I Became The Chief Of A Primitive Village

Chapter 388, Wild Boar Oil

“Shaman, all these mushrooms should be fine, right?” Yan Hua asked expectantly.

She had gathered many different types of mushrooms, four or five varieties in total, because they all appeared non-poisonous to her eyes.

“I told you not to pick so many different kinds.” Sha Lan said with a smile.

Sha Lan had only gathered two types of mushrooms, both unremarkable greyish-brown in appearance.

“Most of them are fine, but this type is problematic. Don’t gather it next time.” Su Bai pointed out one mushroom.

That particular mushroom was clearly poisonous, matching all the characteristics of toxic mushrooms.

The only difference was its colour – while not as vivid, it still looked abnormal compared to the other mushrooms.

“Alright, I’ll let them know,” Yan Hua responded immediately, then removed all the poisonous variety from the mushroom pile.

“Pack up all these mushrooms, just keep a small portion, and distribute the rest to the others.” Su Bai instructed.

The mushrooms gathered today were best eaten fresh, as they would not stay fresh for long, let alone preserve well.

With such a long rainy season and such a vast forest, they would not run out of mushrooms any time soon. They could always gather more when needed.

Su Bai had originally planned to dry some mushrooms, but since it was raining with no Sun, he abandoned the idea.

“Alright,” the girls began repacking the mushrooms into baskets.

After about ten minutes, all the mushrooms had been sorted, leaving only a small portion behind.

“Shaman, how do we prepare them?” Yu Ying could hardly wait to learn how to make new food.

“First, take these mushrooms and wash them thoroughly, make sure they’re cleaned inside and out.” Su Bai instructed.

“Right away,” Yu Ying nodded immediately.

Co Co looked at the mushrooms, sensing some familiarity. She frowned and said, “I feel like I’ve seen these somewhere before.”

While the girls were inspecting the mushrooms, the blonde girl had been watching from the side.

She did not know what to do, so she could not help, and did not understand what they were doing, so she just stood quietly nearby.

“Did you remember something?” Su Bai asked.

“Those things feel very familiar, but something seems off – I just can’t put my finger on it,” Co Co shook her head.

“Then don’t worry about it, just wait for your meal.” Su Bai casually replied.

He was not concerned about the blonde girl’s memories. He mostly left it up to fate if she could remember or not.

These things could not be forced. He would continue performing the Curing Skill on her daily, and how much she remembered was up to her.

“En.” Co Co was somewhat surprised that this Tribe’s Shaman was so approachable.

From what she knew, were Shamans not usually Elders? Were they not typically very rigid? So, she found Su Bai very different. Even though she was not from this Tribe, she believes Su Bai was different from all other Shamans.

His behaviour showed no wariness, and he even treated her to good food and drink.

Along with all the strange things in this Tribe, whether it was the houses or the cement roads, everything made her feel peculiar.

*Step step step…* Yu Ying came running back with a winnowing basket of mushrooms, her soft voice calling out, “Shaman, all the mushrooms have been washed.”

“Put them aside and let the water drain.” Su Bai calmly stated.

He began setting up the wok over the fire pit, then added a piece of animal fat to the wok.

This fat had been prepared by him, used for stir-frying or cooking noodles. Naturally, it was to make things taste more flavourful.

The fat came from wild boar meat, solidifying into yellow, gelatinous blocks. As such, they could just dig out what they needed when using it.

*Sizzle sizzle…* The wild boar fat made sizzling sounds when placed in the heated wok, the solid blocks instantly turning liquid.

*Sizzle sizzle…*

Su Bai took the drained mushrooms from the side and threw some in, instantly making the sizzling sound even louder.

The mushrooms rolled in the wild boar fat, gradually changing colour from their original greyish-brown, taking less than a minute to turn yellow.

The girls all watched intently from the side, none daring to speak for fear of disturbing the Shaman.

Su Bai took out a spatula, rewarded by the System, and began turning the mushrooms, making sure they did not burn or stick to the wok.

*Swoosh swoosh…* The spatula went over the iron wok, making clunking and swooshing sounds as the mushrooms were evenly turned, their colour starting to turn golden.

“Xiao Yu, bring me a plate with some leaves on it.” Su Bai instructed.

He wanted to plate the fried mushrooms, using leaves to absorb some of the oil.

“Okay,” Yu Ying turned to get a plate lined with leaves.

*Swoosh swoosh swoosh…*

Su Bai skilfully scooped all the mushrooms from the wok onto the plate, filling it with the fried mushrooms.

He placed the mushrooms on the table and said, “The fried mushrooms are ready. Here, try them.”

The girls all looked at the plate of mushrooms in surprise, amazed that it was so simple to cook. Yet, the mushrooms smelled so fragrant.

“Shaman, it’s done already?” Yu Ying could hardly believe the process was so quick.

Su Bai thought for a moment, took out a pottery jar containing salt, sprinkled a small amount evenly over the fried mushrooms, then added a bit of cumin powder.

The cumin powder also came from the System. Though there was only a small jar, it was better than nothing.

“Now it’s ready.” Su Bai dusted off his hands.
