I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 396, Cannot Lose to Rolly

Yan Hua’s gaze was intently fixed on the river’s surface, her Beast Bone Spear already raised high, presenting a fully prepared stance.

*Splash…* Suddenly, a series of jumping sounds arose as many dark shadows leaped out from the river.

Yan Hua’s spear pierced through the curtain of rain, and one could still hear the *whoosh* sound of the spear shaft cutting through the air at high speed.

*Thud thud thud…* Three spears struck those black shadows that had just jumped out, and red blood immediately flowed.

Although Yan Hua only held one Beast Bone Spear in her hands, two others were already prepared, just waiting to be thrown at any moment.

When she saw those black shadows appear, she knew her opportunity had come, and immediately aimed all three spears at those fishes.

She quickly retrieved the three spears and found that the fish on them had very sharp teeth.

Their mouths were particularly large, and if those teeth were to bite someone, they would take out a chunk of flesh in just a moment.

“Aren’t these piranhas?” Su Bai recognised those fish at a glance. Although they were slightly different from the ones on Earth.

(SIlavin: 食人鱼 – the name in direct Chinese is man eating fish. Just for context because of the next line.)

“Piranhas? These small fishes can eat people?” Yu Ying asked in surprise.

“Don’t underestimate them. Piranhas are Collectivistic animals. They always act together. If a cow from the Tribe fell into the river, it would be eaten down to the bones in no time.” Su Bai said.

He had watched plenty of nature documentaries before, and the terrifying nature and lethality of piranhas were still fresh in his mind. However, overall, there was not much difference between the piranhas from Earth and the ones here. Their appearance was mostly the same.

*Siii…* Yu Ying drew in a sharp breath, thinking this was too terrifying. She now became even more afraid of approaching the great river.

*Ci Ci Ci…* Another series of piercing sounds rang out as others along the riverbank also threw their spears.

They had also seen those black shadows leaping out of the river surface and had quickly acted.

Fresh blood fell into the river again, and because there was so much blood flowing, the bloody smell immediately attracted more piranhas.

They came swarming toward the smell, and for a time, splashes erupted all over the river surface.

The struggles of the pierced piranhas were completely drowned out by the sounds of piranhas fighting over food.

The piranhas here were completely black and red in colour, about as thick as an adult’s arm, and their powerful tails could splash up large amounts of water when they jumped out of the surface.

*Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!*

Another three spears were thrown out, with long grass ropes tied to them.

Obviously, this was to drag back the prey that had just been killed.

Plus, with so many people on the shore, normal fish would be even less likely to approach the river bank easily, which was why spears with grass ropes were needed. It was also to collect them while still safely away from the water. Otherwise, with so many people throwing spears, they themselves might be in danger.

Of course, there were also creatures that were not afraid of people on the shore, and those were the piranhas. They kept opening and closing their huge mouths, revealing sharp teeth.

It seemed that if anyone fell into the water, they would immediately be stripped clean to the bone.

The reason why Yan Hua and the others had wrapped animal hide around their feet was to protect against those piranhas.

Many piranhas would go so crazy as to leap directly out of the river, charging toward the people on the shore.

There had been many previous instances of piranhas biting others feet on the shore. This resulted in missing chunks of flesh, so the Tribe’s people had learned their lesson.

Moreover, those piranhas became even more frenzied when they smelled blood, rushing in groups toward places with the smell of blood.

Besides piranhas, many different fish were swimming close to the river surface. Those fish were of various colours.

However, most were dark, making the warm-coloured piranhas, especially their red, stand out particularly well among them.

Sometimes the piranhas would attack those small fishes, constantly swimming to chase them. When bitten, an entire fish would be swallowed or even torn to pieces.

“I’ve already caught six!” Yan Hua removed the fish from her spear.

Her accuracy with the spear was envied by many, as almost every spear she threw would hit a fish.

“I’m about the same, this should be my fifth one.” Sha Lan declared while aiming her raised spear at the distance.

*Meow! Meow…*

Soon, a series of muffled cries rang out, and Su Bai looked toward the source. It was Rolly lying on the bank, meowing.

The black cat’s fur had started to stand up, and its form had changed into that of a bristling Ocelot.

Rolly kept its brow and eyes lowered while watching the piranhas on the river surface, baring its teeth as if wanting to have a match with them.

[Wait. Aren’t cats supposed to be afraid of water? And it’s raining too. So, what are you doing out here?] Su Bai wondered.

Now, seeing Rolly not only unafraid of the rain, but looking like it wanted to jump into the river…

*Splash!* A leaping sound rang out as a piranha charged toward Rolly’s face.

*Meow!* Rolly let out a wild cry as it slapped the piranha onto the shore.

The force was so great that after the piranha was slapped ashore, the entire fish lay motionless on the bank, as if it had fainted.

Rolly did not immediately go to enjoy that piranha though. It continued facing the river while baring its teeth, as if wanting to accumulate more fish.

*Splash!* Another sound rang out as a piranha continued to charge at Rolly. With predictable results – this one was slapped unconscious on the bank as well.

A group of people and a cat were all aiming at the river while under the rain, hunting in their own ways.

This scene looked strangely harmonious, especially on Rolly’s side, where quite a number of fishes had accumulated on the shore.

Not all were there piranhas; there were some other fish too. Those other fishes had all been scooped up by Rolly’s claws.

“Rolly is amazing! Rolly can catch so many fish on its own.” Yan Hua turned to look toward the black cat’s direction.

Looking at the number of fish behind it, there must be over a dozen already, which was quite a lot. Well, compared to the others, who only had a few.

“Looks like we need to work harder, we can’t lose to Rolly!” Sha Lan smiled.

“Yes!” Yan Hua immediately nodded.
