The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The coastal winds howled over the jagged cliffs as Zevryn urged his black steed westward. With the dead scout’s encrypted ledger and heavy coin safely secured within his bronze spatial ring, and the masterwork spear with its lethal black steel mithril alloy tip resting securely at his saddle, he maintained a steady, purposeful pace. The shadow of the magical warning sent by the scout hung heavy in the air, but Zevryn’s immediate priority remained absolute: he had a guild contract to fulfill.

By late afternoon, the terrain shifted from wind-swept ridges to desolate, sea-battered flats choked with salt-crusted rocks and the skeletal remains of an ancient, forgotten port.

Before him stood the ruins.

Crumbled stone arches and sunken amphitheaters jutted from the grey earth like broken teeth, lashed constantly by the freezing foam of the western sea. According to the guild briefings, this was the epicenter of the troubling rumors, a newly awakened lich haunting the crypts below and sending tremors of dark energy through the coastal trade routes.

Zevryn brought his steed to a halt in the sheltered alcove of a collapsed stone wall, tying the animal securely out of sight. Drawing his dark cloak tight around his shoulders, he began his reconnaissance. Moving with methodical precision, he circled the perimeter of the decaying structures, checking the flagstones for hidden tripwires, decaying wards, or recent footprints. Finding only the natural erosion of salt and wind, he traced a winding path toward a heavy stone staircase half-buried under sea sand and rubble, marking the descent into the crypts.

Stepping through the threshold, the harsh sunlight vanished, replaced by a suffocating gloom. The air within the underground corridors smelled heavily of damp earth, stagnant brine, and the metallic tang of decay. Torches flickered with sickly green flames along the damp stone walls, casting long, distorted shadows that danced with every swell of the ocean waves above.

Zevryn drew no weapon yet. He relied entirely on his stealth, utilizing the silent footwork of a drow master to navigate the damp flooring without a single echo. He trailed cautiously down the long, winding hall, his preternatural senses expanding to map the architectural layout and track the subtle, erratic pulses of ambient mana bleeding through the stone.

At the far end of the central hall, behind a rusted set of iron grilles and a fractured stone archway, the source of the corruption finally revealed itself.

A single figure hovered above a desecrated altar. Swathed in tattered, rotted ceremonial robes, a skeletal construct wreathed in flickering, unstable necromantic fire muttered to itself in a harsh, rasping whisper, clutching a crude, fractured crystal that served as a makeshift phylactery.

Zevryn melted into the shadows of the doorframe, his pale eyes narrowing in cold, analytical evaluation.

He measured the density of the entity’s aura, the clumsy flow of its dark mana, and the weak defensive wards scrawled across the floorboards. This was no ancient, terrifying arch-lich capable of raising armies or shattering city walls. It was a weak, isolated remnant, a lesser spellcaster whose botched ascension had left it trapped and half-mad in a damp coastal crypt.

Not powerful enough to warrant caution, Zevryn concluded mentally. An easy elimination to secure the guild bounty and keep my skills sharp.

Stepping out from the deep shadows of the hall, Zevryn let his presence be known, his voice cutting coldly through the damp tomb.

”Your time under the sun, and beneath it, ends here.”

The skeletal abomination whirled around instantly, hollow eye sockets blazing with sudden, furious rage. Recognizing an intruder, the creature let out a sharp, ear-piercing screech and slammed a decaying hand hard against the stone dais, channeling a violent pulse of dark, necromantic energy through the floor.

Clack-clack, rattle-bone.

From the shadowy alcoves and cracked flagstones lining the hall, twenty skeleton soldiers clawed their way upward into the dim light. Their eye sockets flared with sickly green fire as they gripped rusted swords and bone spears, forming a jagged, relentless wall of defense between Zevryn and their master.
