The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

Under the cover of a pitch-black, moonless night, where the salt-heavy gales of the maritime republic swept across the upper cliffs, Zevryn returned to the outer perimeter. Rather than risking inspection at the crowded main gates, he moved like a phantom toward the towering stone ramparts of the walled upper ward. Utilizing his shadow-hide armor and precise, weightless drow climbing techniques, he scaled the sheer vertical surface, gliding silently past the humming nodes of the perimeter’s arcane rune wards. Those blue-violet tripwires of concentrated mana flared with microscopic static, yet he slipped between their resonant frequencies without triggering a single alarm.

He dropped quietly into the affluent residential district, navigating the labyrinth of quiet, cobblestone avenues lined with gas lanterns until he reached the address Cassandra had provided: a secluded limestone estate tucked just off the opulent sprawl of Aurelius Square, flanked by high stone walls and weeping willows.

Dropping noiselessly over the rear garden wall, Zevryn skirted the gravel paths where low-tier wardens marched in slow, complacent patrols, their halberds catching the faint starlight. Bypassing the heavy front deadbolts, he slipped into the manor through an unlatched, iron-barred cellar window, landing with absolute silence upon flagstones slick with subterranean moisture. Descending deeper into the masonry maze, he followed the mounting stench of stale ozone, rotting tallow, and stagnant sulfur straight to a heavily reinforced oak door glowing with faint, leaking light.

Inside his private, warded basement laboratory, Councilman Lysander stood hunched over a cracked basalt altar. Unstable blue mana flared wildly from a complex summoning circle scrawled in powdered silver and dried blood. Lysander’s hands trembled with manic exhaustion, his lips moving in frantic, breathless chants as he tried to wrench an open gate into the lower planes.

From the absolute blackness of the far corner, a quiet, flat voice cut through the damp air.

”And you’re doing it wrong.”

Lysander shrieked, nearly dropping his ritual dagger as he whipped around so fast his robes tangled around his ankles. His face drained of all color, his eyes bulging wide with absolute, suffocating terror as he stared into the oppressive shadows.

”W-Who’s there?!” the councilman gasped, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic, stumbling backward until his spine slammed hard against the stone altar. ”Guards! Intruders! By the gods, stay back!”

Stepping slowly into the dim halo of the ritual candles, Zevryn pulled back his hood. His pale, cold eyes pinned the councilman in place like a pinned insect. With a calculated flick of his wrist, he produced the heavy, oil-stained Necromancy Book from his bronze spatial ring and held it aloft, letting the flickering candlelight reflect off its dark, necrotic binding.

”You wanted this book, right?” Zevryn asked softly, his tone dangerously calm.

Lysander’s breath hitched violently in his throat. Greed instantly warred with his terror, his eyes locking hungrily onto the forbidden grimoire he had spent a fortune trying to acquire through shadowy intermediaries. ”The true manuscript,” Lysander panted, his sweat-slicked hands twitching out instinctively toward the tome. ”How much? Name your price! A thousand gold? Ten thousand? Give it to me!”

Before the councilman could take another step forward, Zevryn’s wrist snapped upward.

A razor-thin, venom-laced needle hissed through the damp air with terrifying velocity, sinking deep into the muscular side of Lysander’s neck. The councilman froze mid-step, his mouth opening in a silent, agape gasp as the potent neurotoxin flooded his bloodstream. Within a single heartbeat, his limbs went entirely rigid, his eyes locked wide in paralyzed horror as he collapsed stiffly against the flagstone floor like a felled oak.

Zevryn stepped over the paralyzed mage, looking down with cold, unyielding disdain.

”Tsk, tsk,” Zevryn murmured, shaking his head slowly. ”Practicing this vile art.”

He knelt beside the trembling, helpless man, placing the open Necromancy Book directly across Lysander’s chest. From his alchemical kit, he drew a small crystal vial containing a volatile, silver-hued catalyst, pouring a few drops over the ancient pages to accelerate a rapid, violent necrotic mutation.

”Don’t worry,” Zevryn whispered into the paralyzed man’s ear, his voice freezing cold. ”I’ll use this to rewrite what’s left of you... and turn you into a lesser ghoul.”

That evening, absolute chaos erupted within the tranquil confines of the Aurelius Square estate. Terrified, blood-curdling screams echoed through the mahogany hallways as a hideously mutated, flesh-ripping ghoul, what remained of Councilman Lysander, shattered its basement bonds and went on a mindless, feral rampage. It tore through the manor’s domestic staff and shattered antique furnishings before the heavily armed estate guards finally cornered the raving, unnatural monster in the grand marble foyer, putting it down with a desperate barrage of crossed broadswords and heavy pikes.

By sunrise, the city guard and Magic Council investigators had locked down the entire street, sealing the iron gates with red wax seals. The official conclusion was swift and absolute: Councilman Lysander had been secretly practicing forbidden dark arts in the dead of night. In his desperate, unbridled greed, he had attempted to decipher an incomplete, highly unstable grimoire filled with missing containment wards. The dark ritual had catastrophically backfired, mutating his physical form into a raging ghoul and destroying him from the inside out.

Later that morning, Zevryn walked calmly up to the main city gates among a dense line of morning merchants, delivery carts, and traveling scholars.

A heavily armored gate guard stood with a grim, exhausted expression, waving people through while shaking his head at the lingering rumors. Zevryn paused at the checkpoint, offering a neutral, inquiring look.

”Morning. What’s with all the extra guards and tension today?” Zevryn asked smoothly, gesturing toward the bustling plaza within.

The guard spat a glob of phlegm onto the cobblestones in disgust. ”Nasty business in the upper ward last night. One of the high-ranking Magic Councilmen, Lysander, got caught red-handed practicing forbidden dark arts. The magic backfired on the arrogant prick, turned him right into a howling ghoul. Tore up half his own servants before the estate guards finally put him down.”

Zevryn’s eyes widened in a carefully measured, flawless display of simulated shock.

”By the gods... right in the upper ward? Dangerous times indeed.”

”Tell me about it,” the guard grunted, waving him impatiently through the portal. ”Move along.”

Zevryn stepped past the heavy iron threshold, pulling his storm-grey hood back over his silver hair as he walked unbothered into the heart of the bustling city, carrying the true, priceless treasures of the Iron Spine safely secured within his ring.
