Chapter 1790: Chapter 1790: Eldest Sister-in-Law’s Might

Jiang Yichun only stayed for a quarter of an hour before leaving, without even saying goodbye to the Bai elders. Bai Ruozhu didn’t dare tell her parents about this, fearing they would worry about Bai Zebo to the point of losing their appetite and not sleeping well. During dinner, she merely mentioned that Jiang Yichun had taken an assignment out of town and wouldn’t be home for the next few days.

Bai Zepei had just returned from the Guest Palace and was aware of the situation. He shared the same sentiment as his younger sister and didn’t want to make the elders worry.

During dinner, she ate absentmindedly and had to force a smile, afraid her parents might notice something was amiss.

”Ugh...” Lin Ping’er suddenly retched and then quickly left the table and ran out.

Everyone was stunned and immediately put down their chopsticks to follow her out.

”Mother, what’s the matter? Is your stomach upset?” Bai Ruozhu asked while taking her mother’s wrist to check her pulse.

Lin Ping’er spat out a bit of sour water and said with some regret, ”I’m getting old, my digestion isn’t good. It must be the glutinous rice cake I tried in the afternoon that didn’t digest well and caused acidity.”

Bai Ruozhu’s expression changed slightly, then she smiled, ”Mother, don’t say you’re old, I’m going to have a little brother or sister soon.”

”Ah?” Lin Ping’er didn’t quite catch on, but Bai Yihong’s eyes brightened as he rushed over, ”Ruozhu, say it clearly, your mother is expecting?”

Bai Ruozhu smiled and nodded, ”Yes, mother has a joyous pulse!”

Bai Yihong’s face lit up with joy, ”This is wonderful!”

Lin Ping’er only then realized, blushing furiously. She raised her hand to hit Bai Yihong, angrily saying, ”Why shout such nonsense, the children are all grown up, aren’t you embarrassed?”

Bai Yihong grinned foolishly with his white teeth showing, ”I’m going to be a father again, I’m really happy.”

Bai Zehao and Bai Zepei hurriedly helped Lin Ping’er inside to sit, with Bai Yihong pushing Bai Zehao aside and saying with a silly grin, ”Let me help, let me help, be careful.”

Lin Ping’er glared at him with a red face but her eyes were full of joy, unexpectedly able to conceive again in this lifetime.

She had been quite weak in the past, fortunate her daughter had been looking after her health for the past two years.

Bai Ruozhu pressed her lips and snickered, thinking her mother is not even forty yet and pregnant again is normal. Some people have children even in their fifties.

At this point, Guizhi and Wa San happened to come over, congratulating after hearing the good news, and Bai Yihong smiled and said, ”Guizhi, you should work harder too, Wa San isn’t getting any younger, eager to have a son!”

Lin Ping’er subtly elbowed Bai Yihong, thinking he must be too overwhelmed with joy to say such things. What if Guizhi’s firstborn is a girl?

Bai Yihong laughed foolishly, clearly not understanding why his wife was nudging him.

Wa San was candid, ”Father, you’re right, we’re trying our best.”

Everyone burst into laughter, with Guizhi blushing all the way to her neck and angrily hitting Wa San.

While the family was having dinner, Bai Ruozhu mentioned Jiang Yichun’s trip, though she didn’t detail where he was going, and everyone wisely didn’t ask further.

Midway through the meal, a maid came to report that the lady of the Xue Family was causing another scene, saying she wanted to hang herself.

”Didn’t they say someone would lose the will to live after surviving one attempt? Why is she still making trouble?” Lin Ping’er said displeased.

The maid who reported was quick-witted, responding, ”She somehow heard that the eldest son-in-law went away without saying goodbye to her, thinking he doesn’t respect her as a mother.”

Bai Ruozhu chuckled, ”She ignored her son for ten years and didn’t want to acknowledge him at first, why is she worried now about not being in his heart?”

Bai Zepei said calmly, ”This ancient lady isn’t simple. I heard she had two sons with the Xue Family, the youngest being only four or five, and she still left them. When Xue County King sided with King Rui, and they were captured, she followed Yichun without a care for her two sons’ wellbeing.”

”This woman’s selfish, I don’t think someone so self-centered would truly want to die, we don’t need to bother with her,” Bai Zehao said.

Bai Ruozhu suddenly went ”Oh,” drawing out her voice, making everyone look at her to see if she had thought of something.

”I remember when she was saved from her hanging attempt, she suddenly said to her nurse, ’Why did you just come back?’ Initially, I didn’t think much of it, but from what big brother said, considering she wouldn’t really want to die, that statement proves her attempt was just for show.”

Bai Ruozhu laughed, ”To make it convincing, she sent everyone away, especially her nurse, and calculated the time for her nurse to return before hanging. Unexpectedly, the nurse got delayed and she almost ended up really strangling herself.”

Everyone was stunned for a while, only coming back to their senses realizing Gai Yalai was much smarter than Dou Yun, who used to make a fuss outside Yu Family with her suicide attempts. Had it not been for today’s discussion, everyone would have believed she was genuinely seeking death.

”Thinking she can trouble us with a hanging act and manipulate our Ruozhu, she should see if she’s worth it,” Lin Ping’er said angrily, ”Whatever, I’ll go check so the neighbors don’t hear and think I’m an inhospitable host.”

Lin Ping’er said, getting up, but Bai Ruozhu quickly pulled her mother back to her seat, ”Mother, in the first three months, you need to be careful, I’ll take care of it.”

”You are carrying twins, you shouldn’t take chances, or maybe we should just ignore her,” Lin Ping’er said hesitantly.

Wan Caiyue stood up and said, ”It’s inappropriate for no woman from the family to go, let me handle it.”

Bai Ruozhu worried a bit about her sister-in-law’s good temperament getting bullied, but Wan Caiyue smiled and said, ”This is our territory, with maids, matrons, and guards everywhere, how could she bully me?”

Hearing this, Bai Ruozhu didn’t object, and let her sister-in-law go handle it.

In this Residence, her sister-in-law should be the head lady in the future, it’s good for her to face things more often.

Everyone continued eating, and just as they finished, Wan Caiyue returned with a smile.

”Big sister-in-law, how did it go?” Bai Ruozhu quickly handed Wan Caiyue a cup of tea, knowing the trips back and forth were tiring.

Wan Caiyue took a sip, smiling, ”She’s calmed down now and probably won’t make a fuss for a few days.”

”Caiyue, how did you manage that?” Lin Ping’er asked, looking at her eldest daughter-in-law in amazement. Usually, she seemed quiet, but she handled matters with great efficiency.

Wan Caiyue smiled and explained, ”I told her brother-in-law had taken a royal assignment and needed to avoid her. After all, Xue County King’s rebellion has made the emperor wary of her. If anything happens, the emperor could have her apprehended for questioning.”

She glanced at Bai Zehao, ”My husband was right; she doesn’t truly want to die. As soon as she heard this, she got scared and didn’t dare utter another word.”
