Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

The private reception hall of the Second Spire was so quiet that the dripping of a water clock sounded like hammer blows.

Crown Prince Raymond was curled up on a low divan in the corner, wrapped in a thick wool blanket despite the mild afternoon weather. His golden armor had been stripped off, leaving him in a rumpled silk under-robe. He stared blankly at his empty hands, his pupils dilated to pinpricks, occasionally whispering terrified nonsense about stars being swallowed by an endless stomach.

Four royal physicians hovered near him, their healing talismans trembling so violently the parchment rattled.

On the other side of the hall, Felix Vance sat at a plain oak table.

He had kicked off his straw slippers, resting his bare feet on the cool floorboards while sipping a chipped mug of lukewarm barley tea. His brass-bound AetherDeck slate lay on the table beside him, screen face-down, resting comfortably within arm’s reach.

”Man, this tea is weak,” Felix murmured, swirling the murky amber liquid. ”They really skimp on the tea leaves in this VIP lounge.”

Beside him, Lyra Ashford stood like a silver statue, her hand resting on the pommel of her rapier.

Her golden eyes monitored the room with razor-sharp vigilance. Every time a servant or junior elder took a breath that was slightly too loud, Lyra’s cold glare snapped in their direction, forcing them to freeze in terrified silence.

The heavy mahogany doors of the reception hall swung open with a muffled groan.

A delegation of nine men shuffled into the room, their heads lowered so far their chins touched their chests.

Leading them was Grand Minister Yan, the First Imperial Chancellor of the High Sun Empire. Behind him walked Grand Chancellor Alistair, Arch-Inquisitor Valen, and six imperial scribes clad in flowing scarlet robes. The scribes carried a colossal velvet-lined cedar chest between them, sweating under its immense physical weight.

Grand Minister Yan stopped ten paces from Felix’s table.

He fell to his knees with a heavy, unceremonious thud, his aged forehead pressing flat against the polished floorboards.

”Lord Vance!” Yan’s voice cracked with overwhelming reverence and thinly veiled panic. ”This old servant brings the absolute, unconditional repentance of the High Sun Imperial Throne! We have witnessed your boundless majesty, and we beg the Primordial Sovereign to forgive our scion’s blind insolence!”

Felix blinked, pausing with his tea mug halfway to his lips.

”Uh, he’s fine,” Felix said, waving a hand toward the shivering prince in the corner. ”He just burned through his mana pool. Give him some sports drinks and eight hours of sleep, and his stamina bar will regenerate.”

Grand Minister Yan’s breath hitched in his throat.

Stamina bar... sports drinks... Yan thought, his mind spinning into terrified overdrive. He speaks of the primordial vitality reserves that sustain the gods! Even after our scion attacked him with ancestral dragon fire, the Sovereign shows boundless celestial mercy!

”Your benevolence knows no limits, Lord Vance!” Yan wept, lifting his head just enough to gesture frantically toward the six scarlet-robed scribes. ”Bring forward the Imperial Covenant! Quickly, you worthless fools!”

The scribes scurried forward like frightened mice, setting the heavy cedar chest upon the table with frantic care.

They unlocked the golden latches and lifted the lid, revealing a massive, accordion-folded document resting on a bed of purple velvet.

The entire treaty was forged from fifty continuous sheets of beaten gold leaf, each plate half an inch thick and inscribed with tens of thousands of microscopic imperial legal runes. The borders were inlaid with crushed astral pearls, and the entire fifty-page accordion was bound with braided crimson dragon-silk cords.

Grand Minister Yan remained on his knees, his hands trembling as he gestured toward the gleaming golden mountain of metal.

”This is the Imperial Covenant of Perpetual Non-Aggression, Absolute Sovereignty, and Eternal Vassalage,” Yan declared solemnly, his voice shaking. ”Fifty pages of binding celestial law, drafted by forty imperial scholars and blessed by the high temples! Within these sacred clauses, the High Sun Empire grants Solitude Spire complete extraterritorial autonomy!”

Felix leaned back in his chair, staring at the colossal stack of golden metal plates with a look of pure, unadulterated dread.

A set of dark, translucent brackets flickered into focus over the golden accordion:

This book’s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

【Item: Imperial Covenant of Perpetual Non-Aggression】 【Grade: 50-Page Legal Bureaucracy Artifact】 【Inspector Note: Contains 48,000 words of dense imperial legalese, indemnity clauses, and tax exemptions. Basically a mobile app Terms of Service agreement. Nobody reads this garbage. Scroll to the bottom and click agree.】

Felix groaned aloud, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes.

Fifty pages of micro-text on solid gold sheets. Just looking at the dense runic characters made his brain hurt. It was identical to the hundred-page End-User License Agreements that software companies forced players to scroll through before launching an online game.

”Fifty pages?” Felix muttered, shaking his head. ”Are you kidding me? Who has time to read all that?”

Grand Minister Yan froze, cold sweat breaking out across his wrinkled neck.

”Lord Vance!” Yan gasped, his voice trembling. ”Every clause was drafted with the utmost reverence!”

Page seven outlines your permanent exemption from all imperial tolls! Page fourteen grants you ownership of twelve mineral mountains in the western skies!

”Page twenty-eight establishes an annual tribute of five million high-grade spirit crystals, three hundred barrels of celestial honey, and eighty bolts of cloud-silk!”

Yan swallowed hard, his hands clasped in frantic pleading.

”If any clause offends your Dao heart, we shall rewrite it immediately!” Yan cried. ”Please, divine Sovereign, inspect the sacred terms!”

”No way,” Felix said flatly. ”Nobody reads the Terms of Service. It’s always the same generic boilerplate junk anyway.”

Felix reached out with both hands and grabbed the front cover of the fifty-page golden accordion.

With a rapid, dismissive flick of his thumbs, he began fanning through the heavy gold sheets like a dealer shuffling a deck of cards.

Clack-clack-clack-clack-clack!

The heavy gold leaves flipped past in a blinding metallic blur. Felix didn’t look at the text.

He didn’t read a single word about mineral rights, tax exemptions, or imperial tributes. He kept fanning through the metal plates, his eyes focused entirely on the bottom right corner, hunting for the signature field.

Clack-clack-clack!

Page thirty-eight. Page forty-four. Page forty-nine.

Thump.

Felix reached page fifty.

At the bottom of the final golden leaf, framed by intricate dragon carvings and inlaid ruby filigree, was a wide, blank rectangular box meant for an imperial blood seal, a sovereign soul brand, or an ancestral drop of divine ichor.

”There it is,” Felix muttered. ”The bottom of the page.”

Grand Minister Yan, Arch-Inquisitor Valen, and the six scribes stared at Felix with wide, bloodshot eyes.

Their breath caught in their chests.

They expected the young sovereign to summon a terrifying column of void fire, or perhaps pierce his own finger to mark the gold with a drop of star-essence that would burn through the floorboards.

Instead, Felix reached into the breast pocket of his frayed gray tunic.

He rummaged around for a moment, pushing aside a dried plum pit and a crumpled tea wrapper, before pulling out a two-inch stub of a chewed graphite pencil.

The wooden casing was dented with teeth marks, and the lead point was blunt and rounded.

Felix leaned over the fifty-page golden treaty, pressed the blunt graphite lead against the flawless, beaten gold leaf, and casually dragged the tip across the signature box.

Skrrrt.

He made one diagonal slash from top-left to bottom-right.* Skrrrt.*

He crossed it with a second diagonal slash from top-right to bottom-left.

A plain, crooked, uneven pencil ’X’ sat squarely in the middle of the imperial covenant’s sacred signature line.

Felix pulled his hand back, blew a stray speck of gray graphite dust off the gold, and shoved the pencil stub back into his tunic pocket.

He slid the fifty-page golden accordion across the oak table, pushing it toward the kneeling minister with a dull scraping sound.

”Yeah, whatever,” Felix said, waving his hand toward the door. ”I agree to the terms and conditions.”

The privacy policy looks fine. Now can I go?

”I’ve got offline timers running on my cabbage patch and my tea is getting cold.”

The entire room fell into a silence so deep you could hear the dust motes falling through the air.

Grand Minister Yan slowly reached out, his trembling fingers taking hold of the heavy golden sheet.

His eyes locked onto the two crossing lines of dull gray carbon.

Beside him, the six imperial scribes leaned forward, their spectacles slipping down their noses as they examined the mark. Arch-Inquisitor Valen’s knees went weak, and he slumped against the doorframe, gasping for breath.

”The... the mark...” Yan whispered, tears welling in his aged eyes.

”What is it, Minister?” one of the scribes squeaked, his voice choked with awe. ”Is it an ancient spatial seal?”

”No... it is far greater...” Yan choked out, a sob tearing through his chest. ”It is the Sacred Sovereign Rune of Harmony!”

Yan held the golden plate aloft, his hands shaking with holy ecstasy.

”Look upon its divine geometry!” Yan proclaimed to the weeping scribes. ”Two strokes!”

Two paths across the infinite cosmos that meet at a single, perfect intersection of absolute cosmic equilibrium! The first stroke descends from the astral firmament; the second rises from the terrestrial depths!

”Where they cross, all conflict dissolves into eternal stillness!”

The scribes fell to their knees, weeping and knocking their heads against the floorboards.

”He refused to use blood!” Yan cried, clutching the gold leaf to his heart. ”For blood is mortal and fleeting, bound by petty flesh! He refused to carve it with a blade, for blades know only slaughter! Instead, he manifested the mark using pure, unrefined earth-carbon, reminding the High Sun Empire that even the mightiest emperors are born from the dust of the soil!”

”Boundless wisdom!” the scribes sobbed in unison. ”The Sovereign has granted us the Rune of Crossroads! The High Sun Empire is saved!”

By the doorway, Lyra Ashford crossed her arms, her chin tilted high with immense, aristocratic pride.

Senior Brother’s profundity is truly endless, Lyra thought, her heart swelling with quiet reverence. With a simple flick of ordinary earth-carbon, he dismantled ten thousand years of arrogant imperial legalism. He reduced forty thousand words of mortal pride into a single crossroad of cosmic peace.

Meanwhile, Felix had already slipped his feet back into his straw slippers.

He picked up his brass AetherDeck from the table, tucking it securely into his loose sleeve, and shuffled toward the reception hall exit.

As he walked past the weeping minister and the kneeling scribes, he shook his head and let out a tired mutter.

”Man, software agreements are getting weirder every year,” Felix grumbled, pushing open the heavy mahogany doors. ”At least on my old phone I could just tap ’Accept All’ without having to find a pencil.”
