I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 390, River Bear

*Awoooo……* A series of deep sounds echoed. They were extremely loud and penetrating.

The entire Flame Dragon Tribe resonated with these calls, continuing without pause.

At this moment, the Warrior Trainees who were training suddenly stopped what they were doing, and they all stood straight. Their expressions were solemn, and upon hearing this sound, a chill ran through their bodies from feet to scalp.

*Awoooo…* These deep sounds kept resonating, and one could visibly see the rain mist vibrating. The Warrior Trainees did not dare to be negligent, immediately running to higher ground to look toward the direction of the great river.

This call was extremely familiar to them, appearing every year during the rainy season.

There was no mistaking it – this call came from the Ferocious Beast in the river, which would emerge after several days into the rainy season.

Despite the heavy rain, despite the rain obscuring their vision, despite the river being some distance from the Tribe, and despite the Ferocious Beasts not fully revealing itself… looking from a high ground, they could still make out the Ferocious Beasts’ enormous size.

This was actually what the Tribe had been worried about, why they did not dare approach the riverbank easily, and why they did not dare play by the river.

Because during the rainy season, they had seen such enormous Ferocious Beasts, so they were afraid of approaching the river even during normal times.

Last time, when Su Bai had the Totem Warriors go to the riverbank to hunt for fish, those Totem Warriors were all somewhat apprehensive. Why? It was because they had witnessed the ferocity of the river’s Ferocious Beasts. Besides the rainy season, they would not have gone close to the river at all.

This was precisely what had prevented the Tribe from exploring the great river area – no one dared to approach the riverbank.

This particularly large Ferocious Beast dwelling in the river, the kind they feared, was called River Bear. True to its name, it was extremely massive, with an appearance similar to that of a bear.

The only difference was that it had webbing between its claws, and its fur was not as long as a bear’s. The River Bear had rather short fur, almost like a seal’s hide.

Many people mistakenly think seal skin was completely smooth. However, seals were considered to be mammals. They had a layer of fur, just that the fur was extremely short and dense, becoming very smooth when wet, looking no different from skin.

Due to their large and fierce appearance, combined with their deep bellowing voice, those Tribesmen naturally felt an instinctive fear when facing the River Bear.

Even without getting close enough to clearly see what it looked like, just seeing those dark shadows from the high ground made them want to keep their distance.

When these River Bears appear, it meant that the rainy season was entering its most severe phase.

Previously during the rainy season, the rain fell evenly, but when River Bears appeared, the rainfall would become increasingly heavy.

It was no longer like before, with gentle breezes passing through. Now, there would be storms, and the intensity of the rain would grow ever stronger.

The River Bears began slowly crawling ashore, roaring as they climbed, their voice deafening.

Like the horn of an Earth ship, it started deep and gradually became piercing and clear.

But due to their massive size, they could not directly climb up, and sank back into the water.

When they sank into the water, they once again made deep sounds, different from the piercing ones.

The former made people feel chest tightness and uncomfortable, while the latter made their eardrums feel like they were about to burst.

Both sounds brought about an extremely uncomfortable sensation. Thus, the River Bears’ appearance alone was simply torturous to anyone nearby.

At this moment, the Warrior Trainees observed the riverbank all covered their ears.

They all had pained expressions.

The River Bear’s calls were truly unbearable, every year was torment for them, and even covering their ears could not stop the sound from penetrating into their eardrum.

There was truly no escape. If these Ferocious Beasts climbed ashore, they would have to drive them back.

Su Bai saw Yu Ying and Co Co, their expressions even more uncomfortable.

Not just the Warrior Trainees or Totem Warriors, even the regular Tribe’s people could not stand these sounds.

Every time River Bears appeared, they would hide in their homes, tightly covering their ears, trying to block out these piercing sounds.

However, it was almost always useless. The penetrating power of those calls were just too strong. Some with weaker constitutions would faint from these sounds, even bleeding from their ears.

However, for those river Ferocious Beasts, this was a feast – they loved the rainy season, frequently raising their bodies above the water surface and roaring loudly in what seems to be a celebration.

In fact, if they were celebrating something, then those incomprehensible sounds explained everything.

However, due to their extremely large size, climbing ashore was very difficult. Sometimes, they might even try to climb up for an entire day and might not even get ashore.

If they could easily come ashore, the Tribe would likely no longer exist. It was precisely because climbing ashore was so difficult that the Tribe’s Warriors had enough time to respond.

“Ah’Hua, the River Bears have appeared again. Quickly tell the Chieftain. We need to drive them back!” Sha Lan loudly shouted.

“Let’s prepare first. Father must have heard the sounds. He must be rushing over as we speak.” Yan Hua also responded just as loudly.

After all, they had to shout. The River Bear’s calls were just too loud. Plus, the continuous heavy rain, they had to shout to communicate.

“Alright, then let’s go get our weapons. This time, with the longbow, we should be able to easily drive them away.” Sha Lan nodded and said.

*Thump thump thump…* The Warrior Trainees headed back. They were going to get their respective weapons, preparing to wait for the Totem Warriors’ to lead them to the riverbank together.

*Pitter patter…*

Su Bai came out holding an umbrella. He too was shocked by such loud sounds. However, he fortunately did not feel any discomfort.

Whether his ears or chest, he felt neither tightness nor piercing pain, only that the sounds were very loud and annoying.

Upon inquiry, he learned the girls’ ears were in extreme pain, and even their chests hurt.

After casting the Curing Skill on them, he led them out of the cement house to see what was happening.

On the way, he heard Yu Ying explain the source of those calls, and then understood it was the River Bears making those noises.

“Shaman, it’s too dangerous. You should head back.” Yu Ying worriedly said.

Although the Curing Skill had been casted on her, it only provided temporary relief, not a complete cure. Her ears and chest were still very uncomfortable, especially when those River Bears continued to call.

“It’s fine, let’s go take a look first.” Su Bai shook his head and said.
