Chapter 1437: Chapter 1438: The New Top Second Scholar, Bai Family’s Request_1

Bai Ruozhu was of course talking about Dengdeng and Little Chenxi, in her heart, Dengdeng was a child of the Bai Family and had nothing to do with the Jiang Family.

However, Lin Ping suddenly thought of this and hurriedly asked, ”Did you go to inform the Jiang Family Members? After eating, you should go back, lest they come looking for trouble again.”

Lin Ping’s words were filled with reluctance. It was not easy for her daughter to come home, and she did not want to push her back out. But since her daughter was married off, she couldn’t bear the Jiang Family giving Ruozhu trouble.

”I have urgent matters to take care of in these next three days and need a quiet place. My own courtyard is more suitable. Moreover, the Emperor didn’t even mention returning to the Jiang Family this time, so let’s not insist on going back,” Bai Ruozhu said, also giving Jiang Yichun a glance, urging him to quickly take a stand.

”Yes, Mother, it’s not just Ruozhu who doesn’t want to go there; I also feel uncomfortable all over when I’m there. Ruozhu has now received the Imperial Decree to learn the Magic Technique left by the National Master. It would be better for her not to be disturbed at home. The Emperor won’t blame her,” Jiang Yichun said.

After hearing this, Lin Ping felt relieved but added, ”Then Ruozhu should go and study properly later. No one is allowed to disturb her. After these few days, we can catch up properly.”

Everyone from the Bai Family was understanding and agreed one after another. Bai Ruozhu was pleased and stood up to toast everyone. Then, she poured another glass of wine and offered it to Bai Zepei.

”Second Brother, we have all seen your hard work these years. Congratulations, you are our Bai Family’s first runner-up in the imperial examinations. From now on, when we go out, we can use your name,” Bai Ruozhu said with a beaming smile.

Bai Zehao quickly interjected, ”Little Sister, you are right. These days, our doorstep is almost worn out from all the matchmakers. Even when I go out to purchase goods, as soon as people hear I’m the newly appointed runner-up’s big brother, they offer me discounts. But they always ask me to check if their Misses suit Second Brother’s taste. How would I know what kind of girl Second Brother likes? Yet they just won’t believe me, sigh.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Ping sighed heavily and complained, ”You need to settle Second Brother’s matter soon. I’m worried sick enough to turn my hair white.”

”Yeah, Second Brother, if you keep delaying, what if a family really takes a liking to you and goes to the Emperor to request a marriage decree? I’d like to see what you’d do then,” Bai Ruozhu added fuel to the fire.

Seeing Second Brother’s face change color, Bai Ruozhu widened her eyes, ”Second Brother, you don’t mean I’ve guessed right, do you? Has someone already sought the Emperor about this?”

Bai Ruozhu knew that Second Brother, now serving as the Imperial Secretary Assistant, was privy to many messages at the first instance. So seeing Second Brother’s expression, there must really be someone who had done so.

”The Prime Minister has proposed a marriage for his third daughter to the Si Family, and... ,” Bai Zepei frowned, ”the Virtuous King for his youngest daughter.”

”The Virtuous King?” Bai Ruozhu thought she must have heard wrong. Didn’t the Virtuous King cause her trouble before, accusing her of disrespecting Elder Jiang Ge? And now, he had the audacity to think of marrying his little daughter to her Second Brother? Wasn’t he afraid that if his little daughter married into the Bai Family, they would mistreat her?

Jiang Yichun was also surprised, thinking that the Virtuous King didn’t play by the usual rules.

”The Virtuous King’s youngest daughter is also a princess, right? Her status is indeed very high!” Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but remark.

Hearing this, Bai Zehao also said, ”The Prime Minister’s granddaughter isn’t of low status either. Second Brother has become quite a catch!”

Bai Zepei glanced sideways at his elder brother, ”If big brother acts like this, I might as well tell everyone that the marriage arrangements are decided by my eldest brother.”

”Don’t, don’t, I’m scared of those people sticking to me. I’ll stop teasing you, isn’t that enough?” Bai Zehao immediately surrendered.

Bai Ruozhu felt a mix of laughter and tears, ”Why wouldn’t they go to Tang Feng? Isn’t Tang Feng also unmarried?”

Bai Zepei shook his head with a smile, ”Tang Feng isn’t much better than me. There’s a line up to the City Gate of families wanting to make him a concubine. It’s only because I announced that the Bai Family’s rule is not to take concubines that we avoided those troubles.”

Bai Ruozhu, thinking of Tang Feng surrounded by crowds, couldn’t help but laugh. But she quickly pursed her lips and said to her second brother, ”It’s also because you said that, which attracted the attention of the Prime Minister’s and the Virtuous King’s families. They must be families who cherish their daughters, aiming for our Bai Family’s stance on not taking concubines. Second brother, you have to think this through. If you ever do want to take a concubine, they won’t let you off easily.”

”Dad, mom, big brother, you, and Yichun all have a partner for life. Why would the second brother need a concubine? You girl, stop making up stories about your second brother.” Bai Zepei was a bit embarrassed when it came to marriage.

”I’ve met the third Miss of the Prime Minister’s family, Si Yihuan. She’s a forthright Miss, top-notch in both character and appearance. As for the Virtuous King’s youngest daughter, I haven’t met her, but I’ll definitely take the opportunity to meet her to help screen candidates for you, second brother,” Bai Ruozhu said with a cheeky smile.

Bai Zepei just felt a headache coming on, ”Second brother isn’t keen on getting married so soon. At least not until my Imperial Court duties are stabilized.”

When Lin Ping’er heard it, she became anxious. The second son’s marriage had become her heartache. She was just about to start lecturing Bai Zepei when the maid from outside announced the arrival of the Jiang Family’s lady.

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun exchanged a helpless look.

Lin Ping’er glanced at the two of them and quickly said to the maid, ”Quickly invite her in.”

Once the maid left, Lin Ping’er said to Bai Ruozhu, ”Regardless of whether you’re willing to return to the Jiang Family or not, you’ll have to be polite later, and explain things well to Madam Jiang to avoid any trouble.”

”Yes, mother,” Bai Ruozhu said listlessly.

Soon, the Jiang Family’s lady and others were led in. Bai Ruozhu was somewhat surprised; not only had the Jiang Family’s lady and Jiang Zhihe come, but also the wife of Dou Ning and their eldest daughter Dou Yun. That Madam Dou always had issues with her, what was she doing here now?

As Bai Ruozhu caught Dou Yun casting shy glances in Bai Zepei’s direction, she realized what was happening.

They say that when a family has a daughter, many families come asking, but so do they when the family has a handsome and elegant number two scholar.

The two parties stood up to greet each other. Seeing that the Bai Family was in the middle of hosting a feast, the Jiang Family’s lady’s face showed embarrassment. She gave Madam Dou a blaming look, as it was all because Madam Dou kept urging her, worrying that if Bai Ruozhu entered the palace again, they might not even be able to see each other. And if things were settled in the palace, their advantage of being close-by would have gone to waste.

”Yichun and Ruozhu must be tired from the journey back. You’d have known about the second son of the family placing as number two scholar on your way back, right?” Madam Dou smiled and talked to Bai Ruozhu and her husband, acting extremely familiar, as if she had been on good terms with them before. Bai Ruozhu got goosebumps; calling him ”dear second son” when she had never before mentioned the Bai Family, even looking down on their small household. Now with this attitude, Madam Dou was making Bai Ruozhu so disgusted that she lost all desire to eat.
