Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1783: Chapter 1783: The Old Woman Skilled in Demon Techniques

”No way, right? Madam Gu may not have a great personality, but would she really dare to pinch her?” Yu Chenghua frowned, ”I actually thought it was strange how clingy she was to my elder brother during the journey. Madam Gu had some harsh words about it and found her quite unpleasant, but within a couple of days, Madam Gu’s condition worsened, and she didn’t have the energy to comment on her anymore.”

”Wait a minute!” Bai Ruozhu suddenly sensed something was off.

”How serious was Madam Gu’s illness at the time? Did she have trouble eating or walking?”

Yu Chenghua thought for a moment, ”At first, she developed a rash, which later became so severe that it ulcerated. Afterwards, she wore a gauze cap, so I couldn’t see it anymore. But when it was severe, she had a lot of difficulty walking. Once, when getting on a horse carriage, my elder brother and I had to support her from both sides. It didn’t seem like she was faking it.”

”Achun always said her illness was serious too, and her skin ulcers were indeed severe, but yesterday, she seemed in good spirits, running to my parents to present gifts, and later going back to her room causing a scene threatening to hang herself.” Bai Ruozhu mused in her heart. Is it that her illness just goes back and forth like this, or is she really getting better?

Yu Chenghua and Jiang Zhihe both showed disdain, especially because of Dou Yun’s incident—both were particularly averse to hanging oneself at someone else’s home.

”But she shouldn’t have the strength to walk to your main courtyard, right? I remember after we got back, she was so ill she couldn’t even get out of bed, then my elder brother heard you were attacked and had to rush back, and she fainted right there. My elder brother was quite troubled at the time. Flash Lightning promised to take good care of her, and only then did my elder brother and I rush back.” Yu Chenghua added.

Bai Ruozhu frowned, could she be pretending?

If it were another illness, she could naturally tell if someone was pretending or not. But this illness Gai Yalai had, Bai Ruozhu had never seen it before and couldn’t cure it. How could she know if Gai Yalai was pretending?

Looking at Gai Yalai’s skin ulceration, it appeared quite severe.

”Oh, right, her nanny also contracted the rash. You’ve been in contact with her, so if you notice any rash, you must come find me immediately.” Bai Ruozhu instructed.

Jiang Zhihe got nervous immediately upon hearing this and quickly rolled up Yu Chenghua’s sleeve to check, causing Yu Chenghua to blush a little.

”Can the nanny’s condition be treated? She’s quite a good person, and my elder brother mentioned that she took care of him when he was a child. He often gives her face for that. She even helped me when I got injured.” Yu Chenghua, although severely injured at the time, was still conscious, and knew that Gai Yalai didn’t dare to remove the sword stuck in his body, and it was the nanny who helped.

After hearing what happened, Bai Ruozhu asked in surprise, ”The Saint of Medicine saved you?”

”Yes, it’s a pity I passed out afterwards and didn’t have the chance to thank him before he left.” Yu Chenghua said regretfully.

Bai Ruozhu almost wanted to say he could apologize now, but upon thinking it over she felt something was off. Did the Saint of Medicine saving Achun and the others happen by chance, or was it intentional?

If he helped her because everyone was from the transmigration, then if he deliberately saved Achun and the others, what was the motive?

Thinking of this, Bai Ruozhu felt she had to have a good talk with that guy Gao Zhou.

”Zhihe, Chenghua, you two have a good rest, I have something to attend to so I’ll leave first.” Bai Ruozhu said her farewells and hurried off.

Yu Chenghua watched Bai Ruozhu’s departing figure and said, ”It’s not easy for sister-in-law either, she has so much to worry about, and Madam Gu is really difficult to get along with.”

”If sister-in-law is wronged, we’ll take her back to live with us. Madam Gu can shamelessly stay with the Bai Family, but I don’t believe she’d have the face to come to the Jiang Family!” Jiang Zhihe said angrily.

Yu Chenghua couldn’t help but laugh, ”Aren’t I great? I haven’t given you so many troubles.”

Jiang Zhihe blushed and pinched his arm, ”Are you saying my elder brother isn’t good?”

...

Bai Ruozhu took the horse carriage towards the inn, but halfway through, the carriage stopped, and sounds of commotion came from outside.

”Master, regular civilians are blocking the road; they should move soon.” Jianqi’s voice sounded from outside the carriage.

”Civilians blocking the way? It’s not a holiday, what’s going on?” Bai Ruozhu was curious and lifted the curtain of the carriage, witnessing two groups of people confronting each other with a makeshift stretcher carrying someone whose identity was unclear.

”One family carried the injured to seek treatment, but another group is blocking them, causing a dispute. The injured person’s head is bleeding continuously; it seems to be a woman.” Jianqi said.

Since the carriage couldn’t pass, Bai Ruozhu simply listened closely to their conversation.

”Bullsh*t, her life is a life, but my daughter’s life isn’t? Today, none of you are leaving without giving us an explanation!”

”Are you being reasonable? Your daughter was divorced and you’re blaming us? What was wrong with the makeup my mother did for your daughter’s wedding? Was it ugly or what? After you beat a person nearly to death, you still won’t let anyone see a doctor. Are you trying to kill someone?”

”We’ve asked around, several families who had Xin Madam do their daughters’ makeup had their daughters living unhappily post-marriage. Some married for less than a year, constantly in tears, and eventually dying at their in-laws’ home. Isn’t Xin Madam to blame? How else could it be so sinister?”

”......”

After listening for a while, Bai Ruozhu got a rough understanding: The injured woman called Xin Madam was a skilled makeup artist, especially sought after to do brides’ makeup. She could make women look exceedingly beautiful, so many families were willing to pay extra for her services.

The other group, the Zhang Family, recently had a daughter who was divorced shortly after marriage, for being supposedly too ugly for the husband. The Zhang daughter couldn’t take it and attempted to hang herself. Though she was saved, she was left a shadow of her former self. Additionally, the Zhang Family heard that brides whom Xin Madam had painted didn’t lead happy lives, which led them to believe that Xin Madam had cursed their daughter.

So the Zhang Family attacked the Xin Family, hitting Xin Madam’s head and leaving a bloody hole. The Xin Family carried her to get treatment but were persistently blocked by the Zhang Family, who accused Xin Madam of using demon techniques to harm people and insisted on ridding the public of this menace.

”Miss, do you think that Xin Madam really knows demon techniques?” the coachman, thinking Bai Ruozhu had broad knowledge, curiously asked.

”Not necessarily demon techniques, but it’s not hard to figure out the likely cause.” Bai Ruozhu shook her head helplessly, ”Think about it, nowadays most marriages are blind arranged marriages, where the bride and groom haven’t seen each other. On the wedding night, when the husband first sees the bride, she’s made to look as beautiful as an immortal, so naturally, he’s happy. But the next day, when the makeup is removed, the bride returns to her original appearance, and many men can’t handle that disappointment, so naturally, their marital relationship doesn’t improve.”

Jianqi was also listening nearby; having never married, he didn’t understand the secrets behind this, but he frowned and said, ”If she’s one’s wife, how can one judge only by appearance and ignore inner beauty?”
