The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The interior of Gideon’s Weaves and Tailoring smelled of wet sheep wool, scorched linen, and the sharp, chemical tang of imported mordants. Shelves lined the cramped, dim shop from floor to vaulted ceiling, packed with stacked bolts of heavy canvas, boiled leather, and coarse mountain-spun wool.

Behind a tall cutting counter stood Gideon himself, a wiry, sharp-eyed artisan with a graying beard and fingers permanently stained indigo. He looked up as the heavy velvet door drifted shut behind Zevryn, taking in the drow’s midnight skin, stark white hair, and the deadly, matte-black hardware slung across his back. Gideon didn’t gasp or reach for a poker; a tailor who survived the maritime republic’s lower wards learned early that the most dangerous men were the quiet ones who paid in heavy silver.

”Well,” Gideon murmured, leaning his knuckles against the scarred wood. ”The sea-stone walls keep out a lot of things, but I don’t get many visitors from the eternal ice. What does a shadow need from a tailor?”

Zev stepped up to the counter, his pale eyes scanning the racks. ”I need discretion. My current wardrobe is an aesthetic insult to the concept of blending in.”

Gideon let out a dry, knowing chuckle. ”Ah. The midnight-and-ivory syndrome. Down here in the sun-bleached south, stark black leather and snow-white hair are walking beacons. They pull every idle eye in the bazaar like iron to a lodestone. You’re an eye magnet, friend. If you want to walk through the lower wards without every guard and cutpurse memorizing your silhouette, you need tonal humility.”

The tailor turned, rummaging through a tall wooden bin in the dim corner before pulling out a heavy, sweeping garment and tossing it onto the counter with a dull, satisfying thud.

”Try this,” Gideon said, smoothing his indigo-stained palms over the fabric. ”A masterwork traveler’s cloak. Tailored from heavy, storm-grey wool-and-silk blend. Grey is the only true neutral color of the borderlands. It absorbs the dust of the plateaus, mirrors the slate of the mountain crags, and doesn’t scream assassin the moment a sunbeam hits it.”

Zev ran a gloved hand over the material. It was dense, supple, and deadened sound against his leather armor.

”It’s more than just a dye job,” Gideon added, lowering his voice conspiratorially. ”The weaver who traded this to me claimed it was threaded with a whisper of old, low-grade illusion craft from the northern frontier. Stay motionless against a stone wall, a cliff face, or a dusty alley, and the weave shifts just enough to drink the light. It breaks your outline. Makes you look like a trick of the shadows.”

Zev tossed a heavy silver coin onto the counter. It spun once, humming against the wood before dropping flat. ”Wrap it.”

With the new grey cloak secured, Zev did not immediately head for the wilderness. Before leaving the maritime republic, he navigated the damp, reeking labyrinth of the lower docks until he found the Salty Kraken, the discreet, salt-crusted tavern recommended by the cafe server.

The proprietor, a burly, squinting man missing his left ear, eyed Zev with the practiced neutrality of someone who valued his remaining cartilage. Without a word, Zev slapped a heavy handful of silver coins onto the sticky bar top, paying for a private back room a full month in advance. The innkeeper pocketed the metal with a single, respectful nod, tossed a brass key across the wood, and asked zero questions.

Zev spent the afternoon locked behind the heavy oak door of his room. He cleaned his composite warbow, oiled his twin sabers, and slept a light, predatory sleep, the kind of hyper-vigilant rest native to a drow who had grown up listening for the scuttling of subterranean monsters in the dark.

By dusk, when the maritime city’s amber grease-fires flickered to life and the evening fog rolled in off the harbor, Zev stepped out into the chill air. The heavy, storm-grey wool cloak draped perfectly over his shoulders, its deep hood pulled low to completely shroud his face. The twin sabers and bow were safely concealed beneath the sweep of fabric. Melting effortlessly into the gathering shadows of the evening crowds, Zev slipped past the northern gate unhindered, heading out toward the jagged, snow-dusted peaks of the Iron Spine mountain range.

Contract number two, The Beast of the Iron Spine Foothills, was waiting in the dark.
