The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a brilliant, glittering glow across the marbled floor of the grand banquet hall, but the light seemed to dim whenever the tall, obsidian-skinned drow moved. Zevryn’s flawless, deep black complexion, striking silver-white hair, and luminous, pale eyes commanded the room with an undeniable, terrifying gravity. High-society merchants and silk-robed nobles parted like water before him, whispering behind fans and paralyzed by the sheer, predatory aura of a creature belonging to the sunless depths.

Among the clusters of wealthy traders gathered near the southern archway stood Master Thorne, a prosperous merchant who had spent the last twenty years carving out trade routes across the treacherous northern passes. He held a crystal goblet of vintage red wine, chatting idly with a fellow guild associate.

As Zevryn’s dark cloak swept past their circle, Thorne glanced up. His breath caught violently in his throat. The wine glass slipped from his numb fingers, shattering against the stone floor with a sharp, echoing clatter as red liquid splashed across his polished shoes. Thorne stumbled backward, his face draining of all color as a low, terrified shriek caught in his windpipe.

His companion grabbed his arm, steadying him in alarm. ”Thorne! By the gods, what is it? Have you lost your mind?”

Thorne could barely speak, his hands trembling uncontrollably as he pointed a shaking finger toward the receding figure of the drow.

”Look at him... look at his eyes and his face,” Thorne whispered, his voice trembling with a lingering, visceral horror. ”I... I couldn’t ever forget him.”

”Who is he?” his friend asked, frowning in confusion. ”Some foreign dignitary?”

”No,” Thorne stammered, his eyes wide and hollow. ”Months ago... in the brutal passes of the Northwest Iron Spine. My caravan was ambushed by a pack of cutthroats and a maddened, collared beast. I thought we were dead. I thought my life was over.”

Thorne swallowed hard, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. ”That drow... he appeared out of the shadows like a ghost. He slaughtered the bandits before we could even blink. But it wasn’t just his skill with a blade, it was his eyes. The absolute, cold void in his gaze. I was more terrified of him than I was of the bandits he butchered.”

Driven by a strange mix of lingering terror and profound, debt-bound respect, Thorne pulled himself together, swallowed hard, and broke away from his group. Pushing through the parting crowd, he approached the obsidian-skinned drow who stood quietly beside the poised young Reniah.

”Master... Zevryn?” Thorne murmured, bowing his head deeply, his voice tight with tension. ”I... I don’t know if you remember me. Months ago, in the Northwest Iron Spine. My merchant caravan was ambushed by bandits and that collared beast. You... you saved us.”

Before Zevryn could reply, Thorne’s friend, a haughty, wealthy syndicate associate named Master Vance who had trailed closely behind, pushed his way into the conversation with an abrasive sneer.

”Thorne, have you lost your absolute mind?” Vance scoffed, loudly enough to draw the wary glances of nearby nobles. ”Bowing and scraping to some wandering cutthroat in a grey cloak? This is a high-society merchant gala, not a roadside trading camp. Who even let a drow savage into...”

Zevryn did not even blink. He completely ignored Vance, acting as though the man were nothing more than empty, stagnant air. His luminous, pale eyes remained locked entirely on Thorne, untouched by insult or irritation.

Thorne, however, broke out into a cold sweat, paralyzed with dread. He knew the absolute lethality hidden beneath that calm exterior; he had seen what those black mithril blades did to nineteen men in seconds.

”P-Please forgive him, Master Zevryn, he doesn’t know...” Thorne stammered frantically, glaring daggers at his ignorant companion.

Vance scoffed, stepping closer with a haughty smirk, entirely misinterpreting the drow’s silence as weakness. ”What’s the matter, foreigner? Cat got your tongue, or are you just too uncivilized to speak to your betters?”

Zevryn finally tilted his head slightly, his voice dropping into a low, freezing register that seemed to drop the ambient temperature around them by ten degrees.

”Dogs barking at shadows,” Zevryn said flatly, his gaze sliding past Vance as if looking straight through him. ”Quiet your companion, Thorne. He’s testing a patience he cannot afford to lose.”

Thorne grabbed Vance’s sleeve with a white-knuckled grip, practically dragging the bewildered and indignant merchant backward. ”Shut your mouth, Vance! For the love of the gods, just shut your mouth!”

Zevryn didn’t spare them another glance, turning his attention back to Reniah and the murmuring crowd.
