I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The summit of Scafell Pike was empty at 4:47 AM on a Saturday, and Arthur Pendelton stood on the highest point in England with mud on his boots, wind in his face, and the memory of the seal beneath London cold in his blood.

He thought about mountains. Not this one specifically — though Scafell Pike was, in its own craggy, unpretentious way, a fine example of an Ordovician volcanic extrusion, and Arthur, who had spent decades cataloguing artefacts from cultures that predated geology as a science, could appreciate the four hundred and fifty million years of patient tectonic violence that had produced it. He thought about the Wudang range, where he had trained. The Kunlun peaks, where Li Wei still sat in his cave. Emei, Hua — all the sacred mountains of the cultivation world, where lingqi misted the morning air and spirit beasts drank from streams that tasted of lightning.

This mountain had no mist of lingqi. The air was clean, cold, entirely ordinary; the streams tasted of peat and rain; the only beasts were Herdwick sheep, regarding Arthur with the blank hostility of animals domesticated for a thousand years who resented every minute of it.

And yet, six hundred metres below his feet, buried in Caledonian granite older than the dinosaurs, there was a spirit vein.

He had flown through the night — left London at eleven, rising through the cloud layer into a sky so clear the stars seemed close enough to touch, then northwest at three hundred miles an hour, the cities passing below in constellations of orange light. Milton Keynes. Birmingham. Manchester. Then darkness as the Peak District gave way to the Lakes, the light pollution fell away, and the world below became the ancient, glaciated landscape that had inspired Wordsworth and Coleridge and, more relevantly to Arthur’s interests, had drawn a cultivator from the Qin dynasty two thousand years before.

He had landed in the Wasdale Valley at three and begun the climb on foot. He could have flown to the summit. He should have flown. But walking up a mountain in the dark was a contemplative act, and Arthur needed contemplation. The past three days had been the longest of his recent life — including the night he had fought fifty vampires, which had at least been straightforward. The tremor, the presence, the crack in the seal — he needed to process them at the speed of walking, not the speed of flight.

His boots — Church’s, hand-stitched, older than the Industrial Revolution — were ruined, claimed by the peat bog with the slow determination of a geological process. His tweed, which had survived vampire battles and blood-pact purifications and one memorable incident involving a possessed teapot, was damp and smelled of sheep.

He stood on the summit cairn and looked east. Dawn was coming — a thin line of grey above the fells, spreading like watercolour on wet paper, turning the sky from black to indigo to the pale cold blue of a Lake District morning. Below, Wastwater lay dark and still, the deepest lake in England, its surface mirroring the mountains with photographic precision. The screes fell away in sharp, shattered lines — the bones of a mountain that had worn to rubble over four hundred and fifty million years.

It was beautiful. Arthur, who had seen mountains that glowed with spiritual energy and valleys that housed creatures millennia old, found he was still moved by the mortal world’s beauty. A mountain that was just a mountain. A lake that was just a lake. A world allowed to be ordinary, and extraordinary in its ordinariness.

The Western Wanderer had seen this too. Two thousand years ago, another cultivator had stood on this mountain — or above it, flying — and had seen the same dawn, the same lake, the same screes. And had looked down through the rock and found what Arthur was about to find.

Arthur sat on the summit, crossed his legs, placed his hands on his knees, and closed his eyes. His divine sense extended downward.

He felt the summit first: shattered slate, fractured by frost and rain. Below it, volcanic bedrock — andesite and rhyolite from the Ordovician, when England was a volcanic island arc in the southern hemisphere — dense, shot through with mineral veins glittering like threads of metal in dark fabric. Deeper: aquifers in fractured rock, cold and clean; the thermal layer where the geothermal gradient warmed the stone; strata of shale and mudstone holding the fossils of creatures that had died before the first tree grew on land.

At four hundred metres, a change — not in the rock but in the energy. The thin, barely perceptible background field that Arthur had been breathing like a man through a straw for four centuries began to thicken. A gradient. A direction. The energy was flowing downward, toward something, being pulled.

At five hundred metres the gradient steepened. The lingqi was no longer a hum but a current, following channels shaped not by geology but by something deliberate. The rock itself had been altered — mineral structure rearranged at a molecular level, aligned to conduct spiritual energy the way copper conducts electricity.

At six hundred metres, Arthur found it.

The spirit vein.

His breath stopped. The Azure Lotus cycle froze in his meridians.

It was real. Not a trace, not an echo — a true, concentrated, pressurised reservoir of lingqi, trapped in a chamber of granite six hundred metres beneath the Lake District. Dense and rich, carrying the heaviness of earth-aligned spiritual energy: steady, patient, accumulated over millennia.

In the cultivation world, veins were graded. Low-grade: a trickle, enough for Qi Refining. Mid-grade: the standard resource of established sects, capable of raising dozens through Foundation Establishment and Golden Core. High-grade: rare, contested, the foundation of major lineages. Legendary-grade — the kind beneath the ancient sects of the Kunlun — produced Nascent Souls, Soul Formation cultivators, the occasional ascendant who transcended the world entirely.

This vein was mid-grade. Solid. Reliable — the kind a Golden Core sect would build its mountain gate around and defend with three generations of disciples. In England, a country with no spirit veins and no one who could use lingqi, it was a miracle buried in stone, pressurised by the seal that contained it, growing denser with every decade.

Arthur’s dantian — running on fumes in this barren land for four centuries — responded. It stirred like a hungry man smelling food; his meridians dilated instinctively.

He pulled his divine sense back from the vein and examined the seal.

The formation was elegant.

Four interlocking layers, nested with the precision of a Chinese puzzle box, sitting on the vein like a lid on a pressure cooker. Arthur had studied formations as a master calligrapher studies brushwork — not just the mechanics but the art, the hand behind the technique. This formation had been built by a master.

The outermost layer was a barrier — standard containment, though Arthur noted with professional appreciation that the energy placement was cleaner than his own. The strokes were precise, economical, without the over-reinforcement most cultivators added out of caution. The Wanderer had been confident: each thread exactly where it needed to be, no more, no less.

The second layer was concealment — sophisticated beyond hiding. It actively redirected attention: a mortal walking this mountain would feel vague disinterest; a mage’s instruments would return false readings. The Conclave’s monitoring had been fooled for three centuries, until Eleanor’s deep array caught a faint leak.

The third layer was a resonance dampener — and it was strained. A counter-frequency matrix that cancelled the vein’s natural resonance like noise-cancelling headphones, it had degraded over two millennia of constant operation. The counter-frequencies had drifted slightly out of alignment, producing the faint harmonic that Eleanor’s instruments had detected. The formation was aging.

And then Arthur noticed something that caught his breath.

The brushwork. The style. The curve of the energy threads at the junction points; the slight leftward lean of the diagonal strokes; the characteristic density of the anchor nodes. He had seen this hand before.

Three days ago. Three hundred and twelve metres below London. The seal on the ancient evil — the seal that was cracking, the one that contained the vast presence that had made his divine sense recoil.

The same hand. The same cultivator.

The Western Wanderer had sealed both. The spirit vein beneath Scafell Pike and the ancient evil beneath London were not separate works. They were one integrated design — two formations, three hundred miles apart, built by the same master, connected by the same architectural logic.

The fourth layer — deepest, pressed against the vein itself — was different. The energy patterns were arranged not in a functional matrix but in structure Arthur recognised with a jolt that went through his dantian like an electric shock.

Text. Formation script — characters written not in ink but in spiritual energy, at a density that required Soul Formation to read, each one unfolding into a weight of meaning.

Arthur read it. And recognised the brushwork a third time — not just the same style but the same lineage. The characters were older, the grammar archaic, the vocabulary shifted by two thousand years of drift. But the root was the same. The Western Wanderer had been an Azure Lotus cultivator. A predecessor. A senior, in the lineage sense — one who had walked the same path, breathed the same techniques, studied the same archive.

Arthur felt a surge of something he could not immediately name. Recognition. Connection. He was not, as he had believed for four hundred years, the only cultivator to have walked this island. Someone from his lineage had been here before him — had stood on this mountain, made the same journey from the Kunlun range, found the same loneliness and the same emptiness — and beneath this mountain, the same miracle.

And had left a message.

It was short; the Wanderer had been economical with words as with energy. But the warning at its heart was clear, and as Arthur read it, the morning cold seemed to deepen.

To my successor: the vein and the seal are one. Open the vein, and the seal below weakens. Choose carefully.

Arthur opened his eyes.

Dawn had come. The Lake District spread below in shades of green and grey and gold, beautiful and ancient and unaware of what lay beneath it. Wastwater shimmered; the fells marched west toward the sea; a raven landed on the cairn beside him, tilted its head, and looked at him with an intelligence that was, for a moment, unsettling.

The vein and the seal were one. The spirit vein was not merely sealed — it was connected to the seal beneath London, part of the same two-thousand-year-old solution to a problem the Western Wanderer had not been able to solve.

Arthur could unseal the vein. He had the knowledge, the skill, and now the motivation. Its lingqi could restore him to full strength — his dantian full, his meridians clear, his power where it had been in the cultivation world. He could be whole, a thing he had not been in four centuries.

But opening the vein would weaken the seal on the thing beneath London. The thing that had made his divine sense recoil. The thing a Soul Formation cultivator — possibly stronger than Arthur — had been unable to destroy.

Choose carefully.

The raven watched him. Arthur watched the raven. The wind blew; the mountain stood, indifferent, as it had stood for four hundred and fifty million years.

Arthur needed to study the full formation — the precise connection between vein and seal, the energy flow, whether he could draw lingqi without compromising the seal, whether the seal could be modified to run on reduced power. He needed to read the rest of the message.

He closed his eyes and extended his divine sense back into the mountain, into the formation, into the text a predecessor — a fellow Azure Lotus cultivator, a spiritual ancestor — had left in the heart of a British mountain two thousand years ago.

The raven tilted its head the other way, then flew away, leaving Arthur alone on the summit, reading the words of a dead man in the language of a world that had forgotten him.

It would take most of the day to read what the Wanderer had written. By nightfall, Arthur suspected, he would understand exactly how much trouble he was in.
