Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

The loud-mouthed woman sullenly shut her mouth, her face a mask of utter disgust. ”Well, of course. Who gets bitten and who doesn’t—it’s all a matter of luck, isn’t it?”

”Nurse, hey, Nurse! How about you move my bed over a bit? If she has an episode later, I’ll be farther away and safer.”

Xie Ning shot her a look and said coldly, ”How about we move you to the morgue? It’s the quietest place.”

Everyone: ...

The corner of Doctor Fang’s mouth twitched. He deadpanned, placing the film on the table. ’Xiao Gu’s girlfriend has a truly venomous tongue,’ he thought, ’but her fiery personality is so interesting.’

The loud-mouthed woman grew even more sullen. She clamped her mouth shut, but a moment later, opened it again.

Put out by Xie Ning’s retort, she pouted, shot a sideways glance, and made a face. ”My, my, what a way for a young lady to talk.”

”I’m just thinking of everyone’s safety! If there’s really something wrong with that mother and daughter, they’ll end up dragging everyone in this infirmary down with them.”

”People come to the infirmary because they want to live. If we get infected because of them, wouldn’t that be a pointless way to die?”

”Don’t worry,” Xie Ning said, her lips curling into a smile so cold it was bone-chilling.

”If it is contagious, you’ll be the first to get it. You’re a bigger target. You definitely won’t get away.”

The boisterous woman’s jaw dropped, and she stood there, speechless.

A few patients nearby, however, couldn’t hold back and burst out laughing.

The young nurses also turned away, giggling.

Xie Ning turned her head to Doctor Fang. ”Hurry up and do the examination. Didn’t you say more tests were needed?”

Doctor Fang nodded. Just as he was about to have someone take Yu Xiaofei to a separate observation room, Wang Gangfei shouted impatiently in his stiff, broken Mandarin, ”I’d advise you all not to waste your energy!”

They had been left hanging by Captain Xie for what felt like an eternity, and their patience had worn paper-thin.

Now that they had an opening, they naturally seized the opportunity to be as mocking as possible.

”Running more tests is useless,” Wang Gangfei sneered. ”With your sharp eyes, Captain Xie, surely you’ve figured it out by now? Does your friend need medical treatment? No.”

”She just needs a Healing Ability User to continue her treatment, that’s all.”

Xie Ning’s brows furrowed. She turned to look at Wang Gangfei, Li Weide, and the others with a humorless smile and nodded slightly. ”I was wondering why it was such a coincidence, running into Mr. Li Weide in the Superpower Area today. Turns out you were waiting there to corner me all along, weren’t you?”

’It seems Li Weide has had people watching Yu Xiaofei and her mother this whole time,’ she thought. ’The moment I showed up, they must have notified him and his group.’

Xie Ning’s gaze fell on a red-haired young man behind Li Weide. ”Are you friends with Xiao Yu?”

The red-haired man from Country A raised an eyebrow, smiling as he stepped forward. ”Hello, Captain Xie. I’ve heard so much about you. My name is Abbot, and I am indeed a friend of Yu Tianfeng from your Starfire Team.”

Xie Ning nodded, her gaze turning frigid. ”You’re playing him, aren’t you?”

”I’m not.”

”Just answer the question. Are you playing him or not?” Xie Ning took a step forward, her gaze turning glacial as she stared him down. ”Do you know what happened to the last person who tried to plot against me?”

Li Weide maintained his gentle, superficial smile, his expression unchanging. ”Captain Xie, there’s no need to be so aggressive. We can sit down and talk things over properly.”

”Are you threatening me?” Xie Ning asked, her face cold as she looked at Li Weide.

”No, no, it’s not a threat at all.” Li Weide smiled, shaking his head at her. ”In fact, we have always hoped to cooperate with you, Captain Xie. I believe I made that intention perfectly clear from the start.”

”You see? We could have had a friendly partnership. Why make things so tense?”

”Don’t you people from Country C have an old saying? Something about how having another friend means having another path to walk? That’s us, right here.”

Xie Ning stared at him coldly. ”Tell me. What did you do to the girl?”

Li Weide put on an innocent expression. ”Haven’t we made ourselves clear enough?”

”The girl just needs a Healing Ability User to continue her treatment—” Before Li Weide could finish, a fist slammed into his face.

A dull, throbbing pain erupted from his cheekbone. He let out a sharp HISS, clutching his face as he stumbled back several steps and slammed hard into a medical cabinet by the door.

”I think I forgot to mention something,” Xie Ning said, giving them an indifferent glance. ”I’m just not the kind of person who likes being threatened.”

”And once I’ve decided you’re an enemy...” Xie Ning suddenly flashed him a brilliant smile.
