I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

Arthur landed on the street. Not jumped. Not fell. Landed — the way a stone lands when dropped into still water: straight down, no fuss, a small crater in the tarmac where his feet touched ground. The Azure Lotus Sword hung in the air beside him, hovering without support, its blade humming at a frequency that made the streetlamps flicker. The vampires on the street — ten of them, the outer cordon — turned toward him. Their eyes reflected the light like cats’. Their claws extended. Their jaws unhinged, showing canines that could punch through steel. Arthur looked at them the way a professor looks at a stack of ungraded papers. The first one moved. Vampire-class. Fast — twenty meters per second, fast enough that a human eye would register only a blur. It crossed the ten meters between them in half a second, claws aimed at Arthur’s throat, jaws wide, a killing strike perfected over decades of hunting mortals. Arthur backhanded it. Not a technique. Not a spell. Not a martial art move with a flowing name and a nine-character Chinese epithet. A backhand. The kind a mother uses on a rude child. His palm connected with the vampire’s jaw, and the creature — eighty kilograms of supernatural muscle and predatory instinct — became a projectile. It left the ground with a sound like a cricket bat meeting a watermelon. It crossed the street. It hit the terraced house opposite and went through the front wall — brick facade first, the Victorian masonry exploding outward in a shower of dust and red powder. Then through the plasterboard of the interior wall, which offered even less resistance, collapsing in a white cloud. Then through the back wall, the kitchen tiles shattering like crockery in an earthquake. Then it landed in the garden behind, where it lay motionless in a flower bed, its legs twitching once, twice, then still. A trail of three perfectly vampire-shaped holes ran through the house like a cartoon gag. Somewhere inside, a smoke alarm began to shriek. The other nine vampires froze. Not the tactical freeze of predators reassessing prey. The involuntary freeze of creatures whose nervous systems had just received information their brains could not process. They had seen their comrade — a vampire who could punch through steel, who could outrace a sports car, who had hunted and killed for over a century — get swatted across a street and through a house by a man who had not removed his hands from his pockets until the moment of contact. Their claws, extended a second ago, retracted slightly. Involuntarily. The way a dog’s ears flatten before it has decided to submit. Arthur hadn’t moved from his crater. His tweed jacket was still buttoned. His tie was still straight. The teacup was still on the parapet above, still warm. ”Your friend,” Arthur said, ”isn’t dead. I held back. You won’t have the same courtesy if you continue.” The vampires looked at each other. Then they all moved at once. Nine bodies, nine blurs, nine sets of claws converging from every angle. It was a coordinated assault — they had hunted in packs for decades, centuries. They knew how to flank, how to feint, how to draw a target’s attention left while the real strike came from the right. Against a Soul Formation cultivator, it was like watching children try to drown the ocean. Elizabeth is about to reject Mr. Darcy’s first proposal, Arthur thought, somewhat distractedly. That’s the pivotal scene. The entire novel turns on it. I should have brought the book down with me. Arthur extended two fingers. The Azure Lotus Sword — still hovering — moved on its own. The sword didn’t fly in the way a Western mind would understand flight. It didn’t travel from point A to point B. It simply was at point A, and then was at point B — the space between, an afterthought. Three vampires on the left flank lost their clawed hands simultaneously — clean cuts, jade-white light trailing from the wounds like phosphorescence. They screamed. The sound was high and thin, the scream of a predator that has never, in its entire existence, experienced being prey. Arthur’s left hand opened. A pulse of qi — invisible, formless, but as solid as a battering ram — swept the three vampires on the right flank off their feet and into a parked car. The car crumpled inward. The alarm shrieked, then died. Two vampires came from the front. Arthur stepped between them — not dodging, not weaving, simply being in the space they weren’t — and touched each one on the chest. Light flared. Their inverted energy systems, the dark blood-magic that animated their bodies, collapsed under the contact like a candle flame hit by a gust of wind. They dropped. Not dead — Arthur was being precise — but their legs would not obey them for several hours. Four remained on the street. They had stopped attacking. They were staring. Arthur adjusted his tie. The knot had shifted perhaps two millimetres to the left during the exchange. He corrected it with one hand, a small, precise motion — the kind of gesture a man makes before entering a meeting, not after dismantling nine vampires. The silk settled back into its Windsor knot with a soft click. Darcy’s pride is the obstacle, he thought, straightening his cufflinks. But Elizabeth’s prejudice is the mirror. Each must break before they can see each other clearly. Austen understood that the real battle is never with the other person. From the building above, the main force poured out. Thirty-eight vampires, ten Barons — the full weight of the Crimson Court’s operational strength, funnelling through the doors and windows of the townhouse like water through a broken dam. They hit the street and spread out, surrounding Arthur in a ring of pale faces and extended claws. Fifty against one. Or rather, forty-one against one, since nine were already down. Richard — the lead Baron, the one who had visited the museum — pushed through the crowd. He was taller than the others, older, his features sharper. His eyes were the deep crimson of a vampire who had fed recently and well. ”What are you?” he said. ”I told you,” Arthur said. ”I’m a man who was trying to read a book.” ”You’re not human.” ”That’s where you’re wrong. I’m very human. More human than you, in fact — I was born human, and I’ll die human. You were born human too, once. What happened?” Richard’s jaw tightened. He turned to the vampires behind him. ”All of you. At once.” They came. Forty-one vampires, ten of them Barons, attacking simultaneously from every direction. The street became a whirlwind of claws, fangs, and dark energy. They moved at their maximum speed, their maximum strength, hitting harder than they had ever hit anything in their long, bloody existence. Arthur let go of the sword. The Azure Lotus Sword rose. It hung above the street, ten meters up, and then it began to move. What happened next would be described, in the years that followed, as the Night of the Jade Rain — 碧雨之夜. The sword multiplied — not literally, but it moved so fast that the eye perceived a dozen blades, then twenty, then fifty, each one trailing a line of jade-white light. The light crisscrossed the street like a loom, and every thread it drew ended in a cut. The jade light was not like fire or lightning. It was clean — the colour of new leaves after spring rain, of jade polished for a thousand years. It made no sound when it cut. It simply passed through, and where it passed, things separated. Claws from fingers. Fangs from jaws. Tendons from bone. The cuts were so precise that several vampires didn’t realise they’d been struck until they tried to move and found their limbs politely declining the request. Vampires fell. Not dead — Arthur was being careful, always careful, because the Conclave monitored mortality in supernatural conflicts and he had no interest in filling out paperwork — but they fell. Claws severed. Jaws dislocated. Legs cut out from under them. The jade light touched them and their bodies simply stopped cooperating. They dropped like puppets with cut strings, piling on the tarmac in heaps of groaning, twitching, suddenly-mortal flesh. Arthur walked through the centre of the storm. His hands were in his pockets. The sword fought for him, circling, striking, returning — an extension of his divine sense that operated with the autonomy of a well-trained hunting falcon. Meanwhile, Arthur himself simply walked, and every vampire that came within arm’s reach learned why. He didn’t punch. He didn’t kick. He touched them — a finger to the shoulder, a palm to the chest, a tap on the forehead — and the qi that flowed from the contact was not violent but corrective. It entered their inverted energy systems and un-inverted them. The dark blood-magic that gave them speed and strength flickered, stuttered, and went out, like a television losing signal. They dropped to their knees, suddenly, terrifyingly mortal. Mr. Collins is about to propose, Arthur thought, touching a vampire on the forehead and watching it crumple. The most awkward proposal in English literature. I wonder if this is what it feels like to be Mr. Collins — going through the motions of something you believe is significant, while everyone around you wishes you’d simply stop. A Baron lunged at him from behind. Arthur didn’t turn. The sword did — a single arc, backhand, so fast the air cracked. The Baron’s claws, hardened by two centuries of blood-magic, separated from his hands at the wrist. He stared at the stumps. The stumps stared back. ”Sit down,” Arthur said. The Baron sat down. Not because he chose to. Not because the tactical situation warranted sitting. He sat because the voice — calm, level, unhurried, the voice of a man who had already decided the outcome of this encounter and every encounter that would follow it — entered his ears and travelled down his spine and into his legs, and his legs simply obeyed. Two centuries of predatory instinct, two centuries of being the apex of every food chain he’d ever entered, and his legs folded under him like a folding chair. He sat on the cold tarmac, his severed wrists dripping black blood, and he could not, for the life of him, stand up. He tried. His thighs strained. His claws scraped the road surface. Nothing. His body had been given an instruction, and his body intended to follow it. Three more Barons came from the right, moving in tight formation — a military drill, shields of hardened blood-magic overlapping. Arthur raised his right hand, palm open, and pushed the air. The push wasn’t aimed at the Barons. It was aimed at the space between them and him. The air compressed into a wall of force that hit the formation like a truck. All three Barons went backward, skipping across the tarmac like stones across a pond, until they hit the bus stop shelter and folded into the wreckage. A vampire — young, desperate, operating on instinct rather than tactics — leapt onto Arthur’s back. It clung there, claws digging into the tweed jacket, fangs reaching for the neck. Arthur reached over his shoulder, grabbed the vampire by the collar, and set him down on the pavement with the casual efficiency of a man removing a cat from a kitchen counter. The vampire’s feet touched the ground. Arthur’s hand was still on his collar. ”Stay,” he said. The vampire stayed. Not in the sense of ”remaining in the general area.” In the sense of staying. His feet rooted to the pavement. His claws retracted. His fangs retracted. His whole body entered a state of rigid, trembling stillness — the posture of a animal that has been told, in no uncertain terms, that it is not to move. He would remain exactly where he was, in that exact posture, for the next forty-seven minutes, until the Thames Metropolitan Police’s supernatural division arrived and found a vampire standing at attention on a Marylebone pavement like a soldier waiting for inspection. Thirty seconds. That was how long the street battle lasted. Thirty seconds from the moment Arthur landed to the moment the last vampire hit the ground. In those thirty seconds, forty-one combat-rated vampires and ten Barons of the Crimson Court were disassembled with the precision of a surgeon and the contempt of a god. Arthur stood in the centre of the street, surrounded by groaning bodies and severed claws and the acrid smell of disrupted blood-magic. His jacket was slightly rumpled. He smoothed it. Then he reached up, loosened his tie, straightened it, and retightened the knot — a full reset, the way one might after a brisk walk. The silk was spotless. The tweed was unmarked. There was not a single drop of blood on him, which was, when one considered the volume of blood currently being spilled on the tarmac, something of a statistical achievement. He checked his watch. Nine forty-three. The tea would be getting cold. Richard was still conscious. He was the only Baron still standing — barely. He had been struck once, across the chest, and his jacket was split open to reveal the shirt beneath, but the cut had been shallow. Deliberately shallow. Arthur had left him conscious on purpose. ”Why?” Richard said. His voice was hoarse. His crimson eyes had dimmed to something closer to rust. ”Why are you doing this? What do you want?” Arthur looked at him with an expression that was not quite pity, not quite boredom, but something in between — the expression of a man who has been asked a question so far beneath his concern that he must physically descend to answer it. ”I want,” Arthur said slowly, ”to finish a chapter of Pride and Prejudice. I was on page one hundred and forty-seven. Elizabeth has just arrived at Netherfield. I would like to know what happens next. That is what I want.” Richard stared at him. His mouth opened. His mouth closed. ”You — you can’t — this isn’t —” ”This is,” Arthur said. ”This very much is. And it is, I’m afraid, over. Unless your employers intend to make it more interesting.” He looked up. Two figures stood on the rooftop of the building opposite — the one Arthur’s first victim had been knocked through. They hadn’t moved during the fight. They hadn’t needed to. They were the reserve. The elite. The two Marquis. They were taller than Barons, thinner, with eyes that burned a deeper shade of crimson. Their energy signatures were different — denser, older, more complex. When they moved, the air around them didn’t just chill; it congealed, as if reality itself were reluctant to accommodate their presence. They had watched the entire battle. Every second of it. And for the first time in their existence — the first time in over five hundred years of unlife — they felt something they had long believed themselves incapable of feeling. Fear. Not the intellectual fear of a threat assessed and noted. The visceral, animal fear — the fear that starts in the gut and climbs. They had watched a man — a single man, armed with one sword and two hands — dismantle fifty-one of their kind in thirty seconds without breaking stride, without breaking a sweat, without even breaking his concentration, because he had been, as far as they could tell from his expression, thinking about something else the entire time. The female Marquis — hair like black water, skin like marble — stood at the roof’s edge. Her fingers were trembling. She clenched them into a fist to stop it. The male Marquis beside her had not spoken since the battle began. His lips were parted slightly, his fangs visible, not in threat but in the involuntary baring of teeth that a cornered animal displays. ”This is impossible,” the male Marquis whispered. ”He is one man.” ”One man does not do this,” the female said. Her voice was steady. Her hands were not. ”This is not mortal power. This is something older.” She raised her right hand. Dark light gathered around her fingers. Not the crude physical enhancement of the lower vampires. Something else. Something that made the blood in the surrounding vampires’ bodies pulse in response, as if called. Blood magic. Arthur tilted his head. His divine sense reached out, examining the structure of the energy she was gathering. It was, he noted with academic interest, an attempt to weaponize her own blood — to crystallize the dark essence within it into a solid form. A blade. A projectile. A construct. Fascinating, he thought. They use their own life force as a weapon. Inefficient, but creative. The formation is crude — something a Qi Condensation student might attempt in their first month — but the principle is sound. I should note this for the Thursday seminar. The Marquis’s eyes met his. She had seen what he’d done to her subordinates. She had watched forty-one vampires and ten Barons dismantled in thirty seconds by a man with one sword and two hands. And she was not afraid. That, Arthur thought, was either very brave or very foolish. In his experience, the two were indistinguishable until the moment of contact. She released the blood magic.
