The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The Mage District of Port Vandermir smelled of burnt ozone, dry parchment, and crushed winter-mint. Unlike the reeking, salt-caked alleys of the lower docks, these broad, white-stone avenues hummed with a subtle, invisible static that made the hairs on the back of a man’s neck stand at attention. Small brass wind-chimes hung above shuttered windows, ringing autonomously whenever a localized mana-ward flared and settled.

Consulting the scrap of paper given by the one-eared innkeeper, Zevryn located a narrow, nondescript storefront wedged between a scholarly apothecary and a workshop dealing in copper conduits. A brass plate beside the door read Thurlow’s Curiosities and Spatial Arts.

Zev pushed open the door, a small silver bell chiming overhead.

Behind a polished mahogany counter cluttered with glowing glass vials and brass astrolabes sat a gaunt, sharp-featured clerk with spectacles perched precariously on his nose and silver threads woven into the cuffs of his dark robes. He barely looked up as Zev stepped inside.

”If you’re looking for cheap scrying ink or common ward-chalk, the market stalls are three blocks down,” the clerk droned, adjusting a pair of heavy brass tweezers. ”If you actually have business here, state it quickly.”

”I was given this address,” Zev said, his voice flat as he tossed the innkeeper’s grease-stained note onto the counter.

The clerk glanced down at the paper, his eyes lingering on the neat, scrawled handwriting. He paused, slowly raising his gaze to peer over his spectacles at Zev. ”Who gave you this?”

”The innkeeper,” Zev replied. ”At the Salty Kraken.”

The moment the name dropped, the clerk’s posture shifted entirely. The bored, condescending slouch vanished, replaced by an abrupt, tight-lipped professionalism. His eyes darted nervously to Zev’s storm-grey cloak and the hard, unblinking glare of his pale eyes.

”Ah,” the clerk murmured, clearing his throat and instantly smoothing his robes. ”Master Kraken’s establishment. Forgive me, traveler. What is it you require today?”

The one-eared barkeep has deeper roots in Port Vandermir than he pretends, Zev noted inwardly, filing the detail away for later. He kept his expression neutral. ”I need a storage ring. Spatial accommodation.”

The clerk nodded, reaching beneath the counter to pull out a velvet-lined wooden tray containing a dozen dull metallic bands. ”We categorize by capacity. Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers.”

Zev looked at the selection. Even the lowest tier, the Bronze ring, cost an eye-watering sum of silver, representing a small fortune to ordinary citizens. But for an elite mercenary operating across high-altitude borders, carrying severed heads and heavy coin sacks by hand was an unacceptable liability.

”The Bronze,” Zev said, pointing to a plain, dark iron band etched with simple geometric containment runes.

”An excellent choice,” the clerk said, sliding the ring forward. ”It provides a localized spatial pocket roughly the volume of a small room, six by six feet. More than enough for standard gear, provisions, and loot.”

The clerk handed over a small, silver-tipped needle. ”Prick your finger. A drop of blood is required to bind the containment coordinates to your personal life-force. Once bonded, no one else can access or strip the pocket.”

Zev didn’t hesitate. He pricked his thumb, pressed a single drop of dark blood against the inner rim of the iron ring, and felt a faint, cold tug against his pulse as the spatial weave locked to his biology. He slipped the ring onto his left ring finger, where it settled with a comfortable, weightless chill.

”Do you maintain a catalog of combat-grade magic scrolls and talismans?” Zev asked, his eyes scanning the surrounding shelves.

The clerk arched a thin brow. ”Are you a practitioner, traveler?”

”I practiced a bit,” Zev answered smoothly.

”Show me what you have in mind,” the clerk said, turning to a side cabinet.

”Area-of-effect,” Zev specified. ”Something designed to slow movement or trap targets in a confined space.”

The clerk pulled out two shallow cedar boxes, setting them gently on the counter. ”For Bronze-tier, we currently stock two variants: a Wood-element seed-talisman that sprouts entangling iron-briers upon activation, and an Ice-element frost-sigil that flash-freezes a targeted zone. We have higher Silver-tier variants, but nothing in Gold at the moment.”

The clerk quoted the price. It was steep, nearly matching the cost of the storage ring itself, but Zev’s pouch was still heavy from the guild bounty.

”Give me three of each,” Zev said.

The clerk blinked, clearly surprised by the casual purchase of high-end combat consumables, but promptly retrieved the heavy-sigiled talismans. He handed over six thin, card-like talismans etched with glowing crimson runes.

”To deploy,” the clerk explained carefully, lowering his voice, ”you channel a pulse of raw mana into the sigil, project your intent toward the target area, and toss it. Be warned, if you miscalculate the vector, you’ll catch yourself in the briars or the frost-lock.”

The clerk watched Zev with a flicker of professional anxiety, half-expecting some clumsy novice to accidentally detonate a containment spell inside the shop. But his tension dissolved instantly when Zev flicked his wrist; with a subtle spatial hum, all six talismans vanished from sight, smoothly absorbed directly into his new bronze storage ring.

The clerk let out a long, quiet breath, visibly relieved. ”Mastery of spatial inventory. Very clean.”

”One last inquiry,” Zev said, leaning slightly against the counter. ”Does this guild handle custom enchantments for armor and weapons?”

”We do,” the clerk replied, regaining his professional composure. ”Though it depends entirely on the complexity of the commission and the grade of materials. Standard turnaround for a durable enchantment is roughly one month. The pricing is scaled by tier: Bronze reinforcement for basic durability, Silver for elemental resistance or kinetic deadening, and Gold for masterwork arcane integration.”

Zev mentally calculated his timeline. He needed a proper custom ranger armor set forged first, before pouring high-tier enchantments into it.

”My thanks,” Zev said, turning toward the door.

”Safe travels, traveler,” the clerk called out politely. ”And give my regards to the Kraken if you see him.”

Stepping back out into the sunlit avenues of the Mage District, Zev adjusted the collar of his storm-grey cloak. His pockets were lighter, but his tactical inventory had expanded exponentially. Next stop: finding a master smith to forge the armor that would keep him alive through the next contract.
