The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The first pale streak of dawn had barely begun to paint the high stone walls of the courtyard when Zevryn’s eyes snapped open. There was no grogginess, no lingering haze of sleep, just an instant, hyper-aware transition from rest to absolute readiness.

Stepping out into the cool morning air, he caught the faint, rich aroma of roasting beans and sizzling cured meat drifting from the rear auxiliary yard. Following the scent, he found the mute girl moving with ghost-like quiet around the outdoor kitchen area. Already, she had a modest, perfectly executed breakfast laid out on a clean wooden table: warm toasted bread, rich spiced broth, and a steaming clay mug of dark, aromatic coffee.

Zev took a slow sip of the coffee. It was bold, smooth, and precisely brewed, a small luxury that immediately settled his nerves.

As he finished the last of the broth, the girl stepped forward respectfully, keeping her eyes lowered to the flagstones. She held out a small scrap of neatly torn parchment with a single word written in delicate, precise ink: Reniah.

Zev nodded, committing the name to memory. He reached into his belt pouch, pulled out a heavy leather bag filled with silver pieces, and set it firmly on the table.

”This is for this month’s provisions,” Zev said, his voice low and level. ”If it falls short, inform me. Ensure the coffee is prepared just like this every morning. As for the rest of the meals, choose whatever you see fit to procure. But heed this rule: when I am in the courtyard training, you are not to disturb me under any circumstances.”

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Reniah gave a low, silent bow of acknowledgment, gathered her baskets, and slipped out through the heavy gate toward the bustling morning markets with quiet efficiency.

Left alone in the enclosed sanctuary of the courtyard, Zev stripped away his upper garments, exposing his obsidian skin, the lean, whip-cord definition of his warrior’s frame, and the pale, jagged scars tracing his torso like maps of past violence. The early morning sun crested the tall perimeter walls, casting long, sharp shadows across the smooth stone flagstones.

He drew his twin mithril sabers. The pale blades caught the low light, humming with a silent, lethal promise.

Zev closed his eyes, centered his breathing, and began.

He didn’t start with raw power; he began with absolute stillness, his weight sinking low into a balanced, predatory stance. Then, the movement ignited. It was his signature blade art: Drifting Moon.

He became a blur of dark steel and midnight shadow. The short saber flickered like a crescent eclipse, parrying phantom strikes, while the longer mithril blade traced impossible, fluid arcs through the thin morning air. There was no wasted motion, no friction. Every step was a masterclass in biomechanical efficiency, designed to slip past armored gaps and sever tendons before an opponent could register the threat.

He spun, low and fast, the wind whistling off the edges of the steel as he executed a sweeping double-slash that could have decapitated two armored foes in a single heartbeat. The sabers moved so fast they seemed to tear the very light around them, dissolving into a shimmering vortex of grey and silver.

In the quiet isolation of his new safehouse, beneath the unfiltered gaze of the morning sun, the drow mercenary honed his craft, deadly, silent, and relentlessly preparing for the blood-soaked roads waiting beyond the walls.
