Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

The afternoon breeze drifting across the Seventh Spire was warm, fragrant, and delightfully quiet.

Lyra Ashford knelt carefully in the garden dirt. She held a small brass watering can with both hands.

Before her stood the prize of the harvest: the five-star Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

The cabbage had grown as large as a carriage wheel. Its jade outer leaves glowed with soft golden light that suppressed weeds. Every breath of wind that rustled its petals released a faint aroma of honey and roasted sunlight.

Lyra checked the soil moisture with the tip of her index finger, nodding with solemn devotion.

The sacred cabbage is thriving, Lyra thought. She felt proud despite dirt smudges on her apron. Senior Brother entrusted me with the agricultural foundation of the Solitude Dao. If a single aphid dares alight upon these leaves, my rapier shall cut it into twelve equal pieces.

Two weeks ago, she had been a desperate fugitive. She had fled through eastern mountains with bloodstained armor.

Now, she was the official groundskeeper of the most terrifying cosmic recluse in the mortal realm. Her torn meridians had completely healed. Breathing ambient energy from the cottage had restored her a dry yawn drifted through the open kitchen window, followed by the clatter of a wooden spoon.

Felix Vance stepped out onto the porch, squinting against the bright three o’clock glare.

Felix wore his rumpled gray tunic and straw slippers. His loose trousers looked entirely too comfortable for an academy.

In his left hand, he held a chipped mug of cold jasmine tea. In his right, he cradled his cracked obsidian slate.

Barnaby the clockwork owl sat on his cedar perch beside the doorway, as motionless as a brass doorstop. The black rubber stopper remained firmly wedged into his open beak, silencing his pompous morning lectures. Only the faint, furious ticking of internal copper gears betrayed his continued consciousness.

Felix leaned his hip against the weathered porch railing and took a sip of tea.

”Cabbage looks big,” Felix observed mildy, scratching the back of his neck. ”Might be time to harvest some outer leaves for dinner. Pickled pork and stir-fried cabbage sounds pretty solid.”

Lyra’s heart leaped into her throat.

Harvesting the Primordial Sun-Lotus for dinner?! she screamed inwardly, her hands clutching the watering can so hard her knuckles turned white. That vegetable contains enough pure True Yang essence to elevate a mortal straight into the Astral Knight realm! And Senior Brother wants to fry it with salted pork like common turnip greens!

”As Senior Brother commands!” Lyra responded out loud, bowing deeply from her knees. ”This disciple shall select only the most spiritually balanced leaves!”

Felix gave her a slow, sideways glance.

”Just pick two from the bottom,” he muttered, shaking his head. ”They’re just leaves, Lyra. You don’t need to hold a funeral service for them.”

He looked down at the brass-framed screen in his hands and pressed his thumb to the center groove.

The amber runes lit up instantly, displaying the familiar retro interface:

Felix smiled faintly, nodding in approval.

”Five million idle watts,” he murmured under his breath. ”Passive generation is really ramping up since I condensed that starter planet in my chest. If this keeps scaling, I can afford the automatic watering sprinkler upgrade by next Tuesday.”

He checked the small pocket watch icon in the upper-right corner of the slate.

It was 2:54 PM.

His sacred afternoon nap window was rapidly approaching. The rope hammock strung between the iron-wood pines was swaying gently in the mountain breeze, practically begging for his presence.

”Perfect timing,” Felix said, tucking the AetherDeck into his loose sleeve. ”Ten more minutes of porch breeze, and then it’s time to log off for two hours. Nap stamina bonus is real.”

Then, the world went dark.

This was neither a gradual fading of daylight nor an ordinary rainstorm.

The sky above the Seventh Spire was violently blotted out. It looked like a giant hand covered the sun.

A deep, bone-rattling thrum vibrated through the earth. The flagstones trembled beneath Lyra’s knees. The mountain air turned freezing and smelled of scorched steel.

Lyra’s breath seized. She dropped the watering can and sprang up. Her hand flew instinctively to her mithril rapier.

High above the clouds, twelve titanic shadows broke through the mist.

Colossal sky-galleons emerged from the clouds. These ironclads were built strictly for continental conquest.

Each warship measured over three hundred yards from stem to stern, armored in plates of midnight-blue star-steel and dragon-bone laminate. Massive mana-turbines roared along their flanks, churning the clouds into swirling funnels of black exhaust.

Enormous crimson banners whipped in the wind atop triple-masts. They bore a descending golden hawk.

The Ashford Imperial Clan.

Lyra felt all the blood drain from her face.

”The Vanguard Armada...” she whispered, her voice shaking with horror.

”The First Fleet of the High Sun Empire... They didn’t just send hunting squads. Uncle mobilized the entire Western Sky Squadron.”

THUD!

THUD!

THUD!

Four colossal obsidian anchors plunged downward from lead ships. Red suppression chains bound them to temple pillars.

They slammed into the rocky perimeter of the Seventh Spire, digging deep into the floating island’s stone foundation.

Instantly, crimson runic arrays flared to life along the chains, shooting spiderwebs of blood-red light into the sky. A massive hexagonal forcefield snapped shut over the peak. It sealed off the airspace completely.

Three miles away, across the void gap, the Radiant Dawn Academy erupted into utter chaos.

Bells began tolling frantically from the Solar Peak and the Blade Spire. Thousands of outer disciples gathered on balconies, pointing in terror at the dreadnoughts hovering over the Seventh Spire. Grand elders rushed out of their sanctums in silk robes, their faces pale as parchment.

”Imperial Dreadnoughts!” an elder shouted from the distant observatory. ”Why has the High Sun Empire deployed a battlefleet within the academy’s neutral skies?!”

”Look at the flags!” another elder cried.

”It is Lord Balthazar Ashford! The Imperial Grand Admiral himself! They have blockaded Solitude Spire!”

Aboard the flagship Iron Sovereign, heavy blast doors opened with a hiss of steam.

Dozens of elite battle-mages in crimson plate armor marched onto the main deck, their halberds crackling with suppressive lightning.

On the command dais stood a broad-shouldered man. He wore ornate gold-trimmed armor.

His silver hair was tied in a knot beneath a gilded helm. A crimson mantle billowed behind him.

Across his waist hung a massive greatsword whose scabbard was carved from the fang of a leviathan.

Lyra stared upward, her teeth chattering with cold dread.

”Uncle Balthazar...” she breathed.

Beside her, Felix leaned on the porch railing. He sipped lukewarm jasmine tea while looking up.

He squinted, looking mildly inconvenienced by the sudden shade.

”Huh,” Felix muttered, tilting his chin. ”That’s a lot of metal. Did the academy order a delivery of surplus scrap iron?”

A semi-transparent black bracket materialized above the armored figure standing on the flagship’s deck:

【Target: Fleet Admiral Balthazar Ashford】 【Cultivation: Grand Inquisitor Tier 6 (Peak Astral Blade Stage)】 【Affiliation: Ashford Imperial Clan / High Sun Navy Commander】 【Threat Level: Annoying Cutscene Boss】 【Status: Extremely Arrogant / Mildly Balding Beneath Helmet】 【Inspector Note: Has prepared a twenty-minute villainous monologue about family honor and imperial treason. Highly prone to grandstanding. Recommend pressing the ’Skip Cutscene’ button before your tea gets cold.】

Felix blinked at the floating text.

”A cutscene boss?” Felix murmured, taking a small slurp of his tea.

”Man, the server events in this game have zero pacing. I literally have six minutes before my nap starts.”

Up on the flagship, Balthazar Ashford stepped toward the brass ship-horn mounted at the bow.

His ruthless gaze swept across the ragged pines and vegetable garden. His lip curled in venomous contempt.

To the admiral, this floating rock was just an embarrassing scrap heap. A traitorous niece hid among peasants here.

Balthazar raised his gauntleted hand, channeling a surge of crushing Astral Mana into the ship’s acoustic amplification array.

When he spoke, his voice boomed across the sky like rolling thunder, shaking the very pine needles from the trees.

”Lyra Ashford!” the admiral roared, his words echoing across the seven peaks of the academy.

”You have fled the judgment of your bloodline for three weeks! You have stolen the Sovereign Sky-Compass and brought dishonor to the imperial court!”

The force of the acoustic blast pushed against the cottage, making the loose cedar roof shingles rattle.

”Today, your childish rebellion ends!” Balthazar bellowed.

”Step forth in chains, surrender the compass, and prostrate yourself before the imperial throne! Refuse, and this entire floating wasteland shall be reduced to molten glass!”

The crimson runes along the suppression chains flared violently, locking the island in an iron grip.

Lyra turned toward Felix, her eyes brimming with panic, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

”Senior Brother...” she whispered, her hands shaking as she reached for her weapon.

”They... they brought an entire armada for me.”

Felix glanced down at his pocket watch icon.

It was 2:56 PM.

He looked at the sky-galleons, then down at his empty teacup, his expression completely blank.

”Why do public event bosses always spawn right before maintenance?” Felix sighed wearily, turning back toward the kitchen door. ”I just wanted to take a twenty-minute power nap.”
