Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1788: Chapter 1788: Somewhat Familiar

The Virtuous King took out a letter and handed it to the Emperor, saying, ”Yesterday, my wife visited Consort Le in the Palace. When she was leaving, Consort Le gave her a letter, asking her to take care of the Crown Prince if anything happened to her. My old wife even laughed and said Consort Le was overthinking. How could she have problems before us old bones?”

The Virtuous King continued, ”Later, my wife felt something was amiss and told me about it as soon as she returned, even showing me the letter. I rushed over this morning only to hear the news of Consort Le’s suicide... ”

The letter had already been opened by the Emperor, and it was indeed in Consort Le’s handwriting. It stated that Ling Xue was carrying the Emperor’s child. If anything happened to her, she asked the Virtuous King and his wife to protect the child and expressed her wish to leave the Emperor an heir.

In anger, the Emperor threw the letter on the ground. Yet, Gao Zhou picked it up, making Bai Ruozhu twitch her lips. Gao Zhou was indeed audacious.

Gao Zhou, holding the letter, walked over to Bai Ruozhu and casually said, ”Lord Bai, let’s look at it together. To treat patients with depression, we need to understand their thoughts better. The more details we grasp, the better.”

Bai Ruozhu found it hard to argue back and was forced to keep reading.

In Consort Le’s words, there was a faint sadness and a worry and love for the Emperor. Her motivation for everything was her deep love for the Emperor. Even though she couldn’t accompany him throughout his life, she hoped he would have a healthy heir to ease some of his burdens.

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t decide whether to mock Consort Le for her convoluted thinking or to sympathize with her deep love. But this mindset was indeed strange.

Of course, she believed that someone had led her thinking astray.

She glanced over at Ling Xue and saw her head drooping, eyes hollow and lifeless, like a lost soul resigned to death.

She sneered internally. Whatever others thought of Ling Xue, she didn’t know, but she herself did not believe Ling Xue was easy to deal with.

”Uncle, I don’t want to be manipulated. Ling Xue cannot stay!” Tang Yin said.

Suddenly, the Virtuous King knelt before him, ”Your Majesty, your lineage is fragile. If you insist on killing Ling Xue, would you not be killing your own child? If it must be so, this old subject can only end his life here to avoid facing your deceased father with shame!”

”Uncle you...” Tang Yin glared angrily, yet afraid to speak harsh words. He knew the Virtuous King was a tough character. He spoke genuinely and acted accordingly, and Tang Yin had just witnessed the near-death of Consort Le; he didn’t want to see his uncle die before him.

”Your Majesty, let this old subject arrange Ling Xue’s matter. You dislike her, so deal with it after the child is born. You can’t just lose a Royal Family descendant; I beg Your Majesty’s grace!” The Virtuous King started banging his head on the ground. The gesture even frightened Bai Ruozhu beside him.

The Virtuous King was indeed tough. He had once troubled her, but later changed his perception of her; otherwise, he truly was a stubborn old man.

”Uncle, hurry and get up!” Tang Yin rushed to help the Virtuous King, reluctantly agreeing to his request. By the time the Virtuous King stood, his forehead was already blood-stained and battered.

The crowd couldn’t help but gasp. Gao Zhou helplessly stepped forward, ”Let this humble servant help the Prince bandage it.”

He had truly had enough today, coming to this despicable place only to end up bandaging someone. If he hadn’t come, it would have been Bai Ruozhu doing it.

He subconsciously glanced at Bai Ruozhu’s belly. Well, what a life full of toil he had.

Once the Virtuous King was bandaged, he left with the seemingly soulless Ling Xue. The Emperor sat wearily to the side and waved, saying, ”You all may leave too. Do not spread today’s matters. The Holy Doctor and Bai Chief Doctor return tomorrow to confer on Consort Le.”

Bai Ruozhu and the other two acknowledged in unison before leaving the inner chamber.

Once outside, breathing in the fresh air, Bai Ruozhu let out a big sigh of relief, finally realizing her legs were weak from standing.

”Aren’t you going to help your wife? She’s about to fall!” Gao Zhou lifted his leg to kick Jiang Yichun, then waved his sleeves, ”I have something to do, so I’m leaving first. Your wife’s health isn’t good, walk slowly.”

With that, he ignored the two and dashed away.

Jiang Yichun supported Bai Ruozhu, but his mind drifted off.

”What’s wrong?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

He looked into her eyes, ”Why do I find his kick so familiar, and I don’t even mind it?”

Bai Ruozhu chuckled, ”You perhaps have a tendency for self-abasement.”

Jiang Yichun lightly tapped her forehead, ”No nonsense. I genuinely feel something strange, especially that glare he gave me when he got off the horse carriage, also felt somewhat familiar.”

He spoke, again losing himself in thought, and after a moment added, ”I remember during the attempted assassination of Yang Tianhua, while disguised, I saw a silhouette that seemed familiar. In hindsight, it should have been the esteemed Holy Doctor.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”In the horse carriage earlier, he probably closed his eyes to rest, but I think he was avoiding us seeing anything unusual. Having interacted with him before, if he feared I’d notice something, he would’ve hidden long ago. It seems he’s guarding against you.”

”Could he be someone previously pursued by the Ministry of Justice, afraid I’d recognize him?” Jiang Yichun asked.

”Impossible. I have a feeling he’s someone you know.” Bai Ruozhu supported her chin, pondering.

A white figure approached them with a smiling demeanor, ”You two go on with your lovey-dovey talks all the way to the Guest Palace; no one would be more affectionate than you two.”

Turning her head, Bai Ruozhu saw Tang Feng approaching and couldn’t help but roll her eyes, ”I’m a pregnant woman now, can’t walk any more, so what’s wrong with leaning on my man? What do you, someone without a wife, understand?”

Tang Feng didn’t bicker with her and said joyfully, ”Who said I don’t have a wife? I’m heading to see the Emperor now, to request a decree for marriage.”

”Princess Fu’an?” Bai Ruozhu asked happily.

Tang Feng laughed, ”Who else could it be?”

Jiang Yichun, unaware of Tang Feng’s past heart issues, noticed the casual chat between the two like old friends and felt a tinge of displeasure. Even if they’re old friends, Tang Feng is still a man!

Bai Ruozhu didn’t notice the chill her man was exuding. She was genuinely happy for Tang Feng; he could finally let go of old grievances and embrace love.

”Better not disturb the Emperor today; Consort Le is ill.” Jiang Yichun said, interrupting their conversation.

”Right, right, the Emperor is not in a good mood today. Bring it up in a few days,” Bai Ruozhu added.

”Alright, I’ll head back then, not going to be a third wheel around you two.” Tang Feng, said gleefully, then left Jiang Yichun puzzled, ”What’s a third wheel? Why does he sound so like you?”

Bai Ruozhu’s lips twitched as she hastily made up an excuse, ”I once bumped into him and Princess Fu’an together and called myself a third wheel, so now he’s using it back on me.”

Jiang Yichun gave an ”oh” without further dwelling on it, but suddenly said, ”If Consort Le pinned all her hopes on the child in Ling Xue’s belly, then why did she suddenly commit suicide?”
