The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

Instead of turning immediately toward the southern trails, Zevryn tracked the residual scent of the black tiger deeper into the craggy, pine-choked ravines of the Northwest Iron Spine. The beast’s path was marked not by stealth, but by sheer, unadulterated devastation.

It took him less than an hour to reach the bandits’ hidden encampment, a sprawling warren of tents and timber-reinforced caves carved into the sheer limestone cliffside.

The entrance was a slaughterhouse. Roughly ten dead outlaws littered the blood-stained snow. Some had been cleanly decapitated, while others were ripped open from throat to pelvis by massive, razor-sharp talons. Zev walked slowly through the carnage, his pale eyes inspecting the precise, savage geometry of the kills. A rare glint of grim appreciation flickered in his gaze.

”Not bad,” he muttered inwardly.

A fresh trail of footprints led away from the carnage, marking survivors who had broken and fled into the treacherous crags. But interlocking with their frantic boot-prints were deep, purposeful tiger tracks closing the distance. Those men were already dead; they just didn’t know it yet.

Zev moved systematically through the bodies, stripping away heavy coin purses and sliding them into his pack. Deeper inside the primary cavern, he discovered the bandits’ collective hoard: crates of stolen silver, a velvet-lined box of polished trinkets, and a stack of heavy leather sacks filled with mixed coinage.

He stared at the mass of treasure, his jaw tightening. Hauling this much dead weight across four days of high-altitude mountain trails while already carrying a severed head was a fool’s errand. It would slow him down, draw unwanted eyes, and invite ambush.

Choosing pragmatism over greed, Zev packed a single manageable sack of high-value currency and gemstones, sealing the rest within a heavy waxed leather pouch. He slipped out of the cave, scouted a secluded grove a mile down the ridge, and buried the excess loot deep beneath the roots of a blasted, twin-trunked pine. Pulling out his map, he carefully scratched in the local topography and distinct rock landmarks so he could retrieve it later when he had proper transport.

The return journey to the maritime republic was a grueling, bone-weary march. By the fourth day after his descent from the peaks, Zev crossed the city gates under the concealing sweep of his storm-grey cloak and stumbled into the dim, salt-rotted foyer of the Salty Kraken.

The one-eared innkeeper looked up from behind the sticky bar, taking in the exhausted slump of the drow’s shoulders and the grim dust of the frontier caked into his leather armor.

Without a word, Zev reached into his pouch and slapped a heavy, gleaming gold coin onto the splintered wood.

”Let someone prepare a warm bath,” Zev rasped, his voice low and gravelly from days of high-altitude wind.

The innkeeper raised a scarred brow, a knowing, oily grin spreading across his face. ”With a couple of the girls to scrub your back, friend? And maybe some fine southern linen to replace those rags?”

Zev’s pale eyes narrowed with cold, unamused irritation beneath his cowl. ”Just clothes that will match my style. No women. Just a hot bath and dry garments.”

He dropped a second gold coin onto the counter, letting it spin to a dead halt against the first.

The innkeeper’s grin vanished, replaced by the immediate, professional deference of a man who understood the difference between a rowdy brawler and a dangerous professional. He scooped up the gold with a swift motion and nodded sharply. ”Done. Room three. The water’s boiling now.”

Hours later, submerged up to his chin in a deep wooden tub of steaming, cedar-scented water inside his private back room, Zevryn let out a long, slow breath. The scalding heat bit into his tired muscles, while the water slowly turned murky with the grime, dried mud, and faint metallic tang of mountain blood.

Resting his head against the rim of the tub, listening to the muffled, rhythmic crashing of the harbor waves outside, Zev let his mind drift over the immediate horizon. The guild bounty on the bandit leader was waiting to be cashed in. The trader’s brass token sat safely in his pouch, ready for use. And somewhere out in the wild peaks, a black tiger was roaming free.

It was time to collect his silver and plot his next move.
