The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The guard-conspirator made a desperate, choking lunge with his broadsword, but a swift, devastating kick from Zevryn shattered his kneecap, dropping him into the dirt with a muffled scream. Within seconds, a touch of the Chitin-Stalker neurotoxin silenced him permanently, leaving him paralyzed and gasping in the dust.

Cassandra pressed her back flat against the cold basalt wall, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. Her academic composure had entirely evaporated, replaced by the primal panic of someone staring into the abyss.

Zevryn stepped forward, his shadow swallowing her light. He reached into his harness and pulled out a small glass phial filled with a clear, ordinary liquid, swirling it casually before her eyes.

”You’ve been nicked by the Chitin-Stalker venom,” Zevryn said, his voice a low, flat whisper that carried absolute conviction. ”You have less than a minute before your throat locks and your lungs stop working. Who is your sponsor, where does he live, and give me every detail of his operations.”

Cassandra’s eyes bulged in horror as she stared at the phial, completely unaware that the liquid inside was merely clean water from his flask. The sheer terror of the neurotoxin’s reputation shattered her resolve.

”Lysander!” she choked out, tears streaming down her face as she clutched her chest. ”A mid-level mage in the Magic Council! He lives in the walled upper ward, off Aurelius Square. His estate has a private, warded basement where he conducts his illegal research! He financed this expedition because he needs the ancient texts to advance his secret necromantic rituals!”

”And his security? His guards?” Zevryn pressed coldly, committing every detail of the estate layout to memory.

”Only two low-tier wardens at night... he keeps his operations secret even from his own staff to protect his seat on the council!” Cassandra sobbed, gasping for air. ”Please, the antidote!”

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Zevryn pocketed the phial with a completely neutral expression. ”You’ll have your cure once we clear the inner vault.”

He hauled her to her feet by the collar of her robes, shoving her roughly ahead of him through the massive stone threshold. They stepped into the inner sanctum of the true Iron Spine tomb, a vast, subterranean vault lit by the eerie, phosphorescent glow of ancient ceiling crystals.

At the far end of the chamber stood the ultimate security measure: an unstable, high-tier pressure plate trap designed to obliterate any unauthorized intruder with concentrated arcane fire.

”Walk forward,” Zevryn commanded, his voice devoid of mercy.

”W-what? The runes!” Cassandra stammered, realizing too late that there was no antidote, and that she was never meant to leave this tomb alive.

With a brutal shove, Zevryn sent her stumbling straight onto the center of the pressure plate.

A blinding flash of crimson energy erupted from the floor. Cassandra barely had time to scream before the ancient defensive wards obliterated her, turning her into ash in a fraction of a second. The final trap was sprung, leaving the path ahead completely safe.

Zevryn stepped past the dissipating embers and entered the central treasury.

Atop a raised stone pedestal rested two items untouched by centuries of decay: an advanced sword technique manual and a thick, oil-stained manuscript pulsing with a sickly, necrotic aura.

Zevryn picked up the sword manual first, flipping through the pages. The footwork and kinetic flow were brilliant, adding a lethal edge to his repertoire. He resolved to integrate its principles into his own sword skills, noting that if Julian or Reniah proved their talent in the months to come, he might eventually pass the teachings down to them.

He then picked up the Necromancy Book. Even though he despised the vile, unnatural nature of dark arts, a cold realization settled over him. With a quiet flick of his wrist, he stored both the sword manual and the dark grimoire safely within his bronze spatial ring, knowing he had a use for the forbidden volume yet to come.

Beside the pedestal, resting in a velvet-lined rack, lay a pair of pristine weapons: one perfectly balanced steel sword and one finely forged short sword.

Zevryn ran a gloved thumb along the edge of the short sword, a faint, rare hint of approval touching his lips.

Well, he thought to himself, securing the blades. A proper gift for my pupils.
