The Maker: Hollywood

It had been a little over a month since the party balloons and the wall-sits.

The human body is an incredibly adaptable machine, provided you actually give it the right fuel and force it through the fire. For Daniel, the transformation over the last few weeks hadn’t just been internal; it was becoming undeniably, visibly obvious.

The pneumonia was completely gone. His lung capacity had expanded past its original baseline. But the biggest change was the muscle. Under David Goggins’ absolute tyranny, and fueled by a massive caloric intake of clean proteins that the private chef was practically shoving down his throat, Daniel had packed on a solid ten pounds of lean muscle. His shoulders were broader, pulling the fabric of his t-shirts tight across his chest and biceps. The lingering exhaustion that used to paint dark circles under his eyes had been completely replaced by a vibrant, humming energy.

He didn’t just look healthier; he looked formidable. And the shift had certainly not gone unnoticed in the Bel Air estate.

Margot and Florence had been incredibly vocal about their appreciation for the new physique. The dynamic in the house had shifted into a highly entertaining, slightly distracting territory. Daniel couldn’t walk through the kitchen without Margot casually running a hand over his arms or Florence making a very pointed comment about how well his sweatpants fit. The nightly activities in the master bedroom had seen a significant, extremely enthusiastic uptick in frequency and intensity, leaving Daniel somehow more exhausted from his personal life than his professional one.

But the craziest part of the entire routine wasn’t the muscle or the stamina. It was the fact that Daniel actually started looking forward to the mornings.

It was 5:15 AM.

The alarm clock on the nightstand hadn’t even gone off yet. Daniel was already awake. He didn’t groan, he didn’t stare at the ceiling with a sense of impending doom, and he didn’t drag his feet. He quietly slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Margot and Florence, who were tangled in the sheets beside him.

He threw on a pair of dark athletic shorts and a fitted black t-shirt, laced up his running shoes, and jogged lightly down the massive staircase. He actually felt good. He felt sharp. The heavy, suffocating weight of running the studio all by himself had been delegated away, leaving his mind clear and ready to just put in the physical work.

He walked into the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, and headed out to the driveway just as the heavy iron security gates clicked open.

David Goggins jogged up the long, winding driveway. He was wearing a weighted vest and a dark beanie, expecting to have to bang on the front door and drag a miserable Hollywood director out of bed.

Instead, Daniel was standing on the front porch, stretching his shoulders, looking completely awake and actually smiling.

”Morning, dude,” Daniel said cheerfully, tossing a towel over his shoulder. ”Beautiful day to get after it, right? What are we doing today? Hitting the heavy bags? Track work?”

Goggins stopped at the bottom of the porch steps. He stared at Daniel for a long, quiet three seconds. He looked at the smile. He looked at the bright, chipper energy.

Goggins narrowed his eyes. The former SEAL did not like chipper.

”You’re smiling,” Goggins said, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm register.

”I feel good today, David. Got eight hours of sleep. Lungs are clear. I’m ready,” Daniel nodded, rolling his neck.

”You feel good,” Goggins repeated slowly. A tiny, terrifying smirk twitched at the corner of his mouth. ”Okay, Hollywood. You want to be happy? You want to wake up early and smile at me? We can do that. Follow me.”

Goggins didn’t lead him to the pristine home gym. He didn’t lead him to the treadmill. He walked around the side of the massive estate, heading straight for the steep, grassy hill that overlooked the lower tier of the property.

”We’re doing a modified Murph. But because you’re in such a great mood, we’re doing it on the hill,” Goggins announced, dropping a fifty-pound sandbag at the base of the incline. ”You’re going to put that sandbag on your shoulders. You’re going to bear-crawl up this hill. When you get to the top, you give me twenty burpees. Then you carry the bag back down. We’re doing it until that smile falls off your face.”

Daniel looked at the hill. It was incredibly steep, damp with morning dew, and looked like an absolute nightmare.

”Dude, I was just saying good morning,” Daniel said, his smile faltering slightly.

”Bear crawl. Now,” Goggins barked.

The next ninety minutes were an absolute blur of physical agony. Goggins completely threw the planned workout out the window and dialed the intensity up to eleven just to punish Daniel for having a good attitude.

Daniel was drenched in sweat, his arms shaking violently as he clawed his way up the wet grass with fifty pounds of sand crushing his neck. His lungs were burning, his quads were screaming, and every time he reached the top, Goggins was standing there, demanding perfect form on the burpees.

By the time the timer finally went off, Daniel collapsed onto the wet grass at the bottom of the hill, completely paralyzed. He rolled onto his back, staring up at the California sky, gasping for air. His arms felt like they were filled with wet cement.

Goggins walked over, casually drinking from a water bottle, not even breathing heavy. He looked down at Daniel and burst out laughing. It was a loud, genuine laugh.

”Yeah, my bad, man,” Goggins chuckled, holding a hand out to pull Daniel up. ”I definitely overdid it today. You just pissed me off with that chipper attitude at five in the morning. I had to break it.”

Daniel grabbed his hand and let Goggins haul him to his feet. He leaned over, hands on his knees, panting heavily.

”You’re a sick man, David,” Daniel wheezed, wiping mud off his face.

”I know,” Goggins grinned, tossing Daniel his towel. ”But hey, you didn’t quit. And your shoulders look huge. Go take a shower. Drink your sludge.”

An hour later, freshly showered and feeling a massive rush of endorphins, Daniel drove his Range Rover onto the Burbank lot.

He didn’t head to an editing bay or a marketing meeting. Elena had effectively taken over the day-to-day corporate warfare, leaving Daniel free to focus strictly on the creative pillars of the studio. Today, that meant checking in on the pre-production for Captain America: The First Avenger.

He walked into the casting department offices. The room was large, utilitarian, and currently dominated by a massive corkboard stretching across the entire back wall.

Joe Johnston, the veteran director Daniel had entrusted with the project, was standing in front of the board, holding a cup of black coffee and looking like he wanted to jump out the window.

The corkboard was covered in dozens of glossy headshots of almost every leading man in Hollywood. Some had red Xs drawn across them in thick marker. Others had question marks. None of them had a green check.

”Morning, Joe,” Daniel said, closing the door behind him and walking over to the board. ”How goes the search for the star-spangled man?”

Joe turned around and let out a heavy, frustrated sigh. ”It’s a disaster, Daniel. A complete and utter disaster. I have seen fifty guys this week. Fifty. And none of them are hitting the note.”

Daniel looked at the board. There were some massive names up there. A-list action stars, up-and-coming television leads, traditional dramatic actors.

”What’s the disconnect?” Daniel asked, leaning casually against the edge of a large conference table.

”They don’t understand the assignment,” Joe complained, rubbing his temples. ”Half of them come in here and play it like a generic action hero. They puff their chests out, they drop their voices an octave, and they try to act like a badass marine. They completely miss the fact that Steve Rogers is a skinny kid from Brooklyn who just doesn’t like bullies. They play the serum, not the man.”

Joe pointed to another cluster of headshots. ”And the other half? They lean so far into the 1940s ’aw shucks’ earnestness that they sound like a cartoon character. It comes off cheesy. We need someone who has an absolute, unshakeable core of sincerity, but still has the physical presence to lead an army and stand toe-to-toe with Robert Downey Jr. in the Avengers crossover.”

Daniel nodded, understanding the frustration perfectly. It was arguably the hardest role to cast in the entire universe. Captain America required a guy to be unequivocally good without being boring.

”Well, we have to keep looking,” Daniel said. ”We aren’t settling. If we miscast Steve, the entire moral center of the cinematic universe collapses. Have you looked at the guys from that new HBO war series?”

Joe didn’t answer right away.

Joe had stopped looking at the board. He was staring directly at Daniel.

Daniel had his arms crossed over his chest, casually leaning against the table. The fitted dark grey Henley he was wearing clung tightly to the ten pounds of new muscle he had packed on. His shoulders were broad, his posture was effortlessly commanding, and the sharp, striking angles of his face—the literal face card that made half of Hollywood’s leading men incredibly jealous—was fully rested and glowing with health.

Joe’s eyes widened slightly as the realization hit him like a freight train.

”Why the hell am I looking at headshots?” Joe blurted out, his voice loud in the quiet room.

Daniel blinked, caught completely off guard. ”What?”

”You,” Joe said, pointing a finger directly at Daniel’s chest. ”It’s you, Daniel. You’re the guy.”

Daniel let out a short, dismissive laugh, shaking his head. ”Joe, stop. I’m not an actor. I’m a director. I own the studio. I just hired you to direct this movie so I could have less work on my plate.”

”You did Joker,” Joe countered immediately, stepping closer. ”You acted opposite Margot Robbie and you completely held your own and went far beyond. You have the chops. You have the physical presence. You literally just walked in here looking like you eat iron plates for breakfast. And you wrote the script! Nobody understands the sincerity of Steve Rogers better than the guy who invented him for this universe.”

”Joe, I am not playing Captain America,” Daniel said firmly, standing up from the desk.

But as he said it, his brain completely betrayed him.

He stopped. He looked at the empty corkboard.

He remembered the set of Joker. He remembered the intense, chaotic fun of actually stepping in front of the lens. When you were directing, you carried the weight of the entire crew, the budget, the lighting, and the schedule. But when you were acting? You just showed up, hit your mark, delivered your lines, and went home. It was surprisingly liberating.

And Joe was right. Daniel didn’t have to worry about directing this movie. He had already delegated it. He would just be an actor on someone else’s set.

The image of stepping into the iconic suit, of holding the shield, of eventually standing on a set in a circle with Robert, Hemsworth, and the rest of the team... it sent a sudden, massive jolt of adrenaline straight through his chest.

”I mean...” Daniel started, his voice trailing off as he looked at his own reflection in the dark glass of the office window. He flexed his shoulder slightly. The muscle was definitely there.

”Don’t think about the logistics,” Joe pushed, seeing the hesitation. ”Think about the character. Think about what the audience would do if the head of Miller Studios stepped into the suit.”

Daniel turned back to Joe. The crazy, impulsive part of his brain—the exact same part that had told him to jump to Star Wars from 12 Angry Men and cast an uninsurable Robert Downey Jr.—took the wheel.

”If I do this,” Daniel said slowly, his voice dropping into a serious register. ”I am an actor on your set. I am not the studio head. You call action, you call cut, and if you don’t like a take, you tell me to do it again. Deal?”

Joe’s jaw practically hit the floor. He had said it in the spur of the moment out of sheer desperation. He didn’t actually expect the billionaire head of the studio to agree to it.

”Deal?” Daniel repeated, raising an eyebrow.

”Deal,” Joe croaked, shaking Daniel’s outstretched hand. ”Yeah. Absolutely. You’re Steve Rogers.”

”I’ll have Elena draft the contract,” Daniel smirked. ”Send the costume department to my house for measurements. I have to go to the Valley lot. See you later, Joe.”

Daniel turned and walked out of the casting office, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.

Joe Johnston stood alone in the quiet room for a full minute.

The adrenaline slowly faded, replaced by a sudden, crushing wave of absolute terror. He looked at his own hand.

He had just cast Daniel Miller as his lead actor.

Which meant Joe Johnston, a veteran but mortal filmmaker, now had to sit in a director’s chair and give acting notes to the guy who had directed nothing but Masterpieces. He had to direct the greatest, most intimidating perfectionist Hollywood had ever seen.

Joe let out a long, shaky sigh, dropping his face into his hands. He felt like he had just stabbed himself directly in the leg.

”What have I done?” Joe whispered to the empty room, wanting to cry.

By the time Daniel arrived at the San Fernando Valley lot, the sheer absurdity of what he had just agreed to had settled into a quiet, buzzing excitement in the back of his mind. But he had to put it in a box for now. He was back in director mode.

He walked onto Stage 4.

The atmosphere on the set was incredibly tense, but it was a manufactured, highly controlled tension. The crew was whispering, moving quietly around the massive soundstage.

In the center of the room, Dante Ferretti’s team had built a hyper-realistic interior rig of a standard, slightly beat-up sedan, surrounded by massive green screens and complex lighting arrays designed to simulate passing streetlamps.

They were shooting the car ride.

In the script for Spider-Man, it was the emotional climax before the physical climax. Peter Parker shows up to pick up MJ for the homecoming dance, only to realize that her father is Adrian Toomes—the Vulture. The scene was a masterclass in claustrophobic tension, as Toomes drives them to the dance and slowly, methodically pieces together Peter’s secret identity just by looking at him in the rearview mirror.

Daniel took his seat at the video village, slipping his headset on. Tom and Bob were already dialed in.

”We’re ready to roll, Dan,” Tom whispered, respecting the quiet on the floor.

”Let’s see it,” Daniel said.

Inside the prop car, Sadie Sink was sitting in the passenger seat, looking beautiful and slightly uncomfortable in her formal dance dress. Stephen Walker was crammed into the back seat, wearing a cheap, slightly ill-fitting suit, looking like a deer caught in the headlights of a semi-truck.

And in the driver’s seat was Michael Keaton.

Between takes, Keaton was incredibly relaxed. He was cracking jokes with the camera operators, teasing Stephen about his tie, and keeping the mood light.

But the absolute second Daniel called, ”Action,” over the stage speakers, a terrifying switch flipped inside the veteran actor.

Keaton didn’t do anything massive. He didn’t yell. He didn’t wave his arms around. He just gripped the steering wheel and looked into the rearview mirror. His eyes became dark, calculating, and incredibly sharp. He dominated the entire confined space of the prop car purely with his physical presence and the quiet, dangerous cadence of his voice.

”So, Peter,” Keaton said smoothly, the fake streetlights washing rhythmically over his face. ”What do you do for fun?”

Stephen wasn’t just acting intimidated; he was genuinely rattled. Being stuck in a small box with Michael Keaton staring a hole through you in a rearview mirror was a terrifying experience for a young actor.

”I, uh... I do the Stark Internship,” Stephen stammered, his voice pitching up perfectly.

”Stark,” Keaton repeated, letting the word hang in the air like a threat. He let the silence stretch out for an agonizing five seconds. He didn’t rush his lines. He controlled the entire rhythm of the scene. He looked back at the road, then slowly back to the mirror, his eyes narrowing slightly as the pieces clicked together in his head.

”Good for you,” Keaton finally said, his voice dropping an octave, laced with a chilling, knowing menace.

”Cut,” Daniel said quietly.

He leaned back in his chair, a massive smile spreading across his face.

”That was unbelievable,” Tom breathed out, staring at the monitor. ”He barely moved, and I’m terrified of him.”

”That’s why you hire Michael Keaton,” Daniel said, taking his headset off.

He let Keaton run the floor, allowing the veteran actor to naturally pull the best possible, authentic reaction out of Stephen.

They shot the scene from three different angles, and they were completely wrapped by four in the afternoon.

As the crew started breaking down the lighting rigs around the car, the heavy doors of Stage 4 opened.

Elena walked onto the soundstage, carrying a thick, red classified production folder. She bypassed the craft services table and walked straight over to Daniel’s director’s chair.

”You look entirely too relaxed for a man running a billion-dollar production,” Elena noted, handing him the red folder.

”I’ve learnt that delegation is a beautiful thing, Elena,” Daniel smiled, opening the folder. ”What’s the status?”

”The core cast wraps principal photography on Friday,” Elena said, keeping her voice low so the crew couldn’t hear. ”Which means it’s time to execute the black-site protocol for the post-credits sequence.”

Daniel nodded, flipping through the secure documents.

”I booked Stage 12 at the absolute far edge of the lot,” Elena continued. ”It’s completely isolated. Security perimeter is already established. No cell phones allowed on the floor. Only a skeleton crew will be permitted inside. Bob Elswit, your primary sound mixer, and three grips you personally vetted.”

”Perfect,” Daniel said, closing the folder.

Stephen was walking past the video village, holding a bottle of water, having finally escaped the terrifying prop car.

”Hey, Steph,” Daniel called out. ”Come here for a second.”

Stephen walked over, looking relieved to be out of the suit jacket. ”What’s up, boss? Did I mess up a take?”

”No, the takes were brilliant. Keaton made you look like a terrified child, which is exactly what we needed,” Daniel said. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. ”I need you to clear your schedule for this coming Saturday night. Late. Around eleven.”

Stephen frowned, confused. ”Saturday night? I thought we officially wrapped on Friday?”

”The movie wraps on Friday. You wrap on Saturday,” Daniel corrected.

”What are we shooting?” Stephen asked, trying to read the red folder in Daniel’s hand.

Daniel just smirked. He stood up, clapping a heavy hand onto Stephen’s shoulder.

”You’ve been playing in the street-level sandbox for a few months now, kid,” Daniel said softly, a spark of pure excitement in his eyes. ”You fought a guy in a flying bird suit. You did good. But you’re part of a much bigger universe now. On Saturday night, I’m going to introduce you to a guy with an eyepatch.”

Stephen froze. His eyes went wide.

Anyone who had seen the first Iron Man movie knew exactly who the guy with the eyepatch was. Samuel L. Jackson had walked out of the shadows and permanently changed the rules of cinema. Nick Fury. The Avengers Initiative.

”Wait,” Stephen gasped, his voice cracking. ”Are you serious? I’m meeting... I’m doing a scene with...”

”Don’t say his name out loud on the floor,” Daniel interrupted with a sharp grin. ”Just be at Stage 12 on Saturday night. And wear the suit.”

Daniel walked past him, heading for the exit doors, leaving Stephen standing completely frozen near the monitors, his brain short-circuiting at the reality of what was about to happen.

Daniel pushed the soundstage doors open and stepped out into the afternoon sun. He took a deep breath of the warm Valley air, flexing his shoulders, feeling the pull of the new muscle. He had a post-credits scene to direct, a studio to run, and apparently, a vibranium shield to catch.

He was actually going to have to thank Goggins tomorrow morning.

Nah. Daniel shook his head. Goggins was probably going to make him work more if he said anything.
