I Reached Soul Formation, Then the Vampires Declared War

The Barons regrouped.

Arthur watched them through his divine sense as they reformed — a process that took approximately four seconds, which was long enough to tell him several things. First, that the Crimson Court trained its officers in formation recovery. Second, that they had a chain of command that functioned even when the commanding officer — Richard, currently sitting on the pavement with a dazed expression and no memory of the last two minutes — was incapacitated. Third, that they were brave. Stupidly, admirably brave.

Ten Barons. The survivors of the original ten, though ”survivor” was a generous term. Three were missing hands. Two had legs that bent in directions legs shouldn’t bend. One — the one Arthur had told to ”sit down” — was still sitting, his body refusing to obey any contradictory orders. The remaining four were intact, though their energy systems flickered with the instability of systems that had been forcibly shut down and were rebooting.

Ten Barons, each one equivalent to a Golden Core cultivator. In the cultivation world, ten Golden Core cultivators working together could topple a small sect. They could lay siege to a city. They could hold a mountain pass against a Nascent Soul for days.

Arthur had fought Nascent Souls. He had killed three of them, during the war that had driven him from the cultivation world to this mundane one. Ten Golden Cores would have been a Tuesday afternoon.

Richard spoke. He was sitting on the pavement, but his voice still carried the authority of command.

”Combined formation. Blood resonance. All of you — link.”

The Barons moved. Despite their injuries — the severed hands, the broken legs — they shuffled into a pattern that Arthur recognized as a variant of the five-element battle array. Not the cultivation version, of course. A crude adaptation, built on blood-magic principles rather than spiritual energy. But the intent was the same: pool their power into a single, amplified strike.

And they knew. Arthur could see it in their eyes — not through any technique, but through the simple observation of men who had accepted what was coming. The Baron with the shattered leg was using the one beside him as a crutch. The one missing both hands had positioned himself at the array’s centre, offering his core as the conduit, because a Baron without hands could still serve as a battery. They moved with the deliberate, unhurried precision of soldiers writing letters home before a battle they did not expect to survive.

It was, Arthur reflected, genuinely moving. In another life, in another world, he might have recruited them.

They linked. Arthur felt it — a web of dark energy forming between the ten Barons, their individual blood-magic signatures merging, harmonizing, amplifying. The result was... not insignificant. If he were a Foundation Establishment cultivator, he would have been concerned. If he were a Nascent Soul, he would have been mildly inconvenienced.

”Combined Blood Strike,” Aldric said, standing beside the formation. The Marquis had stepped back, his role now that of an observer rather than a combatant. His face was carefully neutral. ”Ten Barons, synchronized. In the history of the Crimson Court, it has been used exactly four times. It has never failed.”

”It won’t fail tonight, either,” Arthur said.

Aldric blinked.

”In the sense that it will accomplish what it’s designed to accomplish,” Arthur clarified. ”It will generate a combined strike of considerable force. The Barons will commit everything they have. The attack will land.” He paused. ”And then I will show you something I haven’t shown you yet.”

The Barons completed their formation. Dark energy pulsed through the web connecting them, building, concentrating, focusing toward Richard — who had risen from the pavement, his injuries apparently overridden by the formation’s power-sharing, his eyes burning with the borrowed strength of his subordinates.

”Fire,” Richard said.

Ten Barons released simultaneously. The combined Blood Strike was not a blade or a lance or a net. It was a wall — a moving front of dark energy, five meters high and fifteen meters wide, that rolled down the street toward Arthur like a tsunami of crystallized blood. It compressed the air in front of it, cracking the tarmac beneath it, shattering the remaining streetlights as it passed. The wall carried the combined killing intent of ten immortal predators who had finally, truly committed to the fight.

Arthur could have blocked it. His qi barrier would have held. The Azure Lotus Sword, flying interception, would have split it. Even his physical body, reinforced as it was by Soul Formation cultivation, would have survived the impact with nothing worse than a torn jacket.

But blocking was not the point.

He had been fighting with his hands — casual, contemptuous touches that un-inverted energy systems and put vampires on the ground. He had let the sword do the cutting. He had demonstrated what his qi could do to blood magic.

He had not yet shown them what a Soul Formation cultivator looked like when he actually used a technique.

Arthur raised his right hand. Palm up. Fingers spread.

Light gathered.

Not the jade-white of the sword. Not the gold of his purification demonstration. This was different. This was blue-white — the colour of lightning captured in a bottle, of storm clouds backlit by their own thunder. It gathered in his palm with a sound like tearing silk, and the air around his hand ionized, crackling, ozone sharp.

Palm Thunder.

The cultivation world had many names for it. Zhangxin Lei. The Thunder of the Palm Heart. Some sects called it the Heavenly Vengeance Hand. Others called it the Sage’s Smite. Arthur’s own tradition — the Azure Lotus lineage — called it Qinglian Zhanglei, the Green Lotus Palm Thunder, because the lightning, when fully formed, took the shape of a lotus flower about to bloom.

The lotus was forming now. Seven petals of blue-white lightning, each one a separate discharge path, each one carrying enough energy to level a building. They were not fused, not blended — seven distinct filaments of lightning, each one tracing its own geometry, each one independent of the others, yet all of them converging into a single flower that sat in Arthur’s palm the way a real lotus sits on still water. Beautiful. Precise. And absolutely, unequivocally lethal. The flower hummed at a frequency that made every vampire within a hundred meters instinctively step backward.

Including Aldric. Including the female Marquis. Including, Arthur noted with amusement, the vampire he had told to ”stay,” who was now standing despite his body’s previous refusal to cooperate, because the instinct to flee from lightning was older than any command a cultivator could give.

The Blood Wall reached him.

Arthur opened his hand.

The lotus bloomed.

The sound was not thunder. Thunder is the sound of air rushing back into the vacuum left by a lightning strike. This was the sound of the lightning itself — a crack, sharp and clean, that split the night from ground to sky. It was followed by a second sound, lower, deeper: the groan of every electrical system in a two-block radius giving up at once. The streetlights didn’t flicker — they exploded, glass raining down in glittering cascades, the sodium vapour inside them igniting in brief orange flashes before the dark swallowed everything. The air itself changed. Ionized. Charged. The hair on every arm within fifty meters stood on end. A static field settled over the street like a blanket, and for a moment, every breath tasted of copper and ozone and something older — the raw, mineral scent of a thunderstorm breaking over open water.

The seven petals discharged simultaneously, seven bolts of blue-white energy that fanned outward in a semicircle, each one finding a target with the precision of a hunting dog.

The Blood Wall didn’t resist. It couldn’t. The Palm Thunder was not qi, not spiritual energy, not the refined power of a cultivator’s dantian. It was law — the fundamental law of the heaven and earth, the rule that said lightning exists, that it strikes, that it destroys. Arthur, at the Soul Formation level, didn’t generate lightning. He invited it. He opened a door in reality, and lightning walked through.

The wall evaporated. The seven bolts passed through where it had been and hit the Barons.

All ten of them.

Each Baron was struck by a separate bolt. The impact was not explosive — there was no fire, no shrapnel, no crater. The lightning entered their bodies through their inverted energy systems — the same dark pathways that carried their blood-magic — and followed those pathways to their core. The dark essence within each Baron, the accumulated power of centuries, lit up like a circuit board hit by a power surge. Their veins glowed blue-white through their skin for a fraction of a second — a map of every corrupted meridian, every twisted channel, every dark pathway they had spent centuries building — before the glow intensified beyond what flesh could contain.

They fell. Not screaming — the lightning had taken their voices first, paralyzing their vocal cords before the pain could register. They fell in unison, ten bodies hitting the pavement in a ragged line, smoke rising from their mouths and eyes and fingertips. The Baron who had served as the formation’s central conduit — the one without hands — was still smoking a full five seconds after the others had gone dark, his body a chimney, his inverted energy system burning itself out like a fuse that had taken the full load. The smell was acrid, chemical — the scent of centuries-old blood essence being incinerated from the inside out. Their inverted energy systems, overloaded by the Palm Thunder, shut down completely.

They were not dead. Arthur was still being precise. But they would not be rising for a very long time. Months, possibly. Long enough for whatever came next to play out without their interference.

The street was quiet.

Arthur closed his hand. The lotus was gone. The lightning was gone. The ozone smell remained, sharp and clean, mixing with the damp London air. His palm was slightly warm, the way a hand gets warm after holding a cup of tea.

He looked at his palm. Then he looked at the ten Barons, smoking gently on the tarmac. Then he looked at the two Marquis, who were standing very still.

”That,” Arthur said, ”is what we call zhangfa in the cultivation world. A palm technique.” He examined his fingernails with the detached interest of a man checking for chipped polish. ”It’s considered a mid-level offensive skill. Students at the Foundation Establishment stage begin learning it — that’s two full realms below me. Children, by our reckoning. I mastered it...” He thought for a moment. ”I think it was during the reign of the Yongle Emperor. Around 1410, by your calendar. I’ve had six centuries to refine it. What you just saw was, if I’m being honest, a somewhat rusty application.”

Aldric’s mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

”You... channelled lightning,” he said. ”Through your hand.”

”I invited it,” Arthur corrected. ”There’s a difference. Your blood magic generates power from within. My techniques access power from without — from the laws that govern the natural world. Lightning is not my weapon. It is a tool that the heavens make available to those who understand the rules.”

The female Marquis took a step back. Then another. Then she turned and walked — not ran, walked, because running would have been an admission she wasn’t ready to make — to the far side of the street, where she stood with her arms wrapped around herself, staring at the smoking Barons.

Arthur’s divine sense pulsed. The signature from the north was closer now — three blocks away, moving fast. Sebastian. The Duke’s energy was dense, dark, compressed — the product of eight centuries of accumulated power. It was, Arthur estimated, roughly equivalent to a Nascent Soul cultivator at the late stage.

In the cultivation world, a late-stage Nascent Soul was considered a regional power. Someone to be respected, to be negotiated with, to be cautious around. They could destroy cities. They could command armies. They could live for a thousand years.

To a Soul Formation cultivator, they were a child with a sharp stick.

Arthur turned to face north. The Azure Lotus Sword floated to his side, its hum deepening, the formation script along its blade glowing brighter. The sword, unlike its master, was looking forward to this.

”I believe your Duke is here,” Arthur said.

The air at the end of the street changed first. It didn’t move — it stopped. The damp London breeze that had been carrying the smell of ozone and smoking vampire simply ceased, as though the atmosphere itself had been told to hold its breath. The temperature dropped. Not gradually, not the way cold comes on an autumn night, but all at once, the way a door opens onto a freezer. Frost crystallized on the remaining car windows. The puddles on the tarmac went still and began to skin over with ice.

Then the dark light gathered. It did not glow — it un-glowed, pulling illumination out of the air, casting shadows that had no source. It thickened, took shape, compressed into a silhouette that resolved, step by step, into a figure. A tall man, broad-shouldered, dressed in a charcoal suit that had no business looking as immaculate as it did at this hour. Sebastian Ashworth, Duke of the London Crimson Court, eight hundred and twelve years old, stood at the corner of Arthur’s street.

He surveyed the aftermath.

Ten Barons, smoking. Forty-one Vampires, scattered across the road and through the buildings like discarded marionettes. Two Marquis — his elite — one standing frozen, the other hugging herself on the far side of the street.

The Duke’s crimson eyes moved across the scene with the slow, methodical attention of a man reading a casualty report. Arthur watched him process it. Watched the micro-expressions — the slight narrowing of the eyes when he saw the Baron missing both hands, still smoking. The fractional tightening of the jaw when his gaze found the female Marquis, who would not look at him. The almost imperceptible pause when he counted the Barons and arrived at ten out of ten, none dead, none functional, all of them reduced to components that would need centuries of rebuilding.

This was, for Sebastian, the equivalent of walking into his home and finding every piece of furniture smashed, every window broken, and a polite note on the kitchen table.

And in the middle of it all, a man in a tweed jacket with a cup of Earl Grey still sitting on his roof.

Sebastian’s crimson eyes found Arthur’s. For a long moment, neither of them moved. The street was silent except for the distant wail of a siren and the soft crackle of a Baron’s still-smouldering sleeve.

”So,” Sebastian said. His voice was low, controlled, the voice of a being who had spent eight centuries learning to never let emotion colour his words. ”You’re the one.”

Arthur looked at him with the mild, scholarly expression of a man examining an interesting specimen. He glanced at the cup of tea on the roof — still warm, by his estimation, thanks to the qi he’d threaded through the ceramic to insulate it. He glanced at the ten smoking Barons. He glanced at Sebastian. Then he placed his hands behind his back in the relaxed posture of a museum guide about to lead a tour.

”I believe I am,” he said. ”Would you like some tea? I have a second cup in the flat. The kettle’s still warm, and I’ve just been reminded that I haven’t had my evening brew yet.”

He gestured toward the rooftop, where the cup of Earl Grey sat in solitary dignity against the chimney, steam still curling from its surface.

”I find that these conversations go better with tea.”
