak and iron and stone, the world of territory and hierarchy and blood. Not the world of gold eyes and tea and a pulse of energy that lasted less than a second and left a four-hundred-year-old predator shaking. The grandfather clock ticked. The drapes stirred. The throne room was very dark, and very old, and very quiet. He did not sleep that day. He could not. He sat on his throne in the dark, and let the clock count the seconds out for him, one by one, like a man tallying a debt he did not yet know the size of. For the first time in six hundred years, Sebastian Ashworth was afraid of the dark.
