The Maker: Hollywood

The heavy oak doors to Conference Room B on the Miller Studios lot were shut tight, flanked by two studio security guards trying very hard to look invisible.

Inside, Tom was pacing a hole into the carpet. He had a matte-black steel lockbox tucked under his arm and a clipboard in his hand. He looked like he hadn’t slept since Tuesday.

”I love the guy, Dan. I really do,” Tom said, stopping to point a pen at Daniel. ”But Mark is a walking leak. He doesn’t even know how his own phone works. He is going to pocket-dial TMZ while we’re on page ten, and the entire twist of this movie is going to be trending on Twitter before lunch.”

Daniel was casually tossing bottles of water onto the massive mahogany table, dropping them next to the printed name cards. He didn’t look up. ”Relax, Tom. Just take his phone at the door.”

”Oh, I’m taking his phone,” Tom muttered, patting the lockbox. ”I’m taking his watch. If the man walks in here with a Tamagotchi, I’m confiscating it. We’ve kept this script buried in a vault. The internet still thinks you’re making a musical. I am not letting Ruffalo blow our cover because he wanted to post a selfie.”

Daniel laughed, shaking his head. Before he could respond, the heavy doors clicked open. Elena poked her head in, gave Daniel a quick nod, and stepped aside.

Sir Ben Kingsley walked in. He didn’t stride or swagger; he just sort of glided. He was wearing a sharply tailored grey suit, carrying a battered leather satchel, and looking exactly like a man who commanded absolute respect just by breathing.

”Ben,” Daniel smiled, walking over and shaking his hand. ”Thanks for making the flight.”

”Daniel. Good to see you,” Kingsley said. His voice was smooth, resonant, and effortless. ”I read the draft on the plane. It’s nasty business, isn’t it? Very clinical. The dialogue feels quite sharp.”

”That’s exactly what I wanted for Cawley,” Daniel told him, pulling out a chair. ”He needs to sound like the most reasonable guy in the room. Right up until he doesn’t.”

Kingsley smiled—a thin, polite thing that didn’t quite reach his eyes. ”The sane men rarely have to shout, do they?” He sat down, pulled out his reading glasses, and set them gently on the table.

Michelle Williams slipped in next. She looked incredibly normal—baggy cream sweater, faded jeans, carrying a beat-up canvas tote. But she gave Daniel a warm hug, waved shyly to Kingsley, and immediately sat down, pulling a pencil out of her messy bun to take notes. She had this quiet, fragile energy to her that made Daniel instantly confident she was going to rip people’s hearts out as Dolores.

Then, the door opened again, and the air in the room got heavier.

Leonardo DiCaprio walked in. He looked terrible, which meant he looked perfect. He was in a faded black t-shirt and a worn Dodgers cap pulled way down. His hair was getting shaggy, curling over his collar, and he had a patchy, rough beard coming in. But it was the way he held himself—hunched shoulders, tight jaw, eyes darting around the room like he was looking for exits.

Teddy Daniels was already bleeding into him.

Leo didn’t say hi. He gave Daniel a short, tight nod, bumped his knuckles against Tom’s arm, and dropped into the chair across from Kingsley. He opened his script and just stared at it.

Five minutes ticked by. Tom tapped his foot.

The door banged open.

”Sorry! Man, I am so sorry,” Mark Ruffalo jogged in, slightly out of breath, his jacket sliding off one shoulder. He was holding an iced coffee that looked dangerously close to spilling. ”Your lot is a maze, Dan. The GPS completely screwed me. I ended up in the animation building. I was literally watching some guy draw a cartoon dog for ten minutes before security realized I didn’t work there.”

Tom’s eye actually twitched. ”Mark. Did you take any pictures of the dog?”

”What? No, man, why would I do that?” Mark laughed, walking up to the table. He stopped, looking at the black steel box under Tom’s arm. ”Whoa. What’s the lockbox for?”

”Contraband,” Tom said, deadpan. He opened the lid. ”Phones, smartwatches, iPads. If it connects to the internet, put it in the box.”

Mark blinked, looking around at Leo and Kingsley, who were completely silent, and then back at Tom. ”Are we reading a script or robbing a bank?”

”Just put the phone in the box, Mark,” Leo muttered, not even looking up from his pages. A tiny smirk flashed across Leo’s face. ”Tom hasn’t slept. He’ll bite you.”

”Jeez. Alright, alright,” Mark chuckled, pulling his phone out and dropping it into the felt-lined box. Tom slammed it shut and locked it with a loud click.

”Appreciate it,” Tom said. ”Welcome to Ashecliffe.”

Daniel walked to the head of the table and sat down. He looked at the group. He didn’t need to do the whole ’rah-rah’ director speech. These were professionals.

”Alright, guys. You know the drill,” Daniel said, keeping his voice low and casual. ”We head to Boston next week. Today is just about finding the rhythm. Don’t blow out your vocal cords trying to hit the massive emotional peaks. Just feel out the space between the dialogue. Only rule is: what happens in this room, stays in this room. Let’s hit it.”

For the next two hours, the sunny California morning ceased to exist.

The room turned into a freezing, rain-battered psychiatric ward in 1954. Mark and Leo clicked instantly. Mark brought this easy, almost goofy warmth to Chuck Aule that perfectly balanced out Leo’s aggressive, wound-up paranoia. You could practically hear the rain hitting their trench coats when they talked.

But when Leo and Kingsley went at it during the interrogation scene, the room went dead silent.

Kingsley didn’t raise his voice once. Not even a fraction. He just delivered Cawley’s lines with this chilling, polite smoothness that completely sucked the air out of the room. Leo pushed back hard, his voice getting thick and desperate, trying to bully his way to the truth. Two guys sitting in leather chairs, trying to gut each other with words.

When Michelle Williams read her scenes, her voice dropped to a wet, quiet whisper. She laced her lines with this surreal, tragic grief that genuinely made Tom shift uncomfortably in his seat by the door.

By the time they hit the final act—the lighthouse sequence, where the floor drops out and the trap closes—nobody moved. Nobody drank their water.

Leo read his final line. His voice cracked, hollow and totally broken. He just stared at the wood grain of the table, breathing shallowly.

Daniel let the silence hang for a long, heavy ten seconds.

”And cut,” Daniel said softly.

Mark blew out a massive breath, pushing his chair back and scrubbing both hands through his hair.

”Holy shit, man,” Mark breathed, looking across at Leo. ”That ending is... it’s messed up. Seriously. I read it at home on Tuesday and I had to go walk my dog for an hour just to get my heart rate down.”

”It’s a heavy lift,” Leo agreed, rubbing his eyes hard with the heels of his hands. He finally leaned back, looking completely drained just from sitting there. He looked at Kingsley. ”Ben, your pacing in that lighthouse scene is terrifying. You didn’t even blink.”

”The truth doesn’t need to rush, Leonardo,” Kingsley smiled, tapping the cover of his script. ”The louder Teddy gets, the quieter Cawley has to be. But you gave me wonderful energy to push against.”

Daniel watched them decompress, feeling that solid, deep satisfaction in his chest. The tone was there. The pieces fit. Now he just had to put them on an island and let it rain.

”Great work today, guys,” Daniel said, standing up. ”Wardrobe fittings are down the hall. Mark, Tom will give you your phone back when you are physically sitting inside your car.”

”You guys are sick,” Mark laughed, grabbing his jacket.

By four o’clock that afternoon, the heavy, psychological dread of Shutter Island had been completely replaced by domestic warfare.

Daniel was standing in the kitchen of Stan’s Bel Air house. The sliding glass doors were wide open to let the canyon breeze in, but the vibe inside was tense.

Spread across the massive marble island were five identical white bakery boxes, each containing a different, elaborate slice of cake.

Tom was slumped on a barstool, staring at the boxes like they had personally offended him. He looked utterly defeated.

Sarah was standing across from him, holding a silver cake knife and a clipboard. She looked like a general commanding a battlefield. Margot and Florence were sitting at the dining table, sharing a bowl of grapes, watching the whole thing like it was prime-time television. Margot was practically vibrating with amusement.

”Sarah. Look at me. Look into my eyes,” Tom pleaded, rubbing his temples. ”My tastebuds are dead. I don’t know what Madagascar Vanilla is. I don’t know what Tahitian Coconut is. To me, right now? They are both just white blocks of sugar. Pick one. Please.”

”Tom, you’ve tasted three,” Sarah said, tapping her pen against the clipboard. ”We are feeding two hundred people. If the cake is dry, my mother will bring it up at Thanksgiving for the next thirty years. You need to focus.”

”It’s cake!” Tom threw his hands up. ”People just want to get drunk and dance. Nobody cares about the crumb structure!”

”It’s a metaphor for your marriage, Thomas,” Florence chimed in from the table, her British accent making it sound like a serious critique. ”Don’t pick the boring one. It sets a bad precedent.”

Tom pointed an accusing finger at her. ”Don’t help her.”

He turned his desperate gaze to Daniel, who was leaning against the fridge, drinking a glass of water and trying very hard not to laugh.

”Dan. Buddy,” Tom begged. ”You’re rich. You eat fancy stuff. Tag in.”

”I am not picking your wedding cake, man,” Daniel said, holding his free hand up.

”I stole Mark Ruffalo’s phone for you today!” Tom yelled, standing up. ”He called me a fascist! I took that bullet for the studio! Eat the damn cake!”

Daniel sighed, setting his water down. He walked over to the island.

Margot leaned forward on her elbows, grinning. ”This is gonna be good. The guy who runs the MCU is about to get taken out by a buttercream.”

Sarah immediately handed Daniel a small silver fork. ”Okay, Dan. Box four. Dark chocolate ganache, salted caramel center, espresso sponge.”

Daniel took the fork, cut a piece of the heavy, dark cake, and ate it. He chewed slowly. The kitchen went totally silent, waiting for the verdict.

He swallowed. ”It’s good,” he said. ”But it’s too heavy.”

”Too heavy?” Sarah asked, scribbling on her clipboard.

”Logistics,” Daniel pointed at the cake with his fork. ”You’re serving a big dinner. Steak, potatoes, wine. If you hit them with a heavy chocolate ganache after that, they’re going to take two bites and tap out. You want them out on the dance floor, not slipping into a food coma at table six.”

Tom pointed at Daniel, looking at Sarah triumphantly. ”See? Analytics. The man understands crowd control.”

”Okay, valid,” Sarah conceded, crossing out box four. ”What about box two? Meyer lemon chiffon, raspberry compote, whipped mascarpone.”

Daniel took a bite of the lemon cake. He paused, actually thinking about it.

”The lemon cuts the sugar,” Daniel nodded. ”It’s light. And the mascarpone is gonna hold its shape better than standard buttercream, so if the reception tent gets hot, it won’t melt all over the table.”

”My god, he’s actually good at this,” Margot laughed, shaking her head.

”I vote lemon,” Daniel said, setting the fork down.

”Lemon’s good,” a raspy voice called out.

They all turned. Stan was shuffling into the kitchen in his slippers and an old cardigan. He walked straight up to the island, reached right into box number two with his bare hand, grabbed a massive chunk of the lemon cake, and shoved it in his mouth.

”Stan!” Sarah gasped. ”I was gonna cut you a piece!”

”I don’t need a knife,” Stan mumbled, chewing loudly. He grabbed a napkin, wiped his fingers, and pointed at Tom. ”Lemon wins. Stop overthinking it, kids. It’s just dessert.”

He turned around and shuffled right back out to the living room.

Tom threw his hands up in total surrender. ”The boss has spoken. We’re doing the lemon. Can we close the boxes now? If I look at fondant again today, I’m gonna quit my job.”

”Fine,” Sarah smiled, closing her clipboard. ”Lemon it is. Thanks, Dan. You saved his life.”

”Just doing my part,” Daniel said, walking over to the sink to wash his hands.

He dried his hands and pulled up a chair at the dining table, sitting between Margot and Florence. Florence pushed the bowl of grapes toward him with a soft smile.

Margot picked a grape off the stem, looking thoughtfully at the kitchen where Tom and Sarah were now packing up the boxes.

”Watching them stress out over catering makes you realize how complicated this is gonna be for us, huh?” Margot said quietly.

Daniel leaned back in his chair. The kitchen was quiet now. The late afternoon sun was hitting the windows, making Margot’s blonde hair look golden and softening Florence’s sharp profile.

He was engaged to both of them. It was a life they had built together behind closed doors—private, fiercely loyal, and totally unconventional. They didn’t care what the public thought, but from a purely legal standpoint, a three-way marriage in the United States was a logistical nightmare.

”It’s a headache,” Florence agreed, resting her chin on her hand. She looked at Daniel. ”Legally, we can’t do it, Dan. California won’t let you marry two people. We’ve talked about doing a symbolic thing, but Margot and I... we want the actual protections. We don’t want to just throw a nice party.”

”Exactly,” Margot nodded, putting her hand on Daniel’s arm. ”If something happens to you, or to one of us, we want the medical proxies. We want the estate rights. We don’t want to be legally viewed as one wife and one ’companion’. We’re equals.”

Daniel didn’t look stressed. He didn’t look like a guy trying to solve an impossible puzzle. He just looked at them, entirely calm.

”You don’t need to worry about the legality of it,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into that low, steady tone he used when he had already fixed a problem.

Florence raised an eyebrow. ”Dan, it’s federal law. Even you can’t just throw money at a judge to ignore polygamy laws.”

”I’m not bribing anyone, Flo,” Daniel laughed softly, covering Margot’s hand with his own. ”I had the estate guys start looking at the architecture of this three months ago. You’re right, we can’t walk into a courthouse in LA and ask for a license. But we can build a customized, irrevocable trust. It legally binds the three of us together—financials, medical proxies, power of attorney. We grant each other joint-survivorship rights over the estate. On paper, it’s an absolute fortress. It gives you both the exact same legal weight as a standard marriage.”

Margot stared at him, her eyes widening a little. ”You... you already had lawyers draft this?”

”I’ve been working on it,” Daniel nodded. ”Nobody can challenge it. You two will have absolute, unassailable rights to me, and to each other.”

”Okay, but what about the actual wedding?” Margot asked, her voice softening. ”The ceremony?”

”We leave the country,” Daniel said simply. ”We rent a private island in the Maldives. Or we charter a yacht into international waters off the coast of France. We fly the people who actually matter out there. We stand up, we say our vows, and we sign the trust documents. It’ll be real. And it’ll be ours.”

Margot let out a slow, shaky breath. She leaned over and pressed a long kiss to his cheek. ”You really do just fix everything, don’t you?”

”I try,” Daniel murmured.

Florence reached across the table, grabbing his other hand and squeezing it hard. ”An island in the Maldives sounds a hell of a lot better than a courthouse in Burbank anyway.”

”It’ll take a little time to finalize the paperwork,” Daniel told them. ”And I’ve got to go freeze to death in Boston first. Margot, you’ve got the Tonya press tour. But when the dust settles this winter... we pull the trigger.”

”Deal,” Margot smiled, wiping a quick tear from the corner of her eye. ”But right now, you need to go pack your bags. Because you fly out tomorrow and I know for a fact you haven’t packed a single sweater.”

”I have people for that,” Daniel joked, but he stood up anyway.

Late the next night, the Burbank lot was dead. The massive soundstages were dark silhouettes against the starry California sky.

Daniel stood on the wet tarmac at the Van Nuys private terminal. The Miller Studios Gulfstream jet was idling, the high whine of the engines cutting through the cold night air.

Tom stood next to him, gripping a heavy leather briefcase loaded with the final shooting schedules and encrypted drives.

A black SUV rolled through the chain-link gate and stopped near the plane. The back door popped open.

Leo climbed out.

If he had looked tired at the table read, he looked completely haunted now. He was wearing an oversized, wrinkled trench coat from the 1950s that hung off his frame. A wide-brimmed fedora was pulled down, shadowing his eyes. The stubble was thicker. He walked with a heavy, dragging step, his eyes darting around the dark tarmac with that same nervous, twitchy energy.

He walked up to Daniel and Tom. No smile. No ”hey man.”

”Weather report updated an hour ago,” Leo said. His voice was different. He had dropped his normal cadence for a thick, unpolished Boston accent, layered with a rough rasp. ”Massive storm front moving into the harbor on Thursday. Gale force winds. Heavy rain. Coast guard’s putting out warnings.”

”I saw it,” Daniel said. His own posture shifted. The easygoing guy from the kitchen was gone. The director clicked into place, matching Leo’s intensity instantly. ”We’re shooting right through it.”

Leo looked up from under the brim of the fedora. ”No rain machines?”

”No rain machines,” Daniel confirmed. ”We shoot the ferry arrival practically. We use the real storm. I want the cold on camera. I want the misery on your face to be real.”

Leo stared at him for a second. Then, he gave a slow, grim nod. ”Good. Let’s go to work.”

He turned and walked heavily up the metal stairs of the jet, vanishing into the cabin without looking back.

Tom let out a low whistle, shaking his head. ”Jesus. He is fully in the zone, Dan. Guy looks like he hasn’t slept a full night in a week.”

”He hasn’t,” Daniel said quietly, zipping up his jacket against the wind. ”That’s why he’s the best. That’s Teddy Daniels walking onto that plane.”

”Well, try not to let him completely lose his mind on that island,” Tom grinned, tapping the briefcase against his leg. ”I’ll hold down the fort here. Call me when you land.”

”Will do,” Daniel nodded, turning toward the stairs.

”Go make a masterpiece, Dan,” Tom called out over the roar of the engines.

Daniel walked up the steps and stepped into the cabin, pulling the heavy door shut behind him. The latches locked with a solid, airtight thud, instantly cutting off the noise of Los Angeles.

As the jet taxied down the runway, Daniel walked back to his leather seat. He didn’t pull out his laptop or check his phone. He pulled the black, brass-bound script out of his bag and dropped it onto his lap.

The jet engines roared, pressing him back into his seat as the plane lifted off the tarmac, banking sharply east toward the cold, rocky coastline of Massachusetts.

It was time to open the doors to Ashecliffe.
