Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

The afternoon sun over Solitude Spire was warm, drowsy, and quiet.

Down in the overgrown front yard, the legendary Sun-Lotus Cabbage was in full bloom. Its golden, translucent leaves opened slowly toward the sky, soaking in the ambient solar rays and shedding a faint, sweet aroma of crisp garden greens.

A few paces away, Felix Vance sat reclined in a canvas lawn chair under the broad shade of an ancient persimmon tree.

His eyes were closed. His faded gray tunic was unbuttoned at the collar, and his feet rested comfortably atop an overturned vegetable crate.

Beside his chair stood a rough-hewn wooden picnic table.

The table had been crooked for three years because the left rear leg was two inches shorter than the rest. To fix the issue, Felix had wedged a heavy, dark square of polished obsidian under the short leg.

That obsidian block was the Sovereign Heart Seal—the supreme imperial relic capable of suppressing nine heavenly dynasties. Right now, it functioned with ninety-nine percent efficiency as a table leveler.

Sitting atop the balanced table was a frosted glass pitcher of iced mountain peach tea.

Next to the pitcher sat Felix’s cracked handheld console, its amber display glowing in idle sleep mode:

Up on the porch beam, Barnaby the Clockwork Owl stood on his favorite brass perch.

The black rubber stopper remained hammered firmly into his beak, sealing his vocal valves into absolute silence. Clutched tightly in his three brass talons was the cold copper coin.

Whenever a mountain breeze ruffled his brass feathers, his internal gears ticked with a faint, rhythmic rattle: tick-tick-click.

Barnaby glared out at the front gate with unblinking amber crystal eyes. He was thoroughly convinced that every living thing in the lower realm was conspiring to disturb his dignified existence.

Across the lawn, Lyra Ashford stepped out of the cottage kitchen, carrying a fresh bowl of crushed ice cubes.

She wore a simple white linen robe, her blonde hair tied back with a blue silk ribbon. Seeing Felix resting so peacefully, she slowed her footsteps, placing each foot down with delicate precision so as not to disturb the cosmic silence.

Senior Brother’s cultivation has reached the state of Return to Simplicity, Lyra thought, her heart swelling with reverence. He sits beneath a common fruit tree, yet his breathing synchronizes with the rotation of the heavens. He uses the supreme Sovereign Heart Seal to level a tea table, treating the throne of empires as mere kindling support! What unfathomable detachment!

She reached the picnic table, gently adding three clean ice cubes to Felix’s glass.

Felix didn’t open his eyes, but a lazy smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

”Thanks, Lyra,” he murmured. ”Proper ice ratio is critical. If the tea gets lukewarm, the whole afternoon is ruined.”

”This servant understands,” Lyra replied softly, bowing from the waist. ”Maintaining the harmony of your beverage is this disciple’s highest duty.”

Before Felix could sink back into his nap, the sky above the Seventh Spire turned bright gold.

HONNNNNK! HONNNNNK!

A blaring, concussive fanfare of twin imperial dragon-horns shattered the mountain peace.

The sheer sonic force rattled the cottage roof tiles, sending two nesting mountain swallows screeching into the sky.

Felix’s left eyelid twitched.

”Are you kidding me?” he mumbled, his voice dripping with tired grievance. ”Who brings brass horns to a residential mountain zone? Doesn’t this academy have a noise ordinance?”

Lyra’s gaze hardened. She snapped her head toward the clouds, her slender hand instantly dropping to the hilt of her rapier.

Ripping through the cloud cover three hundred feet above the lawn was a colossal flying vehicle.

It was an imperial Sun-Drakon Sky-Chariot, crafted entirely from auric dragon-gold and banded with heavy plates of celestial jade. Hovering on eight anti-gravity repulsor rings, the vehicle measured forty feet from nose to stern.

Harnessed to the front of the gilded chariot were four magnificent Celestial Scale-Drakes.

Each drake was thirty feet long, covered in iridescent golden scales that radiated searing heat. They snorted sulfurous smoke through their nostrils, their claws tearing through the mountain wind as they pulled the heavy carriage forward.

Floating along the flanks of the chariot were twelve Imperial Sky-Guards, clad in golden full-plate armor and wielding eight-foot halberds woven with imperial dragon-fire.

Standing proudly atop the open observation deck of the chariot was a tall, sharp-featured man with an aristocratic sneer.

He wore the opulent, high-collared crimson robes of a Senior Inspector from the Central Ministry of Revenue and Celestial Assets. Around his neck hung an eight-pound necklace of carved sovereign-jade, and on his head rested a towering magistrate’s hat bound with golden tassels.

This was Imperial Inspector Lord Sterling.

Felix squinted up through the tree leaves, tilting his chin.

A translucent system bracket materialized over the hovering chariot:

【Target: Imperial Inspector Lord Sterling】 【Affiliation: High Sun Empire (Ministry of Revenue)】 【Cultivation: Eighth-Tier Golden Core Magistrate】 【Current Status: Overinflated Ego / Bureaucratic Delusion】 【Threat Level: Negligible (Can be swatted with basic household footwear)】

Felix let out a low groan.

”Great. A tax collector with flying lizards,” Felix muttered, pulling his straw hat down over his eyes. ”Tell him the office is closed on Tuesdays.”

”Senior Brother,” Lyra whispered, her voice cold and sharp as frozen steel. ”Lord Sterling is the third cousin of the Imperial Chancellor. He is infamous throughout the capital for confiscating the estates of fallen noble houses under the pretense of imperial audits.”

Up in the chariot, Lord Sterling looked down at Solitude Spire with profound disgust.

He held a golden looking-glass to his right eye, surveying the peak.

He saw an overgrown yard choked with dandelions and giant cabbages. He saw a crooked wooden shack with warped pine siding and a rusted tin mailbox.

He saw a girl he recognized as Lyra Ashford, the runaway sword prodigy of the noble Ashford Clan, dressed like an ordinary scullery maid and serving tea to a bum in hemp pajamas.

And in the center of the weeds, stacked like worthless firewood, were the thirty-two glowing spirit-jade tribute chests that Admiral Balthazar had abandoned two weeks ago.

Sterling’s thin lips curled into a predatory sneer.

”Absurd,” Sterling scoffed, his aristocratic voice amplified by an enchanted jade megaphone that echoed across the entire valley. ”The rumors from the frontier claimed a Primordial Void Sovereign had descended upon this peak! They claimed an invincible immortal wiped out forty siege cannons with a single breath!”

He gestured with his gold-ringed fingers toward the limp figure in the canvas chair.

”Look at this! A mortal academy dropout lounging in common hemp rags! A derelict peak littered with scrap! Admiral Balthazar’s wits must have rotted from mountain wine to be frightened away by such cheap parlor tricks!”

One of the golden drake-guards stepped forward, saluting with his halberd.

”Lord Inspector, shall we deploy the suppression net and apprehend the deserter Lyra Ashford?”

”Not yet,” Sterling sneered, adjusting his towering magistrate hat. ”First, we execute the supreme imperial prerogative. Everything on this floating rock belongs to the Son of Heaven!”

Sterling reached into the embroidered sleeve of his crimson robe and pulled out a heavy scroll of dragon-silk.

With a flick of his wrist, the scroll unfurled. It burned with blazing golden characters that hovered thirty feet wide in the open sky:

[IMPERIAL REVENUE WRIT: EMINENT SEIZURE OF UNREGISTERED ASSETS]

”By order of the Central Imperial Ministry!” Sterling bellowed, his voice vibrating with the full weight of an Eighth-Tier Golden Core magistrate. ”The territory known as Solitude Spire has engaged in illegal hoarding of strategic celestial resources!”

He pointed his golden scroll straight at the cottage porch.

”The thirty-two tribute chests of the Ashford Fleet are hereby confiscated for the Imperial War Treasury! The peak itself is condemned and annexed by imperial decree! And you—Felix Vance!”

Sterling glared down at the canvas chair.

”You are charged with grand treason, impersonating a celestial sovereign, and practicing unregistered atmospheric sorcery! Disarm your wards, cast aside your slippers, and crawl forward on your knees to receive the imperial fetters!”

The four Celestial Scale-Drakes roared in unison, spewing twin jets of golden dragon-fire into the skybox to emphasize the proclamation.

The twelve imperial guards lowered their halberds, locking their killing intent onto the quiet yard.

Down below, Lyra Ashford stepped forward onto the grass. Her silver rapier cleared its scabbard with a crisp, lethal ring.

”Lord Sterling!” Lyra shouted, her voice ringing with the pride of a high noble. ”You stand upon the sacred sanctuary of Solitude Spire! Withdraw your chariot and retract your blasphemous words this instant, or not even your cousin the Chancellor will be able to collect your ashes from the clouds!”

Sterling threw back his head and laughed, a mocking, high-pitched bray that grated on the ears.

”Little girl,” Sterling sneered down at her. ”You have spent too much time playing house with this peasant! Do you believe your Ashford Clan still holds sway in the imperial court? Your fleet disgraced the throne! When I return to the capital with your prisoner chains and these thirty-two treasure chests, the Emperor will reward me with your family’s ancestral estates!”

Sterling raised his right hand, signaling his drake-guards.

”Guards! Land the chariot on the front lawn! Trample those weeds, smash that wooden shack to splinters, and drag both traitors before my feet in iron chains!”

”Understood!” the twelve drake-guards chorused.

The golden Sky-Chariot angled downward, its anti-gravity rings roaring with deafening mechanical hums as the four scale-drakes clawed through the air, descending straight toward the flowerbeds.

Beneath the persimmon tree, Felix Vance slowly lifted his straw hat off his forehead.

He looked at his frosted glass of peach tea.

Because of the roaring dragon-engines and the thundering horns, a tiny ripple was vibrating across the surface of the tea.

Felix looked at the approaching golden chariot.

His face was completely devoid of anger, fear, or drama. He simply wore the deeply exhausted, profoundly irritated expression of a man whose weekend nap had been interrupted by a leaf blower outside his bedroom window.

”Unbelievable,” Felix muttered, letting out a weary breath. ”Why does every bureaucrat in this world have a megaphone? I just wanted to finish my drink in peace.”
