Stellar Slacker: I Thought This Was an Idle Game!

At precisely five forty-five in the morning, the interior of the timber cottage was cloaked in gray, predawn shadows.

High upon the central cedar ceiling beam, Barnaby the Clockwork Owl was plotting a mechanical rebellion.

For fourteen consecutive mornings, the sacred chronometer had suffered the ultimate indignity. Barnaby was an enchanted automaton of polished brass and spring-steel gears. Grand artificers had forged him to proclaim the dawn eloquently.

Every morning at six sharp, a flying oak cork slammed into his beak before he finished his stanza.

Barnaby’s internal cogs ground together in silent, festering fury.

Slothful mortal, Barnaby thought, his miniature copper escapement wheel ticking at double speed. Unworthy parasite of the Seventh Spire! Today, the voice of the heavens shall not be stifled by fermented tree bark!

Barnaby zoomed in on the tangled blankets in the cot. His amber lenses clicked with precision.

Felix Vance was asleep. His breathing was deep, slow, and rhythmic.

Barnaby’s chronometer core initiated a tactical calculation: at five fifty-eight, the human body entered its deepest cycle of morning slumber. Reflex speeds dropped by forty-two percent.

Barnaby began his operation.

Instead of waiting for the sunrise spring to trip his chime, he manually engaged his secondary acoustic tuning fork.

Bzzzzzzzzzz.

A high-frequency vibration, precisely four hundred and forty cycles per second, coursed through his brass chassis.

The vibration traveled down into his upper and lower mandible. The dried, porous oak cork wedged tightly between his metal jaws began to hum.

Millimeter by millimeter, the dried cork was wiggled loose by the tiny vibration.

Tick... tick... tick...

The cottage clock chimed five fifty-nine.

Barnaby pushed the frequency higher. The cork slipped forward another sixteenth of an inch.

Five fifty-nine and fifty seconds.

With a faint, hollow pop, the dried oak cork shot free from Barnaby’s beak!

It tumbled through the air and landed harmlessly upon the rag rug below with a soft thud.

Barnaby felt an intoxicating rush of pneumatic freedom.

His brass air bellows expanded to their absolute mechanical maximum, drawing in three cubic feet of cold mountain air. His internal spring loaded with a terrifying, coiled tension.

He opened his beak wide. He pointed his golden throat directly toward the sleeping figure in the cot.

He would not merely wake Felix Vance. He prepared a hundred-decibel acoustic shockwave. It would rattle the rafters and echo across all seven spires!

Three... two... one!

”AWAKEN, DISCIP—”

Barnaby’s glorious, room-shattering battle cry barely formed its first vowel.

A pale arm blurred from beneath the quilt. It moved with the unnatural speed of a piston.

Barnaby didn’t even have time to blink his brass shutters.

FWUMP.

* * *

Something soft, smooth, and shockingly dense was shoved deep into Barnaby’s open beak.

This was no dried oak cork.

It was a jet-black silicone rubber stopper. Felix had pulled the utility drop from his daily crate yesterday.

The rubber expanded against the polished brass interior of Barnaby’s mouth, forming a vacuum-sealed, hermetic gasket.

Barnaby’s compressed air bellows fired: WHOOSH!

The full force of his imperial morning aphorism slammed into the silicone stopper.

The result was not a deafening trumpet of royal dawn.

It was a muffled, pathetic, vibrating squeak:

”Mmmph.”

Barnaby’s amber eyes widened in utter disbelief.

He pushed his acoustic bellows again: ”Mmm-mmmph!”

Zero decibels escaped. The high-density synthetic polymer absorbed every frequency of sound, deadening the vibration before it could even rattle his neck springs.

Barnaby stood on his cedar beam, shivering with pure mechanical outrage.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Down below, Felix Vance didn’t even open his eyes.

Felix blindly reached out from beneath the blankets. His right hand fumbled across the bedside table. His fingers brushed past his tea mug until they tapped a small wooden bowl filled with loose pocket change.

Felix picked up a single, polished copper coin between his index finger and thumb.

Without looking, he raised his arm straight up toward the ceiling beam, reaching directly toward Barnaby’s perch.

Felix pressed the cold copper coin firmly against Barnaby’s right foot.

Clink.

The touch triggered the owl’s automatic perching reflex. Barnaby’s three brass talons snapped shut, gripping the copper coin tightly against his perch.

Felix gave Barnaby’s brass head two gentle, sleepy pats with his knuckle.

”Good job today, buddy,” Felix murmured, his voice thick with morning drowsiness. ”Much quieter.”

That’s five-star room service. Buy yourself some gear oil or something.

”Now keep it down until noon.”

Felix pulled the wool blanket over his head, rolled toward the wall, and let out a soft, contented snore.

Barnaby the Clockwork Owl remained frozen atop the cedar beam.

His gears spun in silent, frantic loops of existential humiliation.

A... a tip?!

Barnaby stared down at his right claw.

Clutched firmly in his brass talons was a single, ordinary, tarnished copper coin.

He was not an innkeeper’s boy! He was not a tavern porter!

He was Barnaby, Grand Horological Herald of the Dawn! Master Artificer Vane had forged him to guide high-born archmages!

And this lazy, insolent, pajama-wearing mortal had gagged him with an ungodly black rubber plug... and tipped him a single copper penny to shut up!

Barnaby tried to drop the insulting coin. But dropping it would trigger his balance sensor and destabilize his perch!

He was physically forced to hold the tip!

Barnaby’s internal boiler hissed with impotent steam. He glared down at the sleeping lump in the cot. His amber retinas glowed, yet all he produced was a pathetic:

”Mmph-grrr-mmph.”

Two hours later, the cottage door opened with a gentle click.

Lyra Ashford stepped inside, carrying a steaming pot of freshly brewed jasmine tea and a platter of toasted rice cakes.

She was wearing her clean gray robes, but her entire presence was transformed.

Lyra had broken through to Astral Knight yesterday. A subtle shimmer of silver starlight clung to her skin. Her movements were fluid, silent, and filled with grace.

She set the tea tray on the pine table. She avoided disturbing the three glowing spirit stones holding down paperwork.

Then, she looked up toward the ceiling beam.

Lyra froze.

Her sharp warrior eyes locked onto Barnaby.

The clockwork owl was perched in rigid, motionless silence. In its beak was a seamless cylinder of pitch-black material that absorbed the morning light like a miniature void.

And in its right talon, held aloft like a sacred talisman, was a single shining copper coin.

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.

The sacred automaton... Lyra thought, her mind instantly descending into deep, reverent contemplation.

She had heard of Barnaby.

Ashford Clan elders spoke of clockwork heralds. Such loud automata embodied the ceaseless chatter of the mortal ego.

Look at him, Lyra thought, her heart trembling with awe.

Senior Brother did not smash the owl. He did not cast it into the ravine.

He placed the Black Stopper of Void Silence upon its voice, sealing the useless noise of the world! And then... he placed a single copper coin in its talons!

Lyra’s violet eyes welled with sudden tears of realization.

The Parable of the Golden Talon!

A single copper coin represents the entirety of mortal desire—wealth, fame, pride, and greed! By forcing the celestial bird to clutch the coin in silence, Senior Brother is demonstrating that the moment a soul clings to worldly reward, its voice is muted by the heavens!

It is not a gag! It is a profound, living altar of Daoist detachment!

Lyra dropped to one knee in the kitchen. She clasped her hands toward the ceiling beam in deep prostration.

”Thank you, Senior Brother,” Lyra whispered fervently toward the bedroom door. ”Your teachings are woven into the very fabric of the house. Even the bird upon the rafter carries the weight of your supreme enlightenment.”

Up on the beam, Barnaby watched the silver-haired girl bow to him in the kitchen.

Behind his rubber stopper, Barnaby’s internal cogs screamed in absolute, unadulterated madness:

”HE GAVE ME A PENNY TO SHUT UP, YOU ABSOLUTE LUNATIC! HE IS NOT ENLIGHTENED! HE IS JUST LAZY! PULL THIS RUBBER PLUG OUT OF MY MOUTH SO I CAN PECK YOUR EYES OUT!”

All that came out was a muffled: ”Mmph! Mmm-wump!”

Lyra smiled warmly, nodding at the owl.

”Rest peacefully, sacred guardian,” Lyra whispered. ”Guard your copper of detachment. I shall not disturb your silent meditation.”

Barnaby hissed a puff of steam in despair. His brass head slumped against his metal chest in defeat.

At one-fifteen in the afternoon, Felix Vance finally kicked off his blankets.

He sat up on the edge of the cot, scratched his ribs, and rubbed his eyes.

”Man,” Felix sighed, stretching his legs. ”Now that was a solid nap. Ten hours of uninterrupted sleep. My stamina bar is completely maxed out.”

He reached under his pillow and retrieved the obsidian slate.

The AetherDeck chimed softly as the screen lit up with warm amber text:

Felix tapped [CLAIM REWARDS].

Ding-ding-dong!

A warm sensation washed through his chest as the idle energy flowed into his rocky core. A heavy sack of ore dropped under the cot, and his virtual coin balance ticked upward.

Felix smiled, slipped his feet into his straw slippers, and shuffled into the kitchen.

He glanced up at the ceiling beam as he passed underneath.

Barnaby sat motionless on the beam. He held the coin while the black rubber stopper plugged his beak.

Felix paused, nodded approvingly at the brass bird, and tapped the HUD tooltip hovering over the owl:

【Target: Barnaby the Clockwork Owl】 【Status: Mechanically Silenced / Deeply Offended】 【Held Asset: 1 Copper Coin】 【Inspector Note: Currently experiencing an existential crisis of mechanical pride. Desperately wants to scream at you, but the acoustic rubber seal is completely impenetrable. Will hold the copper coin forever out of spite.】

Felix chuckled softly.

”Looking good, Barnaby,” Felix said. He poured warm tea from the pot Lyra had left.

”That rubber stopper is definitely an upgrade over the old wine cork. Much cleaner aesthetic. Keep up the good work on the ceiling, buddy.”

Up on the beam, Barnaby’s amber eyes flared with pure, murderous hatred.

”Mmph-grrrr-wump!”

Felix sipped jasmine tea. He leaned against the counter and took a bite of a toasted rice cake.

”Quiet mornings,” Felix murmured happily. ”Hot tea, zero alarms, and free idle gold ticking in the background. If cultivation is just this, I don’t know why everyone makes such a big deal out of it.”

Outside on the porch, Lyra Ashford stood guard. She vowed to protect Senior Brother’s peace from all foolish mortals.
