The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

As the murmurs surrounding Master Vance’s hasty retreat began to fade, a familiar figure parted the sea of silk robes and approached Zevryn with a measured, deliberate stride.

It was Alejandro de Silva, the renowned swordsman whose legendary speed and southern fighting style Zevryn had dismantled months ago during the instructor tryouts at Julian’s estate. Unlike the trembling nobles or arrogant syndicate members, Alejandro carried himself with the quiet, hard-earned respect of a true warrior who knew the exact depth of the abyss.

Alejandro stopped a few paces away and bowed respectfully, a warm, eager smile touching his lips.

”Master Zevryn,” Alejandro greeted clearly, his voice carrying across the quieted corner of the hall. ”I didn’t expect to see you gracing high society. Though, since fortune has brought us together, I must ask: would you grant me the honor of a rematch? My loss on the training grounds still lingers in my mind, and I’ve spent every week since trying to bridge the gap.”

Across the hall, gasps of absolute shock rippled through the clusters of rival merchants and aristocrats.

”Did he just...?” whispered a prominent guild leader, his eyes widening in horror as he stared at Alejandro. ”That’s Alejandro de Silva. The finest blade in the southern districts! He was defeated... by this drow?”

The realization hit the high-society crowd like a physical blow. The quiet drow standing before them wasn’t just a mysterious newcomer; he was an apex duelist who had effortlessly humbled one of the republic’s most celebrated masters.

Zevryn looked down at Alejandro, his pale, luminous eyes reflecting the crystal chandeliers. He didn’t boast or mock the request; he simply weighed the man’s genuine drive for growth.

”If you have free time, send a message to Julian’s father when I am available,” Zevryn replied flatly.

Before Alejandro could answer, a second swordsman, a towering, sharp-featured companion who had watched Alejandro’s defeat with a mix of skepticism and competitive fire, stepped up beside him.

”If Alejandro is stepping into the ring with you, I want in as well,” the companion challenged, his hand resting casually on the pommel of his broadsword. ”I’ve heard the stories, but I prefer to judge a master’s edge with my own eyes. Can I join this little exhibition?”

Zevryn, who never backed down from a challenge, met the man’s gaze with absolute, unblinking calm.

”How about three days from now?” Zevryn asked smoothly. ”We can ask Julian’s father if we can borrow his courtyard for the bout.”

Hearing his name, Master Aldous, who had been hovering nearby, nervously monitoring the social climate, pushed his way through the crowd with wide eyes.

”Borrow the courtyard? For a public exhibition featuring Master Zevryn and the republic’s top swordsmen?”

Aldous’s eyes instantly gleamed with the sharp, calculating glint of a master merchant smelling profit in the air.

”Can I sell tickets?” Aldous blurted out, a wide grin spreading across his face.

Alejandro and his companion exchanged amused glances and nodded in agreement. ”By all means, Master Aldous. Let the whole city watch.”

Seizing the golden opportunity with both hands, Aldous spun around, cupped his hands, and shouted across the grand hall to the assembled elite:

”Hear this! In three days, an exclusive, high-stakes exhibition match right on our grounds! Master Zevryn against the finest blades in the republic! Only fifty viewing seats available!”

Aldous raised a finger triumphantly. ”Price of admission: twenty gold pieces, or equivalent silver! Place your reservations with my ledger-keeper before the night ends!”

The hall erupted into a frenzy of murmurs and scrambling nobles, eager to buy a front-row seat to watch a drow master carve his legend into the heart of the maritime republic.
