The Maker: Hollywood

The damp, freezing drizzle of a London morning was a sharp contrast to the dry heat of the San Fernando Valley.

Daniel sat in the back of the sleek black town car as it navigated the winding roads just outside the city, the windshield wipers rhythmically pushing away the grey mist. He leaned his head against the cool glass, holding a thermos of black coffee in one hand.

Through the trees, the massive, sprawling complex of Miller Studios UK finally came into view.

It had been a strategic move years ago to buy the massive plot of land and build a European hub for the studio. They didn’t need to rent space from Pinewood or Shepperton anymore. Miller Studios was its own self-contained ecosystem, capable of housing multiple blockbuster productions simultaneously without ever having to answer to an outside lot manager.

The car pulled through the heavily fortified security gates. The guards recognized the vehicle instantly, waving it through without asking for identification.

Daniel stepped out of the car, pulling the hood of his oversized grey sweatshirt up over his head to block the drizzle. He walked past the massive exterior facades and headed straight for Stage B, a colossal structure currently housing the sprawling, multi-level interior of a Hydra weapons factory.

He pushed the heavy stage doors open and stepped out of the cold into the warm, buzzing atmosphere of an active film set.

The crew was moving with frantic, organized precision. Grips were hauling heavy lighting cables, set decorators were adjusting massive, ominous steel crates stamped with the Hydra tentacle logo, and Joe Johnston was standing in the center of a catwalk, pointing at a storyboard and talking rapidly to the stunt coordinator.

Daniel didn’t announce his arrival. He kept his head down, walking past the video village and heading directly toward the hair and makeup trailers tucked into the back corner of the stage. He hadn’t seen this specific crew since they wrapped the pre-serum scenes three months ago in Los Angeles. Back then, he had been wearing a motion-capture suit, slouching to look fragile, and actively hiding the early results of his workouts.

He pushed the door to the main wardrobe trailer open.

It was warm inside, smelling of hairspray, expensive fabric, and hot coffee.

Standing in front of a full-length mirror, surrounded by two wardrobe assistants making minute adjustments to the hem of a tailored 1940s military uniform, was Hayley Atwell.

Hayley looked incredible. The sharp, olive-green uniform of Peggy Carter fit her perfectly, radiating an effortless, commanding authority. She was looking at her reflection, casually chewing on a piece of gum, when she caught Daniel’s movement in the mirror.

”Look who decided to finally show up,” Hayley said, turning around with a warm, teasing smile. ”I was starting to think you got lost over the Atlantic.”

”Flight was delayed. Blame the jet stream,” Daniel said, offering a tired smile as he set his thermos down on a small side table.

”Well, you’re late for your fitting,” Hayley noted, crossing her arms. She looked at the baggy, oversized grey hoodie he was wearing. ”And you look like you just rolled out of a university dorm room. Go on then, take the tent off. Let’s see what three months of avoiding me has done for you.”

Daniel let out a quiet breath. He reached down, grabbed the hem of the thick sweatshirt, and pulled it up and over his head, tossing it onto a nearby chair. He was wearing a fitted, plain white t-shirt underneath.

The conversation in the trailer completely stopped.

The two wardrobe assistants, who had been pinning Hayley’s skirt, froze with the needles in their hands.

Hayley’s teasing smile vanished. Her lips parted slightly, her eyes widening as they traveled from his waist, up the massive, dense width of his chest, to the absolute sheer span of his shoulders.

Daniel had always possessed the kind of face card that made other Hollywood leading men incredibly insecure—sharp jawline, intense eyes, structured features. But for years, he had carried the lean, slightly exhausted frame of a director who forgot to eat.

Now, he looked like a goddamn freight train. The white t-shirt was fighting a losing battle against his biceps, the fabric pulling tight across his chest, emphasizing a heavy, thick V-taper that looked entirely unnatural for a man who spent his life behind a camera.

Hayley blinked, letting out a breath that was half-laugh, half-shock. Her eyes snapped up to his face, a slight flush rising to her cheeks.

”Christ, Daniel,” Hayley said, her voice dropping a register, entirely abandoning her professional composure. ”Are you actually joking right now?”

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a little ridiculous under the sudden, intense scrutiny. ”Goggins doesn’t really believe in rest days.”

Hayley stepped closer, completely ignoring the wardrobe assistants. She reached out, her hand hovering for a second before she pressed her fingers against his bicep. She squeezed the muscle, her eyebrows shooting up toward her hairline.

”This is ridiculous,” Hayley muttered, looking up at him, a wicked, flirtatious spark lighting up her dark eyes. ”Margot and Florence must be absolutely insufferable right now. I would be guarding you with a loaded shotgun.”

”They’re dealing with it,” Daniel chuckled, gently stepping back toward his designated wardrobe rack. ”But thank you, Hayley. You look amazing, by the way. The uniform is perfect.”

”Oh, shut up,” Hayley laughed, waving a hand at him to fan herself slightly. ”Get in your costume before you cause a workplace accident. I need to go read my lines and try to remember how to form a coherent sentence.”

She gave him a brilliant, lingering look before turning and sweeping out of the trailer, the door clicking shut behind her.

Daniel let out a slow exhale, grabbing the heavy leather combat jacket off the rack.

Ten minutes later, he was fully dressed in the makeshift rescue suit. It wasn’t the iconic red, white, and blue uniform yet. This was the gritty, tactical gear Steve Rogers threw together to go behind enemy lines—heavy combat boots, thick canvas pants tucked into the laces, a dark leather jacket, and a distressed prop helmet holding a pair of aviator goggles.

He picked up the unpainted, distressed heater shield and strapped it to his left forearm.

He looked in the mirror. The transformation was absolute. The exhaustion was gone. The director was gone. He looked exactly like a soldier ready to kick the door down.

The door to the trailer swung open again.

Sebastian Stan walked in, holding a half-eaten apple. He was wearing the dirty, ragged uniform of a captured POW, his face covered in expertly applied dirt and fake sweat.

Sebastian stopped chewing. He looked Daniel up and down, taking in the tactical gear, the shield, and the sheer physical mass filling out the leather jacket.

”Bro,” Sebastian said, his voice flat.

”Hey, Seb,” Daniel smiled, adjusting the leather straps on the shield.

”I hate you,” Sebastian said, taking another bite of the apple. He walked further into the trailer, falling into one of the makeup chairs and throwing his legs over the armrest. ”I genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, hate you. Do you have any idea how much time I spent in the gym trying to look decent for this movie? And you just walk in looking like you eat iron plates for breakfast. You’re making me look bad.”

”You look fine, man. You’re playing a starved prisoner of war. It works for the character,” Daniel joked, leaning against the counter.

Their dynamic was incredibly easy. They didn’t have to navigate the usual Hollywood ego dance. They had been close friends for years, long before the cinematic universe, long before the billions. Sebastian was one of the few people on the lot who didn’t look at Daniel like a terrifying boss. He just looked at him like a friend.

”Yeah, well, I’m going to need you to slouch a little bit when we do the rescue scene,” Sebastian deadpanned, tossing the apple core into a nearby trash can. ”Otherwise, the audience is just going to ask why I didn’t hide behind your massive lats the entire time.”

”I’ll keep that in mind,” Daniel laughed. ”How’s the shoot been?”

”It’s been good,” Sebastian said, sitting up and stretching his neck. ”Joe is great. He moves fast. But it’s been weird not having you hovering over the video village complaining about the lighting. The crew is actually relaxed.”

”I don’t hover,” Daniel defended himself automatically.

”You hover, Dan,” Sebastian corrected him. ”You hover, and you glare, and you make the grips nervous. But today, you’re just a meathead actor like the rest of us. You have to shut up and hit your marks. Are you actually going to be able to do that?”

Daniel looked at the shield on his arm. ”I can do it. I’m looking forward to it. It’s less responsibility.”

”We’ll see,” Sebastian smirked, standing up. ”Come on, meathead. They need us on set. Time to go rescue me.”

They walked out of the trailer and onto the massive Stage B floor.

The Hydra factory set was incredible. It was a sprawling, multi-tiered metal structure filled with sparking machinery, glowing blue prop energy cores, and deep, dark shadows.

Joe Johnston was standing near the camera monitors, talking to Bob Elswit. Bob was lining up the massive crane shot that would track Daniel as he infiltrated the main floor of the factory.

”Alright, Daniel,” Joe called out as Daniel walked up. Joe looked at Daniel’s physical transformation, gave a slow, impressed nod, but didn’t say a word about it. He treated him exactly like an actor reporting for duty. ”We’re doing the infiltration sequence. You’re going to come over the railing, drop down behind those crates, take out two Hydra guards, and move toward the cell blocks. Simple, brutal, fast.”

”Got it,” Daniel said, walking over to the designated railing.

He stood in his starting position. He looked down at the floor below.

From his vantage point, Daniel could see the exact angle Bob Elswit had set up on the camera crane. The camera was angled slightly downward, capturing the top of the crates.

Daniel’s brain instantly kicked into overdrive.

If Bob shoots it from that high angle, Daniel thought, it’s going to compress the depth of field. It’s going to make the factory look smaller than it is. And the key light is completely washing out the blue glow of the energy cores in the background. It needs a darker contrast. We need to drop the camera down to knee height, shoot up to make the drop look more imposing, and kill that fill light by thirty percent.

Daniel opened his mouth. He looked at Bob. He was a split second away from walking off his mark, marching over to the camera, and telling his cinematographer to rebuild the entire lighting rig.

But he stopped.

He bit down hard on the inside of his cheek. He bit down so hard he literally tasted a metallic drop of blood.

He wasn’t the director. He wasn’t in charge of the visual language of this movie. He had handed the keys to Joe. If he undermined Joe on the very first day, in front of the entire crew, he would completely destroy the working dynamic of the set. He was the one who handed him this movie, and he needed to believe in him.

Daniel swallowed hard, closed his mouth, and looked straight ahead.

”Camera set,” Bob called out.

”And... action,” Joe yelled.

Daniel threw himself over the railing.

He landed heavily behind the steel crates, his boots hitting the grated floor with a loud, satisfying thud. He moved with a brutal, heavy efficiency, swinging the shield up to block a mock rifle strike from the first stuntman, driving his shoulder forward to drop the second. He didn’t think about the lighting. He didn’t think about the lens choice. He just focused entirely on the physical reality of the scene, moving through the blocking with a raw, intense aggression.

He cleared the guards and hit his final mark, breathing heavily, his eyes locked down the dark hallway of the cell block.

”Cut,” Joe yelled.

Daniel stood up, rolling his shoulders, waiting for the critique.

Joe walked out from behind the monitors. He looked at Daniel.

”The movement is great, Daniel. The physical weight is perfect,” Joe said, his tone entirely professional. ”But your posture at the end of the run is too rigid. You look like a trained assassin. Remember, Steve Rogers just got this body. He doesn’t know how to move perfectly yet. When you hit that final mark, I want you to be a little off-balance. I want you to look a little surprised by your own strength. Give me a fraction of hesitation before you look down the hall.”

Daniel absorbed the note. He didn’t argue. He didn’t explain his acting choices.

”Understood,” Daniel nodded. ”Reset.”

Joe let out a very small, almost invisible sigh of relief. He had been terrified that Daniel was going to try to co-direct the movie from in front of the lens. Seeing Daniel simply take the note and reset was the greatest gift a director could ask for.

They shot the take again. Daniel added the slight hesitation, the slight clumsiness to his massive frame, completely humanizing the super-soldier. It was perfect.

They moved relentlessly through the morning schedule, tearing through the stunt sequences.

By one in the afternoon, Joe called a mandatory lunch hour to allow the lighting crew to tear down the crane rig and set up for the cell block interiors.

Daniel, Sebastian, and Hayley bypassed the massive craft services tent where the crew was eating and headed for a small, quiet green room tucked away near the production offices.

The room had a couple of leather couches, a coffee table, and a small kitchenette.

Sebastian threw himself onto one of the couches, immediately digging into a massive styrofoam container of heavy pasta and garlic bread from the catering truck. Hayley sat in a plush armchair, elegantly eating a chicken salad while reviewing a few script pages.

Daniel sat on the other couch. He didn’t have pasta. He pulled a large Tupperware container out of his bag. It contained boiled chicken, unseasoned brown rice, and a massive pile of steamed spinach.

Sebastian took a huge bite of his garlic bread, chewing loudly while staring at Daniel’s food.

”That looks absolutely miserable,” Sebastian noted, pointing a piece of pasta at the Tupperware. ”You own the studio. You are a billionaire. You could hire a private chef to fly in a Wagyu steak right now, and you’re eating wet grass.”

”It’s fuel, Seb. Not entertainment,” Daniel said, opening the lid and forcing himself to take a bite of the dry chicken. ”Goggins has me on a strict macronutrient split. If I eat your garlic bread, he will somehow sense a disturbance in the force from Los Angeles, fly here, and make me run up the side of Big Ben.”

Hayley laughed, setting her script down. ”You have to admit, it’s working. The crew was literally whispering about you all morning. I think half the camera department is intimidated by you.”

”They’re intimidated because he fires people when they mess up,” Sebastian joked through a mouthful of food. ”The muscles are just a bonus.”

”I don’t fire people who do their jobs,” Daniel corrected dryly. He looked at Hayley. ”How is London treating you? Are the local press leaving you alone?”

”Mostly,” Hayley nodded, taking a sip of water. ”They’re circling the lot, trying to get telephoto shots of the costumes, but your security perimeter is insane. It’s actually quite nice being back home to shoot this. The energy in this city fits the 1940s aesthetic perfectly. And honestly, it’s just nice to have a break from the LA madness.”

”Tell me about it,” Daniel agreed, leaning back against the couch.

They spent the hour just shooting the shit. They talked about the terrible weather, Sebastian’s ridiculous workout playlist, and Hayley’s recommendations for a quiet pub in Soho where they could grab a drink without getting mobbed.

It was exactly what Daniel needed. The constant, crushing isolation of being the man in charge was temporarily suspended. Sitting on the cheap leather couch, eating terrible food with his friends, he was just part of the cast.

At two o’clock, the production assistants knocked on the door, calling them back to set.

The afternoon schedule was heavy. They were shooting the pivotal rescue scene in the cell block.

The set was dark, lit by harsh, flickering practical lights. Sebastian was strapped to a heavy, slanted medical table, hooked up to a dozen fake IV lines, playing Bucky’s disoriented, semi-conscious state after being experimented on by Zola.

”Action,” Joe called out.

Daniel kicked the heavy metal door open, the sound echoing loudly through the stage. He moved quickly, urgently, ripping the leather restraints off Sebastian’s wrists.

”Bucky,” Daniel said, his voice dropping the commanding tone of the hero and returning instantly to the terrified, desperate kid from Brooklyn. ”Buck, it’s me. It’s Steve. I thought you were dead”

Sebastian played the confusion brilliantly. He squinted through the harsh light, his body completely limp. ”Steve? I thought you were smaller.”

Sebastian stayed completely dead weight, forcing Daniel to take the physical load.

Daniel grabbed Sebastian by the straps of his harness. He didn’t use movie magic. He didn’t rely on the stunt wires attached to Sebastian’s back. Daniel planted his boots, engaged his massive back and shoulders, and hauled Sebastian completely off the table. He threw his friend’s arm over his shoulder and practically carried him out of the room with a frightening lack of effort.

It made the super-soldier serum look entirely, undeniably real.

”Cut,” Joe yelled, walking onto the set with a massive smile. ”That was incredible. The physical lift was perfect, Dan. Seb, great dazed look.”

”Thanks,” Sebastian muttered, standing upright and rubbing his ribs. He looked at Daniel. ”You didn’t have to literally crack my spine, you monster.”

”You went dead weight,” Daniel shrugged with a smirk. ”I just picked you up.”

The day ground on, the scenes getting progressively larger and more complex.

By seven in the evening, the crew was exhausted, running entirely on coffee and adrenaline. They had moved to the largest section of the Hydra set—the massive, suspended metal catwalk spanning a dark, smoking chasm.

It was time for the confrontation.

Hugo Weaving was on set. He was in full, terrifying Red Skull makeup. The crimson prosthetics looked incredibly painful, stretching tightly across his face, emphasizing his sharp, predatory eyes. Hugo carried a heavy, theatrical gravity with him. He didn’t joke around between takes. He stayed completely in character, radiating a cold, arrogant menace that immediately silenced the crew.

They took their marks on the catwalk. The massive green screens surrounded them, waiting for the VFX team to paint in the flames and the destruction of the factory later.

”Action,” Joe called over the loudspeaker.

Hugo didn’t just speak his lines; he chewed the scenery, delivering every word with a grand, terrifying theatricality. He stepped toward Daniel, his posture arrogant and superior, holding a glowing prop weapon.

”Captain America,” Hugo sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. ”How exciting. I am a great fan of your films. So, the Erskine reveals his masterpiece.”

Daniel stood his ground.

He didn’t try to out-act Hugo. He didn’t puff his chest out, and he didn’t deliver a grand, heroic speech. He knew that the only way to balance the Red Skull’s megalomania was to anchor Steve Rogers in absolute, stubborn reality.

Daniel let a slow, ragged breath out. He lowered his shield just an inch. He looked Hugo dead in the red eyes, his expression completely flat, completely unbothered by the theatrics. He wasn’t a god. He wasn’t a king. He was just a kid from a Brooklyn alleyway who was tired of bullies.

”You don’t have one of those, do you?” Daniel said, his voice quiet, steady, and laced with a subtle, dismissive Brooklyn edge.

The contrast was electric. The quiet defiance against the loud arrogance created a massive, suffocating tension on the catwalk. Hugo’s eyes narrowed, reacting organically to Daniel’s refusal to be intimidated.

They played the scene flawlessly.

When Joe finally called a wrap on the interior factory scenes for the week, the crew erupted into applause. It had been a brutal, fast-paced shooting schedule, and they had captured lightning in a bottle.

But the week wasn’t over.

The next morning, Friday, was dedicated entirely to exterior location work.

The production had moved to a massive, muddy field an hour outside of London, dressed to look like the Allied military camp in Italy.

The scene was the triumphant return of Steve Rogers, marching into the camp with the hundreds of rescued men from the 107th Infantry trailing behind him. In the script, it was an incredibly emotional, powerful moment.

In reality, it was absolute physical torture.

The London weather was freezing, hovering around forty degrees. The ground was thick, sucking mud that threatened to pull their boots off with every step. And because the script called for rain, the special effects team had suspended two massive rain machines from construction cranes, dumping thousands of gallons of freezing, freezing water directly onto the actors.

”Action,” Joe yelled from inside the heated, dry video village tent.

Daniel led the march. The freezing water hit him like a barrage of tiny needles. His heavy leather jacket was instantly soaked, adding twenty pounds of dead weight to his frame. The mud grabbed at his boots, making every single step a grueling physical effort. Behind him, Sebastian and a hundred shivering extras fell into line.

Daniel held his head high, the shield strapped to his arm, forcing a look of stoic determination onto his face while his teeth literally wanted to chatter.

They marched across the field. The camera tracked them from a muddy trench.

”Cut,” Joe yelled over the roar of the rain machines. ”Reset. Daniel, you looked down at the mud on step four. Keep your eyes on the horizon. Let’s go back to one.”

They did it again.

And again.

And again.

They shot the march sequence for six uninterrupted hours. The rain never stopped. Between setups, the wardrobe assistants would run out with heavy thermal blankets and hot tea, but it barely made a dent in the bone-deep cold.

By the time Joe finally called a wrap on the day as the sun started to set, Daniel felt completely broken.

He trudged back to his massive, luxurious star trailer, his boots leaving thick clumps of mud on the metal steps. He pushed the door open, stripped the soaking wet leather jacket and the heavy tactical pants off, and stood under the scalding hot shower in the small bathroom for twenty minutes until he could finally feel his toes again.

He stepped out, throwing on a dry pair of grey sweatpants and a heavy hoodie. He collapsed onto the small couch in the living area of the trailer, wrapping a thick fleece blanket around his shoulders. Every single muscle in his body was aching. His shoulders were burning from carrying the heavy prop shield, his lower back was throbbing from the mud, and he was completely, utterly exhausted.

He leaned his head back against the wall, staring at the ceiling.

He had a massive, profound moment of clarity.

Directing was mental warfare. It was a million decisions a minute, managing egos, budgets, and schedules. It drained your soul and kept you awake at night.

But leading an action movie? Leading a blockbuster franchise from the front?

It was pure physical torture.

Daniel suddenly had an entirely newfound, massive amount of respect for the actors he usually ordered around on set. He thought about Stephen Walker doing wire stunts for twelve hours a day. The physical toll of the job was staggering when you actually had to stand in front of the lens and take the hits.

He reached across the small table and grabbed his cell phone.

He tapped a button, initiating a group FaceTime call.

It rang twice before the screen split.

Margot was sitting on the edge of the bed in Bel Air, wearing a silk robe, looking like she had just woken up. Florence was in the kitchen, holding a mug of tea, the California morning sun streaming through the windows behind her.

”Look at you,” Florence smiled immediately, bringing the phone closer to her face. ”You look terrible, darling. Did you get hit by a bus?”

”I got hit by Joe Johnston and a rain machine,” Daniel groaned, rubbing a hand over his face. He didn’t try to hide his exhaustion from them. ”I was in the mud for six hours. It was forty degrees. My boots weighed thirty pounds.”

Margot laughed softly, her voice raspy from sleep. ”Aww. Is the big, tough studio boss realizing that acting is actually hard work?”

”It is awful,” Daniel admitted, closing his eyes. ”I just have to stand there and look heroic while freezing to death. I wanted to yell cut and fire the special effects guy who was running the rain tower so badly.”

”But you didn’t,” Florence pointed out gently.

”No,” Daniel sighed. ”I didn’t. I just kept marching.”

”I’m proud of you, Dan,” Margot smiled warmly. ”How is the footage looking, though?”

”It looks incredible,” Daniel said, opening his eyes and looking at the two women on the screen. The exhaustion in his bones was real, but a quiet, deeply satisfied smile found its way onto his face. ”Joe is crushing it. Seb is great. Hugo Weaving is terrifying. It’s going to be a massive movie.”

He shifted on the couch, pulling the blanket tighter around his shoulders.

”I miss you both,” Daniel said quietly, the distance between London and Los Angeles suddenly feeling very wide.

”We miss you too,” Florence said, her voice softening completely. ”We have the rings to keep us company, but the house feels empty without you stomping around in the morning complaining about your green smoothies.”

”Two more weeks of exterior shoots, and then I’m back in LA for the green screen work,” Daniel promised. ”I love you.”

”We love you, Dan. Go to sleep,” Margot said.

”Get some rest, Captain,” Florence teased gently.

The screen went black.

Daniel set the phone down on the table. He was bruised, freezing, and exhausted. He was going to wake up tomorrow at five in the morning to do it all over again. But sitting in the quiet trailer, listening to the rain hit the metal roof, he realized he actually loved the simplicity of it.

He just had to be the guy holding the shield.
