Algorithm system

chatMusk’s words continued, ”Lin, do you know? We have high hopes for AI. We hope that one day AGI will be born. Then we can rely on this advanced big guy to achieve the same crushing dominance that industrial civilization had over agricultural civilization...”

Lin Yuan naturally understood what ”AGI” meant. AGI refers to Artificial General Intelligence.

The AGI Musk referred to, in expanded terms, meant applying AI to all industries, especially in scientific research. The most prominent examples are in the field of biomolecular deconstruction research—those areas with established paths and paradigms but requiring a large input of highly intelligent human labor. These fields are most suitable for AI to excel.

When AI, relying on its powerful computing capabilities, crushes human brains in scientific research, and when AI solves those scientific problems that have plagued humanity, isn’t that exactly achieving the same crushing dominance that industrial civilization had over agricultural civilization?

It can be said that Eagleland’s current national policy is to frantically upgrade its AI tech tree, attempting to create a super cheat for itself. Because if it doesn’t create a cheat, it looks like it can’t defeat Dragon Country.

The minds of elites like Musk are very clear: Eagleland’s biggest advantage lies in its low human rights advantage.

They can only rely on this advantage to attract smart people from all over the world with high welfare benefits, and to use the education and medical resources that should be given to the poor to recruit smart people from around the world. Only then can they hope to gather the world’s intelligence to defeat Dragon Country.

Musk’s words continued, ”Our Interstellar Gate was shut down before it even opened. It’s truly laughable to think about.”

The ”Interstellar Gate Plan” was Eagleland’s grand AGI strategy, which it planned to invest 500 billion USD in.

Lin Yuan interjected, ”The Interstellar Gate is indeed very difficult to continue. Since you couldn’t come up with those 500 billion yourselves, you went to your allies to solicit funds. But now that DS-R1 is open source, your allies see it and think, ’Wow, it turns out developing AI doesn’t cost that much money, so why don’t I do it myself?’

So, haha.”

”You’re right. Originally, we hoped to use the Interstellar Gate Plan to transfer research funds to our allies, and at the same time, through these research funds, firmly bind our allies to our chariot. If they invested, they would certainly hope to get a share from our future AGI grand strategy.

This is similar to recreating a WTO in the AI field, a new AI cooperation organization that completely excludes you.

But now, you...”

”We’ve flipped the table.”

”I have to admit, that’s indeed the case.”

As soon as DS-R1 became open source, even a joke country like India quickly built its own large language model and gained the qualification to participate in the AI field, let alone other countries.

”Actually, we’ve done this kind of thing before.

Do you still remember your Middle Ages? That era when knowledge was transcribed on parchment. In that era, knowledge had to be attached to power. Power monopolized the channels for acquiring knowledge. But our papermaking and movable type printing broke that monopoly.

This allowed your common people to afford books and receive knowledge. After that, you discovered the absurdity of ecclesiastical power, and then the foundation for the Renaissance was laid.

And isn’t your Interstellar Gate just a new era’s attempt to monopolize channels of knowledge through power?

When AI becomes linked to large capital investment and is closed source, only those of you who control large models and GPU computing cards will be qualified to decide who can use AI and who cannot. Isn’t this a new era’s monopoly on knowledge?

But humanity has long been extremely disgusted and fed up with the monopoly of knowledge.

Have you forgotten the birthplace of the open-source spirit? Wasn’t it you yourselves who proclaimed, ’Knowledge should be as free as air’?

Your original intention, where is your original intention?”

”Lin, honestly, you’re almost making me cry.”

”Sorry, I’m not complaining about you; I’m using this opportunity to chat with you and complain about your current situation.”

”I know. AI should be open source. Wasn’t that my original intention when I founded OpenAI? If ChatGPT hadn’t been closed source, there would be no success for DS-R1 today. Even if DS-R1 had made groundbreaking progress, people would still attribute it to ChatGPT’s open-source contribution.

First-mover advantage is something I’ve always insisted on.

If it had been open source from the beginning, DS-R1 would very likely have been born on the foundation of ChatGPT; it might have become a branch of ChatGPT.

This would prevent us from monetizing ChatGPT in the short term, but for our Interstellar Gate Plan, it would be long-term and effective.

However, from the day ChatGPT became closed source, we had already failed.

Our own people have already cursed OpenAI as ’CloseAI,’ and our own engineers are already disappointed with ChatGPT; they even welcome DS-R1’s success.

So, we ourselves handed the hilt of the sword to you.

I am very helpless!

Not only can I not stop all of this from happening, but I also have to help them erode our own credibility.

I can even guess the next plot.

You will definitely stick to the open-source path, and our ChatGPT, due to too many vested interests, will not be able to go open source, at least in the short term.

Even if it becomes open source in the future, it will be criticized as a loser who was forced to compromise.

Those open-source fanatics will worry that ChatGPT might become closed source again one day, so they will naturally choose to join DS, and then you will take the opportunity to unite with our allies. Relying on your consistently emphasized overt strategies, you will unite our allies to promote AI open source, and portray us as the embodiment of evil.

And this was originally the path I envisioned; I had thought of it, really, Lin, I clearly thought of all this long ago.

Look at my success with Tesla; I used the first-mover advantage to succeed even in such a harsh environment. I couldn’t just pile on resources, so I used the simplest, most straightforward way to achieve the highest profit margin in the entire industry.

I am very good at this kind of success...”

Musk was even a little emotional.

”Look at my rockets at SpaceX; we also succeeded. Your country’s space agency has even started to reference our designs.

But, when it comes to AI, I am very helpless; I cannot make all the decisions. I think we are doomed in AI.

WTF! Our allies will definitely not stand with us.”

”Yes. Because your allies will eventually realize that instead of offering you hundreds of billions of dollars in tribute for a future ticket to participate in AI, it’s better to embrace open source and use that money to build your own AI system.

The latter can be controlled by themselves, while the former means spending money and still having to put up with your attitude.

Your AI strategy itself never intended to include your allies.

And each of us knows how to calculate; who would turn down money?”

There was a long silence on the other end of the phone. ”Alright, alright, let’s not talk about this anymore... Anyway, no matter how much more we say, it won’t change anything. Sometimes I feel quite desperate, but I will still persevere, because that’s just how life is...

Lin, do you know, I look at you as if I’m looking at an heir.

We are both staunch supporters of technological progress.”

”No, there are commonalities between us, but also differences.”

”Hmm? Is that so?”

”I’m not as extreme as you. In your eyes, ordinary people can be sacrificed for technology, but I don’t think so. Simply put, your view is: give civilization time, and my view is: give time to civilization.”

”What do you mean?”

”Technology should serve people, not just satisfy your curiosity.”

”Alright. That’s our difference. But at least we both agree that technology should progress.”

”On that point, yes. Elon, honestly, if it doesn’t work out, why don’t you come over?”

”What? Don’t make such jokes. You and I both know that humanity has not yet developed to the point of abandoning tribal prejudices.”

”Haha~~” Lin Yuan chuckled, tacitly acknowledging it.
