The Maker: Hollywood

The Atlantic ocean did not care that they were making a movie.

It was a little past six in the morning, and the sky over Boston Harbor was the color of a bruised iron skillet. The storm front the coast guard had warned them about hadn’t just arrived; it had parked itself directly over the Massachusetts coastline, churning the gray water into violent, white-capped swells. The wind was howling at a steady forty miles an hour, driving a freezing, relentless sheet of rain sideways across the docks.

Daniel stood on the swaying deck of the chartered commuter ferry, holding onto a rusted metal handrail to keep his balance. He was wearing a thick, yellow heavy-duty maritime raincoat, a pair of insulated waterproof boots, and a wool beanie pulled down over his ears. The rain was hitting his face like a handful of small gravel, stinging his cheeks and blurring his vision, but he didn’t wipe it away.

He was looking through a director’s viewfinder, framing up the shot against the turbulent horizon.

Ten feet to his left, the camera crew was clustered around the heavy Panavision setup. They were wrapped in thick ponchos, shouting over the roar of the wind and the deep, throaty rumble of the ferry’s diesel engines. A massive clear plastic rain deflector was spinning furiously in front of the lens, throwing off sheets of water just to keep the glass clear enough to capture an image.

”How’s the horizon line?” Daniel yelled, his voice barely cutting through the gale.

”We’re getting pitched around pretty good!” the operator shouted back, his eye pressed tightly to the eyepiece. ”I can stabilize the roll, but the pitch is all over the place. It’s gonna look rough, Dan!”

”I want it rough,” Daniel yelled back. ”It shouldn’t look smooth. They’re heading into an isolated prison in a hurricane. Keep the framing tight on their faces and let the background heave.”

He lowered the viewfinder and turned to look at his actors.

Leo and Mark were standing by the starboard railing, looking absolutely miserable.

There were no warming tents out here on the deck. There were no assistants holding umbrellas, because an umbrella would have been snapped in half and thrown into the harbor within five seconds.

Leo was leaning over a metal trash can, rehearsing the seasickness that plagued Teddy Daniels in the opening scene. He wasn’t faking the shivering. His oversized 1950s trench coat was completely soaked through, the heavy wool plastered flat against his shoulders. Water was running in steady streams off the brim of his fedora, dripping down his nose and collecting in the rough, uneven stubble on his chin. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets, and his shoulders were practically touching his ears.

Mark Ruffalo was faring a little better, but not much. He was wearing a lighter tan raincoat, his curly hair completely plastered to his forehead. He was bouncing on the balls of his feet, trying to keep his blood circulating, looking out at the choppy gray water with a grimace.

Daniel walked over to them, leaning in close so he didn’t have to scream.

”You guys good?” Daniel asked.

Mark let out a sharp, barking laugh that was instantly swallowed by the wind. ”Good? Dan, I can’t feel my toes. I think I left my toes in Los Angeles. If we do more than three takes of this, I’m going to get pneumonia.”

”It builds character, Mark,” Daniel said, patting him heavily on a soggy shoulder.

”I’m a character actor, I have enough character,” Mark shot back, though he was smiling through his chattering teeth.

Leo didn’t laugh. He didn’t even look up at first. He kept his head down, taking slow, deliberate breaths through his nose. When he finally looked at Daniel, his eyes were dead, focused, and entirely stripped of the usual Los Angeles polish.

”The wind is louder than the dialogue,” Leo rasped, his Boston accent thick and grating. ”If I project too much to compensate, it’s going to sound like theater. Teddy’s sick. He shouldn’t be yelling.”

”Don’t project,” Daniel told him immediately. ”Keep the volume where it naturally belongs. If the wind steps on the lines, we’ll clean it up in automated dialogue replacement in post. Give me the physical performance. Give me the nausea. Let Chuck do the heavy lifting in the conversation.”

Leo gave a slow nod, water dripping off his hat. ”Alright. Let’s shoot the damn thing before we freeze to the deck.”

Daniel stepped back, giving them space. He looked around the deck, checking the positions of the background extras—a couple of tough-looking guys in maritime gear securing thick ropes. He checked the camera one last time, giving the operator a thumbs up.

He didn’t bother walking back to his canvas director’s chair. It was completely soaked anyway. He just stood behind the camera operator, bracing his legs against the pitch of the deck.

”Roll camera!” Daniel shouted.

”Speed!” the sound mixer yelled from under a plastic tarp.

The slate was slammed shut in front of the lens.

”Action,” Daniel said, his voice carrying just enough authority to cut through the noise.

The transformation in Leo was instantaneous. The shivering stopped being a reaction to the weather and became a symptom of his character’s internal misery. He pushed himself off the railing, wiping his mouth with the back of a trembling, freezing hand, and stumbled slightly as the ferry hit a massive swell.

Mark walked into the frame, holding two old-fashioned metal travel mugs. He slipped naturally into the easy, grounded warmth of Chuck Aule, completely ignoring the freezing rain hitting his face.

”You okay, boss?” Mark asked, offering one of the cups.

Leo looked at it like it was poison. He swallowed hard, his jaw tight. ”Yeah. Fine. Just... the water. Can’t stand the water.”

”You get used to it,” Mark said, taking a sip from his own cup. He leaned against the railing, casual, letting his eyes drift over Leo’s miserable posture. ”Chuck Aule. We’re supposed to be partnering up.”

Leo looked at him, his eyes darting quickly, carrying that faint, unplaceable edge of paranoia. He didn’t reach for a handshake right away. He just stared at Mark, the rain running down his face, looking like a man who trusted absolutely no one.

”Teddy Daniels,” Leo finally rasped.

They ran the scene. The boat heaved, the wind screamed, and the actors leaned into it. The elements weren’t a backdrop; they were a physical antagonist pushing against the dialogue. Daniel watched the monitor out of the corner of his eye, seeing the raw, desaturated colors of the film stock perfectly capturing the bleakness of the moment. The gray sky, the dark coats, the pale, freezing skin. It looked like a documentary from a forgotten era.

”Cut!” Daniel yelled when they reached the end of the page.

The tension broke. Mark immediately went back to bouncing on his heels and blowing warm air into his cupped hands.

”How was that?” Leo asked, rubbing his face.

”It was great,” Daniel said, walking over. ”But we’re doing it again. Mark, when you hand him the coffee, don’t look at him right away. Look at the water first. Make it feel a little more dismissive, like you aren’t trying too hard to be his friend. Teddy is paranoid. If you come on too friendly, he’s going to put his guard up.”

”Got it,” Mark nodded, resetting his position by the door to the lower cabin.

”Leo, more nausea,” Daniel instructed. ”You aren’t just seasick. Your head is splitting open. The water reminds you of something you don’t want to think about. Bury it deeper.”

Leo just nodded once, moving back to the trash can.

They shot the scene four more times. By the fifth take, the ferry was taking on serious spray over the bow, and everyone on deck was thoroughly, uncomfortably drenched. But the footage was undeniable. It had a gritty, visceral texture to it that you simply could not fake on a soundstage in California.

”That’s a wrap on the ferry exterior,” Daniel finally called out, wiping a stream of freezing water off his own face. ”Let’s get the boat back to the dock. We move to the asylum gates after lunch.”

A collective groan of relief went up from the crew.

Daniel left the camera department to break down the rig and headed below deck. The interior of the ferry was cramped, smelling of diesel fumes and damp wool, but it was gloriously warm. He pulled off his wet beanie and ran a hand through his damp hair.

He found Leo and Mark sitting on a padded bench near the space heater. Someone from the catering team had handed them both dry towels and paper cups of hot black coffee.

”You’re a sadist, Miller,” Mark said, wrapping the towel around his neck and sipping the coffee like it was a life-saving medicine. ”A genuine, certified sadist.”

”You look great on camera, Mark,” Daniel smiled, leaning against the bulkhead. He teased, ”The rain gives you character.”

Leo was staring down into his coffee cup, his shoulders still hunched. He hadn’t entirely dropped the accent. ”The asylum exterior is going to be worse. The wind coming off those brick walls is going to create a tunnel effect. It’s going to be freezing.”

”We have warming tents set up near the gates,” Daniel assured him. ”You guys can stay by the heaters until we call action. Go get changed, get some hot food in you. We drive to Medfield in an hour.”

Daniel left them to thaw out and walked off the ferry as it finally bumped heavily against the wooden pilings of the dock.

The production basecamp was set up a quarter-mile down the shoreline, tucked behind a line of pine trees to block the worst of the wind. It was a small village of white trailers, humming generators, and catering tents flapping violently in the storm. The ground was already turning into a thick, soupy mud pit.

Daniel walked through the camp, his boots sinking an inch into the mud with every step, until he reached his director’s trailer. He pulled the heavy metal door open and stepped inside.

It was quiet. The walls were insulated against the storm, turning the roaring wind outside into a dull, manageable thrum. The trailer was utilitarian—a small kitchenette, a leather sofa, and a desk covered in storyboards, production schedules, and a laptop.

He stripped off the yellow raincoat and hung it on a hook by the door, kicking his muddy boots off onto a rubber mat. He was just pouring himself a cup of coffee from the small machine on the counter when the secure satellite phone on his desk began to buzz.

He walked over, picked it up, and looked at the caller ID. It was his lead estate attorney in Los Angeles.

Daniel hit the answer button and put it on speaker, dropping onto the leather sofa with a heavy sigh.

”Tell me you have good news, David,” Daniel said, rubbing his eyes.

”I always have good news when you pay my retainer, Dan,” David’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and clear despite the thousands of miles and the storm outside. ”I’ve got the preliminary architecture for the trust finished. It took some creative maneuvering, but we got exactly what you wanted.”

Daniel took a sip of his coffee. ”Walk me through it.”

”We are incorporating the domestic trust in a specific jurisdiction in Nevada,” David explained, the sound of keyboard clacking faintly in the background. ”Nevada has some of the most aggressive asset protection and dynasty trust laws in the country. It allows us to build a legal structure that doesn’t just manage money, but dictates medical proxies, power of attorney, and joint-survivorship rights.”

”And it legally binds the three of us?” Daniel asked, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

”Tighter than a standard marriage license,” David confirmed. ”On paper, the entity we are creating is essentially a private, irrevocable partnership. Margot and Florence will both have identical, unchallengeable authority over your estate and medical decisions if you are incapacitated. And more importantly, they will have that same legal authority over each other. If anyone ever tries to challenge the validity of your family unit in a courtroom, they will run into a legal brick wall fifty feet high. It is ironclad.”

”Good,” Daniel nodded to himself. ”What about the ceremony? Have you looked at the locations I sent you?”

”I have a team on it right now,” David said. ”We looked at the yacht charter off the coast of France, but the maritime laws regarding the specific signing of these trust documents got a little messy in international waters. So, we pivoted to the Maldives. There is a private atoll—completely isolated, owned by a holding company out of Singapore. We can rent the entire island for a week. There is one small luxury resort on it. No paparazzi, no unauthorized boats allowed within five miles, and we can secure the airspace with the local government for a fee.”

”Book it,” Daniel said without hesitating.

”It’s going to cost a fortune to lock down the airspace, Dan,” David warned mildly.

”I don’t care what it costs, David,” Daniel said, his voice flat and absolute. ”I want it entirely private. I want our families and our friends to fly in, and I want nobody else to even know it’s happening until we decide to tell them. Book the island. Put down the deposit.”

”Consider it done,” David said. ”I’ll have the final draft of the trust documents couriered to your Boston hotel by next week for your review. How’s the shoot going?”

”I’m freezing to death in a mud pit,” Daniel said, looking out the small window of the trailer at the driving rain.

”Ah, the magic of Hollywood,” David chuckled. ”I’ll let you get back to it. Talk soon, Dan.”

Daniel hung up the phone. He sat on the sofa for a long moment, listening to the rain hammer against the metal roof of the trailer. A small, quiet smile touched his face. The logistics were coming together. The legal nightmare was solved. He just had to get through this shoot, and he could finally build the life he had promised them.

He finished his coffee, stood up, and reached for his wet boots. It was time to go to the asylum.

Three hundred miles to the south, the weather was slightly better, but the pressure was entirely different.

The penthouse suite of the Four Seasons hotel in lower Manhattan smelled of expensive espresso, hairspray, and lilies. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the New York City skyline, currently bathed in the crisp, pale sunlight of early autumn.

Inside the suite, it was organized chaos.

Publicists were buzzing around with clipboards, makeup artists were packing away brushes, and a team of stylists was rolling racks of designer clothing out the door. The early screening of I, Tonya had taken place the night before at a private theater in SoHo, and the reaction had been explosive. The critics hadn’t just liked it; they had been completely disarmed by it. The film was dark, hilarious, violently tragic, and undeniably brilliant.

Now, the real work began. The press junket.

Margot stood in front of a full-length mirror, adjusting the cuffs of a sharp, impeccably tailored black pantsuit. She looked powerful, put-together, and entirely in control.

Florence was sitting on the edge of a velvet sofa across the room, wearing a striking emerald green dress that contrasted sharply with her blonde hair. She was drinking a glass of sparkling water, watching Margot with a quiet, appreciative smile.

”You look like you’re about to fire the board of directors,” Florence noted, taking a sip of her water.

”Good,” Margot said, turning away from the mirror and smoothing down her lapels. ”That’s exactly the energy I need. These journalists have been circling the movie all morning. Half of them want to talk about the ice skating, and the other half want to try and bait us into saying something controversial about the real Tonya Harding.”

”Just stick to the talking points,” Florence said easily. ”We tell them it’s a story about class, abuse, and the media’s obsession with female villains. If they ask about the incident, pivot back to the mother-daughter dynamic. We practiced this.”

”I know, I know,” Margot sighed, walking over and sitting down next to Florence. She reached out and grabbed Florence’s hand, lacing their fingers together for a brief second of quiet grounding. ”I’m just tired. We’ve done twelve television interviews since yesterday morning. My face hurts from smiling.”

”Well, this is the last panel of the day,” Florence reminded her softly, giving her hand a squeeze before letting go as a publicist walked into the room. ”The New York Film Critics Circle. One hour, and then we can order room service and sleep for a week.”

A young, highly caffeinated publicist named Jinny stepped up to them. ”Alright, ladies. They’re ready for you in the Astor Room. It’s a full house. Print media, a few major bloggers, and the trade magazines. We have a moderator, but they will be opening the floor to questions.”

Margot took a deep breath, stood up, and adjusted her posture. ”Let’s go.”

They walked down the plush, carpeted hallway of the hotel, flanked by security and handlers. When they reached the heavy wooden doors of the Astor Room, the dull roar of conversation leaked through the cracks.

The doors opened, and the flashbulbs immediately started popping.

Margot and Florence walked out onto the small elevated stage at the front of the room, taking their seats in the plush leather chairs arranged behind a sleek table. The room was packed with dozens of journalists, all holding recorders, notepads, and cameras.

The panel started smoothly enough. The moderator asked insightful questions about the tone of the film, the challenge of balancing dark comedy with domestic abuse, and the intense physical training Florence had undergone.

Florence handled her questions with her usual effortless charm, balancing humility with a sharp, undeniable confidence in her performance. Margot spoke eloquently about the development process, the difficulty of securing the life rights, and her vision for LuckyChap Entertainment.

But about forty minutes into the panel, the moderator opened the floor to the press.

A man in the third row raised his hand. He was an older journalist, wearing a tweed jacket, representing one of the legacy entertainment magazines. He had the kind of relaxed, slightly condescending posture of a man who had been in the industry for forty years and thought he knew exactly how the machine worked.

”Richard Evans, with the Chronicle,” he said, holding a microphone. He looked directly at Margot. ”Margot, congratulations on the film. It’s a very impressive... outing for a first-time producer.”

Margot smiled politely, though her eyes narrowed a fraction of an inch. She recognized the tone. ”Thank you, Richard.”

”It’s quite a massive undertaking,” Richard continued, flipping open his notepad. ”Period piece, complex practical effects on the ice, difficult subject matter. It’s the kind of project that usually requires a very experienced, heavy-handed producer behind the scenes to keep the wheels on the track.”

He paused, offering a knowing, slightly patronizing smile.

”Now, we all know your partner, Daniel Miller, is currently running the most successful studio on the planet,” Richard said smoothly. ”Given his incredible track record and his, let’s say, very hands-on approach to filmmaking... how much of his guidance did you rely on to get this movie across the finish line? Did he step in to ghost-produce when the physical logistics got a bit too heavy?”

The room went completely, uncomfortably silent.

Florence stiffened in her chair next to Margot. Her jaw clenched tight, and she turned her head slowly to stare at the journalist, her eyes flashing with a sudden, protective anger. She opened her mouth to say something sharp, ready to defend Margot instantly.

But Margot beat her to it.

Margot didn’t look angry. She didn’t look flustered. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, and looked directly at Richard with an expression of total, terrifying calm.

”That’s an interesting question, Richard,” Margot said. Her voice was perfectly level, pleasant, and laced with absolute steel. ”Let’s talk about the physical logistics.”

She didn’t look at her notes. She didn’t look away from him.

”When we moved into pre-production,” Margot began, her voice projecting clearly to the back of the room, ”I was tasked with securing the ice rinks in Atlanta for our training sequences. The initial budget allocated by the line producer for those locations was two hundred thousand dollars. I spent three weeks personally negotiating with the municipal arena managers and brought that cost down to eighty-five thousand, freeing up the capital we needed to hire our specific dialect coaches.”

Richard blinked, his patronizing smile faltering slightly.

”When it came to the VFX budget,” Margot continued, accelerating her pace just a fraction, refusing to let him interrupt, ”we couldn’t afford the standard face-replacement technology used by the major studios for the complex skating routines. So, I sat down with an independent visual effects house out of Toronto. I supervised the integration of a specialized mapping software that allowed us to blend Florence’s facial performance with our stunt double’s body seamlessly, coming in twenty percent under our post-production budget cap.”

The room was dead quiet. The only sound was the scratch of pens on paper. Florence was looking at Margot with a mixture of profound respect and absolute awe.

”Daniel is a brilliant director,” Margot said, her tone softening just enough to show genuine affection before hardening again. ”And I respect him immensely. But Daniel did not negotiate my union contracts. Daniel did not sit in the editing bay for sixteen hours a day fighting over the pacing of the climax. Daniel did not build this crew. I did.”

She held Richard’s gaze, making sure he understood exactly who he was talking to.

”LuckyChap Entertainment is an autonomous production banner,” Margot finished, leaning back in her chair. ”This movie exists because I found the script, I secured the financing, and I protected the vision. If you look at the screen and see a well-produced movie, Richard... you’re looking at my work. Nobody else’s.”

For a long, heavy moment, nobody said a word.

Then, Florence reached over, grabbed her microphone, and leaned in.

”Any other questions?” Florence asked cheerfully.

The tension broke. A few journalists in the back row actually let out low, appreciative laughs. Richard Evans cleared his throat, his face slightly flushed, and sat back down without a follow-up.

The rest of the panel went flawlessly. Nobody else brought up Daniel. They asked Margot about her producing methodology, and they treated her with the exact level of respect she had just demanded.

When it was finally over, they walked back down the hallway toward their suite. As soon as the heavy door closed behind them, shutting out the handlers and the noise, Florence let out a loud, ringing laugh.

She turned and grabbed Margot by the shoulders, shaking her slightly.

”You completely dismantled him!” Florence cheered, her eyes wide. ”I have never seen anything like it. You gave him a spreadsheet beating! He looked like he wanted to crawl under his chair.”

Margot let out a long, shuddering breath, the professional armor finally cracking as she kicked off her high heels. She walked over to the sofa and collapsed onto it, running a hand through her hair.

”I was so angry, Flo,” Margot admitted, looking up at the ceiling. ”I could feel my heart pounding in my throat. I just... I hate that assumption. I hate that no matter how hard I work, some guy in a tweed jacket assumes Dan must have done the heavy lifting.”

Florence walked over and sat down next to her, pulling her legs up onto the sofa. She looked at Margot, her expression entirely serious now.

”They won’t assume that anymore,” Florence said quietly. ”You didn’t just defend the movie, Margot. You put the entire industry on notice. You showed them that you know the mechanics of this business better than they do. You’re a shark.”

Margot turned her head, offering a small, tired smile. ”A very exhausted shark.”

”Well, the shark gets to order room service now,” Florence said, picking up the heavy hotel menu from the coffee table. ”We are getting hamburgers. The expensive ones with the truffle fries. And a very large bottle of wine.”

Margot laughed softly, closing her eyes. ”That sounds perfect.”

By late afternoon, the storm in Massachusetts had shifted from a freezing downpour to a steady, oppressive drizzle.

The production had moved inland, driving thirty miles to the town of Medfield. Standing at the end of a long, overgrown driveway was the Medfield State Hospital. Built in the late 1800s, it was a massive, sprawling complex of dark red brick, narrow windows, and slate roofs. It had been abandoned for years, and nature had started to reclaim it. Ivy crawled up the decaying walls, and the surrounding trees were stripped bare, looking like skeletal fingers against the gray sky.

It didn’t look like a movie set. It looked like a place where terrible things had happened.

Daniel stood in the center of one of the long, echoing interior hallways on the second floor. It was freezing inside the building, the air thick with the smell of old dust, damp wood, and peeling paint. The art department had spent weeks dressing the hallway, adding heavy iron bars to the doors, flickering fluorescent lights overhead, and vintage medical equipment stacked in the corners.

They were setting up for the scene where Teddy first walks through Ward C—the maximum-security wing reserved for the most violent, incurable patients.

Daniel was standing by the monitor village, watching the crew lay down dolly tracks along the cracked linoleum floor.

Leo was standing at the far end of the hallway, by himself.

He looked worse than he had on the boat. The exhaustion was setting in deep. He was pacing in small, tight circles, muttering his lines to himself under his breath. The trench coat was still damp from the morning shoot, but Daniel hadn’t let the wardrobe department change it. Teddy was supposed to be wet. Teddy was supposed to be miserable.

”Track is laid, Dan,” the key grip called out. ”Camera is mounted. We’re ready for blocking.”

”Alright,” Daniel said, stepping out into the hallway. ”Leo, let’s walk it.”

Leo stopped pacing and looked down the long corridor. He walked slowly toward Daniel, his boots echoing heavily on the floorboards.

”This is a continuous tracking shot,” Daniel explained, keeping his voice quiet so it wouldn’t carry through the empty building. ”The camera is going to pull back in front of you the entire length of the hallway. You are walking into the belly of the beast. The patients in these cells aren’t just crazy; they are completely lost. I want you to look into the cells as you walk. Don’t stop moving, but let us see the toll it takes on you.”

”Are the extras in the cells?” Leo asked, his voice low.

”They’re in there,” Daniel nodded. ”They know what to do. Some of them will reach for you through the bars. Some will just stare. Don’t interact with them. Just observe.”

Leo rolled his shoulders, working the stiffness out of his neck. ”Okay. Let’s do it.”

Daniel walked back to the monitors and put his headset on. He looked at the screens. The lighting was deeply atmospheric—heavy shadows, sickly yellow practical lights, and the pale, natural gray light filtering in through the barred windows at the end of the hall.

”Roll camera,” Daniel said.

”Speed.”

”Action.”

Leo started walking. The dolly grip pulled the camera back smoothly, keeping the lens locked tightly on Leo’s face.

As Teddy moved down the hallway, the background actors in the cells began their work. A hand reached out through the iron bars, fingers grasping at the empty air near Leo’s shoulder. A low, whimpering sound echoed from a dark corner. Someone muttered violently to themselves in the shadows.

Leo didn’t flinch, but his eyes betrayed him. He looked into the cells, his jaw tight, his expression carrying a mixture of professional disgust and deep, terrifying empathy. The paranoia was radiating off him. He walked like a man who was deeply afraid that he belonged in one of those cages.

He reached the end of the hallway, stopping in front of the final, heavy steel door. He stared at it, the muscles in his face twitching slightly.

”Cut,” Daniel said quietly into the microphone.

He took his headset off and looked at the monitor for a long time. The image was frozen on Leo’s face. The raw, unfiltered pain in his eyes was staggering.

The crew was silent, waiting for notes.

Daniel didn’t give any. He didn’t ask for another take. He just stood there in the freezing, damp hallway of an abandoned asylum, looking at the screen, feeling the heavy, undeniable weight of the story clicking into place.

It was going to be a hell of a story.

”We got it,” Daniel announced, his voice carrying down the hall. ”Moving on.”
