Rebirth before Apocalypse: My Whole Family are Bigshots!

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: For the Pork Knuckle

”It turns out neither your grandfather nor I have a terminal illness, and we’ve gained superpowers.”

Liu Jing was stunned for a while before she finally understood.

”That’s right! As the superpowers improve, lifespan will also increase.” Bai Xiqin nodded affirmatively, ”Maybe you and my grandpa will live longer than Xiao Fan and I!”

Ice particles began to fall in a flurry from Liu Jing’s wrinkled face as she cried tears of joy.

”This is wonderful!” Liu Jing stood up excitedly and hurried outside, ”I must tell your grandfather right away!”

Bai Xiqin followed her grandmother with a gentle smile on her face.

There are very few people who awakened their superpowers before the apocalypse. The sooner one awakens their superpowers, the stronger they become after undergoing the energy baptism of the end times.

Unexpectedly, her grandparents had awakened their powers before the apocalypse. Bai Xiqin instantly felt assured that even if she didn’t have space (powers), she could still live well in the future.

Despite both elders being seventy, with the enhancement of their superpowers, each person’s lifespan will lengthen.

It’s said that elderly superpower users above the Fifth Rank can even grow black hair!

In the courtyard, an old man with white hair crouched on the ground holding a cleaver, preparing to cut the throat of a big rooster.

Bai Yifan was standing by with hot water, ready to pluck the chicken.

”Old man, we don’t have a terminal illness!”

Ice particles were falling from Liu Jing’s face as she crouched beside Bai Zhengxuan, speaking to him excitedly.

”What terminal illness? Who has a terminal illness?” Bai Yifan looked completely baffled.

”Weren’t we not supposed to talk about it outside?”

Seeing the ice particles falling from Liu Jing, Bai Zhengxuan promptly discarded the cleaver and the rooster, using his hands to catch the ice particles, tossing them into the hot water to destroy the evidence.

”Oh no! The chicken ran away!” Liu Jing picked up the cleaver and swiftly grabbed the escaping rooster, slicing its neck with one stroke, then said, ”Our granddaughter said it’s some superpower thing, and we’ll become mighty in the future!”

”What superpower?”

Having been a teacher imparting the core values of stoic materialism all his life, Bai Zhengxuan couldn’t understand the concept of superpowers at all.

”Superpower is superpower!” Liu Jing frowned as she explained to her old companion again, ”Basically, we’re going to be really powerful!”

Having been a forensic doctor all her life, Liu Jing was used to dealing with corpses, and her language skills were poor.

”Huh?”

Old man Bai Zhengxuan still looked completely bewildered.

”Grandma, are you an Ice Ability User?”

Bai Yifan weakly glanced at the ice particles on the ground in front of Liu Jing.

”Yeah!” Liu Jing waved her hand nonchalantly, ”Your grandpa is some sort of Water, Fire, and Wood Three Ability User!”

Bai Yifan: ...

”What exactly is a superpower?”

Bai Zhengxuan asked Liu Jing again with a baffled expression.

”Superpower is superpower!” Liu Jing pointed at Bai Zhengxuan with a bloodied cleaver and said, ”I’ve explained it so many times, and you still don’t get it?”

Bai Zhengxuan: ”... I get it now.”

”As long as you get it!” Liu Jing rolled her eyes and stuffed the dead chicken and cleaver into Bai Zhengxuan’s hands, ”Add more mushrooms!”

”...Okay.”

Bai Zhengxuan silently placed the cleaver far away from Liu Jing and began preparing the chicken.

”Alright, I’ve informed your grandpa, let’s go inside and eat some fruit, the sun is glaring!”

Liu Jing pulled Bai Xiqin inside, feeling quite pleased.

Living for seventy years should be enough, but she and her old partner weren’t ready to bid farewell to this world just yet.

They had the happiest family, the most adorable grandchildren; no one thought time was too long.

Now it’s great because, as long as they don’t have terminal illnesses, she felt she could ask heaven for another five hundred years!

Bai Zhengxuan looked up quickly at Bai Xiqin and Liu Jing leaving, then lowered his head and whispered to Bai Yifan, ”What exactly is a superpower? At night I keep spewing water and fire, and green buds sprout on me. Is this what a superpower is? Doesn’t seem very useful! It’s just a nuisance at night, itches all over!”

Bai Yifan: ...

This is trouble he’d love to have!

While pouring hot water to pluck the chicken feathers, Bai Yifan calmly picked up Bai Zhengxuan’s phone, downloading an apocalypse-themed novel of one gigabyte for him.

”Grandpa, read these novels first. Once you finish, you’ll understand what a superpower is. ’Rebirth After the Apocalypse: My Whole Family Are Bosses’ is the best novel; it explains everything thoroughly!” Bai Yifan said.

Bai Zhengxuan pinched the phone, squinting as he opened one novel, reading it word by word.

Seeing his grandfather earnestly catching up on the apocalyptic world, Bai Yifan decisively packaged the one-gigabyte apocalyptic themed novel and sent it to the ’Happy Family’ group chat.

In the afternoon, the chef was Bai Yifan, as Master Chef Bai Zhengxuan was engrossed in reading novels.

The aroma of chicken stewed with mushrooms wafted through the entire courtyard. Bai Yifan also made smashed cucumbers and stir-fried several hot dishes.

As a Bai Family man, not knowing how to cook is a disgrace, and falling behind invites trouble!

”Grandma, here, have a drumstick.”

Bai Yifan smiled and placed a big drumstick into Liu Jing’s bowl, and another in Bai Xiqin’s bowl.

Meanwhile, he served Bai Zhengxuan a bowl of mushrooms.

Bai Zhengxuan had high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol, and he couldn’t eat too much meat.

”Sigh!”

Bai Zhengxuan glanced at his wife and grandchildren eating meat with a face full of grievances.

His recently replaced dentures had nowhere to flaunt their use!

”Grandpa, as long as your superpower gets stronger, maybe you’ll even revert to your youth, then you can eat whatever you want.”

Bai Xiqin happily chewed on a drumstick, smiling as she tossed a heavy-hitter onto Bai Zhengxuan.

”Can I eat pork knuckles?”

Bai Zhengxuan’s eyes lit up, and drool almost dripped down.

”Of course, you can!”

Bai Xiqin nodded affirmatively.

”Quick! Quickly tell me how to strengthen those superpowers!” Bai Zhengxuan instantly perked up, ”Is it about spewing more water, fire, and sprouting more green buds?”

Thinking about munching on pork knuckles in the future got Bai Zhengxuan excited, and as he got excited, a green blade of grass sprouted from his white hair.

For the sake of pork knuckles, Bai Zhengxuan decided to seriously enhance his superpowers.

”Grandpa, please control yourself.”

Bai Yifan looked at the green grass on Bai Zhengxuan’s head with resentment.

Bai Yifan felt that he wasn’t the chosen one in the novel, as per the usual trope, his sister probably was.

But he’s still his sister’s brother; the genes and everything are pretty similar, even if he’s just a high schooler, he should be the strongest high schooler in history.

However, now he had no superpowers, and his grandparents were nearly superpower big shots!

It was truly a heartbreaking story.

Liu Jing lifted her hand, plucking the green grass from Bai Zhengxuan’s head, and casually tossed it on the ground before saying calmly, ”You’ll get used to it, your grandpa is becoming a plant person. These days I’m either putting out fires or drying blankets, and occasionally plucking grass.”

Bai Xiqin silently glanced at the green grass on the ground, which was vibrant, lush, and full of life.

Apparently, even she couldn’t grow such a large section of green grass at once.

Bai Xiqin glanced at her grandfather, his hair completely white, his face full of wrinkles, and standing beside her shorter grandmother, not daring to utter a word, appeared—somewhat scared.

It wasn’t his fault; in the presence of a grandmother who could dissect corpses without a change in expression, no one dared act rashly.

However, with the ease her grandfather displayed in manifesting the Three Abilities, he would definitely be at the top after the post-apocalyptic energy explosion.
