I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Sebastian did not come to the roof.

Arthur waited five minutes. Sipped his tea. Watched the stars through the light pollution — they were clearer tonight, he noted, probably because every supernatural being within a five-mile radius had fled the area, and whatever ambient dark energy usually clouded the sky was temporarily absent.

Sebastian did not come.

Instead, Arthur’s divine sense tracked what happened on the street below. It was, from a certain perspective, more interesting than a conversation would have been.

The Duke stood. Slowly. The handkerchief — Arthur’s handkerchief, monogrammed, a gift from a colleague in 1923 — was pressed against his face, absorbing the dark blood that leaked from his disrupted energy system. His other hand hung at his side, and the broken Blood Dragon hung above him, flickering, its scales dull, its wings torn, its core cracked and leaking dark light like a cracked lamp leaking oil.

Aldric and the female Marquis — Victoria, Arthur’s divine sense informed him, reading the name from the blood-bond network — approached their Duke. They did not touch him. They stood at his sides, close enough to catch him if he fell, far enough to not presume.

”My Lord,” Aldric said. ”We should retreat. Regroup. Report to the Court —”

”No.”

The word was flat. Final. The word of a being who had spent eight centuries learning never to retreat, never to concede, never to acknowledge that any force in the world could be beyond his reach. Sebastian Ashworth had not survived the Black Death, the Inquisition, the Blitz, and three vampire civil wars by running.

He had survived by being the thing that others ran from.

”Absorb it,” Sebastian said.

Aldric went still. ”My Lord — the dragon is unstable. If you reabsorb a construct with a cracked core —”

”I said absorb it.”

Victoria took a step back. Even from the roof, Arthur could see the look on her face — the expression of a subordinate who has watched her superior make a decision she knows is catastrophic and knows she cannot prevent.

Sebastian raised his hand. The broken Blood Dragon responded — not with the smooth obedience of before, but with a shudder, a flicker, the spasmodic movement of a wounded thing being called back to its creator. The dragon dissolved. Its body, its wings, its scales, its teeth — all of it unwound, collapsing back into the raw dark essence from which it had been formed.

That essence flowed into Sebastian.

Arthur set down his teacup.

He had not expected this. He had expected retreat, negotiation, perhaps a grudging acceptance of the reality gap. He had not expected Sebastian to reabsorb a broken construct — to take the cracked core, the destabilized dark essence, the energy Arthur had already damaged, and pull it back into his own body.

It was, in cultivation terms, the equivalent of swallowing a poisoned pill to gain a temporary surge in power. Desperate. Reckless. The kind of decision that shortened a cultivator’s lifespan by centuries in exchange for a few minutes of heightened ability.

Sebastian’s body changed.

The dark essence of the Blood Dragon poured into him, filling the cracks in his energy system, overflowing, flooding. His skin darkened — not bruised, not injured, but saturated, as if the dark light that had powered the dragon was now trying to power him, to push him past whatever ceiling he had lived under for eight centuries.

His eyes blazed. Not crimson now — red, the pure, burning red of heated metal. His muscles swelled beneath the charcoal suit. His canines extended past his lower lip. Dark energy radiated from him in waves, cracking the tarmac beneath his feet, shattering the windows that had survived the initial battle.

Then the changes went deeper. The sound came first — a wet, grinding crack, like someone twisting a knuckle, amplified a hundredfold. Sebastian’s spine elongated, vertebrae pushing outward against his skin in visible ridges. His shoulder blades split the seams of his jacket as something extruded from his back — not wings, not quite, but dark, vein-covered spurs of condensed blood essence, twitching and dripping. His jaw unhinged and reset wider, the cheekbones cracking outward to accommodate a skull that was no longer entirely human. The charcoal suit tore along every seam and hung from him in strips. His fingernails thickened, curved, blackened into claws that left gouges in the tarmac when his hands flexed.

The transformation was not clean. It was not elegant. It was a body being forced past its design specifications, flesh and dark energy struggling against each other, and the result was something that looked like it had crawled out of its own skin and hadn’t quite finished.

Aldric retreated. Victoria retreated. Every conscious vampire on the street retreated — not by choice but by instinct, the deep, primal recognition that whatever Sebastian was becoming, it was not safe to be near.

Arthur stood on the parapet and watched.

Interesting, he thought. He’s forcing a breakthrough. Using the dragon’s energy to push past his natural limit. It won’t hold — the cracked core will destabilize his system within minutes. But for those minutes, he’ll be... stronger.

He estimated the result. Sebastian, enhanced by the reabsorbed dragon, would reach approximately the level of a Nascent Soul cultivator at peak stage. Perhaps, if the dark essence synergized well, he might touch the edges of the next realm — a pseudo-Soul Formation state, unstable and temporary.

It would be the most powerful attack Arthur had faced tonight. By a significant margin.

It would not be enough.

Sebastian looked up at the roof. His red eyes found Arthur’s, and for the first time tonight, there was no calculation in them. No strategy, no assessment, no eight-century-old patience. There was only rage — the incandescent, uncontrollable fury of a being who had been absolute master of his domain for longer than most civilizations existed, and had been treated, by this tweed-clad academic, as a minor inconvenience.

Sebastian jumped.

He didn’t fly — vampires couldn’t fly, not truly — but the leap carried him forty meters straight up, propelled by dark energy that burned in his legs like rocket fuel. He cleared the parapet, landed on the roof, and stood facing Arthur.

The roof tiles beneath him cracked. Dark energy pulsed from his body in visible waves. The air around him shimmered, distorted, as if reality itself was struggling to accommodate his presence.

”You broke my dragon,” Sebastian said. His voice was wrong — layered, doubled, as if the dragon’s voice had merged with his own. ”You broke my dragon and gave me a handkerchief.”

”I noticed you were bleeding,” Arthur said.

Taken from NovelPhoenix, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

”I am Sebastian Ashworth. I am the Duke of the London Crimson Court. I have walked this earth for eight hundred and twelve years. I have bled kings and peasants and mages and wolves, and no one — no one — has ever made me bleed my own blood.”

”You’re bleeding now,” Arthur pointed out.

Sebastian moved.

The speed was different. Not the 0.3-mach sprint of before — this was faster, much faster, dark energy propelling him at speeds that turned him into a blur even to Arthur’s eyes. Not invisible, not untrackable — Arthur’s divine sense followed him easily — but fast enough that the physical world became irrelevant. Sebastian crossed the ten meters between them in a hundredth of a second.

His fist connected with Arthur’s jaw.

Arthur’s head moved. Not much — a few centimeters, the way a head moves when someone taps your chin to get your attention. But it moved. The qi barrier, passive and automatic, had absorbed most of the impact. What got through — maybe 0.1% of the force — was enough to shift his head slightly.

It was, Arthur reflected, the first time tonight that anyone had made him move.

He looked at Sebastian. The Duke’s fist was still against his jaw, dark energy crackling around the point of contact, Sebastian’s red eyes wide with the desperate hope that the blow had done something — anything — to close the gap.

For one heartbeat, Sebastian believed it had. The head had moved. The barrier had flickered — he’d felt it give, just barely, like a finger pressing into ice that was beginning to thin. Eight hundred years of accumulated power, every drop of blood essence he had ever consumed, every century of growth compressed into a single strike, and it had worked. The impossible thing — making the tweed-clad god in front of him react — had happened. His lips peeled back from elongated fangs. His claws dug into the air beside Arthur’s face. For one perfect, incandescent moment, Sebastian Ashworth felt hope.

”You felt that,” Sebastian said. Not a question.

”I felt that,” Arthur confirmed.

Hope flared in Sebastian’s eyes. His fist pressed harder. Dark energy screamed around the point of contact. He was pouring everything into that single point of connection, as if pushing just a little further might crack the wall entirely.

”Now let me show you what it feels like when I feel something.”

Arthur backhanded him.

There was no technique. No Palm Thunder, no qi discharge, no cultivation skill with a poetic name and a nine-character epithet. Just a backhand — the same motion he’d used on the first vampire of the night, the same casual, contemptuous swing that said you are not worth a real technique.

Sebastian left the roof.

He didn’t fly — vampires couldn’t fly, and the distinction mattered, because flying would have required control, and Sebastian had none. He departed. The force of Arthur’s backhand launched him off the roof, across the gap between buildings, through the air above the street, and into the building opposite.

Not through the front wall. Not through the front wall and the interior wall. Through the entire building — front wall, front room, interior wall, back room, back wall, the garden shed behind the back wall, and into the building behind that. Two complete buildings, end to end, Sebastian’s body punching through load-bearing walls and brickwork and century-old plaster like a cannonball through paper.

The first wall erupted inward in a starburst of red brick dust and lime mortar. Bricks the size of fists spun into the front parlour, shredding wallpaper and shattering a grandfather clock. Sebastian’s body tore through the interior partition — lath and plaster disintegrating around him in a white cloud — and hit the back wall with enough force to blow the Victorian chimney stack clean off the roof. It fell into the back garden in three pieces. He did not stop. The garden shed — corrugated iron, a rusted lawnmower, bags of compost — folded around him like tinfoil and was gone. Then the second building’s back wall, a cascade of London stock bricks that poured into the street like a waterfall of teeth.

The second building groaned. A section of the roof sagged. Bricks fell into the street with the sound of breaking teeth.

Arthur looked at his hand. His knuckles were slightly pink — not from impact, but from the dark energy that had surrounded Sebastian’s body. It was cold to the touch, that dark energy. Unpleasant. He rubbed his fingers together and it dissipated.

He picked up his teacup. Still warm. He sipped.

Below, the building that Sebastian had been punched through settled. Dust rose — a thick, grey-white cloud that rolled through the street like London fog, coating parked cars and startled pigeons. A chimney, destabilized, leaned and then collapsed inward with a muffled crash. Then silence.

Arthur waited.

Two minutes. Three. The dust settled.

A hand emerged from the rubble.

Sebastian crawled out.

It was, Arthur thought, one of the more impressive feats of endurance he had witnessed. The Duke’s charcoal suit was gone — not torn, not damaged, gone, disintegrated by the force of the impact and the friction of passing through two buildings. His skin was grey. Not vampire-pale — grey, the colour of a body running on empty, the dark energy that sustained him flickering like a candle in a wind. One arm hung wrong — dislocated at the shoulder, the joint shattered by the impact. His jaw, where Arthur’s backhand had connected, was swollen and dark. The dark spurs that had erupted from his back were gone — reabsorbed or broken off, leaving raw, weeping wounds. His claws had retracted. His jaw had reset to human proportions. The forced breakthrough was collapsing, the borrowed dragon-energy bleeding out of him in wisps of dark vapour that dissolved before they reached the ground.

But he was alive. And he was conscious. And he was still, somehow, standing.

Eight hundred and twelve years, Arthur thought. Say what you would about the vampire — he was resilient. A mortal cultivator hit with the same force would have been paste. Sebastian was merely ruined. That counted for something.

Though not, Arthur reflected, for enough.

Sebastian looked up at the roof. At Arthur, sitting on the parapet, drinking tea, looking down at him with an expression that might have been pity or might have been respect or might have been nothing at all.

”What are you?” Sebastian asked. The doubled voice was gone. Just Sebastian now — ragged, broken, asking the question that every vampire tonight had asked.

Arthur considered the question. He’d been avoiding it, not out of secrecy but out of a general disinclination to explain himself to people who had just tried to kill him. But Sebastian had taken a backhand that would have killed anything below the Nascent Soul level and was still standing. That earned him an answer.

”Where I come from,” Arthur said, ”we have a system of power. A progression. You begin at Qi Refining — gathering energy, strengthening the body. Then Foundation Establishment — building your core, learning to project power. Then Golden Core — condensing your energy into a solid form. Then Nascent Soul — your consciousness becomes independent of your body.”

He sipped his tea.

”Think of it like this. You are a candle. A fine candle — eight hundred years of wax, a steady flame. You have burned longer and brighter than any candle around you, and you are proud of it, and you should be. Qi Refining is a match. Foundation Establishment is an oil lamp. Golden Core is a bonfire. Nascent Soul is a furnace.” He paused. Let the metaphor settle. ”I am the sun. You do not close the gap between a candle and the sun by adding more wax.”

He looked at Sebastian. Directly. Without the scholar’s detachment, without the mild professor’s smile.

”Then there is Soul Formation. At the Soul Formation stage, you don’t just use the laws of nature. You understand them. You become part of them. Lightning, wind, gravity, time — they’re not tools you borrow. They’re extensions of your will.”

”I am a Soul Formation cultivator. I reached this stage approximately four hundred years ago, in the mountains of what you call China. Since then, I have spent my time studying, reading, and occasionally correcting the British Museum’s bronze vessel cataloguing.”

He set down his teacup.

”You’ve been alive for eight hundred years. In my world, eight hundred years of cultivation — proper cultivation, with spiritual energy, with techniques, with a lineage stretching back millennia — would bring you to the Golden Core stage. Perhaps Nascent Soul, if you were talented. The gap between Nascent Soul and Soul Formation is the same as the gap between a mortal and a Nascent Soul. It is not a gap you can close with rage, or numbers, or even a Blood Dragon.”

He stood.

”The gap has a name. Jingjie. Realm boundary. It means the difference between us is not one of degree. It is one of kind.”

Sebastian, on his knees in the rubble of two buildings, looked up at the man who had just explained, with the patient clarity of a university lecturer, why eight centuries of vampiric power were insufficient. Something behind his eyes — the last ember of eight hundred years of sovereign certainty — went out.

”Go home,” Arthur said. ”Tell your Court what happened here. Tell them about the lightning, the sword, the tea. Tell them that the man they sent fifty soldiers to kill was drinking Earl Grey when they arrived, and was still drinking it when they fell.”

He paused.

”And tell them this: I don’t want a war. I wanted to read Pride and Prejudice. I still want to read Pride and Prejudice. If no one attacks me, no one gets hurt. If someone attacks me...”

He looked at the wreckage. The smoking Barons. The scattered vampires. The two Marquis, standing frozen on the far side of the street. The Duke, kneeling in rubble.

”Well,” Arthur said. ”You’ve seen what happens.”

He sat back down. Picked up his tea. Took a sip. Checked the temperature — still acceptable. Checked his watch — past midnight. He had a nine o’clock meeting with the curator of the Asian antiquities department. He would need to leave early to finish cataloguing the Shang dynasty ritual bronzes before the public galleries opened.

”Goodnight, Your Grace.”
