Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1291: Chapter 1293: Treating You as Cannon Fodder_1

Jiang Yichun leaped over, pulled the burning arrow out from the horse carriage, turned around to grab the bow and arrows from the horseback, and swiftly extended his arms to shoot toward the distant forest. His movement was fluid and precise, followed by someone’s scream as they fell to the ground.

”Everyone be alert, their arrows will eventually run out.” Jiang Yichun gave a signal with his eyes to his subordinates, indicating for them to hold their position and not to charge into the forest to kill the attackers.

The arrows were repeatedly blocked by the guards, and soon the people lying in ambush in the forest began to grumble, ”Damn it, how are these people so skilled? Our Dark Arrows can’t even hurt them; can we overcome them if we rush out?”

The hesitant men glanced back at the group following them and said, ”Let’s charge now. With the backup our boss has found, how can we not overcome them?”

As the ambushers appeared, each with black cloth concealing their hair and faces, a fierce battle began. Jiang Yichun wasn’t keen on dragging out the fight, always staying close to Bai Ruozhu. He whispered to her, ”Be careful, it feels like they’re after you.”

Bai Ruozhu snorted coldly, ”I’ve got the same feeling, and since I don’t know anyone here, it could only be that father and daughter duo.”

After they finished speaking, several people who obviously had better skills suddenly approached Bai Ruozhu’s position, moving so quickly that it made her nervous.

These people were definitely not from the Jin Family’s team; the Jin Family’s team didn’t have such experts! And even when these newcomers were stopped by the guards, the techniques and movements they employed were clearly not of the Zhongyuan people!

With Sword Flowers twirling, Jiang Yichun quickly parried the oncoming assailants. They had previously ordered in secret that everyone should hide their true strength unless they faced danger, allowing only Jiang Yichun, Jianqi, Chen Feng, and Muyu to use their full capabilities. After all, it wasn’t surprising for a noble family to have a few experts, but a whole team of them would arouse suspicion.

So at that moment, Jiang Yichun couldn’t be careless as he protected Bai Ruozhu, blocking several attackers. But just then, one person’s figure vanished incredibly quickly, only to reappear behind Bai Ruozhu the next second.

The attacker reached out towards Bai Ruozhu’s throat; Jiang Yichun shouted in alarm, ”Ruozhu, be careful!”

Bai Ruozhu had already sensed the danger and had been on guard, leveraging her lightness skill to dodge behind Jiang Yichun swiftly.

The sneak attack failed, and the attacker was swiftly wounded in the arm by Jiang Yichun’s sword, letting out a strange cry before quickly retreating.

After exchanging glances, the attackers retreated just as quickly, dispersing and fleeing toward the forest.

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun were both slightly taken aback. They had fled just like that? Without even calling the others?

Of course, those who were more surprised were the remaining masked men. They were still entangled in combat with other guards—why had their main forces fled?

The leader looked back for a moment, and in that instant of distraction, Jianqi’s sword was already at his throat, quickly immobilizing his acupoints.

Jianqi yanked off the masked man’s black cloth to reveal Lin Dangjia’s face.

”Stop all actions, or I will show no mercy!” Jiang Yichun shouted sternly, his voice carrying inner strength that made people’s ears buzz. Seeing that Lin Dangjia had been captured, the other masked men had no choice but to stop as well.

”Headman Lin, no harm has come to you, I see—but have you really switched trades to become a killer so quickly?” Bai Ruozhu remarked with a face full of sarcasm.

Headman Lin’s old face turned slightly red, and he coughed awkwardly before saying, ”Mrs. Bai, I apologize for the offense. Our Invincible Escort Agency accepted this job and had to follow the client’s orders—though we never intended to kill anyone. Please don’t misunderstand.”

”So many cold arrows shot and you weren’t planning to kill anyone? That’s quite a poor excuse, Headman Lin,” Jiang Yichun said as he walked over and fixated his gaze on Headman Lin.

Having just witnessed Jiang Yichun’s prowess, Headman Lin grew nervous as he approached, his speech stammering, ”It’s true, we only wanted to create confusion and then capture Mrs. Bai as the client instructed.”

Outsiders all thought Jiang Yichun’s surname was Bai, so they called Bai Ruozhu ”Mrs. Bai” and their merchant team ”Bai Family Merchant Team,” which inadvertently made Bai Ruozhu the true boss.

”You’re risking your life for your employer, yet they didn’t call out to you when they ran away. They also made you attack first—you’re clearly just being used as expendable pawns. Headman Lin, it hasn’t been easy for your escort agency to get to this point. Don’t lose everything for a bit of money,” Bai Ruozhu said before glancing at the others around—those remaining were all Headman Lin’s subordinates from the Invincible Escort Agency.

The rest showed enlightenment—Boss Jin had arranged for those people to assist them, claiming they were all experts and assuring them there would be no issues. They were told just to cooperate with those few individuals. Little did they know they were simply being used, their lives deemed worthless!

If they had encountered someone more ruthless, they would have been massacred by now. Even if the Government Office of the Western Regions discovered it, Jiang Yichun and company could have simply stated they were robbed by bandits and killed in self-defense.

Yet, as members of the renowned Invincible Escort Agency, they would die guilt-ridden, branded as bandits and thugs—only now did they realize it!

Headman Lin’s face flushed with anger as he cursed loudly, ”Damn that Jin Wanliang! I knew he was sly and vicious, planning to kill us near Gaochang City to avoid paying the remaining amount due. He really knows how to kill two birds with one stone!”

”Headman Lin, we had no grudge to begin with and may cross paths again in our trading ventures. As long as you tell the whole truth about this matter, I will let you go, and we shall consider today’s affair settled,” Jiang Yichun declared.

Headman Lin’s face lit up with surprise—he had not expected them to be willing to let them go. He immediately recounted the whole incident.

It turned out that Jin Wanliang had found someone through the Holy Hall to treat Jin Jing and had also received assistance from a significant figure within the Holy Hall. He was given several martial arts experts as subordinates, and then he commanded Headman Lin to capture Bai Ruozhu, saying with their help there would be no problem. He also promised that once the task was successfully completed, he would immediately pay the remaining sum to Headman Lin and add a twenty percent bonus.

”Do you know which significant figure from the Holy Hall it was? Male or female?” Jiang Yichun asked further.

”Jin Wanliang always went to meet them in secret; we never saw anyone and have no idea about their identity,” Headman Lin replied.

Jiang Yichun reached out to release his acupoints and said, ”You may go, but if there’s a next time, I will not show any mercy.”

With his face still red, Headman Lin clasped his fists towards Jiang Yichun, ”Brother Bai, we are grateful that you spared us. We at the Invincible Escort Agency are not ungrateful and will never move against you again.”

After he finished, he also bowed to Bai Ruozhu and then turned to lead his subordinates away.

”Wait a moment!” Bai Ruozhu called out to Headman Lin, ”Are you planning to settle accounts with Jin Wanliang?”
