Chapter 1767: Chapter 1767: Attacked Again

”Are you upset with the Emperor?” Lu furrowed his brow, ”We are old acquaintances, so I’ll speak frankly. He is the Emperor. Many matters require his consideration, and they aren’t as simple as they appear.”

Bai Ruozhu was startled. Was Lu implying that the Emperor had listened, but was pretending it was a joke to avoid alerting the enemy?

”Thank you for the reminder, Lord Lu. I really shouldn’t enter the Palace. Please convey my message, and since the matter is still unclear, it’s better to act discreetly to avoid alerting the enemy.”

Chu Hai had previously told her that the poisoner was a mere pawn, and they’re still after the big fish. Entering the Palace to detoxify now would just alert the other side to prepare.

Lu nodded, ”You are right. I’ll go report to the Emperor right away.”

After Lu left, Bai Ruozhu’s mind wandered again. If the enemy discovered the Emperor was being detoxified, would they flee in panic, or would they fight to the death and find another chance to poison the Emperor?

However, she thought that trying to harm the Emperor now wouldn’t be so easy.

”Mother, when will Uncle Ning arrive? He hasn’t taught me the Mechanical Technique in such a long time.” Little Dengdeng ran into the room, pouting.

Bai Ruozhu was pulled back to reality, and stroked her son’s head, saying, ”He will come back soon. In the meantime, why don’t you practice some boxing or study?”

”No, I don’t want to!” Little Dengdeng pouted and threw a tantrum, ”I want to play with the wooden puppies and the wooden fish. Uncle Ning hasn’t given them to me yet!”

Bai Ruozhu felt a headache. Her son talking so early was also a nuisance. He would chatter endlessly, always asking why or wanting this and that. She was quite exhausted by it.

”But I also don’t know where Uncle Ning and the others are, and I’m worried about them too.” Bai Ruozhu’s thoughts wandered again. Even if they encountered setbacks, there should have been a letter unless King Rui had caught them?

The thought startled her. If that were the case, they wouldn’t be in immediate danger, but they could be coerced into doing things unwillingly, like threatening Princess Diao Bin’s life.

And Diao Bin might become a hostage when the two sides have their final showdown.

She dared not think any further. Since becoming pregnant, she had become more emotional, and thinking more about it could lead to prenatal depression.

”Mother, I haven’t figured out how to take apart the wooden fish yet!” Little Dengdeng, being young, didn’t have sustained interest. He just liked to eat and play, possibly forgetting things after a few days and moving on to new interests, but he was persistent with the Mechanical Technique.

Bai Ruozhu originally thought that if no one mentioned it, her son would gradually forget. When she returned from learning from Jiao Ling, she practiced in secret. Yet, Little Dengdeng still frequently inquired. If Ning Yu knew that Little Dengdeng was more interested in wooden fish than him as an uncle, he might silently shed a tear or two.

Bai Ruozhu, troubled by her son’s chatter, had no choice but to say, ”Fine, fine. I’ll take you to meet a senior who knows the Mechanical Technique. She’s my teacher, so be polite when you see her, okay?”

Little Dengdeng was excited, ”Okay, okay, I’ll be good. How should I address her?”

This stumped Bai Ruozhu. What should he call her? Master? She wasn’t a formal disciple of Jiao Ling, so that didn’t seem appropriate. Grandma? Jiao Ling seemed young; would that sound too old-fashioned? If he called her Aunt, Jiao Ling mentioned her daughter was about the same age as Bai Ruozhu.

”I guess it should be Grandma.” Bai Ruozhu said uncertainly.

”Okay, let’s go quickly.” Little Dengdeng, excited, grabbed his mother’s hand, toddling outside.

Bai Ruozhu hastily called Jianqi and Nanny Zhang to accompany them and took a horse carriage towards the inn where Jiao Ling and the others were staying.

At this age, Little Dengdeng often said amusing things. In the carriage, Bai Ruozhu and Nanny Zhang laughed heartily, when suddenly there was a loud clash. From outside, Jianqi shouted, ”Mistress, be careful, there’s an assassin!”

Bai Ruozhu quickly pulled her son close. She shouldn’t have brought him out. If danger was unavoidable, even at the risk of exposing herself, she would take him into the Space to ensure his safety.

But...

Her gaze landed on Nanny Zhang. She could only take one person inside, and she couldn’t ensure Nanny Zhang’s safety.

Before she could think further, Nanny Zhang shouted, ”Watch out!”

The carriage suddenly tilted. Someone outside had used hooks to topple the horse carriage, to prevent Bai Ruozhu’s escape!

Nanny Zhang jumped over, holding Bai Ruozhu, and all three tumbled out of the carriage. Bai Ruozhu wasn’t hurt, thanks to Nanny Zhang protecting them, but Nanny Zhang scraped a large patch of skin from her arm, bleeding heavily.

Bai Ruozhu held Little Dengdeng tightly, being careful of her own belly. Meanwhile, Jianqi and the assassins were in combat. Jianqi tried retreating to protect Bai Ruozhu, but two assassins tightly entangled him.

”Nanny, are you okay?” Bai Ruozhu asked, taking medicine from her sleeve. Nanny Zhang quickly stopped her, saying, ”It’s just a scratch, Madam. Be careful yourself.”

She stood in front of them, determined to protect Bai Ruozhu and her son at all costs. Bai Ruozhu felt guilty for previously thinking she couldn’t ensure Nanny Zhang’s safety.

”Mother, why do those bad people want to kill us?” Little Dengdeng asked angrily.

”Those are killers, Dengdeng. Don’t be afraid. Mother and Nanny will protect you.” Bai Ruozhu gently reassured her son.

Little Dengdeng clenched his little fist, angrily saying, ”I want to protect you both. I don’t want to be a burden!”

Bai Ruozhu was momentarily stunned. How did he know about being a burden? He was understanding too early.

Nanny Zhang, with tears in her eyes, said, ”Young Master will protect us when he grows up. Thank you, Young Master.”

Just then, an assassin freed up and suddenly sent hidden weapons towards Bai Ruozhu. Fortunately, she was cautious, having set up a protective barrier with Magic Technique. The hidden weapons fell to the ground harmlessly.

Jianqi shouted coldly, leaping up to decapitate the assassin who had used the hidden weapons. However, the two assassins entangling him caught up, slashing his back.

Jianqi’s body trembled, but he quickly rejoined the fight. His dark clothes hid the blood, but Bai Ruozhu knew he was seriously injured, making her more anxious.

Shouldn’t the Gold Guards be alerted soon?

She was worried when suddenly a figure broke through the encirclement, rushing towards her. They casually knocked down two assassins with a folding fan. Bai Ruozhu’s eyes blurred with emotion. With this reinforcement, she and her child were safe.
