The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The carriage rolled smoothly up the sweeping gravel drive of the grand merchant estate, coming to a halt before a pair of towering mahogany doors framed by blazing iron sconces. Through the glass, the sprawling manor blazed with the light of a hundred chandeliers, echoing with the soft strains of string quartets and the murmur of high-society chatter.

The carriage door swung open. Zevryn stepped out first into the cool night air, his storm-grey cloak sweeping back with practiced grace. Under the bright illumination of the estate lanterns, his true nature was unmistakable. His skin possessed the flawless, deep obsidian hue of a true drow, contrasting sharply with the pale, powdered complexions of the surface nobility. His immaculate silver-white hair fell in stark lines over his dark shoulders, and his luminous, pale eyes seemed to swallow the ambient light, gleaming with the cold, calculating intelligence of an apex predator born in the sunless depths of the Underdark.

He turned and offered a gloved hand, assisting Reniah as she descended from the carriage. Beneath the warm glow, her simple yet exquisitely tailored black dress shimmered faintly, her posture upright and poised, entirely belying her past as a scruffy, hidden servant.

As they walked up the broad stone steps, the liveried footmen stationed at the entrance pulled the heavy double doors open, announcing their arrival to the crowded grand hall.

”Master Zevryn and guest, arriving!”

The ambient chatter within the hall dropped by half. Dozens of wealthy merchants, council associates, and aristocratic scions turned their heads toward the threshold. The sight of a towering, regal dark elf stepping openly into the heart of high society sent an electric shock through the room. To the sheltered surface-dwellers, a drow was a myth from the terrifying dark realms below, a creature of shadows and lethal grace.

Zevryn entered with absolute, predatory calm. His pale eyes scanned the sea of silk robes, jeweled necklaces, and fake smiles in a single, sweeping glance. An instinctive, primal chill rippled through the nearest clusters of guests, causing them to recoil and instinctively clear a wide path before him, whispering behind trembling fans and raised goblets.

Julian, standing near the receiving line with his father, spotted them and let out a visible breath of relief. He hurried over, followed closely by his father, a stout, sharp-eyed merchant adorned in fine velvet robes.

”Master Zevryn! You actually came,” Julian said, bowing respectfully, before glancing over at Reniah with a momentary, stunned blink. ”And... Reniah. You look remarkable.”

Julian’s father stepped forward, extending a hand with a wide, grateful smile, though his eyes darted nervously over Zevryn’s striking dark features and obsidian skin. ”Ah, the reclusive master instructor! I am Master Aldous, Julian’s father. I cannot thank you enough for honoring our home tonight, especially given your schedule. And your companion honors us as well.”

Zevryn accepted the handshake with a cool, perfunctory grip. ”Master Aldous. Your son insisted. I trust the hospitality matches his enthusiasm.”

”Of course, of course! Please, enjoy yourselves,” Aldous replied, swallowing hard as he felt the sub-zero chill radiating from the drow.

As Zevryn and Reniah moved deeper into the hall, the whispers among the rival merchant houses swelled to a fever pitch. Across the room, clustered near a marble pillar, stood representatives of the rival trading syndicates, men who had spent the last fortnight whispering about Lysander’s gruesome demise and plotting how to crush Aldous’s shipping empire. They stared at the dark elf with a mix of superstitious dread and deep unease, recognizing the undeniable aura of a master killer who kept his blades strictly in their sheaths.

Reniah stayed close to Zevryn’s shoulder, her heart hammering against her ribs, but the weeks of grueling physical and mental discipline in the safehouse kept her from flinching under the predatory stares of high society.

Zevryn poured a glass of dark amber wine from a passing silver tray, his pale eyes narrowing as he watched the rival faction leaders whispering behind their goblets.

Let them whisper. Tonight was merely a game of observation, but the wolves had just invited a drow into their pen.
