The Maker: Hollywood

Tom stared at the heavy leather folder on his desk. He didn’t blink. He just slowly turned the page, the thick matte paper rustling in the quiet of his executive office.

The second piece of concept art hit him even harder than the first. It was a massive, sprawling spaceport that looked like a 19th-century pirate cove crossbred with a grimy, neon-lit cyberpunk metropolis. Ships that looked like wooden galleons—but retrofitted with massive, glowing solar sails and heavy thruster engines—were docked at metallic piers.

Tom turned another page.

Character designs. A teenager wearing a heavy trench coat, riding a hovering piece of metal that looked like a futuristic surfboard, an expression of total, rebellious apathy on his face. Next to him was a hulking, terrifying figure. It was an alien cyborg. Half his body was a mess of pistons, hydraulic tubes, and raw iron, his glowing mechanical eye staring right off the page.

”Pirates,” Tom said, his voice flat, trying to process what he was looking at. ”Space pirates.”

”Treasure Planet,” Daniel corrected, walking over to the mini-fridge and grabbing a water. He cracked it open and took a sip. ”An adaptation of Treasure Island. But we’re pushing it out of the water and into the vacuum.”

Tom looked up, closing the folder and resting his hands on top of it. He took a deep breath.

”Dan, I am a massive fan of pirates. I like space. I like money,” Tom said, ticking the points off on his fingers. ”But you just spent the last three years building a reputation for directing dark, gritty, R-rated mind-benders and massive live-action blockbusters. If you follow up Shutter Island with a bubbly, singing cartoon for five-year-olds, the internet isn’t going to just have a meltdown, they are going to physically riot outside our gates.”

”Who said anything about five-year-olds?” Daniel asked, dropping onto the leather sofa across the room. ”And who said anything about singing?”

Tom stopped. ”It’s not a kids’ musical?”

”Fuck no,” Daniel said, shaking his head. ”Look at the cyborg, Tom. Does John Silver look like he’s about to burst into a tap routine? No. It’s an action-adventure epic. The target demographic is teenagers and up—thirteen, fourteen, young adults. The people who want a real adventure with actual stakes, but don’t want to be talked down to.”

Tom looked back down at the folder, tapping his index finger against the leather. The gears in his head were visibly shifting.

”The aesthetic,” Daniel continued, leaning forward. ”We aren’t doing the standard, hyper-realistic, rubbery 3D look that everyone else is doing. It’s going to be highly stylized. Cool. Sharp. It’s fully 3D, but the textures are going to feel hand-painted. We’re going to use cell-shading techniques on the character models so the lighting hits them like a high-contrast graphic novel, but the camera movements are going to be as fluid and aggressive as a live-action action movie. The action sequences are going to be violent and fast. The core of the movie isn’t a fetch quest. It’s the father-son dynamic between Jim and Silver. A kid who doesn’t have a dad, and a ruthless pirate who accidentally becomes one.”

Tom leaned back in his chair. He stared at the ceiling for a second, doing the mental math.

”The merchandising,” Tom muttered, mostly to himself. ”The teenagers. The crossover appeal. If the art style is as edgy as these concepts... Dan, this is a four-quadrant monster if we market it right.”

”I have the script locked,” Daniel said. ”The animation studio is already spinning up the proprietary rendering engines we’ll need to pull off the shading.”

”Wait, you’ve been working on the software without telling me?” Tom asked, raising an eyebrow.

”I own the studio, Tom, I don’t have to ask you for permission to write a check to the software engineers,” Daniel smirked.

”Fair point,” Tom conceded, sliding the folder to the side of his desk. ”Alright. Treasure Planet. I love it. It’s unexpected, it’s ballsy, and it proves you will never be stuck in one lane, as usual. But before you disappear into a dark room to stare at wireframes for the next however months, you have another problem to deal with.”

”I’m producing The Hulk,” Daniel nodded. ”I know.”

”Zack has the casting directors pulling their hair out,” Tom warned him. ”They’ve brought in six A-listers in the last four days, and Zack hates all of them. He says they look too cool.”

”He’s right,” Daniel said, standing up. ”I’ll go down to casting right now. We need to lock Banner by Friday so Zack can get his location scouts down to Brazil.”

The casting room on the ground floor of Building B was cold, dimly lit, and smelled like stale coffee.

Daniel sat in a folding chair next to a long plastic table. Zack Snyder was sitting next to him, violently clicking a ballpoint pen, looking extremely restless. The casting director, a woman named Ivy who had the patience of a saint, was sitting on the other side of Zack, looking over a stack of headshots.

”Okay, next up is...” Ivy looked at the sheet. ”Look, we all know him. He just got off that massive spy franchise. He’s got the chops.”

The door opened, and a wildly famous, conventionally handsome actor walked in. He was an A-lister. The kind of guy who commanded twenty million a picture. He was charming, he had a great smile, and he exuded a natural, effortless confidence.

”Hey guys,” the actor said, shaking hands with Zack and Daniel. ”Love the script, Dan. Really dark. I dig it.”

”Glad you liked it,” Daniel said politely. ”Whenever you’re ready. Scene 42. Banner is sitting in the motel room, and the local gangs just kicked the door in.”

The actor nodded, stepped back to the tape mark on the floor, and dropped into character.

He was good. He was a phenomenal actor. He delivered the lines with a gritty, intense edge. He looked tough. He looked like a guy who was warning the gang members because he didn’t want to hurt them, completely in control of the situation, a quiet badass hiding a secret weapon.

”Thanks, man. Great read,” Zack said when the scene finished.

The actor smiled, shook their hands again, and walked out.

The second the door clicked shut, Zack tossed his pen onto the table and rubbed his face.

”No,” Zack said bluntly.

”He’s too tough,” Daniel agreed, leaning back in his chair. ”He looks like he could take three guys in a bar fight without the Hulk.”

”Exactly,” Zack pointed at Daniel. ”Bruce Banner is a scientist. He shouldn’t have swagger. When he tells people not to make him angry, it shouldn’t sound like a threat. It should sound like a guy who is actively begging for his life because he knows a natural disaster is about to tear through the room.”

”Who’s next?” Daniel asked Ivy.

”Hugh Dancy,” Ivy said, pulling up the next headshot. ”He’s done a lot of prestige stuff. Incredible range. Highly respected, but he’s not an action guy.”

”Bring him in,” Daniel said.

A minute later, the door opened.

Hugh Dancy walked in. He didn’t have the swagger of the last guy. He was wearing a slightly oversized button-down shirt that looked a little wrinkled. His hair was messy. There were faint, dark circles under his eyes, and he had a restless, nervous energy. He didn’t stride into the room; he sort of hovered, offering a tight, polite smile.

”Hugh. Thanks for coming,” Daniel said.

”Of course. Thank you for having me,” Dancy said. His voice was soft, slightly clipped.

”Whenever you’re ready. Scene 42,” Zack said, leaning forward on his elbows.

Dancy stepped to the tape mark. He took a breath, closed his eyes for a second, and when he opened them, the entire temperature in the room changed.

He didn’t look tough. He looked terrified.

His eyes darted around the empty space as if he were actually cornered. He raised his hands, his fingers trembling slightly.

”You don’t understand,” Dancy whispered, his voice cracking with a desperate, frantic vulnerability. He wasn’t warning them; he was panicking. ”You need to leave. Please. You need to turn around and walk out that door right now.”

He reached a hand up to his chest, clutching the fabric of his shirt right over his heart, his breathing becoming shallow and erratic. He was sweating. The sheer, overwhelming fear of what was inside him was radiating off his face.

”My heart rate,” Dancy gasped out, stepping backward, stumbling slightly over his own feet, looking at the casting reader like they were holding a gun to his head. ”It’s going up. Please. I don’t want to hurt you. I can’t stop it.”

He collapsed against the imaginary wall, his eyes wide and haunted, shaking violently as the invisible monster began to tear its way out of his psyche.

The room was dead silent.

Dancy held the panic for three more seconds, then slowly let out a breath, dropped his hands, and gave an awkward, apologetic smile, returning to himself.

”Something like that?” Dancy asked quietly.

Zack was literally gripping the edge of the plastic folding table, his knuckles white. He looked at Daniel.

Daniel just nodded once.

”Hugh,” Zack said, standing up. ”Do you have any problems spending three months in a favela in Brazil?”

Dancy blinked, a genuine smile breaking across his face. ”I think I can manage that.”

”Good. Ivy will send your team the paperwork by the end of the day,” Daniel said, standing up to shake his hand. ”Welcome to the studio, Hugh.”

When Dancy left the room, Zack turned to Daniel, practically vibrating with excitement.

”That’s him,” Zack said, pacing the small room. ”That’s the guy. The contrast between that broken, terrified guy and a nine-foot-tall rage monster is going to be cinematic gold. I can visualize the cut right now. We push in tight on his terrified, sweating face, the green veins pop in his neck, and then—boom. Pure destruction.”

”Don’t lose that vulnerability in the edit,” Daniel told him. ”Let the audience feel bad for him before you let the monster out. Get your pre-production team together. You’re fully greenlit.”

Miller Studios was no longer the scrappy, single-building underdog it had been when Daniel first arrived in Los Angeles.

Now, Daniel stood on the top floor of a massive parking structure, looking out over the studio’s footprint. The main soundstages—the massive, airplane-hangar-sized buildings where they shot the Marvel interiors and the 300 green screens—were still located in the San Fernando Valley, where space was infinitely bigger.

But here in Burbank, Miller Studios had essentially eaten the entire neighborhood. Over the last half a decade, Daniel had bought up every surrounding office building, warehouse, and post-production facility within a mile radius of their original headquarters. It was a sprawling, highly secure campus of creativity.

He walked away from the railing and took the elevator down to the ground floor, crossing the private street to Building F.

Building F used to be an industrial storage facility. Now, it was the dedicated home of the animation department.

Daniel badged through the security doors and walked into the massive, open-plan floor. It was completely dark, save for the glow of three hundred high-end computer monitors. The room hummed with the sound of server racks and cooling fans. Concept art for Treasure Planet covered every inch of the whiteboards lining the walls.

It was chaotic, brilliant, and entirely Daniel’s element.

He walked down the aisle, stopping behind the chair of Finn, the lead rendering engineer.

”Show me the texture pass on the solar surfer,” Daniel said, leaning over Finn’s shoulder.

Finn clicked a few keys, bringing up a 3D model of Jim Hawkins’ hoverboard.

”We’ve locked the cell-shading algorithms,” Finn explained, spinning the 3D model on the screen. The board looked incredible—it had the depth and geometry of a 3D object, but the lighting hitting the metal engine block broke down into hard, sharp, comic-book-style shadows and hand-painted brush strokes. ”The proprietary engine is handling the dynamic lighting in real-time. When we drop it into the environment, the shadows won’t look perfectly smooth like Pixar. They’ll look jagged. Gritty. It looks like an illustration.”

”It’s perfect,” Daniel said, his eyes scanning the details. ”How’s the rigging on Silver’s cybernetic arm?”

”Complex,” a woman named Sana called out from the next desk over, spinning her chair around. ”You gave him too many moving parts, boss. We’re having to write custom physics scripts just to make sure the hydraulic tubes don’t clip through his coat when he bends his elbow.”

”I pay you guys the big bucks for a reason,” Daniel smiled. ”Keep pushing it. I want a fully rendered test sequence of the spaceport launch by the end of the month.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out.

It was a FaceTime call.

He stepped away from the desks, walking into his private, glass-walled office at the back of the room, and accepted the call.

The screen split into two.

On the top half, Margot was sitting in a brightly lit makeup chair, wearing a white robe. Two stylists were hovering around her, pinning her blonde hair up. The background looked incredibly ornate, like a European hotel.

On the bottom half of the screen, Florence was sitting in the back of a moving town car, wearing dark sunglasses and a heavy leather jacket, looking slightly exhausted.

”Look who finally answers his phone,” Florence teased, pulling her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose. ”I was beginning to think you moved back to the mountains.”

”I’m in the animation cave,” Daniel said, sitting down at his desk and propping the phone up against his coffee mug. ”It’s dark in here. What time is it in Paris, Margot?”

”Late,” Margot sighed, closing her eyes as a makeup artist dusted powder over her cheekbones. ”I have the Dior gala in three hours. My feet already hurt just looking at the heels they want me to wear.”

”You’re going to kill it,” Daniel smiled. ”How’s the press junket, Flo?”

”I have answered the same question about my character’s motivation forty-two times today,” Florence groaned, resting her head against the window of the car. ”If one more reporter asks me what it was like working with a green screen, I am going to lose my mind. Please tell me you’re having a worse day than I am.”

”Sorry to disappoint,” Daniel laughed. ”Zack just cast Hugh Dancy as the Hulk, and the rendering team finally cracked the shading engine for Treasure Planet. The studio is running like a machine.”

”Ugh. I hate when you’re successful,” Florence joked. ”I’m coming home on Thursday. We are ordering a massive pizza, and you are going to rub my shoulders until I fall asleep.”

”Deal,” Daniel said.

”I’ll be back Sunday,” Margot added, leaning into her camera. ”Miss you both. Don’t eat all the pizza before I get back.”

”Love you,” Daniel said.

”Love you,” they both replied in unison, and the screen went black.

Daniel smiled, tossing the phone onto his desk. They were the most powerful trio in Hollywood, but they were also incredibly busy. They had their own careers, their own massive trajectories, and Daniel loved that about them. They didn’t just sit around his house; they conquered the industry on their own terms.

Before Daniel could open his email, his desk phone rang. The caller ID showed it was coming from the production accounting department.

He picked it up. ”Miller.”

”Hey, Dan. It’s Greg, line producer for The Hulk,” a stressed voice came through the receiver.

”What’s up, Greg?”

”I’m looking at Zack’s pre-vis boards for the favela chase sequence in Brazil,” Greg said, shuffling papers on the other end of the line. ”It’s... well, it’s massive. He wants to blow up an entire alleyway practically. He wants physical stuntmen crashing through corrugated tin roofs, real vehicles flipping, and practical pyrotechnics in a highly populated urban center.”

”Sounds like Zack,” Daniel noted calmly.

”Dan, the logistics are a nightmare, and the insurance premiums alone are going to put us three million over the initial location budget,” Greg argued. ”I talked to the VFX team. We can shoot it on the backlot here in Burbank against a blue screen, comp in the favela backgrounds, and do the explosions digitally. It will save us almost four million dollars and a massive headache.”

Daniel leaned back in his chair, looking out through the glass walls of his office at his animation team working in the dark.

He didn’t have to call a board of directors. He didn’t have to ask a committee for budget approval. The studio belonged to him. The money was his.

And he knew exactly what digital explosions looked like compared to the real thing.

”Greg,” Daniel said, his voice flat and authoritative.

”Yeah, Dan?”

”We are making a movie about a massive, unbelievable CGI monster,” Daniel explained patiently. ”If the environment he’s destroying also looks like CGI, the audience is going to feel like they’re watching a video game cutscene. The only way to sell the reality of the Hulk is if the world around him is brutally, violently real. If Zack wants to blow up a real alleyway, let him blow it up.”

”Dan, it’s four million dollars,” Greg stressed.

”I’ll authorize the overage right now,” Daniel said, clicking open his production dashboard on his computer and typing in his administrative passcode. ”Do not compromise Zack’s practical setups. I brought him in for his kinetic, violent style, and I’m not going to hamstring him over location costs. Pay the insurance premiums, get the permits, and let Zack do his job.”

He clicked ’Approve’ on the digital budget ledger.

”Alright, boss. If you say so,” Greg sighed, sounding defeated but relieved he didn’t have to be the one to tell Zack Snyder no. ”I’ll wire the funds to the Brazilian location team.”

”Thanks, Greg.”

Daniel hung up the phone.

He stood up from his desk and walked back out into the main animation floor. He stopped in the center of the room, looking at the massive projector screen at the far wall.

They were running a test loop of the John Silver character model. The massive cyborg pirate was walking across a digital wooden deck, his heavy mechanical leg clanking against the floorboards, the cell-shaded lighting casting sharp, dynamic shadows across his terrifying, grinning face. It looked dangerous, cool, and entirely unique.

Daniel felt the familiar, addictive hum of momentum in his chest.

In Brazil, Zack Snyder was prepping to unleash a monster that would set the final stage for the greatest cinematic crossover event in history.

And here in a dark room in Burbank, Daniel was building a universe from scratch, exactly the way he had always wanted to.

He didn’t have to look backward at UCLA, or Julian Vane, or the years he spent in the mountains. He was standing at the absolute peak of the mountain, and he was just getting started.
